Introduction

Welcome to my newest guide, this time about (according to me) one of the best mages in the game.
The coolest thing about Ryze is that his abilities scale with mana, instead of Ability Power. That is why I won't call him an AP Carry, because you get mana to make him strong.

I hope you have fun reading my guide about the great mage Ryze

Pros / Cons

Pros

- Strong late game
- He will never go out of mana unless you spam your abilities too much early game
- He isn't hard to learn
- He is blue
- He is cheap
- Mana items like Frozen Heart and Banshee's Veil also provide defensive stats, so Ryze can build very tanky.

Cons

- Weak early game
- Needs a good farm to level up as soon as possible
- Scales poorly with ability power

Runes

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration: Just. Plain. Magic. Penentration.
Greater Seal of Armor: More armor early game, so ganks will be less successful.
Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist: More magic resistance late-game, because AP Carries are a lot better late-game.
greater quintessence of knowledge: These runes provide a lot of late-game mana, so you can deal even more damage.

Items

Start out with a Sapphire Crystal and two Health Potions. Try to get a Tear of the Goddess as soon as possible, because it will give you a huge mana boost. Now get some plain Boots, and a Hextech Revolver, for the spell vamp. Now get your Sorcerer's Shoes, because you really need that movement speed and magic penentration.

Now we need to deal even more damage, so we're getting a Glacial Shroud, and a catalyst the protector. This will give you a lot of mana, armor and health.
We have already got some armor, so we need some magic resistance. So let's get a Banshee's Veil, for magic resistance and a passive that will make your opponent mid laner hate you.

Now get another Glacial Shroud, because it gives a huuuuuuuuugggeeeee mana boost and armor. Now we need to build both our Glacial Shrouds into Frozen Hearts. Now you have a lot of armor, so you will probably own most AD carries. We have to do something with our Tear of the Goddess, so just build it into an Archangel's Staff, even though Ryze scales poorly with AP, it will still give you some damage, because of the huge mana pool you have got.

Now you can build your Hextech Revolver into a Will of the Ancients, or you can get another Frozen Heart, even though the UNIQUE passive doesn't stack, the mana and armor it provides is just plain great.

Other viable choices

Even though you scale poorly with Ability Power, the magic resistance and its aura are really useful. Get this if you don't need two Frozen Hearts or don't want the Will of the Ancients

/ need some extra mana regen or magic resistance? Take this item. The Athene's Unholy Grail also provides cooldown reduction and some ability power. Take this instead of one of the two Frozen Hearts or the Will of the Ancients

Skills

Your bread and butter spell. It has a really short cooldown, especially with its passive. It also has the biggest mana ratio, so max this first to maximize your damage.

A snare that deals lots of damage? Why not max it second? The only problem with this spell is that it has a pretty long cooldown. But after you get your Glacial Shroud, and maxing Overload, this cooldown isn't that long anymore.

This spell is actually only used for farming and to make the cooldown of your other spells even shorter. But, if you have a lot of mana it will still do lots of damage if it keeps bouncing between you and the enemy.

This spell is great for damage output, chasing or healing. It also has a fairly short cooldown so don't be afraid of using it. The cooldown will eventually be less than 40 seconds.

Summoner Spells

This summoner spell is one of the best ones. It is great for escaping and chasing. And late game you are so tanky that Heal isn't necessary for Ryze.

This summoner spell is great together with your Desperate Power for when that movement speed just isn't high enough. Also great for initiating and/or escaping.
