Zilean is a really underplayed champion although he is very strong and dominant at mid. People just don't see Zilean as a strong champion. There are multiple viable Solo Mid build and a support build. They are not necessary the best item to get but that's because every game is different, the builds of your enemy varies. Therefore, your build must adapt to your enemy's.A special shout out to LeChuaf900, you suck!
Lore
Zilean. Being obsessed with time, it was only fitting that he dwelled in the city's Clock Tower. As the havoc of the war neared his home, Zilean experimented with powerful temporal magic to divine all possible futures, hoping to discover a peaceful solution. But Zilean's enchantments affected his perception of the passage of time, and he was in a contemplative stasis when Urtistan was set upon by an entire phalanx of dark summoner-knights of unknown affiliation. By the time he realized his error, Urtistan was nothing more than smoldering debris. The summoners who were responsible for its destruction had wisely left the Clock Tower unharmed, both to avoid drawing Zilean's attention and to torment him for his oversight. Zilean barely had time to grieve the momentous loss before he learned that his dangerous research had a cruel side effect: chrono-displasia. This mystical disease granted him immortality, but detached his consciousness from its anchor in the present time. He now mentally drifts through time, from any point he has already lived to the present, unable to impact the events which unfold. The most torturous aspect of this curse is that Zilean sometimes experiences Urtistan as it once was and the rest of the time resides in its lonely ruins. Only the powerful summoning magic employed by members of the League of Legends has been able to treat this condition, and Zilean has joined in hopes of finding a cure, and thereafter a way to save his people.

Abilities
8% experience might seems to be a little but it's actually quite a lot. More exp = faster level up!
This amazing skill scales off 90% of your ability power! That's a very high ap ratio. And together with Rewind, Time Bomb can be spammed rapidly dealing tons of damage. Time Bomb procs spell vamp and the slow from ryali's crystal sceptal. It damages Black Shield and is blocked by spell shields.
This skill instantly reset Time Bomb's cooldown which allows you to deal tons of damage. Sadly, Rewind does not affect summoner spells and item's active ability.
Speeds you up, let's you gank a lot during the laning phrase and quickly getting in/out fights. Helps tanks like Jarvan IV to initiate. Great skill that does no damage. Time Warp pops spell shield and have no effect when your enemy have Black Shield active.
This skill is what makes Zilean a god in LOL. Revives AD Carry, wins the game. Chronoshift will NOT activate if the holder is killed by the nexus obelisk. Chronoshift will always take precedence over other revival abilities, like Guardian Angel and Rebirth.

Chronoshift first as soon as possible as it gives you extra 600hp at level 1 which will allows you to kill your enemy with your auto attack after you die and revive. At level 2 it gives you extra 850hp. 1100hp at level 3.Max
Time Bomb 2nd as it deals the most damage.Max
Rewind next for fast cooldown resulting in more Time Bombs.Max
Time Warp last as it is the least useful skill.
How to leash
Lee Sin, sometimes your Solo Mid is a noob and don't know how to leash. With Zilean it's really easy. After your jungler start the wolves/wraith camp, help auto attack a few times and try to not take the last hit. After that you can simply use Time Bomb on your jungler when he's about to reach the blue/red buff and return to lane. A better way is to stand at the opposite side of the wall auto attack a few times(Attack 1 time for red or it might reset) then return to lane.
Last hitting
Zilean reaches level 5 Time Bomb, place 1 Time Bomb on the caster minions and there's 3 free cs! Place 1 on the melee minions and take the last hits. Then, return to the wraith camp. If after taking the wraiths, your lane is stil pushed up, and your jungler is not taking/looking to take the wolves then take the wolves it helps you a lot.
Jungling
Time Bomb then Rewind then Time Bomb again. Of course use auto attack to finish them off. (P.s. Solo Mods do jungle a bit too, that is why smite is viable for Solo Mid.)
Team Fight
Zilean works well with most initiators like Wukong or Jarvan IV. Use Time Warp on your initiator followed by Time Bomb. Basically in a team fight, you would want to keep your distance away from the enemy team and place Time Bomb on their heads every time it's off cool down. You should always save your Chronoshift to save either yourself(If you are the AP Carry) or your AD Carry. When Chronoshift is active on yourself try to PURPOSELY DIE so your ultimate would not be wasted.
Solo Mid (Build 1)
Because getting cs is important and smite helps you out a lot.(At blue, taking wraiths and siege minion.)
Because when you have 0 hp you die, more hp live longer.Runes
Runes are standard Solo Mid runes. Enough said.
Items
Cooldown reduction is important because less cooldown = more spells, more spells = more damage.
More hp = die slower.
More AP = more damage. More Magic Resist = Survive longer.
More attack speed = more attacks = more damage. More Magic Resist = survive longer.
Dfg = extra skill, extra damage. More ap = more damage.
Gives you a free Highlander. More hp.Masteries

Utility gives you mana and mana regen to spam your
Time Bomb.This builds gives you a ton of cool down reduction, a lot of hp, a lot of ap and attack speed.
Solo Mid (Build 2)
Gants more vision, always good.
Revive + Chronoshift + Guardian Angel = Can't die.Runes
Magic penetration + Ability power = Tons of damage!

Magic Penetration = MORE DAMAGE! :)
Ability Power = more damage. Spell vamp let's you tank better than that fat Volibear or that crying mummy ammumu or that crazy half dragon half women shyvanna !archangel staff Gives more mana and ability power! What more can you want?
AP,attack speed now this item is cheap and good, so why not?
Attack speed at most importantly makes Zilean a lightning wizard as well.

Double splash!( Time Bomb + Auto attack)
More hp, survive longer and more damage. And not to mention an op slow.
More attack speed and ap. The more you atack, the stronger you become.

Support(Build 4)
Surge gives a extra power boost to Zilean and this enables you to deal all the damage for your AD Carry.
Save your life and possibly your AD Carry's life.Runes
The GP10 will let you get money quick since you do not take any last hits. Magic Resist and Armor will let you tank the damage for your AD Carry.
Items
Let's you run faster and deal a ton of a damge.
Since you are the support, wards are very important, this is the only item that gives you a free ward at late game. The attack damage and armor helps you win fights in lane. Wonderful item.
As a support, you get a lot of assists so by getting Sword of the Occult you are boosting your own damage resulting a faster death or earlier victory for your enemy.
More damage with that sheen proc and most importantly some hp and a good reliable slow.
This item is perfect for you, more ap stronger bombs and the unique aura help your Solo Mid to survive battles with that extra bit of spell vamp.
Attack speed + AP = Auto win!Masteries

Standard support masteries with some defense.
THis build aims to help your AD Carry to poke down your enemies while he farms.
Chronoshift should always be used on your AD Carry(Caus you are supporting him) and not yourself! This build is stronger then Sona or Taric at late game. That's caus you carry harder then your carries!
