Renekton is one HELL of a lane bully especially once he hits Level 3. He relies mostly on going in to hit you with his E, stunning with W, Q then E out unless you're insanely low already. He's definitely a threat to your playstyle since he needs to be in your face anyways with an armor shredding empowered E and the fact his Q heals for a crap ton if he Qs you and minions around him. Grievous is your best friend here, but still be careful as his ult gives him more AD and does AOE damage. Most Renektons look to snowball so try to avoid letting that happen. Unless he's a god tier renekton if he can't snowball he wont provide much later in the game like you can.
Malphite
Both AP and Tank Malphite are pretty scary threats to you honestly. Most Malphites will just take corrupting potion, Q poke you to death and repeat till you're low enough to just walk up to and smack with his abilities. AP Malphite once he has lost chapter can basically one shot you if you can't avoid his ult. Tank Malphite is a little better to handle but still annoying in damage. You'll probably need help from your jungler a bit unless the Malph is insanely bad. Later in the game Tank is more manageable but AP Malph is a one shot machine who normally has a teammate nearby to pick up the damage he couldn't kill your team with.
Cassiopeia
Cassiopeia is more of a midlaner, but at times I've caught her top. She is a hellish pain to go up against once she hits level 2. Once she hits 2, she will try to land her poison on you and just chase you down spamming E which will gain damage as conqueror is most Cass mains go-to rune. Her W will stop your dashing and flashes so be mindful when chasing or running from her to hopefully bait it out. If you can, W or look away from her ult so you don't get turned to stone and lose the fight.
Just don't let her snowball among is the biggest thing, and you can handle her late if she couldn't get ahead.
Vayne
Vayne like most toplane champs who are ranged challenge you. With a kit that allows her to keep you at a range she prefers and auto range that towers cant target her in time with she's a hellish pain to go against. Get your Jungler to help if she's super aggressive like she should be, camp her to HELL as toplane ranged champs deserve to be. Play safe mostly though, if she can't get kills off of you, most Vaynes tend to get frustrated and will spam ping their jungler to dive you to get a kill or wander to another lane or your jungle looking to get a kill to get ahead. Regardless though that doesn't slow down her scaling too much since like Yi, if she has a ton of CS she can still scale very easily.
Volibear
Volibear and Ornn are both tanks with high early damage, however Volibear is much worse. His chain lightning is good for poke, his Q+E+W combo hurts like hell if all land and overall he's just a pain to fight especially when his W heals him. Be careful poking him as he may take advantage and try to all-in you level 3 and after. If you're low or a volibear gets impatient once he hits 6+, he will either ult dive you deactivating tower or wait for his jungler to dive you. If he builds tanky late game you have a good chance of winning then, however his damage doesn't fully fall off so be mindful of that.
Kalista
Hate to say it but this pick is a heavy good counter against any champ that needs to get close. She has good kiting overall and fighting her too long is more favorable for her since she can get in about 10+ spears with lethal tempo before executing you with her E due to how heavy the damage is. I don't see much being done against her if at all unless you got a jungle duo who wants to make her rage quit.
Kayle
Bully. Her. Before. Level 6. If. Possible. Kayles weakest state is pre-6 due to having no power to defend herself much if at all without help from a jungler. Just do your best to feed off her if you can before she hits six because once she does she's beating you most of the game since she scales much better than you do. If she managed to snowball or is even in items, she'll still most likely win due to her ult stopping any execute possibility.
Pantheon
Similar to Renekton, a lane bully who will look for short but heavy trades except here you'll lose trying to trade with him after his stun wears off. Most Pantheons build PTA or Conq to get the most damage out of their engage. It's not easy trading back with a pantheon since his shield blocks all incoming damage from the front and his Q not only has a short CD, but does more damage based off of your missing health. Your best bet simply put is to just play safe under tower and hope he gets impatient for a dive. You can chase if he takes at least 2 tower shots since he'll try to flash if you ult him since his W and E have long CDs. For the most part though don't trade with him and play closer to tower.
Quinn
Quinn is a hard, and I mean HARD matchup to win against. You can't really go in to engage her because her E puts her right back into kite range. Most of the time if you E into melee range, she will E away and kite poke you down. Most you can do is play safe under tower and try to have your jungle gank your lane when possible otherwise she's just gonna dominate all lane phase. Just be cautious of her Q too, that blind can really be annoying to go against.
Urgot
Not a ton you can do against him once he hits Level 3. He has more burst than you and it's insane how powerful he is in the early game even challenging champs who are suppose to beat him. Poke him if he gets too close but keep your E on reserve and try to dodge his E with yours, if you do that you have a better winning shot in the fight as long as he didn't land his Q to lock onto you first and you're not in an open area. Wait for his W to go down so his damage options are out then you can punish him. Just be mindful Level 6+ his ult executes so don't expect to win if you're both low and he lands the ult. Seriously avoid letting him snowball, and definitely be cautious even later in the game as his burst is still nuts. He does get beefy though so that's an advantage for you.
Singed
Singed is a HEAVY good choice against Gwen being that he can just choose when to fight due to his W slowing and stopping you in place, plus the rule of "Don't chase Singed" is heavily still enforced and well known. Overall there isn't much you can do if he decides to Proxxy since he can outspeed you. I'd recommend him as a pocket ban if you're certain the enemy is a singed player. After 12.15 updates he's become even more of a pain scaling way better in the early game with his ult stat increase.
Teemo
Teemo has received some questionable buffs as of lately, but that's not the main point. His Q blind even with tenacity counters you pretty well since you need E to do a good chunk of your damage and he'll just do his best to kite you out. Take Sweeper to avoid his shrooms and only take trades if he pushes in too far. If he screws up and uses blind randomly or while your W is going up, go in on him with ult. It'll either force him to flash or he'll die since he can't fight you in a close fight.
Warwick
I'll be honest, even with grievous, it's a hard to win matchup. Top Warwicks mostly will end up going Lethal Tempo and with how much lifesteal he has so early, you aren't winning even the level 1 matchup that Gwen does so good in. He'll wanna trade once he hits 2 and gets fear so you'll have to try to play close to tower. If you see him going in, try to dash under tower, he'll take the aggro and have to flash or walk out of it. Even then unless you have ignite up and he's almost fully dead without tempo stacked, I wouldn't recommend fighting. Just make sure you don't feed him, stay near tower, and only engage if he makes heavy mistakes and/or your jungler has so much CC he can't do anything
Wukong
A good wukong knows no lane equal in being a trickster. His E increases attack speed, his Q extends with levels and shreds armor and his W lets him dash away. Be mindful that he can easily beat you in most early stages and then at level 6 it depends who can play the game smarter. Just know if he's too low, he's gonna just try to W away so you can't get a kill.
Akshan
He is annoying, but not Vayne or Kayle level annoying. He will try to play aggressive so this might be a camp under tower scenario. If he Es in, either body block it or W if he won't be in your W range. If you body block him he has to either flash, run or fight. Obviously W his ult if you don't have minions or tower for cover and be cautious of his Q poke as it extends the more minions he hits.
Gangplank
Ganplank while getting an early game buff, still is a good lane bully against you since he will usually just Q poke you down and use corrupting to keep his health topped off, sometimes even flash-autoing you with his passive active to finish you if you're low. Just try your best to avoid and/or remove his barrels when possible and your lane will get a bit easier since his damage relies on his barrels.
Kennen
Kennen is one of the main reasons you need to run Tenacity. His Q and auto poke are annoying, his W is as well and his E just lets him run away if he feels you're getting too close to him. Overall this isn't an impossible matchup as some Kennens screw up but he doesn't make it easy.
Darius
Do not ever, and I mean NEVER get into prologned fights with Darius at early levels . Even level 1, he still has a decent change to beat you simply due to his passive. Try to poke him down and be careful of his pull as that's your signal he's going for an all in. Try to at least stay in his inner Q circle so he can't heal or get another bleed stack from his passive and be god careful of his ult as it will just execute you at half health. Mid-Late game if you can get some help and avoid his initial pull+Q bleed you have a good winning shot.
Garen
Garens kit is a decent counter to yours however that doesn't mean he's the greatest threat to you in the toplane. His Q silence is the only scary thing but if you built up tenacity it wont last long. Early game, smart garens will play aggro looking for short trades then backing up to heal with their passive. If you manage to keep him close after his E spin is over, chase him down for a bit more hits since his CDs are pretty hefty in the early game. Try to also poke him with your E+Q if he's attempting to heal off his passive at low health so he can't just rush back into the lane without seeming like he took any damage. Finally, just be cautious of his Ult since it does missing health true damage. If you're half health and he hasn't ulted in lane, chances are he's gonna get close and/or flash+Q you for the ult finish.
Yasuo
This is a very annoying matchup but not at all impossible. Get grievous early or you'll regret it. Avoid his tornadoes when possible and remember he will dash around everywhere if he thinks you'll kill him or he wants to make himself hard to hit. Try to get his passive shield down before a fight too as that shield can make a difference at the fight start. Be mindful that wind wall also stops your ult.
Riven
Early Riven will be mostly in her favor, as a smart riven level 2-3 can all in you and kill you if you're not careful enough. If you can at least avoid her Q knockup and/or her W stun you have a better chance to win the fight. Be mindful her autos gain more damage after every ability use, and her ult executes off missing health. If you think she's gonna try to ult snipe you, keep your W ready if you didn't use it for the resistances. Once it gets to mid game it depends whos fed and who can react to who faster.
Lillia
This is your queen of hit and run pokes. She will walk up, Q you, maybe auto you then walk away since you can't keep up with her due to her slowing you and her burn passive. If she comes in to Q you, Q her back as punishment especially if you have 4 stacks. Zhonyas stasis and her ult have had weird reactions together so I never take it against her. She can't beat you later in the game.
Gnar
Gnars mini form for you is more dangerous than his mega form. He will normally try to poke you down more once he hits level 2 due to his W passive which does more damage every 3rd hit. When he turns mega, be mindful of his boulders massive damage and you can all in him if he misses his W. Level 6+ in his mega form do not go near walls as he will use his full stun combo to melt you in seconds. He's gotten a 12.14 nerf to his health and regen, but that doesn't change how dangerous he is.
Jax
Jax can be hellish especially with his burst potential and his 12.6 W damage increase. If you see him E early, W yourself if he hasn't already hopped onto you so he has to jump a minion or put down a ward to get in range. His E stops your E autos but not your Q or ult. Just be mindful of his damage and do your best not to get caught in his E stun.
Olaf
Olafs been seeing alot more toplane action since his changes. [I'll admit even I used him topside before his rework]. As far as I can tell he is one hellish lane opponent. His update has him being less effective health wise in the lane, and his Q costs more to use making him have to use more sparingly, however be cautious fighting him still as his passive has increased to 60% AS when fighting and low health, so always remember to get grievous, and be prepared for a real fight.
Aatrox
Aatrox is a menace, and if you're not able to react to him properly or avoid his Q knockup spots he can be an extreme pain. Your best bet is to dodge his first Q especially if he dashes towards you, by getting in his face so he cant get a chance for his second Q to hit, but his third Q still can so be on guard to be at an odd spot so he can't hit it. Take ignite and get grievous early. His 12.14 Adjustments make him a bit more beefy and lower his healing, but since it's more focused towards late game healing, laning power is still about the same against him so be cautious. If he Ws you, just walk or E to the side so he cant pull you back in since the width is so bad.
Kled
Kled has gotten a bit of an update allowing his Q to do more AD scaling initial damage with the second cast doing more as well and a lower W CD. This just means be more careful in the lane phase as his W wont be down as long anymore. For the most part, just try to dodge his Q either by E or W, poke him down, but most importantly: WATCH. FOR. SKAARLS. BAR. If he gets skaarl back at the last second right as you're about to win, he'll win the fight as it restores most of his health. Just make sure if he's gonna get him back you back up.
Akali
Skill matchup for sure. She'll try to poke you with her Q and passive early before attempting any kind of all-in pre-6. Your Q is stronger so poke her when you can and chase her with your E. Half the time she will go back in when you walk away. Once she hits 6 she will get more confident in her all-ins. Do your best to dodge her E and especially her ults second part as that's the main decision maker on if she's gonna continue to fight or not. Make note that she's gonna have a heavy increase in her Ws energy restoration due to buffs so her W will be a better tool than usual.
Camille
Get grievous against her early, even if you feel like it's not necessary. Her W heals and her Qs true damage is nuts especially the healing it gets once she has sunder and ravenous. Overall this is just skill based as well. Dodge her E with your own and try to poke her down. Most of the time unless her junglers nearby or you're already low she will run away and slow you with her W since she missed her stun. Level 6 is dangerous for her as prolonged up close fights are what you thrive for. Even at full build you're still dangerous to her, so this will be depending on who has better skill at landing abilities.
Fiora
Fiora is a pain, even after her true damage nerfs on her passive. This is a skill matchup with the early game being hers. Do your best to keep your vitals out of her range. You can walk away to reset them to a different angle, but only if you don't want her to have easy vital shots. Just do your best to keep vitals hard to hit, Q poke her if you can, and be mindful of her ult, nearly everything she has procs it.
Illaoi
After consideration, Illaoi is being demoted to even threat. Her main damage poke will come from landing her E and spamming her Q for poke if she missed her E originally and both with your E are easy to dodge, plus you just need to hide behind minion wave and her E can't touch you so she'll have to reposition to hit you. Just be warned: Once she hits 6+, jungle ganks are going to be more risky since her ult hits harder the more people her ult hits. If you're winning a fight and she E's you when she's 6+, GTFO OF THERE. She's going to ult your spirit and hit you at the same time for massive healing and damage. Not to mention her main first item hullbreaker has gotten a nerf to be more mid-late game viable instead of early game so she won't build it first unless she's still holding onto the glory days or doesn't know about the nerf.
Gwen
Obviously all skill based. At level 1 whoever lands the first E auto wins. Do your best to poke her and avoid her poking as well. At level 6 try to W her ult if you know she's not in range to hit you with it. Whoever is smarter, can hit more true damage Qs and builds faster wins.
Irelia
All about reaction timing and is a skill based matchup. You'll have to play safer early as her damage, even with fully stacked conq, can't beat her passive stacks. Plus you'll need grievous for her Q healing or you'll regret fighting her. With her healing increase scaling higher off her AD in 12.11, the grievous is definitely more needed however overall nothing changes skill wise, just depends who's better.
Mordekaiser
Mordekaisers Q is definitely his biggest damage ability. Avoid letting it land or if you can't at least stand in a minion wave so he doesn't get extra damage on you. Dodge his E's with your W or your E, and don't let him isolate you in the open. Even when he ults you you still have a chance to win if you can avoid his Q pokes in his realm. If you don't feel safe or confident, take QSS to leave his realm early or Zhonyas to stall out and give your team time to rotate to you. Just be mindful his 12.8 buff lets him move faster in later levels when his passive stacks are built up so at some point he's gonna be faster than you.
Nasus
Nasus is one of those champs that for some reason, despite being a tank, can still challenge you. Pre-6 he isn't much of a threat, but once he hits 6, rather he has good farm or not, unless you're ahead for some reason he'll beat you even if you have grievous. Just do your best to do what you can pre-6 and wait till later in the game to engage him. By then you should be able to handle him but level 6+ isn't very favorable without being ahead or taking caution.
Poppy
Poppy can be a bit tricky at times but you still have better shots at winning the fights. Her passive will let her poke you but it won't do enough to really be a threat. Avoid being near walls so she can't E stun you and be mindful that her ults stun time has increased by a bit so she's got even more CC potential. Don't dash at her if her W is up as it'll just knock you up and stop you from chasing, even then she's still faster with her w. As long as she isn't fed or building full damage and is ahead of you you'll win nearly every fight later in the game
Rengar
This is more of a smarter matchup above all else. Stay away from his brush as he'll just constantly use it to jump on you for poke. Once you hit 3 you can try to poke him if he pounces you, just be mindful he will try to run back to brush to get you, if that is the case W just outside of brush range and ward it so you can see where he's hiding. I only recommend chasing him into his brush if he's low or you know you can burst him at half health.
Sett
Level 1 can go either way depending on what he levels first and if he catches you out first. If he levels his E first, you can win the Level 1 fight, but if he levels Q first it's going to be his win. You're both 1v1 insane champs so it'll depend on who's smarter. Keep an eye on his grit level and if you feel he's gonna use his W either E behind him or W it if he's out of range. If either isn't an option, E to the outer range so he can't get off true damage. Once his grit is down in most of the games stages and you didn't take the true damage you'll win.
Tahm Kench
Tahm is still a tank, an annoying one at times honestly. He's only even because his tank power is backed up by insane damage all game if you aren't careful. With 12.11, his passive damage increased with an ult shield increase and a Q healing buff, making him have more lane sustain if he lands hits on you. Just be cautious, avoid his Qs and remember if he feels he will lose a fight he will W away and since you have no stuns, you cant stop it.
Trundle
Trundle is a pain, however even if he takes lethal tempo you can beat him in the early 1v1. Just be mindful that his kit is meant to raise his stat power while also lowering yours. Late game can be very heavily different depending on the build he takes but again, he's a tank, so you both will do insane damage to each other.
Yone
Firstly, get grievous. You'll regret it if you don't. Past that, in the early stages he will be super aggressive once he hits 3 so this is a stay near/under tower scenario. Once you hit 6 and hopefully took grievous, you can try to all in him. Just be mindful if he uses his E he might go in for a full engage.
Fun fact I also found out: If he ults you but you know he's outside your W's range, use it. it's considered a teleport and his ult is longer than your W so he will glide right past you and behind you making him go back to his body or try to fight you in a weird spot.
Tryndamere
Tryndameres aren't too heavy of a threat later in the game to you, but early lane phase it can be skill based as much as I hate to admit it. The only reason for this is because of his passive giving him free crits even without crit items. You can poke him down to lower him so he's forced to heal and lose his crits but don't engage him lane phase once he hits 6 without help from someone with CC. Most of the time he'll end up winning because of his ult. If he does ult to beat you, especially under tower, halfway through it ignite him so that when he comes out he dies if he backed up. Even with healing the grievous should stop most of it and execute him once his ult is worn out.
Bel'Veth
With her new update allowing large minions to give her passive stacks, people are gonna assume she's lane viable. Granted, she is somewhat but not till level 3. You can normally beat her if you're careful. Try to click her at least once so your autos keep hitting her and you're not struggling to hit her while she dashes, try to dodge her W for a 5th dash reset, and E away from her when she uses her E to avoid her lifesteal/resistance, preferably behind her if she's low enough to kill so she has to run or flash away. Wait out her true form if you're not confident you can kill her but for the most part your kit isn't half bad to take her on.
Cho'Gath
Cho'Gath has some good early damage, even capable of challenging Gwen level 1. His E hurts alot but it's his Q that he will rely on the most. Just poke him if he goes in for a minion kill, W or dash out of his Qs and be mindful of his E's damage. His silence doesn't last long so it isn't too scary. Once he hits 6, be heavily careful of his ult execute. If he builds demonic embrace especially be careful mid game as he can execute you at half health until you get your cosmic drive.
Dr. Mundo
Mundos health regen on both his ult and passive got nerfed, making it less reliable in the laning phase to use as a get out of jail card, however his damage is still a scary factor, so keep that in mind when fighting him. I'd poke him down and either wait till he's under half or until you're 6 for a full engage. This is a matchup you wanna take ignite for because if you ignite him during his ult, he has to run to wait for it to wear off. Dodge his Qs cause they hurt alot after some time and ignite him in his ult and you'll win most fights against him in every stage unless he got heavily fed off you.
Gragas
Gragas top is becoming slightly more picked, not alot though. He'll do his best to Q poke you down. In level 1 trades you win easy. As long as you can avoid his Q pokes and W his ult if he isn't inside it, you should win most matchups throughout the game. Just don't underestimate the mans combo damage. Between both of you getting your first items, if he does and knows how to combo, he'll normally win if he's smart and can land abilities
Maokai
I rarely if ever see Maokai top but he's not too big of a threat rather he's tank or AP Maokai. Be careful level 1-3 as he actually does a crap ton of damage for no reason. Avoid his empowered sapplings in the brush, W his ult and be careful of his all-ins when his junglers around in laning phase. For the most part though as long as his brush sapplings don't keep attaching to you for poke, you win.
Ornn
Ornn has some scary early damage with his brittle effect coming into play in fights. He will probably engage you with W when you go in for minions or try to poke you with Q. Poke him when possible as you do more damage once you hit 6. Avoid being near walls, make sure not to get knocked up by his Q+E combo and W his ult if you can since it's too huge to dash away from. Mid-Late game he won't be able to kill you unless you're already low.
Yorick
Even with his 12.12 buffs, he's still not too heavy of a threat to fight at most stages of the game as long as you can dodge him. His minions got speed buffs and health buffs so be careful fighting them, even if they are weak, but his Maidens range of chase is lower. Overall, not much changes. Dodge his E with yours if you have to, kill his W for Q stacks or E over it and you'll win most fights if his maiden doesn't auto-aggro you. His hullbreaker won't do much till late game but even then, he's still not a big match for you.
Shen
His W shield is the only real effective thing against you since it stops your E autos but not your Q so if he goes into you while you have full Q it's not hard to give back a decent trade after his auto shield is down. Just know you can't do much if he ults to his teammates unless he's low enough to kill.
Sion
Sions changes and hullbreakers nerf have made inting Sion way less viable than ever. Avoid his Q knockup stun, don't let him Ult+Q combo you and you'll win at every stage of the game against him. Since he can't use his passive to kill structures as fast anymore, he'll probably risk running away more than ever instead of staying near structures after he dies. The only reason you need to be worried about him is if the enemy Jungler hard camps you so that he can get ahead and start splitpushing, in this case he's a nightmare.

She'll beat you in early 1v1s without a doubt. Her kits overloaded to keep her alive and since you have no CC to push her out of her E form for lifesteal, unless you E out of it you don't do much to her. Late game is about the same but worse since she will be attacking faster than you. Click her once when she dashes around you so even when she dashes your autos lock onto her, then you can either save your E to dodge her W knockup, or to get out of her E circle. You have a better shot at winning if she's out of her true form but that's not a guarantee, it just means she's weaker than she can normally be.
Garen
Toplane or Jungle this man still heavily can counter you without much counterplay from you. He can chase you with his Q, his E shreds, and his ult does missing health true damage. Early game if you have help he might be beatable. Mid-Late game is a no go since by then he should have greaves and 2 items which is usually Stride and Mortal which will help him melt you. If you know he's gonna be in your game, best to find another jungler.
Jax
Jax is a good counter pick to Gwen though not picked jungle too often anymore. Almost every fight except maybe in the late game will be his. His E will easily counter you since you need autos to get your Q stacks and he blocks them. If you can at least dodge his initial E engage you might have a slim chance. W yourself as well if he activates it early so he cant jump to you unless he wards into your W or there are minions nearby.
Kindred
Good matchup against you. Her Q lets her get away and decide fights and her E lets her do extra damage if she lands all the marks. If you can manage to get your camps before she does or gank her for entering your camp and catch her off guard you should do better later in the game. Not much you can do about her ult, just get your Q stacks up so when it heals her your Q already melts her back down.
Lillia
In a full on fight she wins due to her heavy burst power plus her sleep doing bonus damage if it lands on you. She can easily invade and unless your laners come to CC chain her she can get out pretty easily. Overall she's an annoying champ to go against at every stage, and her clear is now a bit easier due to buffs so expect her to visit your jungle after she clears hers out.
Pantheon
Pantheon is starting to see more action in the jungle and like in lane, he's still dangerous to fight. When he hits level 3 he can normally full combo you and nearly kill you in one go before you can get a proper auto off. It's best to not take him on without help from your laner otherwise you're gonna notice fast why he's a good counter to Gwen. He has decent clear now due to his Q doing 105% damage to monsters so just make sure to be ready for him to clear a wave and come right back.
Volibear
Most Volibears can beat you at every stage of the game, excluding maybe late game tank volibears. For the most part, I'd just choose someone else if a volibear is on the enemy team.
Warwick
No shot at any stage of the game, even if you have grievous. His lifesteal early makes it hard to 1v1 him without help from someone with good CC to fight him. For the most part just avoid him at all times until you get a team to help you.
Zac
He. Is. Insanely. Annoying. The meta for Zacs has mostly been full AP health tank or a hybrid Tank/AP build that makes them do heavy damage while also tanking your whole team. Honestly, if you're against a Zac, just try to dodge his E engage and mow him down quickly if you don't get melted right away.
Darius
Not a pick I see TOO often but dangerous when he is picked and runs ghost/smite almost every time. Early game, you obviously won't beat him because his passive damage is way too strong. Mid-Late game is iffy depending if either of you are ahead of each other and who plays smarter. If he Qs, try to stay in the inner ring to deny him healing and a bleed stack. He'll engage with a pull so just know it's easier to fight him with help.
Evelynn
Most Evelynns won't engage you towards the early game, mid game is iffy but late game is dangerous for you both. Early game just don't bother chasing her if she fully charms you with W or she'll damage you alot and possibly kill you, she does more damage early than people think. Mid/Late game just watch out around you. Her power is insane even if you have health. If she charms you, W yourself so she has to get in your bubble to do anything. Don't bother chasing if she ults away cause by then her passive will heal her back. Her W now shreds more in 12.13 and her ult puts her in invisibility quicker so be careful in a chase since that means she can heal faster.
Qiyana
Early game she shouldn't be able to beat you if she uses her whole combo. Just avoid being near walls level 6+ so her ult doesn't damage you. Late game her burst has proven to be a HELLISH force against you and even certain tanks surprisingly. If you can manage to keep her behind and your team doesn't feed her you have a good shot at winning against her later.
Taliyah
Her E field makes dashing to her hard as it'll stun you and her Q poke is dangerous as it can burst pretty hard most stages of the game. Her Q is spammable too especially after her update so your W can save you a bit of time but she'll most likely just do everything in her kit to keep you away till your Ws down.
Trundle
Dangerous champ to go against regardless. Most build lethal tempo and will whack you in the face constantly. His kit is meant to hinder you while boosting him. Late game, heavily iffy on what he built but due to his ult he'll win most engages against you.
Zed
This only applies to good Zeds who know how to use him properly, if he's not good he's a minor threat. Zeds are insanely dangerous as a good one can just ult you, take out most of your health and have his ult execute you before you can trade back. Chasing him is pointless due to his shadow. Your best bet if you see him is to W so he has to be in your face to ult then try to dodge his 2-3 shadows Q so you don't get melted instantly.
Ekko
Skill based, he has good burst against you due to his 3 hit passive but once that's down it's more dependent on who's better at their skills. If he's low Level 6+, he'll ult if he knows he'll lose. You'll have to E away and W if he's gonna be outside the W ring or flash away or you'll be knocked out of the fight instantly. This is one of the examples Rylais works too since he'll run if he's too beat.
Graves
As much as I hate admitting this, this is skill based Early/Mid game. I'd avoid early game 1v1s though without help unless he's low because most good graves will auto you pretty easily 3 times in a row. MId-Late game can always depend on skill and who's higher in feed. If you're even if you can avoid his ult and melt him down fast enough with your Q and ult you normally win.
Kayn
Both Kayns are skill based but Red goes to major. Early game you should be able to beat Kayn before he evolves as long as you're careful and aren't already low. If he goes blue just dodge his W engage that procs his passive extra damage and you should do good. Red Kayn, dodge his W with your E or W, if he Qs in try to dodge with your E then engage him. His lifesteal is nuts so you NEED to get grievous no matter what or he'll outheal everyone. 12.14 has given Rhaast a bit of healing power nerf but grievous is still a must have against the man.
Kha'Zix
Another example of skill based matchup. Don't 1v1 him early game without help since he gets more damage on isolated targets and your 1v1 isn't incredible at the start. Mid game just depends who's more fed, Late game is yours if it reaches that far since your 1v1 power is stronger than his burst and you should have enough health to stay alive. Just dodge his E with yours and you should be ok.
Lee Sin
Depends on how good the Lee Sins combos are. If he's not a combo god you should be ok. Early game is skill based but should be yours if you play smart enough around his abilities and dodge his Q engage. Late game is still more skill based but you should win if he doesn't have help. Just make sure you know his abilities are a bit more spammable now that they all cost less energy than before
Master Yi
You should beat him in early 1v1s since that's when he's weakest. You're both late game scaling champs, but he barely beats you. If you can manage to wait till he Qs before you throw an ult or Q you should be ok. Just wait out certain abilities and you'll do fine. If you get to late game however and he's full build most likely he beats you in every 1v1.
Olaf
Grievous. Easily. Doesn't matter who else is on their team if he's on it take grievous. He'll win early 1v1s. Mid-Late game is skilled-ish. If he ults, try to kite him out until it ends so he doesn't have extra damage anymore. Besides that if you can manage to burst him down faster than he can auto you should win. Just watch out for his W shield.
Poppy
A tank that can challenge you but most Poppy Junglers are damage based so she'll be a bit harder hitting. If you see her, avoid being near walls so she can't stun you with her E. Late game even if she's fully built she shouldn't be able to beat you unless she fully stuns you to oblivion with help since you shred tanks. Don't E towards her if her W is active as it's a dash, so you'll get knocked up.
Shaco
Every Shaco is iffy. AP Shaco shouldn't cause you a ton of issue if you take oracle, but AD is different. If AD Shaco can get behind you full build and auto you it's over. I've played against him as a full build Ornn and he would do 2k health damage in his 3 backstab autos, so just make sure not to engage him if he's ahead.
Vi
Don't fight her early, she'll win. In the later games it just depends on what kind of Vi she is. Vi can take alot of roles in teams so it's hard saying exactly what scenario you're against. I can't give you an accurate informative guess on this since I see so many different Vi players.
Viego
Dodge his stun if it's charged up and you'll be ok. You do more damage early than him and in most stages of the game if I'm honest. If you're behind he'll beat you but mostly it's your game.
Elise
More depends on who can react faster. Most Elise players build AP and their Q does heavy burst. Use your E to dodge her human web stun, W either her stun or her spiderling if you have to. If you can dodge her initial CC/Engage abilities she's an easier target. Just don't fight her if she's ahead. Her Q damage has gone up ONLY in human form and she'll be a bit more beefy, but because of how you're built that's a bit of an advantage for you.
Amumu
He's a CC Tank, both things you should be fine against since you melt tanks and if you took Unflinching as a rune. In most 1v1s you should win at most stages unless you're already low. Just be careful if he has a team around as this could still prove trouble if he has help, other than that he can't beat you alone.
Fiddlesticks
If you took Tenacity Runes and Merc Treads you should be fine honestly against his fear. He should be easy to 1v1 most of the game since he can't spam fear on you. Just wait for his ult to wear off before you engage if he ults in and he can't really beat you in any stage except maybe mid unless he's super fed or has help. Just know his Q fear duration has gone up in 12.13 and his ult damage has gone up alot as well, so don't take the fight in his ult and make sure you have tenacity for him.
Hecarim
It just depends on who gets fed. Early game once he hits 6 though he shouldn't win if you're both 6 since once he uses all his abilities he's a sitting duck. Later in the game he shouldn't be able to challenge you without help since your scaling power is better than his and since you melt tanks, which most Hecarims build, you shouldn't have heavy issues, especially if you took resolve as secondary.
Jarvan IV
Jarvan is only dangerous in the early game since most Jarvans only build to be tanky and rely on getting ahead due to his insane damage early. If you can avoid fighting him in a 1v1 most of the early game unless you have help he should have a decent struggle keeping up. Late game is yours. If he ults you, you have two choices in this matter: First, you can just E out of the ring, or two, you can W and take the fight as your W and his ult zone are about the same size so nobody can outside interfere with range unless they have a way to jump his ult wall.
Nocturne
Be careful of his fear, even if you have tenacity runes, as it can make him win a fight. Besides that though you win most engages against him especially if you keep him in check and counter-gank since his spell shield is basically useless against you. If he can't get ahead or gets behind he's pretty useless against you. His passive got a tiny update to help last hit minions but it doesn't affect much.
Rammus
He shouldn't beat you in the late since you shred tanks. Just be careful of his W since it will shred you faster than you can shred him with your E autos. Once it's down though you should be able to handle him without much damage taken. He has gotten buffs to his ult but I haven't seen his ult be major game changers too often without it being group wide.
Rengar
If you can avoid being near brush you should handle later fights against him. Early game just be careful about him as he should beat you if he's around brush. Later in the game as long as he isn't super far ahead of everyone, he shouldn't be able to burst you down and you should win the fights on him.
Sejuani
Only scary part about her is how much CC you have but even with your tenacity you should be ok. She's still a tank. If she throws her ult at you, W it so it won't freeze you and you should be ok. As long as you can avoid her ult engage most of the time you'll be fine against fighting her since she is tanky and you shred tanks.
Udyr
Not much of a threat against you honestly. He'll run up to you, stun you with his bear form and if you try to 1v1 him and he loses, he'll just stun you again and book it. His bear form will make it hard to keep up with him and every stage of the game will end up the same: He'll engage and fight, if he feels he'll lose with or without help, he'll book it and be hard to catch up with.
Xin Zhao
Just don't fight him early and you'll win later in the game. His early 1v1 is nuts so don't challenge him around then. It's easier later in the game to handle so as long as you can fight him with help to keep him behind or stay ahead till the mid-late game you'll be good.
Dr. Mundo
Not a heavy choice much anymore but still figure I'd mention him. It's around the same as laning phase that he can't do too heavy against you honestly. Just try to dodge his Q to avoid slow and healing him if he's at a distance. If you took ignite over flash even better. After his ult nerfs he's easier to fight as well.
Ivern
Alone, he can't do a single thing except stun you and run, even with Daisy. He has little to no damage and overall relies on teammates since he's a support jungler over anything. Just dodge his Q stun and you basically win every fight.
Karthus
Not too much he can do against you honestly. He's immobile and an easy target to just auto if you can get close enough. If he ults you can just W it to stop it from hitting you, and if he dies you can W as well to stop his passive attacks.
Nidalee
Not alot she can do against you except in the early game. If she invades, just W or dodge her Q spear engage and you'll win if she tries to fight you still despite missing. Late game, easily yours. Her scaling is awful unless she snowballs in which case do NOT let her land a mark on you.
Nunu & Willump
If you took tenacity runes and grievous then you win most if not all fights against him. He's for the most part built tanky so you shred him easily in most stages of the game. If he's AP Nunu, that's a whole other story. Just don't stand in his ult fully charged or he'll chunk you heavily AP or Tank.
Shyvana
Human for Shyv is weak, can't beat you. In her dragon form she's stronger but if you can dodge her W field, which most Shyvs engage with and rely on for engage damage, you should win most fights against her.
Skarner
Heavily team reliant and with tenacity you shouldn't have much issue against CC like his ult.
Gwens true damage has been nerfed down to 50%, which says alot about how far her powers come in the longrun. While that may be the case, she still scales decently well and provides good overall coverage against tank comps making her still pretty viable as a champ to learn.
Just make sure you get use to the 25% reduction to true damage a bit before any ranked so you aren't going into a situation that causes your death due to the champs unfortunate nerfs.
Introduction
I've had an uneasy relationship with Gwen for a while, however after major practice she's grown to be my favorite champion to play in the toplane. Most poeple will build the meta and go for full AP, however if I'm being honest, the meta doesn't let her be as strong as she can be. Her AP scaling is one of the best in the game. The build I managed to find for her gives her hellish more damage output in attack speed while also keeping her as a scary force to fight against.
Why Gwen
Gwen has one of the best scaling potentials in the game with her AP power and attack speed making it hard to fight her and outheal her, making her the one to come out on top to tell the tale of the fight.
Not only is she good against squishier comps, she's also heavily good against almost every tank being that her Q and passive were literally MADE to destroy tanks who get in her path. It's not hard to see why tank mains who know her, hate her.
Heavy healing later in the game, a tank shredding AP queen and one hell of a cute doll, she's a force to be messed with.
If you want to make sure that the enemy tank regrets existing, or the enemy team has too much health, Gwen is your go-to for applying her own version of "Tank-Be-Gone"
The Pros
-Impressive Scaling Power: Gwen has amazing scale into the mid-late game. Once she has Nashors and Rift, her damage makes it hard to 1v1 her. Even fighting her with others can be difficult if she's given a chance to get far enough ahead.
-AP/AS Strong Scaling: Her E no longer can work with just nashors in order to be useful, which is why rageblade comes into play. Using the above builds, you can easily abuse her on-hit damage with attack speed and her impressive AP scaling to make it hard to fight you without risks both in lane and teamfights. Since her E increases attack speed and is on a short CD later in the game, you're gonna be attacking on-hit heavily fast.
-Adaptable To Situations: Gwen can work in multiple positions. She can be heavily team oriented due to her healing and true damage she gains from her Q and the burst her ult gives along with scaling well even if her last 2-3 items are altered. If you need a splitpusher, guess what? She's the one on your team to do it. Her buff to her E gives you decent cooldown back on your E from hitting something after dashing, so when her E hits level 2-3, you can easily just infinitely loop your E to shred towers and make the enemy realize it was a mistake to think you wouldn't be able to destroy it in time
-Impressively Easy Build Path: Gwens build path for her first 3-4 items is straightfoward, which actually makes her build easy to remember. Not only that, your only super expensive item is Riftmaker, and even then after you get that you get your full build insanely faster than some champs, hence why you scale so well
-Cooldown Don't Exist: Thanks to all the buffs Gwen received in Patch 12.7, she basically has no cooldowns late game. With the new CDs on her abilities plus haste on your items, you can have your abilities up near instanly. Your Q at full build only is down for 2-3 seconds, and your E is only down for about 2-4 seconds.
The Cons
-Weak Early Game: Level 1, Gwen can actually outrade some champions, but for the most part from level 2-5 she doesn't have the best lane phase. If you play super smart you're able to make it seem like your damage is impressive enough not to fully mess with, but don't fully rely on her E level 1 as due to previous nerfs it isn't its full potential anymore. Play safe, get some pokes in and when your jungler comes or you get them low enough at level 4, then you can try for a kill if you have a good matchup
-Squishy Champion: Honestly even around late game until you're full build, Gwen is super squishy. I have found a build with Sunfire that works well to make her more frontline powerful in terms of tank if NEEDED, but only if your team lacks any frontline period excluding you. Still, she's squishy all around but is a glass cannon to make up for it.
-Bad Blind Pick: With how many champs could counter Gwen if the enemy gets the chance to do it, picking Gwen blind is a heavy risk option. If the enemy doesn't know how Gwen works or her style and picks a tank, it's good for you depending on the tank. Still in the end, she's not the best to pick blind into so choose her first pick at your own risk
Your Job As Gwen
Gwen has a versatile position on the team that can change what she has to do for her team and what she should do depending on the situation, so here's the best way I can describe it:
Normally, your job is to be the tank shredding frontliner for teamfights if you aren't pushing a lane alone. Tanks should be afraid of your presence because you melt them in sheer seconds due to your passive and Q true damage. When your team is making the big plays, it's important that you do your best to remove the tank UNLESS you catch an enemys carry out in the open. You'll want to remove them first to relieve alot of pressure off your team.
For the most part, this is your main placement on the team is being the one who melts down the tanks and enemy team and gets rid of them early in the fight, but let's just get the stages of the game explained as well:
Early Game:
As Gwen early game, your job is to either set up your jungler to gank your toplaner, or keep the enemy frozen at a spot that will punish them if they try to go for CS but also put them at a disadvantage if they don't. You can't do much on your own early past a level 1 all in until you hit 6.
Your best option is to play safe, and get some Q pokes in depending on the champion. Unless you've poked them enough that you can kill them at level 6+ or your jungler ganks, you won't be too focused on kills and instead getting your first item being Nashors tooth. Rotate for your jungler if they need it, you're not defenseless, you still do decent damage, but your 1v1 power isn't strong enough yet at this stage in most situations till you hit 6 so you'll be a bit team reliant here.
Mid Game:
Mid-Game will be iffy and depends where you're currently at and where your team is, but for the most part you'll be focused on splitpushing when you can, but helping in teamfights when possible. Your true damage and max health passive is the main reason you need to be there especially if the enemy team has heavily tanky members that have a good amount of health already.
You're a safe splitpush option once you have Nashors and at least Leeching Rod building Riftmaker since your 1v1 ability is insanely good. If only 1 enemy, possibly 2 depending on how fed you are shows up you could take maybe take them both on then keep pushing however anymore than 2 it's best to run, but you shred towers very easily, so your main goal should be to splitpush as long as it doesn't put your team in a bad spot in doing so.
Just keep in mind where your team is, what they're doing and what's going to happen and where you should be when it does happen.
Late Game:
At this point, this is where Gwen heavily shines. Late game your build is almost done, towers are pushed in and you can 1v1 basically everyone and win excluding certian ranged champions. During this stage, the splitpush tactic can still be there, but you're one of the strongest frontlines your team has so it's VITAL you be sure you can get to a team fight when you need to.
If you notice a splitpushing enemy it can vary on who handles it. If you have a teammate like a fed Jhin, Kha'Zix, etc who notice and the enemy is squishy and they can handle it easily, then do your best to support the team in the absence of a member.
It is however your job to handle the splitpusher if they're an enemy like Yorick, Sion, Illaoi, etc. as you're the tank shredder. You will obliterate and outheal most of these tanky champs if you play smart. As long as you can keep them in check, your team can feel safer.
In teamfights it's KEY to get the tank out of the way as soon as possible, but also to catch enemies who are dumb enough to get caught out and put out of the fight early if you can. Your W especially is key to taking out any enemy tanks and frontliners as nobody with range can get in the way of the fight, possibly even tricking enemy ranged champs into your range since your W stops outside attacks.
I mention splitpushing alot but this is not your main focus. As I said your main focus is to help your team in fights when possible since you're the frontline, secure objectives and if everything is calm THEN attempt to splitpush.
You don't wanna put your team in a bad situation because you decided you wanted to take a low health tower and suddenly the AD carry on the enemy team gets a quadra taking elder because you thought a tower was more important.
Keep your team safe, get rid of the tanks, structures, outplay the ranged champs and most importantly: Be your teams main source of frontline damage.
Your Job As Jungle Gwen
Jungle Gwens pressure potential for ganks is weaker, and somewhat relies on your laners CC if they have any to help keep them still. Granted while your ult does have a slow, it shouldn't be your main way to get kills like how reliant Fiddle or Evelynn are on their level 6.
Your ganks are gonna rely on your teammates ability to peel with you and their CC power overall. In the jungle you don't have much interferrence for farming excluding invasions at times, but certain matchups in that case are yours regardless as long as you play smart.
Personally, I prefer to start with blue buff on either side, however you can start with red if you'd rather go that route instead. This is how you should do depending on the side you start:
Blue Buff Start:
-Kill Blue, Gromp, Wolves, Raptors then either go for Red or contest for scuttle. Just know you're going to most likely run into the enemy jungler. After this, check your botlane/midlane or toplane/midlane to see how pushed in they are. Mid is riskier with how easy they can walk away, but top should be good first gank if you didn't 1v1 already for scuttle and your toplaner is pushed in. As long as your botlaners pay attention and your W is ready you should hopefully get a decent gank off to take Summs or get a kill.
Red Buff Start:
-Red Buff, Raptors, Wolves, Blue Buff then Scuttle. Same applies here with what was listed above depending on which side you're on.
Once the lane phase is over, your job as Gwen is basically the same as toplane once laning phase is over, except now you're responsible for getting objectives and possibly good ganks as well in most scenarios. Just watch for splitpushers and handle them if you can, get objectives and do your best to splitpush as well if it won't put you in a bad spot.
Gwen Jungle doesn't have alot of pressure without her laners, but trust me, it'll pay off in the long run if you can get assistance with ganks. Not to mention once you get Nashors, as long as others aren't fed, your 1v1, sometimes 2v1 power, is hard to compete with so you'll hit a good powerspike around this time.
Runes
Conqueror is Gwens best main keystone without question. The adaptive force this gives from early to late game provides you with nothing but amazing damage scaling and mid-late game healing
Overall, Gwen does use alot of Mana. Having this ensures you can stay in lane longer without having to leave due to mana loss, and late game combined with your healing it will make it hard for you to run out of health or mana easily. Overall, this is to me better than triumph in the long run
Tenacity is good throughout the entire game, providing you stun resistance against CC. If you can't dodge with your W or because the enemy needs to be in your face to use CC, this will make sure it's hard to keep you interrupted so that you can continue to fight longer without the risk of being forever stunned unless focused down by everything
This is overall preference. Last Stand can help you in situations where you're heavily in need of more damage at the last second in case you wanna give a good fight and can't get the enemy lower than you first and in team fights you're bound to get low if you don't have peel to keep you healed or to tank for you. Overall as well, Gwen excells in prolonged fights which this benefits heavily from
Second Wind Overall helps with sustaining your health during the laning phase. Good against both melee and ranged matchups, second wind makes you able to stay in lane longer after trades so you don't risk losing as much CS after trades
Pairs heavily well with tenacity, Unflinching will make you harder to keep CC'ed. Combining Unflinchings low health response to Tenacity plus Last Stands extra low health damage, you'll be harder to keep pinned down in a fight and be able to fight back with more force once the CC barely sticks around
ALTERNATIVE CHOICES Lethal Tempos changes were godsent for champions like Gwen as extended fights are a gwen mains dream as it ramps up over time with each hit fitting her on-hit playstyle.
If you'd prefer a bit more gold gain and health restore over mana restore in-lane you can choose triumph over presence. Keeping your health topped off if you're almost low even with your healing is a good way to make you a harder target to kill off
A good choice and competetor for Last Stand. It will scale off your opponent if they're missing 40% health instead of scaling off your missing health like Last Stand. It's just a definitely good way to execute enemies
I don't use this too often seeing as how one attack can just remove it early, however if you're against heavy combo champions like Yasuo and Akali or get ganked by Talon/Zed, this could be your lifesaver
Revitalize is good for extra healing or if you took tempo over conqueror. Once you get rift, this will help you heal insanely well and will also be useful if you happen to have champions on your team who can heal you like Soraka or Sona
Ability Rundown
The main reason your healing works so well. Snip Snip! and Needlework do extra bonus magic damage. Your Thousand Cuts Passive also heals for 70% of post-mitigation damage on champions and deals bonus damage to minions below 40% health Gwen Snips her scissors into a cone between 2-6 times depending on her stacks. In order to gain stacks, she has to auto attack enemies and/or objectives only capable of holding 4 stacks at a time. The edge of the cone for Snip-Snip Deals magic damage, however the center of her ability deals true damage to enemies and applies Thousand Cuts. This will be your main damage source all game excluding your autos due to true damage and how fast you can build it up just by autoing. Gwen creates a circle of defense around her called "The Hallowed Mist" that will last 5 seconds. You can move the circle by going towards the edge or recast the W once to bring the circle to center around you. Inside the circle, Gwen is untargetable and immune to almost all abilities and attacks outside the circle if the enemy is not inside the circle with her. It also grants armor and magic resist while she remains in the circle. Use this ability to get ranged champion poke off of you in fights, or get a bit of resistance against enemies if need be.
Gwen will dash and gain bonus on-hit magic damage +8% AP scaled. She also gains bonus attack speed and 50 bonus attack range for 4 seconds. If she attacks anything in those 4 seconds, her E dash cooldown will be reduced by 60%. Her E is also an auto reset and can be cast during all her abilities. This will be what causes your autos to do a **** ton of damage due to on-hit. As long as you hit something after using the dash, your E will always be up the entire fight.
Needlework has 3 active ult charges. The first fires only 1 needle, the second fires 3 and the third fires 5 needles. In order to activate the next two charges after the first, you must auto attack or use snip-snip on an enemy champion or minion. Every needle hit applies thousand cuts and slows enemies. Make sure you use this to burst enemy champions down fast. You can use it to slow running enemies too, but just be mindful to use each charge you need to hit any type of NPCs. You can also use plants too to make your ult charge usable.
Riftmaker
Riftmaker is the first item to build and our mythic. Few champs can use this and profit off of it to the full power like Gwen can as it helps boost up her true damage scaling power thanks to the passive.
70 AP, 15 Haste, 300 Health and 7% Omnivamp plus it gives 8 AP and 2% Omnivamp on your other legendary items. Combine that with the fact you slightly heal already off your own abilities this just boosts your power up to make it where you're a force in the longrun.
Nashors Tooth
Nashors Tooth use to be the required first item in Gwens build but after her changes and move around, it's second. Granting you 100 AP and 50% attack speed once you have this, you'll notice for sure your E damage spike up. It's the most important item in Gwens kit rather you're building tank or AP Gwen overall.
Once you have this and your Nashors, your power spike will hit for the mid-game and it's all uphill in scaling from there.
Boots
Defensive boots are always a preferred go-to in order to have better sustain and should always be built before or immediantely after Riftmaker. Plated Steelcaps are the best against heavy AD and heavy ranged enemy comps overall, and Mercury Treads are best against heavy CC/heavy AP enemy comps. Overall these two are the most I'd recommend building, however if you'd prefer more attack speed in your build if you don't want to use rageblade, you can use Berserker's Graves instead, though I don't recommend it. If you want more magic pen and want damage over resistance or tenacity, you can always go Sorcerer's Shoes instead, though like I said I heavily recommend resistance boots unless you want more damage or attack speed
Guinsoo's Rageblade
Easily, this is what I'm sure most of you were confused about and wanting to know why you should build this. On Gwen, it's heavily useful and works well with her build and would actually be recommended if not for Nashor and Riftmakers good combination together. You ignore the first passive converting crit and will only focus on the second passive. Every hit you do grants a stack on rageblade, and after using your third hit, your on-hit will trigger twice and give you your Qs stacks much faster. So almost every time you go into a fight, the third auto hit will give you two stacks instead of just one, meaning your Q stacks build much faster than they would with any other item or build. The attack speed is insanely useful as well, making her on-hit power much more effective and overall increasing her damage output speed. Being at a cheap 2600 gold and giving her such useful overall passive on-hit stacking, it's a shock this isn't a meta item for her.
Cosmic Drive
Cosmic Drive easily makes the build list as a recommended item. It not only helps with her buffed E and Ult CDs be lower, but helps get your W up much faster which can influence how long you survive and just how long a fight could end up being. It's a good late game powerspike item, and overall is just the most useful if you want movement speed and extra AP
Situational Last Items
All items here are heavily good options for your last item or your 5th item even if you prefer not to take Cosmic. The most likely one you're going to end up taking is Morellonomicon for its grievous wounds against heavy lifesteal teams and good AP scaling for your build.
A good option if they have little lifesteal or you would rather not build grievous is Void Staff as it helps scale well with your AP, and provides you more damage against tanks who built mostly MR or that for some reason just don't take enough damage in your eyes.
Most people may opt for Rabadons Deathcap instead, however I would call this a snowball item on gwen that should not be built unless ahead due to high gold cost. If you're ahead and want that AP burst, go for it. You also have two options for Armor and Magic Resist. You can either go with Randuins Omen which is super useful against heavy AD teams you want to survive against in extended fights, especially since its active helps you gap close enemies and lowers their AD and Crit output.
You could also go Zhonyas Hourglass instead if you want to have AP and Armor. Stasis is ok, but in alot of situations it will put you in a bad spot so I tend not to use this too often unless as bait.
Against heavy AP teams, a really good item is Spirit Visage as you by this point will have majorly good healing, and Visage will grant you not only ability haste and MR, but grant you 25% increased healing as long as the enemy is not overbuilt on grievous.
Finally, you can instead go for Banshee Veil which will grant you a spell shield that blocks the next ability and gives you extra AP, however unless you're getting instant one-tapped by an enemy ability every time I'd avoid this.
Conclusion
Gwen is a heavily versatile and underestimated champion in league. Everything I've described and shown I've tested myself and given my honest opinion over based off of usefulness of situation, power to her kit and overall how well it can help her scale in the entire game.
If you're looking for a champion that can melt tanks and squishies alike who will always be on the frontline, who also ends up being an AP champion when your team goes full AD while she also uses melee, then Gwen is definitely a good choice.
She is hard to learn properly and harder to master, but hopefully with this guide you can learn like I did on the best ways to use her and how to make sure you get the most out of her kit than before.
