[12.11] Kayn essentials by a Silver Kayn OTP

By lahsier
Who I am
Hello I am lahsier (lahsierkilledyou ingame)and I'm a silver(almost gold)kayn otp with almost 200,000 mastery points on the champion. I started playing almost a year ago and I've always liked kayn as a champion so I decided to pick him up at the start of 2022. Ive had great success, currently sitting at a 65% winrate on kayn both norms and ranked.
Updates - Buffs and nerfs
[12.11] Red Kayn nerf:
* Q health AD ratio reduced from 5.5% per 100 bonus AD to 5%
This nerf is tiny and doesn't affect kayn that much, he's still very very very good.
Kayn's kit explained.
Base form

Passive - Get orbs off hitting enemies, orb gain gets multiplied as time goes on, meaning you'll get more orbs from hitting someone at minute 15 than hitting someone at minute 5 hitting melee champions = red orbs, hitting ranged champions = blue orbs.

Q - dash and spin your scythe (both parts do damage)

W - skillshot that slows enemies

E - become able to go through walls and gain extra movespeed for a certain amount of time that scales with points into the move, heals you when you get into the wall for the first time, duration gets lowered while in combat or outside terrain

Ultimate - passive: Mark enemies you hit

active: Consume the mark and go inside of the enemy you're ulting, becoming untargettable and dealing damage on recast.

Shadow assassin

Passive: Extra damage for the first 3 seconds in combat

Q - unchanged

w - no casting animation meaning you can use it while using other moves

e - cooldown reduced to 5 at all ranks, extra movespeed incrased, become immune to slows

r - gains extra cast and recast range meaning you can ult from a further range and exit further from normal

Rhaast

Passive: physical vamp against champions

q: max % health damage instead of flat damage

w: now a knockup, still slows for about .5s after the knockup ends

e: unchanged

r: now does max% health damage and heals you for max% health
Where I get my information from
I actively ask questions in the kayn mains discord, watch educational kayn videos and streams, and actively trying to improve on the champion constantly reviewing my vods and looking at my builds, actively trying to improve. I'm making this guide both to help myself and other people that want to get into the champion.kayn mains discord
Build notes
You should always pick up an early (7-8 minute) tear on shadow assassin, so you can turn it into muramana third item, if you have ingenious hunter it will be stacked till third item 100%, if you have treasure hunter and you somehow get super fed early on it probably won't be stacked till third item but it will be close to being fully stacked, which is why I like treasure hunter more than ingenious hunter.

Exodia rhaast is the best red kayn carry build, while goredrinker kayn is better if you're playing with your team since you can peel and drain tank better

I personally like transcendence gathering storm more than resolve secondary on rhaast because of the crazy teamfighting potential you have post level 11, transcendence gives you 20% cooldown refund on non ultimate abilities on takedown which means if you hit a big w q in a 5v5 and get 1 takedown the cooldown will be back much faster than without it while gathering storm allows for insane scaling which is what rhaast is all about

Serpent's fang is a great item to counter shields, if you need antiheal on shadow assassin you get chempunk chainsword and not mortal reminder, if you're playing rhaast you can get either chempunk chainsword or thornsmail, keep in mind though full tank items aren't that great on red kayn because of his passive which is physical vamp which means more damage = more healing and pure tank items don't help that much with it.

Spirit visage is a decent item on rhaast, You can build it vs 5ap, still after maw though as that item is broken as **** right now. I wouldn't recommend building spirit visage without building maw and I dont think you need both items unless 3+ apcarries (Example: karthus ap shyvana kassadin gwen etc etc)

You can build muramana on rhaast, I personally don't really like it and if I'm lacking damage I build seryldas grudge.

Red kayn loves cooldown reduction items.

Kayn's a very flexible and unique champion that can build lots of different items and still be useful.

**DONT BUILD COLLECTOR PLS**
Pros and Cons
Pros
Great scaling
Great carry potential
Great in every elo
Really fun
Not mechanically difficult
Fairly easy to pick up
Good at most things
One of the most enabled champions in the game (His e allows for plays that would never be possible with most champions)

Cons
Bad early game
Bad early objective control
Shadow assassin needs to snowball
Many counters
Useless when behind
Can fall behind easily
Little to no cc for ganks
Only guarranteed move is ult
Ult is bad pre-form
Really long cooldowns early game
What is exodia rhaast
Exodia rhaast is a red kayn build invented by ollip, a high elo euw kayn main who takes ghost and builds eclipse into bruiser items into grudge. You have insane %pen, insane resistences, insane sustain with the shields helping you sustain more, some lethality thrown in, and antiburst items.

Really overpowered build overall, great into tanks, bruisers and squishies, if you get fed with this build you're unstoppable.

This build is as selfish as red kayn can get, becoming a solocarry machine, taking the game onto your own hands. If you're trying to play with your team, you should build goredrinker to peel and drain tank instead.
Educational Kayn streamers you can watch
I really like watching KeramonX, he's really entertaining, interactive and educational, he answers every question and reads every message in chat

his twitch

You can also watch ollip, his playstyle is completely unique and he's the inventor of the exodia rhaast build, in my opinion he's not as interactive as Keramon but if you're looking for gameplay you should check him out

his twitch

And of course, Karasmai, he's a really good player, multi season challenger his streams are pretty entertaining and educational. However I dont recommend watching his videos if you're trying to learn how to build kayn because he mostly uploads clickbait build videos for clicks and most aren't even close to optimal

Cheesing (Abusing vision and stealing enemies camps)

**VS FULL CLEAR CHAMPIONS THAT START BLUE BUFF ** Your Wolves > Enemy raptors > Enemy Krugs > wait for enemy to do his red buff > steal it with smite > leave or kill them

**VS FULL CLEAR CHAMPIONS THAT START RED BUFF ** Your raptors > Enemy gromp > enemy blue > gank or go back to your jungle
Ganking
Ganking with kayn is really unique because of his e shadow step which allows you to go through walls, this means you can gank through terrain and warding to prevent your ganks is nearly impossible

when you get to the person youre ganking you should use your q reaping slash towards the enemies tower so you can autoattack right after, if the enemy gets our of range you should finish him off with your w, blade's reach.

if you have your ultimate umbral tresspass you can stick on the enemy while stalling for cooldowns and being able to dodge abilities which makes your job a whole lot easier.

If you have blue smite ganking with kayn becomes even easier because you get movement speed and the enemy loses movement speed, while also marking the enemy with umbral tresspass' passive which means you can ult them

overall kayn's ganks are great as long as teamate you're ganking has some type of cc
Choosing forms
You pick your form before the game starts in champ select, then pick your runes depending on which form you want to go. Right now exodia rhaast build is good into any comp, even squishies, theres people onetricking the build and going on crazy winstreaks.

If you can oneshot a champion, think of them as a blue kayn champion, if you can't, think of them as a red kayn champion. Sometimes there's champions that you can beat with both forms.

I also like to pick form depending on my team's comp. If my team can eliminate the enemies back line but lacks peel, I go red kayn. If my top and mid pick something tanky but have no way of eliminating the enemy backline, I pick blue kayn.
Playstyle
Kayn is a jack of all trades jungler, he's good at almost everything, however farming and mobility are where he really shines.

There's multiple playstyles to kayn and everyone has a unique one, some people powerfarm, some people perma invade, some people spam gank, its all up to you.

As I said earlier, kayn's one of the most enabled champions in the game, meaning you can do lots of things other champions can't.
General tips
If you're new to kayn, I recommend practicing on smurfs or norms, it will really help you figure out his limits, which is what most people have trouble with. Kayn really is really high skill cap as in a good kayn player will take over the game instantly. Knowing kayn's limits is the most important thing about him.

Using e outside of terrain and flashing into terrain will heal you instantly

You can use r to go through walls

You can use q's dash to go through small walls

You should use your ultimate to wait for your cooldowns to come back

Your ultimate gets extra range when playing shadow assassin

You can use prowlers claw while w is casting for prowlers to apply the damage buff to your w and then q right after. If you r and stall for your cooldowns then your extra damage shadow assassin passive will refresh because of your ult while your cooldowns will most likely be up again and you'll be able to do loads of damage

You shouldn't always contest objectives, instead, if you know the enemy jungler is on the objective and you know you can't contest because maybe the enemy jungler is fed or the enemy jungler is an early game jungler then you should give it to them and gank or farm their camps instead, basically trading the dragon for something else. You can also do the other objective that's up, meaning that if the enemy jungler is on dragon you can do herald and get herald essentially trading 1 for 1

If you q into a wall the animation becomes faster

You can autoattack cancel with your q by q-ing right after you auto

I'm not telling you to not buy wards, but you don't really need them, especially when playing shadow assassin kayn because of his low cooldown e which provides great vision
(Personal) Gameplan
- Early game - I like to full clear and only go for really free ganks, while taking as many skirmishes as I can because kayn's great at them. Farming your way to an advantage is one of the best things you can do with kayn, however be careful to not overdo it, you should still apply pressure to the map and not just farming. Make sure you track the enemy jungler's location so you can avoid/ fight them depending on the matchup.

- Mid game - after you've gotten your form you should be really strong unless you're extremely behind. if you have even a slight advantage you can take over the game immediately. blue kayn's mobility and speed allows you to farm everything on the map while having insanely fast rotations and being able to get picks off sidelane, while red kayn's teamfighting, skirmishes and duels are some of the best in the game because of his passive which grants him physical vamp against champions. If you're playing blue kayn you should be trying to turn your advantage into a win, while if you're playing red kayn you can accelerate your advantage without worrying about falling off because rhaast scales really well while shadow assassin does not. I also like hovering splitpushing teamates incase an enemy pops up that I can kill, really easy to get picks like that

- late game - if you're playing blue kayn late game ( Past 30 minutes) you should have enough damage to be able to flash into 5 enemies do wq ult and half hp all of them which should be enough to seal the game, however this scenario is as ideal as it gets, 1 missplay as blue kayn in late game and you will die allowing the enemies to get a huge advantage or even end the game. Lategame rhaast is great. His physical vamp passive scales with levels while his ad ratios are insane, he's a teamfighting god and with exodia rhaast build you can really take over the game, however late game squishies have enough damage to delete you out of the game even with 3k+ hp and lots of resistances, so be careful, as long as you have someone to heal off with your passive, you'll be fine. Don't forget to peel for your carries!
