Why Kayn top
Kayn is a really fun champion to play, it's funny to see your opponents that were strong dwelling after you get form, Kayn is super strong late game and can carry 1v9 if you play it correctly, although he's weak from 3-6, you can still kill most champions level 1-2 just because of the lot of damage you get from your Q level 1.
I recommend forming into darkin even into ranged matchups, just because it's that better than blue Kayn, the CC and lifesteal you get outweights the movespeed and range from blue.

Smite on top lane?
Smite on top lane is usable when you know you can't kill your opponent, you can use it to quickly advance siege waves when you opponent bases and crash the wave easily. You can also sit in the enemy's red, steal it and get away with your E, that pisses them off badly and sets their level 4 back quite a bit, useful to help your jungle get scuttle and maybe even kill them.
Doesn't it take away my XP?
It only takes your XP if you buy the jungle pet, even if you undo, it will still cap your xp and gold. However, after 21 minutes or when baron spawns, the jungle pet stops lowering the amount of xp and gold you get from waves, so, essentially, you can buy the pet after 21, farm jungle and waves, get double xp and have 2 smites for objectives, you will also get the really strong pet effects and get level 18 before anyone, so it pays off in the end game, that's why you could use it in the harder matchups.
Any pet is good, depends on what you need most.
If you're going to get smite, pick it just before the game starts so people don't dodge.
