How to achieve the Illaoi power fantasy

By Dark312
Power fantasy.
Illaoi is designed as a 1v5 champion. Screw your allies YOU are winning the game. Head into brick wall, by god that wall will break. Your job is to make the game so easy for your team that they cant possibly throw (easier said than done). You do this in 2 ways, removing your opponent from the game, and making everyone elses opponents deal with you. Your champion is secretly weak. The counter is walking away, luckily for us league players are stupid. But regardless, we have to win the game through our brains. Illaoi is extremely difficult to carry on. Win lane lose game is typical. In this guide I will explain how to win lane and use the advantage to win the game. I will first explain the endgame, so we understand what we are working towards, as well as hitting the biggest weakness first, as the early game can be found out just through trial and error. If you are brand new to illaoi or the game in general, skip to the early game section. If you are already decently familiar with her kit and are wanting to climb, read in order written.

Disclaimer: this is not the only way to play illaoi, but it is the most enjoyable, and thats important for your long term health. Its a video game, if you treat it like work you will hate it and if thats happening you dont need a guide anymore.
Endgame
This is the position you never want to be in. Illaoi is not great endgame and is impossible (almost) to carry in. The only way to win at this stage is to out-tempo your opponents. There are 2 objectives that you are allowed to int your tempo for. Elder and Baron. Your team WILL lose the fight because they are idiots, and they will do it right before you have developed a winning gamestate, allowing the enemy to back and all your hard work is wasted. If you do not have tp up, you MUST prep waves WELL before objective, we are talking about a minute (or earlier) before it spawns, you must be in base, already finished with wave management. That means your plan starts 3 minutes before the objective is up. If **** happens and you cant push all the way to their tower and survive with more than a minute left to prep, I'm sorry but you cant do it. These are the only times when the teamfight is more important than you. Even soul is useless compared to waves. You should push the wave opposite to the objective you are going to contest.

(sorta niche case: when both elder and baron are up at the same time, pick baron if you are losing and elder if you are winning. With baron they cant tower dive you and delete your team with elder)

This is often a time you need elixir of wrath, even for 25 minute baron. Most people only buy elixir when full build or game is ending. This is wrong, imo. Elixir is absolutely worth it earlier if you can win the game, not just end. I can buy elixir at 2 items, at 23 minutes, tp to top tower, kill 3 people, break inhib, then take baron. The game is over. Even if we cant end with baron right away, the value gained is well worth it. illaoi is not meant to continue the game forever, if you see a chance to choke the enemy, take it. You're a top laner, not mid, you aren't allowed to be scared, YOU are the main character.
Mid Game
Illaoi has the earliest mid game out of any champion if you play correctly. It starts at first tower. This is when you get to truly play illaoi the entire time instead of in short bursts in lane phase. I take tower by 15 minutes nearly every game, including lost ones, 14 minutes on average, 12 if they lose hard, and 9 if i make them afk level 5. The faster I take tower the faster I get to play.

At tier 2 turret, you must ward krugs if youre blue side, and at the crossroads under gromp if youre red side. This will allow you to move into position where you get in range of 2, preferably 3, or potentially the mythical 4 tentacle spawns. This is honestly the only time its important to ward in lane, but you're welcome to at other times. The reason for this is that if you are caught off guard, the minions will stop your e angles, and you must maneauver in potentially losing ways in order to get the best value out of the fight, this is in addition to having fewer tentacles in your range on average. While at tier 2 turret, you shalt not ulti! Unless you will kill the lone defender long before help arrives, you are saving it for the 1v3. You can 1v1 with e alone, sometimes 1v2 if they cant burst you, but if they are coming for you and you dont have ult, you are an inter. Without ult you should back, no worries, your ult will be up by the time you return. And beleive me thats right where we are going.

Screw your team and screw objectives, we are on our way to their nexus. The enemy team should understand that, your team wont, but at least you're doing your job.... Objectives are now free, you win the 1v1, you win the 1v2, they need minimum 3 team members to stop you. Your goal is either back (if you are a little girl, or trying to hit a rank milestone) or take 2 of them down with you. 1 kill is a win still, but you dont get the quick release dopamine burst from that.

The next part of the plan depends on the opponents gameplay. Are they hard contesting you? or are they giving you free reign to abuse top lane. If they are giving, take. Do not stop until inhib, if they ignore you even further take nexus turrets. That will scare them. If they ignore you long enough you have a threat of elixir of wrath, into tp, into end. You WILL end the game if they ignore you. Now if they are contesting your push, your brain needs to turn on. You are now playing around objectives without even being there. You will push the opposite side of the map to the objective that your team will take. At this point, your levels are getting higher, maybe youre getting a bounty, so deaths are more impactful. It is no longer worth it to trade 1 for 1. If you are strong enough to win 1v3 guaranteed, and sometimes you are, then stay, otherwise proc your grasp on the tower and walk away to base. You cant really steal jungle camps well, so don't waste your time.

Lane is pushed, your team secured the objective (or died with a numbers advantage...) now your brain turns on again. No objectives? wrong. Walk down mid, take those towers. You can afford to spend a bit of time here, poke and prod and see if the enemies will int and give you tower. If its not gonna work, go back to a lane. If enemy has been pushing your wave back, base and match them, the timer is about perfect if you spend just a little bit of time contesting mid. Your scoreboard is not that important. If youre 8-8, hell even 8-12, as long as youre playing the map well youre winning. Go back and forth taking as much as you can in side until you are strong enough to win by yourself.
Levels 1-3
This is an integral part of the character. You win the game in the first 3 minutes. The keys here are runes, when you play around your runes and tentacles you are one of the strongest level 1 characters. (not THE strongest, careful).

Step 1:
Keep your grasp up by autoing the wave, abuse w auto reset, and proc grasp every w. grasp cooldown is 4 seconds, guess what your w cooldown is? thats right they are perfect for each other. If they are contesting the lane, auto before w to ensure maximum dps. Use every tool available to you. Regarding tentacles: they are easy to dodge without slows and other things going on to trip them up. Therefore, when we auto -> w, we will be walking back directly towards the tentacle base. If they try to trade back, they will be hit by the tentacle and you heal. Many champs that you dont beat without tentacles you can beat with them. Even darius loses to you level 1 if you properly auto reset and he doesnt dodge tentacles (back off at 3 hemmorhage stacks, then you win round 2). Most champs have long cooldowns on their abilities level 1, abuse that, play around cooldowns. Your flash w happens quickly, make sure you activate it before you flash. If you get in range and w, they take the damage, even if they flash away before you hit. Therefore, the highest chance play is to right click them to chase, activate w, then flash. The w damage is then guaranteed and happens automatically, no reaction time skill check required If level 2 happens during the fight, you should take e, unless you have kill pressure in a single q or w+q combo, then take q. If you kill them level 1, grab q level 2 and crash the wave. it should happen before they can tp with your tentacles and q.

Step 2:
Tp back to lane aggressively if your wave is pushed. You should tp to one of your tentacles near his tower, dont tp to tower.
This is the time when you have dominated the lane. With 2 tentacles, constantly harass him with your e while he is trying to last hit. Often you can w on his wave under tower and your tentacles will cs for you. Careful as the tentacle slam can draw aggro if it hits him. Now is your time to ward, if youre going to. Otherwise you are about to get ganked. Embrace it. Opponent is low from your poke, you have 2 or 3 tentacles set up, try not to miss your e. If you warded you have a little bit of advance warning not to waste your e right before the gank, but you lose a few seconds of dominance and allow a little bit of free farm. IDGAF I'm winning the 1v2 anyways.

Tips to hit E:

1. wait for them to last hit a minion. Especially effective with cannon, theyre less likely to bait.
2. w in first making you so close they cant dodge.
3. stand in his minions so they cant block your e, and you can leave in any direction
4. Hidden tech, courtesy of DirtyMobs, ctrl 3 animation looks a lot like e animation. Bait it out before throwing it. Technically can also try to make them miss a minion with it, but its biggest use is into champs that can block your e, thats fiora, gwen, wukong, neeko, heimer. Or champs that can dodge with a dash, like poppy, jax, renek, trynd, irelia, vayne, etc.

Step 5. Now you are unkillable. Stand outside his tower and do not let him farm. jungler cant kill you (besides graves, evelyn post 6, ekko, and maybe elise or gwen), supp and jungler together cant kill you (most of the time). You will push top until their nexus if they let you. Do not release pressure until you have an opportunity to choke them to death.

This is my gold/cs advantage over 115 games in the highest Elo ive ever been
Level 5+
Here is a video example of the pressure you should be applying at their tower. Ksante is 45 cs at 9:45, i am at 80 cs. 0-0 win.
