The Suit Hunts in the Manner You Choose

By SeaWeeb
Intro
Hey. I'm SeaWeeb and I love to play ADCs but I'm not always in the mood for botlane. Kai'Sa is very fun to me so I decided to take her top lane and I am learning by the day. This Guide is still a WIP and many things are subject to change with more experience and if you are willing some constructive criticsm. I know this is not really that Viable but I have lots of fun doing it so I would encourage you to try this in a normal game and see how it goes.
Pros and Cons for Top
Pros
  • Strong Wave clear
  • Decent escape
  • Good engage
  • Good burst damage
  • Strong late game
  • Can focus on herself and gets ahead of the pack faster
Cons
  • Very Squishy
  • Reduces overall team sustain due to a lack of tanks
  • Can not duel many bruisers/tanks especially early
Second Skin
Second Skin is your flexibility. It provides bonus magic damage on your basic attacks, stacks plasma which will proc after an enemy has been hit 5 times. Plasma will deal percent missing health damage as bonus magic damage. Once you gain 100 AD, 100 AP, and 100% Attack Speed, you can evolve Icathian Rain, Void Seeker, and SuperCharger respectively.
Icathian Rain
Icathian rain is your lifeline. It is your main source of wave clear and does a lot of damage so you want to take it at level 1 and continue to max it first. To use this ability effectively keep in mind that it has 6 missiles until you increase your AD by 100, in which case it shoots 10 missiles. The missiles will home in on all targets within range. The missiles will hit the same target so try to get the enemy champion the sole target in range once you want to poke.
Void Seeker
Void seeker is more utility than damage. It can hit really hard but its more important to use it to proc your passive since it hits for 2 plasma instead of 1. level it last because you are more concerned on disengaging early in the game. Since your target may have run out of range, use void seeker since it 1. grants vision as it flies 2. marks the enemy giving vision in their surrounding area 3. has extremely long range. If you gain 100 AP in a game void seeker will proc 3 plasma but running AP in this situation hinders your performance.
SuperCharger
SuperCharger is your escape and engage tool. It allows you to escape when the enemy jg is looking for a gank and also provides you with a decent option to chase down someone that's low. It can also be extremely effective in duels as it allows for quick movement so you can dodge skill shots and reposition. When the charge time ends you will get increased attack speed. It is best to level this second as it decreases its cooldown, and increases the movement speed you get from it.
Killer Instinct
Killer Instinct is an instant gap closer that can only be used if you proc plasma on an enemy. It is good to chase targets that are running or it can be used to reposition in some cases with its shield, though it only lasts for 2 seconds. You can use this in duels as a way to outplay and dodge skill shots and it can cause you to win the duel thanks to the brief shield. Just like any other champion level this whenever it becomes available.
Keystones
When you look at top lane all you see are bruiser and tank champions that will not die if you attack them like Poppy, Jax, or Sion. You need to be able to amp your damage in pokes so they don't heal as soon as you stop attacking.
  • Press the Attack
  • Press the Attack is a good choice for some extra damage. It easy for Kai'Sa to proc and increases all damage for the next few seconds.
  • Conqeror
  • Conqueror Is extremely important if you are facing a tanky champion because this rune grants true damage. Because you lack sustain you will need to poke your opposing laner down to reasonable health so if you get all and you have a chance of winning the duel.
  • Grasp of the Undying
  • Grasp of the Undying is very helpful as it allows you to stay in lane a bit longer with the healing (it is not insane since you are ranged but it helps). You are very squishy so when a Poppy charges in you don't want to have to back every single time.
Resolve
If you do decide to take Resolve there are several things to know about why I chose each rune and why you should use them aswell.
  • Demolish
  • Demolish is something that you should only take if you have Grasp of the Undying. While it is very nice to deal extra tower damage, it is more important to have sustain so you can try your best to fill in the void left by taking the role of a tank/bruiser. Kai'Sa does not immobilize champions so Font of Life is useless and while you could take Shield Bash if you really wanted to it is tied to your ult so it won't be very consistent damage.
  • Conqeror
  • Second Wind is crucial when running Kai'Sa top. When in lane, due to your squishyness, not getting hit is the most important thing you can do besides getting CS. When you do eventually get hit you don't want the enemy laner to be able to follow up so being able to heal constantly is important so you won't have to back often. Bone Plating can work but the issue is that you must take multiple hits from the enemy laner for it to proc and be used effectively. Conditioning is not helpful as it will give very minuscule defense as you won't be building any AR/MR.
  • Overgrowth
  • Overgrowth is very helpful because it gives extra max hp. Since you are taking the place of the bruiser/tank extra HP will get you closer to that role and as a result, increase you and your team's sustain in a team fight. Revitalize is not very good because the shield you have is tied to your ult and lasts for 2 seconds. If you want to take Unflinching it is not very good because there is no reason to gap close with flash often and having Teleport and Ignite won't really benefit this rune.
Prep
Before going into a game you must have the mindset that you are the bruiser/tank in the team. You are losing out on team sustain because of this pick. When everyone has locked in assess whether you need to run full AR, MR, both, or none in your offense, and defense runes. Decide whether you need more damage, true damage, or sustain. This is not going to be easy. You will not be able to compete like other top laners but the rewards are worth it.
Starting fresh
If you need to leash it does not take very long due to your passive so you can get back to lane just a bit faster than other champs. In the early game, your number one priority is CS. You will have a very, very hard time poking tanks and bruisers down to low health so maximizing your gold is a must which is why I choose to take Teleport instead of Ignite. Ganks are crucial to getting a kill, but if you play well you will be much better off, especially since top is usually an island. Keep top warded so you can know when a gank is incoming. You CAN NOT 1v2 so you must back to turret if you are about to get ganked. Keep this up and in time you will be able to actually damage the top laner and have success in duels and pokes. Remember, there is nothing wrong with farming under turrent, it is going to happen more than likely and you need to be ready to do so.
Major Items
Trinity Force
This Item is a fantastic choice if you are not going up against someone like Poppy, Ornn, or Sion. It provides basically everything you need and its Sheen passive will help alot with damage.
Black Cleaver
This Item grants armor shred so I usually like to run this item over Trinity Force. While you do not gain any attack speed or mana, you do gain more health and you can do more damage to tanks/bruisers.
Berserker's Greaves
A fairly basic item standard to all ADCs. The extra attack speed is a great bonus to increase your overall dps and kiting, plus it is a large bonus that helps evolve Supercharge.
Runaan's Hurricane
This item will give you bonus attack speed, movement speed, and 25% crit chance. It is very nice to help evolve Supercharge, but the main benifit is that it makes your auto attacks hit multiple targets.
Infinity Edge
This item will complete your Icathian Rain evolution as it provides a massive 80 attack damage 25% extra crit chance and increases critical hit damage. Build this item atleast third because it costs 3,500 gold.
Blade of the Ruined King
This item grants attack speed, damage, and sustain through lifesteal. Its passive is great for toplane as it grants percent max HP damage on hit. Its active slows targets making it harder for them to chase or flee.
Situational items
Mortal Reminder
If they have a tank who is able to heal like Warwick or Nunu then use this item to reduce their sustain from both damage reduction and healing.
Lord Dominik's Regards
If there is a tank that just won't go down no matter how many times you hit them then get this item. It will provide decent damage and a ton of armor penetration.
Maw of Malmortius
It offers good damage, some life steal, and a lot of magic resist both from the stat and its passive.
Guardian Angel
Gives some attack damage and some armor. Its passive will revive you if you get k'oed. Good to use if you really need some armor
Ninja Tabi
If there is an autoattacker like kayle on the loose or an adc that is going toe to toe with you this is not a bad choice.
Mercury's Treads
If you need some extra Magic resist and CC reduction then this is a good choice.
Mid to Win
Once you force your way through lane you can now focus on normal Kai'Sa things but you are still the top laner. If you can, try to spilt push. You have another ADC to take your place in small team fights. Don't be afraid to engage but remember you are still an ADC so you can not face tank a veigar ult, and you are not the main tank in a 5v5. Play smart and don't feed. It is not hard to int as Kai'Sa top and it will cost you a game unless the enemy team feeds someone on your team.
Conclusion
Kai'Sa top is very fun for me. I enjoy Top lane more than all other lanes even if I sometimes have to go into a Kennen as a melee champion. This can work but you must play super safe and not make any major mistakes that will cause your opponent to gain a large lead. You have range and disengage which allows you to harass even mathcup champions and survive against hard matchups.
