You won't run into this pick toplane much but it's hell when you do. Most Cass will all in you level 2 with Conqueror since her E procs it, and her poison makes her E damage heavy, so she could easily flash/ignite you if she chooses if you're low enough. Initially, if you avoid her poison, you can get some decent pokes in, but she'll more than likely W you in place and E you to death. Your best bet is to catch her on mistakes and not feed her early, get jg help if possible. Her W is a slow that stops dashes so your E won't do much in it. W or look away if you know she's gonna ult, level 6 as long as you avoid that and she isn't super ranged you might have a shot at killing her. Later in the game as long as she didn't snowball you're set for fighting her.
Kalista
Hate to say it but this pick is a heavy good counter against any champ that needs to get close. She has good kiting overall and fighting her too long is more favorable for her since she can get in about 10+ spears with lethal tempo before executing you with her E due to how heavy the damage is. I don't see much being done against her if at all unless you got a jungle duo who wants to make her rage quit.
Fiora
Grievous if possible, but not necessary if you think you can outsmart her. Her vital procs are her main damage source/healing sustain in lane, and landing her Q [dash] on ANYTHING, reduces her Q CD by half. You'll want to try to play safer towards your tower, and reset her passive to be harder to reach that'll put her in a bad spot. If you can't afford to due to exp issues, you can stand near a wall if needed, especially during her ult, to make her passive alot harder to proc. Overall just try not to fight her in the earlier stages. Later in the game it's skill based heavily, but more her favor if you don't have grievous already in some form.
Kayle
Early game is the only time you can abuse her, otherwise if you can't get ahead of her pre-6 you're pretty screwed. Most Kayles have a babysitting jungler to make sure they don't die early, or get fed before 6. Once she hits 6 she'll become the lane bully. You'll have to treat it like a ranged matchup afterwards. Late game, she outscales you unless you're farther ahead. Until she hits 16, then get your team.
Lillia
Her strategy is mostly just to walk up, Q, and walk away trying not to take damage over it. You can't catch her most of the time either seeing as how her passive is a burn that grants you slow and her movement speed for landing abilities. Your best bet is to just try to avoid taking Qs now that early game, her Qs power has gone up by a good bit in 12.23. Level 6 if she's super aggro stay near tower. Her damage when she sleeps you is insane. If she's too far when she sleeps you can W so she can't use her E seed to damage you. Once she has Ionian CD boots though, her Q wont have a CD.
Urgot
Once he hits 3, there's not a massive chance you can beat him if he lands his E. His burst power all game is insanely strong and overall he's just a menace to you in lane. If he's smart he'll poke you with range and punish you for trying to trade or start any fights. If he goes in for an engage, use your E to dodge his and be near a minion wave. If he can't land his E or Q, his W wont focus you down right away unless he's insanely lucky giving you a chance to abuse him. If you didn't use it already, save your W for his ult so when he fires it, it'll phase through you and he cant get the execute. Later in the game be cautious, but you should be able to slightly handle him better
Singed
Against Gwen, singed is a pretty heavily good counter choice. Obviously you can't chase him cause you know the rule, "Don't chase Singed", but mostly his displacement helps him get good ganks off, his Q punishes you for trying to chase and his W stops your E and Flash, even roots you if you get tossed into it. Honestly, rather he stays in lane or Proxxy, he is gonna be a pain. Just try to get fed off CS and if he makes any mistakes, take huge advantage of it. Keep your jungle warded too, he has no issues trying to steal camps
Teemo
Teemos blind is the main source of problem to getting your Q stacks. I'd recommend building damage above attack speed, seeing as how if you don't have stacks before fighting him, you'll just be using weak Qs and ult. If you manage to get close he'll usually just flash or run to a planted shroom for slows. Get sweeper once he's close to 6 and don't forget your Q can hit him even if he's trying to hide in brush.
Warwick
Truth be told, top Warwick is a pain. Most of the time he will take lethal and with how gutted grievous is, you'll have a hell of a time against him. Try not to do extended trades. You can do short trades but you'd have to do them constantly or he'll just heal off the minions. He may all in you once he hits level 3, but definitely when he hits 6 he will have no problem with it, so be on guard for that, and keep ignite ready so when you're both low he can't just heal the win.
Wukong
A good wukong knows no lane equal in being a trickster. His E increases attack speed, his Q extends with levels and shreds armor and his W lets him dash away. Be mindful that he can easily beat you in most early stages and then at level 6 it depends who can play the game smarter. Just know if he's too low, he's gonna just try to W away so you can't get a kill. Be heavily careful of his ult as it got a hefty AD scaling buff. Damage wise however in an all out fight he should win if he ults.
Jax
After his rework Jax has DEFINITELY gotten stronger. This man is scary. Very. Just make sure that if you notice his E, try to move out of range, in brush, or somewhere he can't reach you without throwing down a ward first, and definitely don't auto him during the E. His trades are more favorable for him if he can get his full combo off so try to E right as you feel he's about to Q since it only jumps him where he pressed it, it does not track.
Zac
If it wasn't already obvious, you need grievous VERY early. His blob sustain is just overall annoying so that he can just keep healing for doing Zac things. His W and E got damage nerfs but he's still a force in-lane so be careful. I'd say among most of his abilities, try to use your E to dodge his, since it's his main combo starter. If you dodge it, he has no way out but to run or CC you with his Q and possibly flash if he's losing. If he screws up, you're free to all-in him so long as he doesn't have help. His E CD to escape is massive. Once he's in his passive form, you shouldn't have a hard time killing the blobs since your Q can get a decent amount of them when close enough
Aatrox
Several nerfs later and a buff now, Aatrox cements himself as a major danger to Gwen players if the Aatrox knows how to abuse his Q knockups well. Your kit really has no counter play to his. Always take ignite and get oblivion orb early to help downscale his healing. If he's not a good Aatrox or you find yourself outtrading him, it may scare him into a bad spot and he wont be a problem later. I'd just recommend saving your ignite for when he ults so that his healing isn't as effective for if he tries to heal at super low health.
Akali
She's gotten annoying in terms of power but early game is more of a skilled matchup depending whos better at trading who. You'd think it's Akali but Gwen can get some good poke in too. Avoid her E, especially when you're low so she doesn't E in for execute. When she hits 6, her aggression is gonna spike heavily. If you can avoid getting too low while she still has PT.2 of her ult for execute and avoid her E you definitely win that fight. Otherwise later in the game is heavy on reaction time.
Nasus
Multiple buffs and changes later, this man is a beast of a tank if he gets his stacks and especially if he's fed on top of that. It may seem strange, but LET him push the wave to you. If you can keep your minions close-under your tower, you have a better chance to punish him when he goes for Q stacks, meaning if he's scared he'll have to spam E or risk the trade damage while you're still able to decently CS if you can control the wave properly. Just be cautious of level 6 engages. His lifesteal is heavily strong and due to his W, he's gonna make you take the fight in his favor of running or killing.
Darius
Do not ever, and I mean EVER, attempt a level 1 fight with this man. He will win. His bleed stacks make it impossible to win prolonged fights without backup, and is overall just a pain. Take short trades if possible. If he pulls you in with E, stay close to him as he'll more than likely use his Q to stack up and heal. Once he misses his Qs outer ring you can either run or fight depending on the situation, but if he's got 3-4 stacks on you already I'd back up fast if near tower. If you aren't, he'll just ghost after you for the kill.
Garen
Garen has good short-trades when fighting him. Most Garens will go for a Q+E so that he can close the gap, land a heavy hit, then shred you with E. If you hear the noise or see his Q animation, gain some distance a bit, wait for it to wear off. If he's not paying attention to his Q, you can go in right as it wears off for some good trade damage. After he has Greaves and hits 6 though be careful, that E damage will stack and that ult will execute. Just try to keep favorable trades in when possible so you can prevent his healing passive.
Riven
Early Riven will be mostly in her favor, as a smart riven level 2-3 can all in you and kill you if you're not careful enough. If you can at least avoid her Q knockup and/or her W stun you have a better chance to win the fight. Be mindful her autos gain more damage after every ability use, and her ult executes off missing health. If you think she's gonna try to ult snipe you, keep your W ready if you didn't use it for the resistances. Lane phase though if she's a good Riven she'll just hard aggression you. Once it gets to mid game it depends whos fed and who can react to who faster.
Renekton
He's a good lane bully if played right but hasn't seemed to be as threatening as he usually is. That doesn't mean he's still not as dangerous, if a good renekton player comes around he can combo you into hell with little to no retaliation. If you're able to Q poke without punishment go ahead, but for the most part as long as he can't snowball his late game power isn't going to be effective. A short but good indicator he wants to go in is if you hear/see his Ws aura
Pantheon
A pantheons strategy is more to just try to Q poke you until level 3, then jump you with his full combo since he can just back out with his E unpunished. If you wanna trade back, wait for his E to wear off then go in. HIs CDs are very long besides his Q [unless he threw his spear], so don't be afraid to take a trade if you have the health. Just don't engage on low health, his Q gains massive damage if you have too low of health. He should be manageable later in the game if he gave you lane phase trouble.
Quinn
Quinn can easily put you at range with her E and just keep kiting you if you aren't careful. Her E puts her JUST outside your range to attack her so make sure if you go for a chase your E is up. More than likely though she'll probably if anything flash away then keep kiting so play aggro if you notice her slipups, otherwise I wouldn't try poking too much seeing as if she's smart and aggro she can put you back in place. Also ping if she's missing, she can travel the map very fast in her ult.
Gnar
Gnar in his mini form is much more dangerous than his mega form to you, but both are a pain. He'll just constantly poke you down and when he goes Mega he will try to jump in and W you for stuns. Once he hits 6, stay away from walls when hes about to mega or he'll stun combo you, and try to avoid his mega Q or you'll feel how strong it actually is. You can't really fight him on your terms since most of the time he'll just E away till you're in kite range or all your abilities CDs are up.
Olaf
Early Olaf fights are not a good idea or at least not prolonged ones. More than likely he'll just Q you for axe slow and auto you to death. Get grievous early, short trade if you can and try to dodge his axe to avoid armor shred. Just NEVER, get in a prolonged fight with this man. Later in the game won't matter too heavy as you should win if you play right.
Maokai
Maokais rework has given him some backbone and brought him back into power. Full tank Maokai even can 3v1 a good team and come out alive. Early game due to his buffs his power is a bit stronger than yours but as the game progresses you obviously scale better especially since he is going full tank. If you know he has a sapling in a brush, stay away from it or bait it out and have it chase a minion instead. He has to be in your face for trades and will use his saplings to poke so avoid that as best as possible. You can W his ult as well if he isn't close enough so keep that in mind. His passive is great sustain so he doesn't always have to worry about losing too much health if he waits around long enough. He's just a CC machine so be cautious when getting ganked since he has enough to keep you still. His passive sustain isn't as strong now but still be mindful of it.
Gragas
This more revolves around AP Gragas, not Tank. Tank is still dangerous but I'd put him at even. AP is the main threat here. Despite the fact he may not seem like it, a full AP Gragas can outdamage you completely if you let him. Avoid Q poke if possible and try to poke him if he steps up for minions. Just make sure you're careful he doesn't E in on you for a full combo, that will definitely hurt.
Yone
Firstly, get grievous. You'll regret it if you don't. Past that, in the early stages he will be super aggressive once he hits 3 so this is a stay near/under tower scenario. Once you hit 6 and hopefully took grievous, you can try to all in him but only if your ignite is up or he'll most likely just get the heal up and win. Just be mindful if he uses his E he might go in for a full engage.
Fun fact I also found out: If he ults you but his ult ends behind you when you're using W, it's considered a teleport and his ult is longer than your W so he will glide right past you and behind you making him go back to his body or try to fight you in a weird spot.
Tryndamere
Tryndamere is the type to just all-in you nearly anytime he wants if he gets a full crit bar or hits 6, since his 6 just makes him immortal to every kind of death. If he tries to fight you, within reason, give a fight back Pre-6 to show him your damage if you think you can handle it, but I would still be careful seeing as how his AD growth has buffed up. His health growth MIGHT benefit Gwen later, but I'd still always be careful of a Tryn after he hits 6 since if he's confident in the win he'll just ult, tower dive and get out with probably no death chance.
Dr. Mundo
Mundos changes in 12.23 have made him a MENACE of a champion to fight against. His whole kit had some sort of change to make him a late game beast that is capable of tanking whole teams, including you, if he gets too far ahead. You're still a good matchup for him however since most Mundos build Heartsteel, so the more health he gets, the better response you are to him. Just make sure you're heavily careful about 1v1ing him when he ults. Take ignite, use it the second he ults and tries to keep the fight going. In the early game, if he hasn't poked you down you win pretty much every 1v1. Late game you should still be able to handle him, but have someone nearby just in case.
Volibear
Volibear is a tank with massive early damage. His W damage heals and increases in damage if he marks you and his Q is his main engage. Honestly, this is mostly in his favor early game and one of your harder matchups especially against an aggro voli. Do your best to poke if his Q is down and don't let him hit his W a second time if you're marked. Once you're low or his junglers nearby, playing under tower wont work as he will just ult, disable the tower and hope you're dead before leaving. Later in the game if he's full tank it'll be a bit better for you, but early game just avoid feeding him or he'll be too strong to kill any stage. He gives himself more health in his ult so you do more damage to him because of it but don't fully engage him if he's too fed or has you too low for a fight.
Akshan
Not a common pick anymore but still seen regardless even if rarely. Most Akshan top will play aggro to try to get you to the point of an E swing execute with how many times he can proc his passive and PTA. If he E swings in prematurely, body block him so he's stuck in your face and forced to flash or run, especially now that his E is infinite until he hits something or lets go. If he's just outside of your body block range, W so he has to jump into the circle or land in a weird spot since he can't hit you. Obviously, W his ult or stand behind tower/minions to avoid execute.
Kled
Kled has gotten a bit of an update allowing his Q to do more AD scaling initial damage with the second cast doing more as well and a lower W CD. This just means be more careful in the lane phase as his W wont be down as long anymore. For the most part, just try to dodge his Q either by E or W, poke him down, but most importantly: WATCH. FOR. SKAARLS. BAR. If he gets skaarl back at the last second right as you're about to win, he'll win the fight as it restores most of his health. Just make sure if he's gonna get him back you back up. Also if he's about to fall off Skaarl be careful, there's a super tiny window he's immune to attacks and even if it doesn't seem like it, you can mess up and miss one of your important abilities if you arent careful.
Illaoi
Illaoi is a scary champ, at least in team fights. During the lane phase she isn't as scary as long as you can avoid her E and Q pokes, her E especially. Stand behind minions to deny her E grab so she has to sit at a weird spot and risk losing CS if she wants to E. Her Q at first wont do much, but it does stack after a bit so be careful. Once she hits Level 6+, if your jungler wants to gank, I'd advise against it since her tentacles from her ult will put her conq to max right away and heal her massively. She thrives in group fights so always be ready to back up if she E's someone when shes surrounded
Malphite
Malphite has somehow managed to fall off, even in this tank meta, in general. This goes against Gwen as well [At least Tank wise, AP is a different story]. Regardless, the most Malphite will try to do is just spam you with Qs until he hits 6 for an all in, or hope to poke you down enough that his jungler will come in for a gank. If he makes the mistake you can get in some E+Q pokes but don't over-extend. He cant beat you in a 1v1 without ult, but if he's going AP and has at least lost chapter in the early game he can pretty easily one shot you if you can't dodge his ult. Just watch for weirder movements. If he hits 6 and moves differently he badly wants to ult in. He did get a buff to his E armor scaling damage in 12.23 but considering you're AP, that doesn't apply to you unless he's going full armor for damage.
Gwen
Obviously all skill based. At level 1 whoever lands the first E auto wins. Do your best to poke her and avoid her poking as well. At level 6 try to W her ult if you know she's not in range to hit you with it. Whoever is smarter, can hit more true damage Qs and builds faster wins.
Vayne
Vayne has a pretty good kit for keeping herself at a range that benefits her, and like most ranged toplaners, will know what the towers range is to poke you without aggro. Most will play aggro so this is more of a "play safe" lane near tower. Stay away from walls so she can't just sit and wail on you after she lands her E. Most of the time, Vayne will just ghost, flash or E+Q away if you ult her and get too close for her liking. If your jg doesn't camp her [like she deserves] or she can't get a kill off you, she'll get impatient and try to roam after a bit for snowball kills unless she's very committed to getting that tower.
Irelia
Grievous, no question. This is a very skilled up matchup at most stages. This is one champ I do not advise fighting in a 1v1 at level 1-2 right away as even if you stack Conq first, her passive can overshadow it and help her win the fight. Poke her when she goes in for CS, and if you need to, W her ult so it phases through you. Once shes in your face as long as she isn't fully stacked off conq and her passive already you win most fights
Kennen
Kennen is a very good reason why you need to run tenacity due to his slow/stun kit. He'll auto and Q alot so try to stand behind minions to avoid his Q at least. More than likely he'll just E away if you get close so if he makes the mistake of using it randomly and is still close to you, abuse him for it.
Mordekaiser
Mordekaiser like you is a bruiser heavy champ capable of fighting people on his terms. You'll wanna do your best to avoid his Q poke from isolation so stand in your minion wave, at first it wont hurt but over time even in the wave it'll start to stack up. If you rather not fight in his realm either take QSS to escape or Zhonyas to stall and get your team time to gather up. Don't be afraid to fight him, he may be strong but Gwen hurts more than what people expect.
Poppy
Poppy can be a bit tricky at times but you still have better shots at winning the fights. Her passive will let her poke you but it won't do enough to really be a threat. Avoid being near walls so she can't E stun you and be mindful that her ults stun time has increased by a bit so she's got even more CC potential. Don't dash at her if her W is up as it'll just knock you up and stop you from chasing, even then she's still faster with her w. As long as she isn't fed or building full damage and is ahead of you you'll win nearly every fight later in the game
Rengar
This is more of a smarter matchup above all else. Stay away from his brush as he'll just constantly use it to jump on you for poke. Once you hit 3 you can try to poke him if he pounces you, just be mindful he will try to run back to brush to get you, if that is the case W just outside of brush range and ward it so you can see where he's hiding. I only recommend chasing him into his brush if he's low or you know you can burst him at half health.
Sett
Despite argument, it's an even 1v1 with Sett depending on who can play smarter. Sett has the better early damage but he has alot longer cooldowns to abuse. If he misses his E you can always Q poke and maybe auto him once before he'll try to chase you with Q. Just be mindful of his W especially full grit. You don't want that center hitting you unless you want a winning fight to instantly go south.
Yasuo
This is a very annoying matchup but not at all impossible. Get grievous early or you'll regret it. Avoid his tornadoes when possible and remember he will dash around everywhere if he thinks you'll kill him or he wants to make himself hard to hit. Try to get his passive shield down before a fight too as that shield honestly absorbs alot of your Q damage even in the center. Watch for windwall too, it will easily stop your ult.
Tahm Kench
Tahm is still a tank, an annoying one at times honestly. He's only even because his tank power is backed up by insane damage all game if you aren't careful. With 12.11, his passive damage increased with an ult shield increase and a Q healing buff, making him have more lane sustain if he lands hits on you. Just be cautious, avoid his Qs and remember if he feels he will lose a fight he will W away and since you have no stuns, you cant stop it. Be heavily careful of his Q and W as now it stacks off AP pretty heavily. As weird as it is to say, AP Tahm might start to return as a pick.
Trundle
Trundle is a pain, however even if he takes lethal tempo you can beat him in the early 1v1. Just be mindful that his kit is meant to raise his stat power while also lowering yours. Late game can be very heavily different depending on the build he takes but again, he's a tank, so you both will do insane damage to each other. His W CD is much higher after he uses it is a decent time to try to get a good trade or kill.
K'Sante
K'Sante has proven to grow in power in the early game as well as the late game, but you should still have confidence early if you're capable of not constantly taking his passive empowered autos every 2 seconds. He has a bit more sustain now so just be weary of that. If he all-outs you, ignite him at any stage so that he can't just heal it off his max health omnivamp. Trust me, that scales hard. You CAN use your W to block his Q3, but it isn't always worth it seeing as how the animation is pretty easy to spot, if not his movements give it away
Bel'Veth
With her new update allowing large minions to give her passive stacks, people are gonna assume she's lane viable. Granted, she is somewhat but not till level 3. You can normally beat her if you're careful. Try to click her at least once so your autos keep hitting her and you're not struggling to hit her while she dashes, try to dodge her W for a 5th dash reset, and E away from her when she uses her E to avoid her lifesteal/resistance, preferably behind her if she's low enough to kill so she has to run or flash away. Wait out her true form if you're not confident you can kill her but for the most part your kit isn't half bad to take her on.
Camille
Get grievous, trust me you'll need it. Camille actually can't outdamage you even in longer fights unless she's heavily fed. Avoid her charged Q so she doesn't get off that massive true damage and be mindful that her E stuns and her W outer ring heals. If you notice a Camille E, there's only three reasons I've noticed: 1). She wants to escape a fight she isn't wanting | 2). Her junglers nearby and she's about to hold you still or 3). [Rarely] she wants to start a heavy fight with you. Most of the time unless you're already low you'll win any long trades. Late game as well is in your favor. Her health makes you incredibly dangerous to her.
Gangplank
Gangplank is still a pretty decent lane bully due to his Q poke, but not an impossible to fight matchup. He'll be a pain at first only just Qing you till you're low before going in for his passive and ignite. Mostly though, keep his barrels in check. If he can't use his main damage dealer to assist him he can be easier to kill. Just don't feed him, that's the worst thing you can do.
Ornn
Ornn has some scary early damage with his brittle effect coming into play in fights. He will probably engage you with W when you go in for minions or try to poke you with Q. Poke him when possible as you do more damage once you hit 6. Avoid being near walls, make sure not to get knocked up by his Q+E combo and W his ult if you can since it's too huge to dash away from. Mid-Late game he won't be able to kill you unless you're already low.
Shen
His W shield is the only real effective thing against you since it stops your E autos but not your Q so if he goes into you while you have full Q it's not hard to give back a decent trade after his auto shield is down. Just know you can't do much if he ults to his teammates unless he's low enough to kill.
Cho'Gath
Cho'Gath has some good early damage on his E, even able to scare you level 1 in a 1v1 if you aren't careful. His main damage and engage is his Q, so as long as you can avoid or W it, you're usually golden. He may go into an even level however, as he has gotten a sustain buff along with W damage and now has a CD on his ult, so be careful and remember it if possible.
Udyr
Not much of a threat any stage towards you especially building full AD/AP/Tank. In lane it's your fight unless he's camped by jungle or you mess up your skills insanely badly. As long as you don't feed him in lane and you don't take heavy trades over and over without trading back you win every time.
Yorick
He can be a bit of a menace once he hits 6 thanks to his Maiden, but his lethality build took a nerf, so that's a good thing to see happen so his little creatures aren't killing you by themselves. You can easily W or E his E to avoid being marked, and just E over his own W if he tries to trap you. Your kit is overall a menace against his, just avoid being marked so you don't get jumped and you win most fights all game.
Sion
Sions been making a slight comeback thanks to his new favorite build being Heartsteel+Titanic [which both still proc in his passive form]. However, you're still the main thing that stops him from really doing much. If you can delete him early you shouldn't need to be concerned with him. Just be mindful his Q did get a damage boost at every rank so watch for that, especially if he goes lethality.
Jax is a good counter pick to Gwen though not picked jungle too often anymore. Almost every fight except maybe in the late game will be his. His E will easily counter you since you need autos to get your Q stacks and he blocks them. If you can at least dodge his initial E engage you might have a slim chance. W yourself as well if he activates it early so he cant jump to you unless he wards into your W or there are minions nearby. Mostly though if he lands the stun he wins the fight since its a good burst.
Kindred
Good matchup against you. Her Q lets her get away and decide fights and her E lets her do extra damage if she lands all the marks. If you can manage to get your camps before she does or gank her for entering your camp and catch her off guard you should do better later in the game. Not much you can do about her ult, just get your Q stacks up so when it heals her your Q already melts her back down. If your team doesn't feed and you keep her stacks for yourself she can't keep up as much.
Lillia
In a full on fight she wins due to her heavy burst power plus her sleep doing bonus damage if it lands on you along with her bonus movement speed and low Q CD that's now stronger in the early game. She can easily invade and unless your laners come to CC chain her she can get out pretty easily. Overall she's an annoying champ to go against at every stage, and her clear is now a bit easier due to buffs so expect her to visit your jungle after she clears hers out. Just dont let her feed mostly and you should be good, especially if your team can land CC to keep her still then she wont be a threat.
Pantheon
Pantheon is starting to see more action in the jungle and like in lane, he's still dangerous to fight. When he hits level 3 he can normally full combo you and nearly kill you in one go before you can get a proper auto off since if you meet at scuttle you should be somewhat half-ish health if you're not good at kiting. It's best to not take him on without help from your laner otherwise you're gonna notice fast why he's a good counter to Gwen. He has decent clear now due to his Q doing 105% damage to monsters so just make sure to be ready for him to clear a wave and come right back with a possible abusive invade that he can just get done and walk out from before anyone on your team can help.
Volibear
Volibear JG is a pain since early game he can pretty easily beat you due to his kit. His Q for the stun chase, his W for the heals/extra damage and his E for the shields and decent damage he has on it. Mostly wait till you have help, once it's later in the game he should be easier if he isn't hyperfed.
Warwick
You don't have a fighting chance early in the game unless you felt hellishly brave and took ignite over flash, then maybe you can fight him early. His lifesteal is pretty insane so definitely save ignite for those fights he's gonna ult to avoid him getting a cheap win. It's iffy later however depending how he builds and if he's ahead.
Zac
He. Is. Insanely. Annoying. The meta for Zacs has mostly been full AP health tank or a hybrid Tank/AP build that makes them do heavy damage while also tanking your whole team. Honestly, if you're against a Zac, just try to dodge his E engage and mow him down quickly if you don't get melted right away. You definitely need a good team nearby. His passive healing and Q got some buffs to help him out a bit, so just watch yourself when he goes for his healing with blobs.
Nocturne
Nocturne has gotten pretty scary as of late and isn't expected to stop his reign anytime soon. Even with full tenacity his fear still lasts long enough to do some real turning on you so be careful of that. I wouldn't recommend taking fights with him until later in the game when you're more built up in damage, unless he's alot lower in health than you. If he falls behind, he's not a big threat anymore. If you have to disengage, try to E over a wall to force him to ult/flash for you since his Q makes him faster if you leave a trail. His spellshield against you is useless, so don't worry over it. Your W will only protect you from his ult if he hasn't targeted you yet, so be careful of that.
Darius
Not a pick I see TOO often but dangerous when he is picked and runs ghost/smite almost every time. Early game, you obviously won't beat him because his passive damage is way too strong. Mid-Late game is iffy depending if either of you are ahead of each other and who plays smarter. If he Qs, try to stay in the inner ring to deny him healing and a bleed stack. He'll engage with a pull so just know it's easier to fight him with help and stand in the inner Q circle to get bleed slower.
Diana
There's a decent chance early game you can beat her but it isn't massive. You need to play smart, if you can avoid her Q engage you have somewhat of a shot, however later in the game is iffy depending on what you built. She's a burst machine and most Dianas still build sunfire into heavy AP and do more damage than anyone in the game. Just be careful about challenging her if she's even remotely ahead.
Bel'Veth
In early 1v1s you should be able to handle her unless she's got higher health and you sit in her E. She's an example of someone who could also probably honestly beat you in the later game if she's too overfed off your team. Your E is your best friend to avoid hers and her W so she cant get a Q reset. If possible, fight her out of her true form and you'll easily have a better chance.
Evelynn
Evelynn won't be an early game problem, and even if she isn't, she can still beat you if she gets a full charm off and you aren't careful first engage. For the most part though avoiding that will make her back off. It's around Mid-Late game you need to be careful as she can start shredding pretty well if you aren't cautious of her location since her W has MR shred. Most I'd advice is keep an eye out for her and know that she's more than likely behind you guys if she isn't seen in a team fight. It is IMPERATIVE you don't let her get close if she charms you since her Q does more damage to marked targets, and the charm now lasts longer.
Taliyah
Her E field makes dashing to her hard as it'll stun you and her Q poke is dangerous as it can burst pretty hard most stages of the game. Her Q is spammable too especially after her update so your W can save you a bit of time but she'll most likely just do everything in her kit to keep you away till your Ws down.
Trundle
Dangerous champ to go against regardless. Most build lethal tempo and will whack you in the face constantly. His kit is meant to hinder you while boosting him. Late game, heavily iffy on what he built but due to his ult he'll win most engages against you if he built heavy attack speed. His attack speed was lowered along with his ults max health damage, but still be careful regardless.
Zed
This only applies to good Zeds who know how to use him properly, if he's not good he's a minor threat. Zeds are insanely dangerous as a good one can just ult you, take out most of your health and have his ult execute you before you can trade back. Chasing him is pointless due to his shadow. Your best bet if you see him is to W so he has to be in your face to ult then try to dodge his 2-3 shadows Q so you don't get melted instantly.
Rek'Sai
Early game is the Queens here, no question. The damage is nuts and just doesn't fall off. If she manages to get fed, it's usually a gg. Try to avoid early game fights without help from your team if she gets caught out. Later in the game you should have a better shot at fighting her so long as she doesn't keep you killed because you're off guard.
Ekko
Skill based, he has good burst against you due to his 3 hit passive but once that's down it's more dependent on who's better at their skills. If he's low Level 6+, he'll ult if he knows he'll lose. You'll have to E away and W if he's gonna be outside the W ring or flash away or you'll be knocked out of the fight instantly. This is one of the examples Rylais works too since he'll run if he's too beat. Passive burst and ult damage heavily increased.
Garen
I don't see Jungle Garen too often anymore but he can still be scary if you aren't careful. In the early game if you can at least out-kite his E, you have a heavy chance of winning the 1v1. It's the mid-game that's scary depending on how fed he is and what path he took. Lethality Damage Garen is scary. Same with normal Stride tank garen, but that's a bit more manageable if you're careful. If you have to escape, wait till he uses his Q before ulting so he can't just brush it off.
Graves
As much as I hate admitting this, this is skill based Early/Mid game. I'd avoid early game 1v1s though without help unless he's low because most good graves will auto you pretty easily 3 times in a row. MId-Late game can always depend on skill and who's higher in feed. If you're even if you can avoid his ult and melt him down fast enough with your Q and ult you normally win. His late game power was buffed along with his ult so DEFINITELY W or flash the ult
Qiyana
Not often picked anymore honestly. Even if she is, it's 50/50 on if she's even a real threat. If she's a bad Qiyana, you win pretty much every fight if you can dodge her Q engages. If she's a good Qiyana, that's another story. Try to predict her Q with your E, maybe W if you have to and avoid terrain [Walls and Brush] so her ult cant just burst damage stun. If you can do that, you're pretty set.
Kayn
Both Kayns are skill based but Red goes to major. Early game you should be able to beat Kayn before he evolves as long as you're careful and aren't already low. If he goes blue just dodge his W engage that procs his passive extra damage and you should do good. Red Kayn, dodge his W with your E or W, if he Qs in try to dodge with your E then engage him. His lifesteal is nuts so you NEED to get grievous no matter what or he'll outheal everyone. 12.14 has given Rhaast a bit of healing power nerf but grievous is still a must have against the man. 12.23 has Shadow bonus damage when engaging in combat stronger, so just be careful of the early engage he'll have.
Kha'Zix
Another example of skill based matchup. Don't 1v1 him early game without help since he gets more damage on isolated targets and your 1v1 isn't incredible at the start. Mid game just depends who's more fed, Late game is yours if it reaches that far since your 1v1 power is stronger than his burst and you should have enough health to stay alive. Just dodge his E with yours and you should be ok.
Lee Sin
Depends on how good the Lee Sins combos are. If he's not a combo god you should be ok. Early game is skill based but should be yours if you play smart enough around his abilities and dodge his Q engage. Late game is still more skill based but you should win if he doesn't have help. Just make sure you know his abilities are a bit more spammable now that they all cost less energy than before
Master Yi
You should beat him in early 1v1s since that's when he's weakest. You're both late game scaling champs, but he barely beats you. If you can manage to wait till he Qs before you throw an ult or Q you should be ok. Just wait out certain abilities and you'll do fine. If you get to late game however and he's full build most likely he beats you in every 1v1.
Olaf
Grievous. Easily. Doesn't matter who else is on their team if he's on it take grievous. He'll win early 1v1s. Mid-Late game is skilled-ish. If he ults, try to kite him out until it ends so he doesn't have extra damage anymore. Besides that if you can manage to burst him down faster than he can auto you should win. Just watch out for his W shield.
Poppy
A tank that can challenge you but most Poppy Junglers are damage based so she'll be a bit harder hitting. If you see her, avoid being near walls so she can't stun you with her E. Late game even if she's fully built she shouldn't be able to beat you unless she fully stuns you to oblivion with help since you shred tanks. Don't E towards her if her W is active as it's a dash, so you'll get knocked up.
Shaco
Every Shaco is iffy. AP Shaco shouldn't cause you a ton of issue if you take oracle, but AD is different. If AD Shaco can get behind you full build and auto you it's over. I've played against him as a full build Ornn and he would do 2k health damage in his 3 backstab autos, so just make sure not to engage him if he's ahead.
Vi
Don't fight her early, she'll win. In the later games it just depends on what kind of Vi she is. Vi can take alot of roles in teams so it's hard saying exactly what scenario you're against. I can't give you an accurate informative guess on this since I see so many different Vi players.
Viego
Dodge his stun if it's charged up and you'll be ok. You do more damage early than him and in most stages of the game if I'm honest. If you're behind he'll beat you but mostly it's your game.
Elise
More depends on who can react faster. Most Elise players build AP and their Q does heavy burst. Use your E to dodge her human web stun, W either her stun or her spiderling if you have to. If you can dodge her initial CC/Engage abilities she's an easier target. Just don't fight her if she's ahead. Her Q damage has gone up ONLY in human form and she'll be a bit more beefy, but because of how you're built that's a bit of an advantage for you.
Amumu
He's a CC Tank, both things you should be fine against since you melt tanks and if you took Unflinching as a rune. In most 1v1s you should win at most stages unless you're already low. Just be careful if he has a team around as this could still prove trouble if he has help, other than that he can't beat you alone. His kit was buffed to be more max health reliant with a couple in-between nerfs that are meant to help him late game.
Fiddlesticks
If you took Tenacity Runes and Merc Treads you should be fine honestly against his fear. He should be easy to 1v1 most of the game since he can't spam fear on you. Just wait for his ult to wear off before you engage if he ults in and he can't really beat you in any stage except maybe mid unless he's super fed or has help. Just know his Q fear duration has gone up in 12.13 and his ult damage has gone up alot as well, so don't take the fight in his ult and make sure you have tenacity for him.
Hecarim
Most Hecarims try to build tank or a hybrid tank/damage. Early game is iffy but Level 6+ 1v1 if you have tenacity runes you win if he all ins since you're stronger against champs like him. His scaling power tanky wise is lowered but his damage has gone up, so always be weary later in the game due to that increase.
Jarvan IV
Jarvan is only dangerous in the early game since most Jarvans only build to be tanky and rely on getting ahead due to his insane damage early. If you can avoid fighting him in a 1v1 most of the early game unless you have help he should have a decent struggle keeping up. Late game is yours. If he ults you, you have two choices in this matter: First, you can just E out of the ring, or two, you can W and take the fight as your W and his ult zone are about the same size so nobody can outside interfere with range unless they have a way to jump his ult wall.
Rammus
Late game, he shouldn't beat you. He's meant to scale off armor and even if he does, your passive shreds him the more beefed up he is. The only real way he hurts you is if you auto him during his W, but you should still outdamage it since your damage will be mostly AP. Just avoid really autoing him during W and you'll be ok.
Rengar
If you can avoid being near brush you should handle later fights against him. Early game just be careful about him as he should beat you if he's around brush. Later in the game as long as he isn't super far ahead of everyone, he shouldn't be able to burst you down and you should win the fights on him.
Sejuani
Only scary part about her is how much CC you have but even with your tenacity you should be ok. She's still a tank. If she throws her ult at you, W it so it won't freeze you and you should be ok. As long as you can avoid her ult engage most of the time you'll be fine against fighting her since she is tanky and you shred tanks.
Shyvana
Human for Shyv is weak, can't beat you. In her dragon form she's stronger but if you can dodge her W field, which most Shyvs engage with and rely on for engage damage, you should win most fights against her. Her E got a nerf in max health damage, so it may not be too heavily as reliable but will still hurt.
Udyr
Udyr jungle or lane isn't a heavy threat but jungle is just a bit more scary as if he catches you off guard while you're taking camps it can be in his favor. Just try to do a mini-kite if possible while damaging him. Level 6+ every fight unless he's super fed should be yours. Before then, just be insanely careful. If he gets ahead, it's gonna be a jungler fight of the ages.
Xin Zhao
Just don't fight him early and you'll win later in the game. His early 1v1 is nuts so don't challenge him around then. It's easier later in the game to handle so as long as you can fight him with help to keep him behind or stay ahead till the mid-late game you'll be good.
Dr. Mundo
Not a heavy choice much anymore but still figure I'd mention him. It's around the same as laning phase that he can't do too heavy against you honestly. Just try to dodge his Q to avoid slow and healing him if he's at a distance. If you took ignite over flash even better. After his ult nerfs he's easier to fight as well. They're trying to bring him back as a Jungler with late game power, but I don't see him changing as a threat
Ivern
Alone, he can't do a single thing except stun you and run, even with Daisy. He has little to no damage and overall relies on teammates since he's a support jungler over anything. Just dodge his Q stun and you basically win every fight.
Karthus
Not too much he can do against you honestly. He's immobile and an easy target to just auto if you can get close enough. If he ults you can just W it to stop it from hitting you, and if he dies you can W as well to stop his passive attacks.
Nidalee
Not alot she can do against you except in the early game. If she invades, just W or dodge her Q spear engage and you'll win if she tries to fight you still despite missing. Late game, easily yours. Her scaling is awful unless she snowballs in which case do NOT let her land a mark on you.
Nunu & Willump
If you took tenacity runes and grievous then you win most if not all fights against him. He's for the most part built tanky so you shred him easily in most stages of the game. If he's AP Nunu, that's a whole other story. Just don't stand in his ult fully charged or he'll chunk you heavily AP or Tank. Especially after his unnecessary and super beefy buff to his ult. If you have to, just W his ult so you're still standing in it, but if he's not in the W it wont damage or slow you.
Skarner
Heavily team reliant and with tenacity you shouldn't have much issue against CC like his ult.
I'm going to ignore the changes on champs and just get straight to the big point:
The item changes incoming.
WIth all these item changes incoming toplane is going to be in a VERY rough spot in general, but the tank meta will most likely be coming to an end. With multiple item changes, new builds are needed and being experimented on, but there is a silver lining to these item changes:
-Rageblade
Rageblade will be getting turned into a Mythic. It will be getting AD AND AP scaling, but also insanely increase attack speed for every hit and start boosting on-hit after a certain amount. This item will be insanely good on Gwen builds that require more skirmishing over bursting, and I can see this becoming a main mythic
Info Regarding Gwen in S-13
EXLPANATIONS ARE DONE AFTER SEVERAL GAMES TESTED IN PBE
Toplane:
So overall, Gwen still feels pretty decent at least in PBE. I know the main meta builds aren't going to be the same when full release comes around, but it still feels overall nice in terms of usefulness. Tank Gwen feels stronger thanks to Jak'Sho, making her more and more tanky the longer the fight goes.
As for Rod of Ages on AP Gwen, I still feel riftmaker is stronger and better for her, but Rod is a good secondary Mythic if you plan to focus more on having more Health/Mana/AP than true damage. I didn't notice the healing/mana restore effect too much however despite the enemy teams not using grievous so gotta look into that more often than I am now.
Jungle:
Still an Off-Meta pick, but hasn't really moved in placement. Jungling is a bit easier thanks to changes but just doesn't compete with some of the other junglers you'll run into.
The pet that best suits Gwen can actually be all 3 depending on your build. Normal AP benefits best off of taking Scorchclaw first. If you're going Tank, take Mosstomper. If you're going the movement speed build then Gustwalker. Overall though you're probably going to end up taking Scorchclaw or Mosstomper the most since you plan on doing damage or tanking over all else.
Overall:
Gwen feels like her place in the toplane is a bit better despite the tank changes shockingly. Granted tanks like Ornn, Malph, Sion, etc are going to go up in threat due to the new items, but I wont post that till S-13 fully starts.
As for Jungle her placements about the same truthfully, maybe a bit lower but still viable with the right team comp.
Ever since her release, I've had a shakey relationship with Gwen. Over time however, I've come to love playing this champion. She is a hard scaling champ with alot more versatility than she is given credit for.
Over the course of some months I've been experimenting with her to figure out builds that can work with her. After testing, AP obviously is her best build, however, she actually works as heavy AP/Tank Hybrid that can dominate opponents while also tanking the enemy team at the same time.
I'll be going over exactly what Gwen can do and how exactly you can use her to effectively provide her with better overall usefulness in your games in the coming times you're struggling to use her, or possibly even like using her in different ways you normally wouldn't consider when using her in your games.
Gwen is a very versatile champ from what I've experimented in, rather her being a full AP Bruiser who melts your team down in the late game, or being a frontline tank who's tanking the entire team yet still somehow outdamaging the ADC.
She can have a presence that isn't fully capable of doing EVERYTHING, but can heavily influence the game if done right and choosing the right build path. She can easily be the AP bruiser doing full damage to the enemy, or frontlining the enemy team for her team doing damage and also somehow outliving everyone because she's too beefy.
Alot of this may make you say "Really? She's a decent tank?" but trust me it's not weird for a tank to have damage and even if she's meant to be full AP bruiser it doesn't mean she can't off-meta tank as needed and I've tested it to find it useful in situations
-Anti-Tank Scaling: Gwen has amazing scale into the mid-late game, especially if you're building up alot of health. Once she has her first 1-2 items, her damage makes it hard to 1v1 her. Even fighting her with others can be difficult if she's given a chance to get far enough ahead.
-Overall Strong Scaling: Even against a team with little to no tanks, if you're capable of building up the damage Gwens a force. Great frontline and a W to make sure you choose the ranged fights or they come into your zone. Even if you get behind on her, given enough time you can easily start to overtake enemies.
-Adaptable To Situations: Gwen can work in multiple positions. She can be heavily team oriented due to her healing and true damage she gains from her Q and the burst her ult gives along with scaling well even if her last 2-3 items are altered. If you need a splitpusher, guess what? She's the one on your team to do it. Her buff to her E gives you decent cooldown back on your E from hitting something after dashing, so when her E hits level 2-3, you can easily just infinitely loop your E to shred towers and make the enemy realize it was a mistake to think you wouldn't be able to destroy it in time
-Impressively Easy Build Path: Gwens build path for her first 3-4 items is straightfoward, which actually makes her build easy to remember. Not only that, your only super expensive item is Riftmaker, and even then after you get that you get your full build insanely faster than some champs, hence why you scale so well
-Good Frontliner: Gwen overall, rather she's tank or full AP, is a really good frontline capable of making fights go in her favor of 1v1s due to her W making ADCs/Ranged have to get into her zone to fight her properly. Rather it's due to that or using the W for more buffs to her Armor/MR she's a force all around.
The Cons
-Weak Early Game: Level 1, Gwen can actually outrade some champions, but for the most part from level 2-5 she doesn't have the best lane phase. If you play super smart you're able to make it seem like your damage is impressive enough not to fully mess with, but don't fully rely on her E level 1 as due to previous nerfs it isn't its full potential anymore. Play safe, get some pokes in and when your jungler comes or you get them low enough at level 4, then you can try for a kill if you have a good matchup
-Squishy Champion: Honestly even around late game until you're full build, Gwen is super squishy. I have found a build with Sunfire that works well to make her more frontline powerful in terms of tank if NEEDED, but only if your team lacks any frontline period excluding you. Still, she's squishy all around but is a glass cannon to make up for it.
-Bad Blind Pick: With how many champs could counter Gwen if the enemy gets the chance to do it, picking Gwen blind is a heavy risk option. If the enemy doesn't know how Gwen works or her style and picks a tank, it's good for you depending on the tank. Still in the end, she's not the best to pick blind into so choose her first pick at your own risk
Gwen can have several different jobs depending on:
-Your Teams Comp
-What is currently needed
-The Circumstances Of Win Cons
Along with several other options and events, but here's what you'll mainly run into as a Gwen:
Team Fighting Tank Killer
-Obviously because of Gwens kit, you'll always be the Tank Killer in the frontlines trying to help remove the tank from the picture so that it's harder to have them take everything from your team so that they die faster. You kep all the tanks in check as best as possible
Granted, there are times where you can get melted if you're not careful, but this is a situational scenario, however most games if they have any kind of frontline, tanks specifically, it'll be your job to handle them to the best of your ability
Splitpushing Distraction
-Mid-Late game you're not only hard to 1v1 but you're also a decent tower shredding champion that's capable of defending herself as needed. Gwen in the late game especially has little issue fighting on her own unless the enemy team has so much CC even your tenacity has zero effect on the outcome
However, when playing Gwen, you have the best chances of being the splitpusher [Emphasising IF IT DOESN'T SCREW YOUR TEAM in this sentence] in order to give your team a chance to get objectives, cause the enemy to split to choose between you and others, or even the best outcome: Getting a tower while doing the distraction.
The best time to splitpush is when Objectives are down or not possible without a risky team fight that cant be afforded and you know a team fight [though at this point should be unnecessary if no objectives are up or low] is about to break out. Even sometimes your team will tell you to keep pushing while they distract if they can peel for themselves. Overall you just have one of the better splitpushing potentials as you can easily do so AND take down an enemy if they are alone or aren't careful enough.
Frontline Tank
Now this part confuses people, obviously, but here's what I'm going to tell you now: Tank Gwen is not a troll decision
Granted, it is if you're first timing it in a ranked game as it takes a while to adjust to and get down to an extent that you can make it useful in a team. However, when you take the time to learn it, learn when to use it and how effeciently it can be for your team, you'll realize how amazing it can actually end up being
Gwens damage scales heavily and it's meant to do that, actually to the point you can go with just Nashors and Cosmic as your two AP items and you'd still do the most damage.
Now do take note: The tank build should mostly be used if you have no frontlines to tank for your team, no other bruisers, or your only frontline is a support who can't do much once their abilities are down and out.
In the end though this is easily one of the underestimated off-meta choices that can greatly influence a fight if you do it well enough.
Conqueror is Gwens best main keystone without question. The adaptive force this gives from early to late game provides you with nothing but amazing damage scaling and mid-late game healing
Overall, Gwen does use alot of Mana. Having this ensures you can stay in lane longer without having to leave due to mana loss, and late game combined with your healing it will make it hard for you to run out of health or mana easily. Overall, this is to me better than triumph in the long run
Tenacity is good throughout the entire game, providing you stun resistance against CC. If you can't dodge with your W or because the enemy needs to be in your face to use CC, this will make sure it's hard to keep you interrupted so that you can continue to fight longer without the risk of being forever stunned unless focused down by everything
This is overall preference. Last Stand can help you in situations where you're heavily in need of more damage at the last second in case you wanna give a good fight and can't get the enemy lower than you first and in team fights you're bound to get low if you don't have peel to keep you healed or to tank for you. Overall as well, Gwen excells in prolonged fights which this benefits heavily from
Second Wind Overall helps with sustaining your health during the laning phase. Good against both melee and ranged matchups, second wind makes you able to stay in lane longer after trades so you don't risk losing as much CS after trades
Pairs heavily well with tenacity, Unflinching will make you harder to keep CC'ed. Combining Unflinchings low health response to Tenacity plus Last Stands extra low health damage, you'll be harder to keep pinned down in a fight and be able to fight back with more force once the CC barely sticks around
ALTERNATIVE CHOICES Lethal Tempos changes were godsent for champions like Gwen as extended fights are a gwen mains dream as it ramps up over time with each hit fitting her on-hit playstyle.
If you'd prefer a bit more gold gain and health restore over mana restore in-lane you can choose triumph over presence. Keeping your health topped off if you're almost low even with your healing is a good way to make you a harder target to kill off
A good choice and competetor for Last Stand. It will scale off your opponent if they're missing 40% health instead of scaling off your missing health like Last Stand. It's just a definitely good way to execute enemies
I don't use this too often seeing as how one attack can just remove it early, however if you're against heavy combo champions like Yasuo and Akali or get ganked by Talon/Zed, this could be your lifesaver
Revitalize is good for extra healing or if you took tempo over conqueror. Once you get rift, this will help you heal insanely well and will also be useful if you happen to have champions on your team who can heal you like Soraka or Sona
Explaining Rageblade
Yes, I know, the first thought is probably "Rageblade on Gwen? Why exactly?" well there's a couple reasons honestly:
-Firstly, it's great to help her attack speed boost on her E, and provide her a bit of On-Hit power physically plus that attack speed is undeniably good for when your Q is down for its very short time
-Second, It feels good to use on her when you don't wanna go full AP, but you don't know what to replace it with
-Finally, Gwens E autos are considered On-Hit, so not only will it boost her E damage, but it actually also counts a single auto as 2 autos on the third hit. So every third hit, 2 autos will go off despite only using one. Not only that, this effect on her gives her 2 Q charges instead of just 1, so you can auto 3 times, and have 4 stacks already up on her Q good to go and even after finishing the Qs, your autos are insanely faster with Nashors+Rageblade
The main reason your healing works so well. Snip Snip! and Needlework do extra bonus magic damage. Your Thousand Cuts Passive also heals for 70% of post-mitigation damage on champions and deals bonus damage to minions below 40% health Gwen Snips her scissors into a cone between 2-6 times depending on her stacks. In order to gain stacks, she has to auto attack enemies and/or objectives only capable of holding 4 stacks at a time. The edge of the cone for Snip-Snip Deals magic damage, however the center of her ability deals true damage to enemies and applies Thousand Cuts. This will be your main damage source all game excluding your autos due to true damage and how fast you can build it up just by autoing. Gwen creates a circle of defense around her called "The Hallowed Mist" that will last 5 seconds. You can move the circle by going towards the edge or recast the W once to bring the circle to center around you. Inside the circle, Gwen is untargetable and immune to almost all abilities and attacks outside the circle if the enemy is not inside the circle with her. It also grants armor and magic resist while she remains in the circle. Use this ability to get ranged champion poke off of you in fights, or get a bit of resistance against enemies if need be.
Gwen will dash and gain bonus on-hit magic damage +8% AP scaled. She also gains bonus attack speed and 50 bonus attack range for 4 seconds. If she attacks anything in those 4 seconds, her E dash cooldown will be reduced by 60%. Her E is also an auto reset and can be cast during all her abilities. This will be what causes your autos to do a **** ton of damage due to on-hit. As long as you hit something after using the dash, your E will always be up the entire fight.
Needlework has 3 active ult charges. The first fires only 1 needle, the second fires 3 and the third fires 5 needles. In order to activate the next two charges after the first, you must auto attack or use snip-snip on an enemy champion or minion. Every needle hit applies thousand cuts and slows enemies. Make sure you use this to burst enemy champions down fast. You can use it to slow running enemies too, and thanks to some buffs, you don't have to hit anything to charge it anymore.
Combos
[WILL ADD GIFS EVENTUALLY OF COMBOS]
Gwen has a few good combos for in-lane and after leaving the lane as well, though sometimes tricky to pull off, but i'll list a few off-hand that you might be able to find online, discovered, or already have noticed but can't fully figure out
E->Q->Auto Animation Cancel
Pretty good standard poke combo for in-lane as Gwen. It gives a bit more DPS than just the normal E-Q and helps stack Conqueror.
To do it, simply E towards the enemy, Q and while the Q is going off, click the enemy champ. You wont notice the auto go off, but your E will still reset to the CD it's suppose to, because you weaved in an auto that had its animation cancelled out due to the Q animation finishing
Auto->E-Auto-Q-Auto
Pretty basic, not alot of chances to use this against certain champions but a good way to get off a bit of burst and stack Conq up fast. Probably the most simple combo to explain and pull off. Her E acts like an auto reset so you can get an easy auto in, and depending on when you used this, your Q can have 2-4 stacks already filled up for good damage
1st Ult+E->Q->2nd Ult->Auto->3rd Ult
This is a more "Show To Know" combo, but i'll explain it as best as I can till I add the GIF example.
This is probably her most fast paced burst combo. You'll use your first Ult and dash at the same time to get into Q range, Q the enemy [Preferably have 3-4 stacks up before going in for the best damage result], throw out your ults 2nd charge, auto and then finally your ults third charge. The damage is insane on this combo and you may need to practice it, but when you get the speed down, it is INSANE how hard she bursts enemies down
Gwen is a heavily versatile and underestimated champion in league. Everything I've described and shown I've tested myself and given my honest opinion over based off of usefulness of situation, power to her kit and overall how well it can help her scale in the entire game.
If you're looking for a champion that can melt tanks and squishies alike who will always be on the frontline, who also ends up being an AP champion when your team goes full AD while she also uses melee, then Gwen is definitely a good choice.
She is hard to learn properly and harder to master, but hopefully with this guide you can learn like I did on the best ways to use her and how to make sure you get the most out of her kit than before.
