Her Damage is very high and being hit by her root can lead to a quick death. Her Plants can block your hooks so take care of those before engaging into a fight.
Sivir
Her Spellshield can deny your entire engage and her poke is very high. Try to engage while it's down or bait it out.
Morgana
Another Blackshield that can deny your engages. Good Morgana players will usually run into you so they can get a free root onto you, so beware of that and take distance.
Xayah
Very safe ADC currently. The nerfs weakened her a little but she can still deny engages with her ult.
Nami
If you can get a hook on her, she is pretty much dead. Try to avoid trading with her as her healing outsustains you.
Janna
Her movement speed can be annoying, but once you get a hook on her she is pretty much dead.
Ezreal
Ezreal right now is very weak due to the Kleptomancy changes. He still has high mobility and is unlikely to be hit by a lot of hooks, so don't underestimate him and try to avoid taking unnecessary damage.
Pyke
This is a skill matchup where Pyke has some advantages. He can get out of your CC very easily, but if you get hit by his combo there isn't much you can do. Try to Flay him when he gets close to land a hook.
Jhin
Jhin is a champion with very high damage early on and decent range. He will mostly stand behind minions and try to hit his fourth shot, so avoid being near him and try to engage after his reload, as his movement speed runs out.
Miss Fortune
Miss Fortune is one of the strongest ADCS currently and should not be underestimated. She lacks mobility and can easily be canceled out of her ultimate, but if she has a high CC Support such as Leona, you should avoid fighting her and always look to engage with your flash.
Nautilus
Another skill matchup. Nautilus roots himself in his hooks and attacks, so look for a hook when he does so. Always avoid being hooked as he has a lot more damage than you.
Brand
Very annoying matchup. He will always run away and keep poking you. If you hook him, he gets a free stun and ultimate off you. Always ask your jungler for ganks and avoid standing together.
Alistar
While he can't really die to your hooks, his ADC can. With good timing you can Flay him out of his combo, other than that he isn't really much of a threat.
Lux
Another annoying poke support that will stand behind minions. Due to your tankiness, she shouldn't be doing a lot of damage though. Try to stay in bushes and dodge her attacks. If you can get a hook on her, she is pretty much dead
Lucian
Very mobile champion that will very likely dodge your hooks if you can't predict where he will go. Try to wait for his dash to be on cooldown before you go in.
Karma
High movement speed and annoying CC. Karma is a poke champion that can easily get out of fights and sustain them, so try to avoid fights without your jungler or look for hooks on her teammates.
Ashe
Her slows can be annoying, but she doesn't really have any self peel. If you can get a hook on her shes pretty much dead.
Caitlyn
Very high range and burst. Playing against Caitlyn is very painful and boring. She will likely use her E when you try to hook her, so keep that in mind and try to predict.
Senna
Very broken champion right now. She has high sustain and range. Try to avoid trades and look for all ins, as she can easily heal your damage back.
Twitch
He has no damage early on and lacks mobility. Always look for fights as you will most likely outtrade him. Look out for late game and try to hook when you expect him to appear and ult.
Kog'Maw
Very weak champion that can't really do anything to you. Hooking him leads to a free kill most of the time.
Vayne
Mobile champion that will likely dodge your hooks and then follow up with her own high damage. If you can't predict where she will dash, try to stay in bushes and hook her from there. Try to not stand directy in front of a wall though.
Tristana
You can deny her jump with her Flay, Tristana has very high damage though and should not be understimated. Try to always check your position and be prepared for her engages.
Heimerdinger
Not played a lot but very strong. His turrets can deal a lot of damage and block your hooks. He also has decent mobility near them, so try to take his turrets down before you engage and don't get baited by him.
Yasuo
Strong ADC together with a good engage Support. Try to Flay him when he's looking to go in. You can try and bait his Windwall but don't underestimate his damage.
Jinx
Jinx is pretty weak right now and she can't really do anything to you as long as you avoid her poke.
Draven
He has very high movement speed to dodge your hooks. If you're too close, he can easily punish you for it with his high damage.
Kai'Sa
Strong ADC, but she can't really do anything to you. Avoid trades and care for her ultimate in fights as she can use it to dodge your hooks.
Varus
Pretty weak champion, don't get baited by his ultimate though as it can lead to a very fast death. Other than that he is very immobile and can easily be shut down with a hook.
Xerath
High range poke support. He is untouchable if positioned well and can burst you quickly. Try to avoid his stuns and look to bait his abilities as he is very mana hungry. Look for engages when he overextends.
Vel'Koz
High range poke support with insane burst. Vel'Koz is pretty much untouchable and can punish you for your positioning at any time. The matchup depends on your ADC, if you have a good engage ADC like Tristana, the lane should be pretty easy. Always ask for ganks though.
Braum
Braum is pretty weak and as long as you don't get hit by his passive he can't really do anything. Don't get baited by him though as he is very tanky and will likely not take a lot of damage from your CC.
Fiddlesticks
Very strong and annoying champion. His point and click CC into unavoidable poke will make laning very boring. Standing near walls may lead to a fast death, as he could ult over and start a fight, so avoid that.
Yuumi
Yuumi is weak against good engage supports. This matchup depends on her ADC.
Lulu
She has decent damage, sustain and CC. Don't underestimate her damage and always take distance to not get hit by her E.
Bard
He is very squishy, so hooking him will likely lead to a kill. Try to avoid getting hit by his ultimate, when he's looking for a gank with his jungler.
Shaco
Playing against a shaco can be pretty annoying. Don't get baited by his ultimate and always look to go for his ADC as Shaco will likely get out of your CC. He isn't really a support so his ADC should get annoyed very easily when dying once or twice.
Rakan
Together with a Xayah he can be very strong, as he can block hooks for her and get out very easily. Try to avoid his engages and look to Flay + Hook him when he goes for an ultimate.
Swain
He has decent sustain, damage and CC. As long as you don't get hit by his E, the lane should be pretty easy as he is very immobile and is not really a support.
Leona
This matchup depends on the player. If you are good enough to Flay her engage, she is pretty much useless. Leona is very strong right now, so always care for her engages and wait for her Aftershock to run out before counter-attacking.
Soraka
She has very high sustain and can get a free heal off you when you get close to try and hook. Stay in bushes and avoid her Q's at all cost.
Sona
She isn't really played a lot. Her poke can be annoying but she is very squishy and will very likely die to a hook.
Tahm Kench
Very tanky and can eat his teammate out of your engages. Avoid standing close to him if he has Hail of Blades or is in range of his Tongue Lash. Do not underestimate this matchup, as he has very high CC and burst damage. His shield will also deny your own burst.
Blitzcrank
Pretty easy matchup. He is tanky so try to hook his ADC rather than him. Baiting his hooks can lead to him being out of mana very early into the game.
Senna
Senna has very low mobility and can easily be punished for being out of position. She will also likely move up to collect her souls which can be a good time to engage onto her.
Draven
Draven works very well with good engage supports that have a lot of CC. This is my favorite ADC to play with, as he has a very good follow-up to secure almost every kill.
Jhin
Jhin has high damage and good CC. He can CC into your engages and follow up with his burst. His range allows him to avoid most enemy damage.
Kai'Sa
High damage and good follow up to your engages. If she is far away, she can also follow with her ult or W.
Ashe
Her slows and her ultimate can make hitting hooks very easy for you. Her damage isn't really that high unless she has her Q, but other than that you two have very high CC together.
Varus
Decent burst and CC. He offers a lot of utility. He lacks mobility, so your Lantern can be very useful for him.
Vayne
She has strong damage and mobility. You can land a free hook on an enemy that has been stunned by her.
Miss Fortune
Miss Fortune works very well with High CC engage supports. Her ult into your hook is pretty much a free kill.
Caitlyn
Caitlyn has good damage and can place a trap under a hooked target. Good ADC to play with, as she has a very decent follow up.
Ezreal
Pretty weak lane, especially after the Kleptomancy changes. Ezreal is very weak right now and is rather a poke ADC than a high burst one, which does not favor a lane with Thresh.
Twitch
Pretty OK. His damage is high once he gets his ult. If you can CC a target for him to shoot, he can deal decent damage with his E.
Tristana
Very good lane. Tristana has insane damage and a good engage. You can Lantern her out of bad situations and kill an immobile champion very easily in a good situation.
Xayah
Strong ADC with self peel and good burst. Thresh and Xayah make up a very good lane due to her Atk Speed buffs, which allow her to use a lot of Auto Attacks fast. The nerfs weakened her a little but thats fine.
Sivir
This lane isn't really strong, but Sivir is a safe pick that can deal decent damage into your engages.
Kog'Maw
Very weak ADC currently. High CC champions favor him, as he can land his skillshots very easily into them. Overall pretty bad lane though.
Lucian
One of the strongest lanes. Lucian has very high mobility and burst. He can secure a kill very easily and has good follow up.
Kalista
While this is supposed to be the best lane, Kalista is still pretty weak and isn't seen very often. She has good damage and engage.
Heimerdinger
There isn't really any synergy but Heimerdinger is a fairly strong pick right now. Your Lanterns can help him scale and get out of ganks.
Yasuo
This lane is pretty OK. Yasuo is a strong pick that can do a lot without your help. This lane has very high kill pressure and can deal with most matchups.
Senna
Senna offers decent sustain and CC as a set up for your hook but she lacks damage. This can be a pretty okay lane as you both help eachother as supports.
If either of you struggles hitting their skillshots you can just rely on the other one to follow up.

Hi I'm Dopi, a diamond Thresh, Pyke and Nautilus main. Thresh was the first champion I ever played. I always thought Hook mechanics were the most interesting and Thresh kit seemed very promising. Playing Hook champs has taught me a lot about predictions and movement and I want to teach you how to play Thresh on a decent level as well.
Thank you for clicking on this guide ~Dopi
Who is Thresh?
Thresh is a Support champion with very high CC. He has good engages and a unique ability: the Lantern, which can get any teammate out of a bad situation. This ability is what makes him more interesting than the other Hook champions.
Thresh is a champion that has been seen in a lot of pro play and in normal games overall, as he has a very high pickrate. He offers unlimited skill potential which all depends on the one who plays him, making him the ultimate support.
Builds
The main item of every build will be Gargoyle Stoneplate. This is currently one of the most overused items on tank supports and I will explain why.
Passive: If 3+ enemies are nearby, grants 40 armor and magic resist. When activated, increases health by 40% but reduces damage dealt by 60%. If 3+ enemies are nearby, instead increase health by 100%.
The reason why this is so insanely good is because teamfights happen a lot, especially around drakes and they easily help us use our passive to gain a huge amount of HP. This greatly improves our survivability as any champion and makes us nearly unstoppable in teamfights while also providing a decent amount of armor and magic resist.
Pros and Cons
Pros
+ High CC, engage and peel + Unlimited skill potential + Unique ability + Very fun to play + Good in roaming and has a lot of presence in fights
Thresh is a very strong Support that will always be in meta. His unique variety of abilities allows him for some insane plays that will definitely be remembered by many. He can offer a lot of utility and fits into every team comp. He is also insanely fun to play and you will never get bored of him.
Cons
- Hard to master - Depends on teammates - Abilities can be hard to hit - Lacks mobility
While Thresh has a lot of positive aspects, he also has some downsides. A high skill potential also leads to a very hard to play kit. Most of his damage depends on his teammates and he can be useless very easily, once his Hook is missed.
Abilities
Ability Order:
Q > W > E > R
Abilities
Damnation
Has a chance to drop Souls whenever an enemy dies. Picking up a Soul grants Armor and AP.
Death Sentence [Q]
Thresh throws out a Hook in a direction. If it hits an enemy, they are stunned and slowly pulled towards him.
For a short duration, Thresh has the option to pull himself towards the enemy. The cooldown is reduced if it hits someone.
Dark Passage
[W]:
throws a lantern that grants the first enemy it hits a shield. The lantern can be clicked by a single ally to pull it towards Thresh. The Lantern can also be used to collect souls.
Flay [E]
sweeps his chain in a line, pulling enemies either towards or away from him depending on how he is using it. Enemies hit by it, are also slowed for a short duration.
Passively this also increases damage on his next auto attack depending on how much time there is between each attack.
The box [R]
creates walls around him that deal damage and slow enemies that walk past them. Once an enemy walks through a wall, it is destroyed and the slow duration is halfed.
Runes
Runes explained in detail:
Aftershock: This is the main rune for Thresh as it offers the most survivability. You activate it by hitting an enemy with a hard CC such as your hook or your [E]. When setting up an engage you want to make sure that this rune is ready to use as it will help you to tank most of the enemy abilities with help of the protections it gives.
Font of Life: This rune is very popular and a decent alternative to demolish. The way it works is, that it heals your teammates when they hit an enemy you immobilize. This can help your teammates survive better in teamfights or skirmishes where you will be CCing a lot of enemies. Take this rune when you aren't so sure whether you'll win lane or not.
Demolish: Good rune to help yours and other lanes snowball as it destroys towers very quickly. Take this rune when you want to be more aggressive in lane and are in a matchup that favors you.
Unflinching: This rune is probably one of the most underrated and in the next patch (10.4) it is going to be buffed. It increases your tenacity by a lot and what this will do is reduce the CC duration used on you. This is very helpful when trying to survive since Thresh is already immobile.
Perfect Timing: The stopwatch is one of the most useful items currently as it helps us to get closer to Gargoyles Chestplate which is the main item of our build.
Cosmic Insight: Cooldown Reduction on our summoner spells, abilities and overall max CDR. Very useful rune.
Triumph: Helps us survive in fights and works well with the build as it contains a decent amount of health.
Legend Tenacity: Increases our Tenacity and can be very useful against enemies with a lot of CC. Improves Thresh's survivability.
Ending
Summarized Thresh is a very great champion that is not only fun to play but will also always have a solid position in the meta.
After reading and following this guide you will win almost every game with Thresh so make sure to abuse this untill it is nerfed. Good luck climbing using my Thresh Guide.
