Hello, I am Gaylaxy. I have been an engage support playing for the last 4 years, playing in EUW and now OCE due to a family move. I peaked 450LP Masters in EUW and 752LP Challenger on OCE. I have always loved engage supports and what the role offers in the form of game impact and variety from mages, to enchanters and of course engage.




I was originally a Jungle Sej OTP throughout 2018, but moved away from the role as I got frustrated with the lack of game understanding I had at the time, sitting around gold. Since then, I have improved massively and fallen back in love with Sej as the super assassin, tank and CC bot she is and will be in every single game regardless of game state.

This will be my first Mobafire guide ever, but I've always wanted to create one, but never had the right timing. I will be figuring out slowly how to format it and my goals is to have the #1 sej guide in the world.
Why Sej Support?
Why Sejuani Support?

Sejuani provides the best of what you want from an engage support. Damage, peel, engage and of course, frontline. The damage output from Sejuani generally catches alot of squishy targets off guard and you can 1v1 most ADCs 100-0 throughout the midgame if you find them setting on a sidelane.

Sejuani can synergise with nearly any champion, as any engage support can. Aslong as you respect and understand the complexity of wave states and botlane matchups, this champion can take you from the depths of Iron to the Apex of Challenger. The only ceiling to Sejuani support is your willingness to learn the botlane through and through.

Pros

[+] Offers great sustainable gap close and peel, interrupts most abilities, including flying engages such as Zac or Tristana. This tool alone gives Sej escape, peel and disengage.
[+] Sejuani can build just about anything and be viable. So the options are endless, and you can adapt to any game state.
[+] No one expects Sejuani support, which normally works in your favour during champ select.
[+] Massive roaming potential and mid-game skirmishing due to hitting powerspikes very early on.
[+] Can change a losing game into a winning game with a single engage or peel.
[+] Great off-tank

Cons

[-] Very weak level 1 Sejuani will get bullied really hard unless AD also understands this and plays accordingly
[-] Can be squishy into certain comps, making engage not viable unless with R.
[-] Teammates can tilt during champ select, thinking you're trolling.
[-] Permafrost can be difficult to proc with majority ranged teams.
The Why
Boots

I take these boots in most games, just like Poppy. Your ability to outmaneuver the enemy support is a major factor in winning the early to mid-game. If you can play wave states correctly, these become an invaluable tool.
I only take these if the enemy team is majority AP or has a lot of hybrid carries such as Udyr, Kayle, Varus or Kai'Sa on top of the traditional AP carries. The other condition is how much CC is present, but it's not always a selling point if it is easy to dodge. If the enemy has a double AP botlane, i.e. Karma & Vel'Koz, you will need to rush these boots first item so you can stay on the map without being poked down.
Waste of time, don't bother. You build enough natural armour in your kit to make up for it. Movement speed and tenacity are standalone stats that are difficult to replicate within a build. If they get buffed to what they used to be sure. If the enemy team is FULL AD, obviously take them. Common sense > Mobafire guide.


Summoner Spells

I take this in about 50% of my games. It depends on how much peel I will require. If the enemy team has champions like Rengar, Kha'Zix or Briar that want to dive me or my ADC / other squishy mages, I take this to ensure their survival. This can also be useful in lanes where it is unlikely the enemy ADC will take Cleanse. If you have Ashe as your ADC don't bother, but if it's Tristana the enemy ADC will likely take Barrier.
This is for when we want to FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT and have early anti-healing for burst damage. Great for games where you are taking the aggressive route and looking to create early pressure. Strong against champions like Soraka and Sona, and other engage supports where the true damage can decide early fights and trades.
Biggest Threats
Biggest Counter Picks / Threats

Morgana — Difficult matchup. Her Black Shield can negate key parts of Sejuani’s kit, including Arctic Assault (Q), Glacial Prison (R), and the stun from Permafrost (E) if the shield remains active. Proper timing and coordination are required to avoid having your engage completely nullified.
Brand — Deals extremely high burst damage and can quickly eliminate targets if given the opportunity. Some off-meta tank builds can also make him harder to kill while still outputting significant damage. The matchup can be managed by playing around his abilities. If he misses his Sear, it creates a clear window to pressure or engage.
Vel'Koz — One of the more difficult APC matchups. He deals extremely high damage and can quickly eliminate targets in the mid game if given space. Positioning carefully and timing engages well is important to avoid being burst down.
Taric — Can be very difficult to deal with. If he misses his Dazzle you can look for a trade, but it needs to be quick. Focus on landing your crowd control and keeping him locked down while your AD carries trade damage.
Braum — Braum can completly counter Sejuani if he played correctly, it is hard to lock him down and his door can absorb the radiation of the sun and make your Glacial Prison very hard to land.
Tahm Kench — A rare but difficult matchup for engage supports. Similar to Braum, he can disrupt engages and protect teammates effectively. His Devour can remove your ultimate target during fights, making it difficult to secure a burst or clean engage.
The Decisions
Bread and Butter Rune Page
This is what really give Sejuani the step up during the mid game. Allowing quick autos stacks passive quickly and allows for perma frost to be proced more effectively. There is an argument for Aftershock but I think Hail of Blades outshines it in every respect.

For example here is my usual engage rotation Arctic Assault > Auto Attack > Winter's Wrath > Auto Attack > Permafrost > Auto Attack. This combo alone will deal a massive amount of damage espically if you weave in ult and ensure the enemy is always slowed or stunned.
Extra damage off your CC, this is bread and butter within Sej Kit and aids towards the serious damage output you will have during midgame skirmishes
Great for sweeper wards, I hate as an engage support not having enough, and you gain the stacks quickly through all the fighting you should be doing. Gain vision score like there is no tomorrow.
No brainer rune, more ult CD means more ultimates. This means you get more times to take chances and find the picks, also a bigger damage output and lockdown for pesky champs such as Ekko or Kayle to prevent them playing the game.


Option 1 Secondary
Great at mid-game tankiness spike, makes you really hard to kill out of nowhere and allows you not to build full tank and still be a useful frontliner.
This can be hard to stack during the early game if you are in FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT mode, just keep in mind it is taking away in the background. Grubs does stack it so I always go there to fight and get tankier, great for scaling though.


Option 2 Secondary
Gives more damage to your ultimate, but that main reason to take this is every takedown reduces the CD by 7% which at rank 1 is 7 seconds (not including other things zekes etc..) so you get to be on the map faster over the course of a game this is an extra 2/3 ultimates and turns you get to take or break.
Lets you get to places faster, you will be paired with a jungler for a majority of the game and most fights early of scuttle are just massively easier. NO brainer.

Q Max is the make sense option, it gives you a deceptive amount of mobility and allows you to get out of tough spots as Sejuani. Arctic Assault can go deceptively far over walls. Winter's Wrath max second allows for more slows.

Itemization

This is the item that secretly makes Sej OP. The amount of damage you proc from this is crazy. Not only do you juice your teammates, you can also consistently proc it over and over again with the combo above.
Recently just got buffed on 26.5 to ensure it is effective earlygame as bandlepipes was overperforming, the buff is really strong espically vs any AoE champion such as Brand or Orianna that depend on that AoE damage. Great pickup for cheap.
Bandlepipes engages and supports Shurelya's Battlesong, but also increases the attack speed. If you have champions such as Katarina or Jax that can weave more autos in because you are juicing them with the attack speed, it will overall mean more CC and more damage. Also, MS is the most OP stat in the game espically for mid-game skirmish-based supports. Buy it.
This is my ol' reliable item. If you have a Mr President AD carry or jungler rush this item and put it on them, then follow them around like a more useful yuumi ensuring they dont die. Great stats and keeps you alive, perfectly complements Conditioning in the resolve tree.
Sometimes we gotta pay the anti-healing tax. We are a good holder, as when we go in, we get the frontload of the damage before the follow-up. Sometimes you gotta pay tax.
Compliments Sejuani well, all the stats and MS give you a great stepping stone into the midgame, poor man's Dead Man's Plate.
