Introduction

Thresh is like the Yasuo of botlane. He's usually the support of choice for autofilled players, and he has a very high skill cap. What people know Thresh for most is his hook, and his ability to do flashy plays. Don't even try them. You're a fisher. You sit, and you wait until they make a mistake. This usually comes in the form of an E > Q > R.

General Notes (for those new to support)

Some things that I commonly see people getting wrong in support is a lack of knowledge. People just sort of bumble around and die for stupid reasons. I'd recommend to:

    Always stay near your ADC
    Back when your ADC does. Try not to leave him alone in lane until about 15 minutes
    Ward everywhere you can imagine a gank from. Since you don't need to farm much, keep checking your minimap. I'd recommend checking it once every 5-10 seconds if you're new to this
    Never try to leave a kill - you're not a mother penguin trying to feed her babies. You need gold too


One final bit of cheese. If you're on the Red team, and your jungler starts Red buff, ask your ADC to wait in tribush with you. As long as they're not Alistar/Blitz/Braum/Bard/Morg you should be able to cheese their flashes. This also happens on the Blue team if your jungler starts Blue buff, it's less common, but wait in river bush.

Runes

Guardian is triggered by your W, your FotM, your Locket, and by being near your team mate. The shield is ridiculously OP in a fight if you can get FotM on your squishies. Aftershock is a viable alternative, but I find the extra protection a lot more useful.

Demolish is more useful than Font of Life. FoL should be better in theory, but the heal is so small it is just not worth it.

Conditioning is better overall, but Iron Skin is good against early game comps and AD assassin mids.

Q: Death Sentence

    Best used when they're easy to hit
    Don't try to predict any flashes. If you miss when they flash, then you've still burnt their flash for your Q. If you try to predict a flash and they don't actually flash, you've gained no advantage
    Your hook hitbox is about as wide as the bush, so if you have minions right beside the bush, throw a hook in there if you think they're there.
    Q has two tugs (small pulls), one each second they're hooked. Thresh is slowed during his hook. Don't try to hook them while you're escaping.
    Use your hook more like a Morgana Q than a Blitz Q.

W: Dark Passage

    Don't throw it into enemy champions, throw it just a little bit outside of a skirmish. Enemies can stand on the lantern to block it, so you want to make it so they're not standing on it.
    Use the lantern as a shield during fights.
    Don't use lantern for vision.

E: Flay

    Use the basic attacks last hit the minions for your support item
    Use the basic attacks as poke against short range supports like Braum and Alistar.
    Use the ability to engage close enemies. Flay towards you.
    Against a Leona or Lee Sin, you can cancel their abilities mid air if timed correctly.

R: The Box

    The box has the same range as the second tug of your Q
    Use the ult to force the enemy into a bad position in a fight
    The box can also be used as an effective way of preventing the support from helping. If their support is standing away from their ADC, you can hook onto the ADC with Q, and then go to them and ulting. This means the ADC is trapped without any help from the support (without taking a lot of damage and a 99% slow)
    If they engage into your minions, this is an effective way of forcing them to take minion damage
