Champion Build Guide

(UPDATED) Cho Gath High Elo Guide By Rank 1 Cho World!

By TTVXiralid
About me
Hello! I am Xiralid a former Challenger tier LoL player who mains Cho'Gath.
My intention here on Mobafire is to make informative guides for less experienced players who wants to learn from a more experienced player such as myself.

I started playing LoL around October in Season 7 and reached Silver 5 when I completed my ranked placements.
As a new LoL and MOBA player i wanted to play a cool looking champion so i was scrolling through the collection tab and as soon as i saw Cho'Gath i didn't hesitate to buy him since he was looking like an absolute beast:).

I played him alot and didnt wanna play anyone else.
Of course once i reached Gold i started to play other champs like Yorick,Karthus,Kayn,Azir and Kled but Cho'Gath was my very comfy pocket pick.

Well here we are 2 and a half years later (as of original publish date ) and i went from Silver 5 hardstuck to Challenger by playing Cho'Gath 80%+ of the time and even writing this massive guide to pass my knowledge onto you!

NOTE The information in this guide is 100% from me and nobody elses

How to play Full Tank ChoGath

As Tank Cho (Armor OR Magic resist) you want to be able to cc the enemy as much as possible by making their most valuable carries useless in your presence.

Before season 11 i thought it wasn't worth maxing Q due to E being buffed a few times during s9 and s10 but unfortunately in this season you are unlikely to trade successfully vs bruisers due to all the item changes to bruisers in s11 which is why it is necessary to put a few points or even max Q to farm from a distance.
This will be most efficient in ranks lower than Diamond since players there lack wave management skills so the laning phase will just be you last hitting with Q when vs aggressive bruisers like Irelia, Fiora or Darius.
Patch 10.9 ChoGaths E was buffed with the damage increasing to this per level.
22 / 37 / 52 / 67 / 82 from 22 / 34 / 46 / 58 / 70
Patch 11.3 his E was nerfed/reversed to his power state in 10.9 which in my opinion does not make cho a relevant pick in s11 compared to s10 due to Divine Sunderer,Kraken Slayer and immortal Shieldbow being very popular mythic picks. Divine will just be a pain to deal with in the scaling game since whoever possess that item will for sure win a 1v1 vs you with ease.
Kraken slayer deals true damage every 3rd aa (basically vaynes W copy paste) which is self explanatory why hogarth struggles vs it and if its a vayne that has that item then pray shes a bad player and does not auto attack you in teamfights. Shieldbow will screw you over as Cho when you try to R the target to finish it of since instead you will be greeted with a “no u” shield who tanks ur ult and then u have no damage to finish the guy of which puts u in a awkward state.
ChoGaths E stats 10.9 - 11.3
22 / 34 / 46 / 58 / 70 from 22 / 37 / 52 / 67 / 82
22 / 37 / 52 / 67 / 82 from 22 / 34 / 46 / 58 / 70

The 10.9 buff was a necessary buff and it was even more essential to have once season 11 came around the corner but since the new Sunfire Cape was extremely strong riot thought it was a good idea to nerf the tanks themselves instead of the item that allowed them to be so strong which in the end backfired on their winrates when Sunfire also was nerfed and the tanks were not compensated for it.
ChoGath is going to receive a buff in patch 11.19 which is a 1 second cooldown reduction on his Q ability.

According to u.gg Cho'Gath winrate is only above 50% in Iron with almost 1700 games, Gold with
35 916 games, Master with 222 games.
Cho'Gath has 42.31% wr in Challenger on 104 games which is just straight up horrible compared to bruisers such as Fiora whos sitting comfortably on 50.65% wr (1305 games) and
Darius with 51.12% wr (534 games)

As Hybdrid Cho'Gath your goal is to be able to poke your laner to around 600-700 hp and then going all in on him to secure the kill and increase your damage and tankynies.
This is probably the best choice for new Cho'Gath players since with this build you are hard to kill and deal alot of damage.

Full Ap ChoGath Build (Electrocute)

This build should only be played by ChoGath players who can hit an entire combo without making a mistake/missing Q as this build is far more rewarding than any other BUT also very punishing if you fail to successfully 1v1 your lane oponent and give him a lead.

If u get a lead then dont hesitate to uppgrade your dark seal to Mejai's Soulstealer for extra 1 shot potential in the early-mid game when you are not full build and can sell it for another ap item if you die and loose all your stacks.
Rune Explanations
(NEW!) Bruiser shredder Cho'Gath

This build is VERY good against top lane Bruisers like Darius,Irelia,Illaoi and any champ that wants to fight you very often in melee range.
The backstory of this build is that Hail of blades Cho was requested for me to do from my Twitch chat when i was against Darius which many consider to be one of Chos biggest counters as of season 9.

Turns out i managed to win my lane very easily with hail of blades vs Darius so i decided to test different rune combinations with Hail of blades on Cho and this is the final result which i am very pleased with and so excited to share with the rest of you!

Anyway so now i will explain how the runes benefit Cho.

This rune works good against top lane Bruisers like Darius,Irelia,Illaoi and any champ that wants to fight you very often in melee range in season and it still holds up to this day even though i would recommend being mindful when using it as snowballing in my opinion is easier for bruisers to do in this season if you should somehow greed and die.

Hail Of Blades since you max E in this build you are making your E cooldown VERY low with HIGH damage. you can often start a fight with your enemy by acting like you overextended or made a mistake which they surely will react on and want to try to get a chunk of ur health bar but thats when you press E and use your 3 hail of blades attacks combined with your E ability so shred his/her health bar and once you have used 2 of your hail of blades attacks you want to use your Q the very second you use your 3rd auto attack as they will get slowed by your E and make it easier for you to position your Q on them and hit it since they cant get away from you fast enough.

The best combo for this is if you first do a normal auto attack which will trigger your hail of blades and then you press E and then use all 3 of your hail of blades attacks with your auto attack empowered from ur E and then use your Q while the enemy is slowed which will allow you to get away and wait for the hail of blades cooldown. This gives you an extreme amount of fast damage that bruisers cannot handle early game and if they don't recall or get help from their jungler you will win the next fight assuming you are lvl 6 and have bramble vest. This tactic is very useful even if you are not lvl 6 since you can just use your corrupting potions and your passive to get your health back and this sustain the enemy does not possess.

Cheap shot because of the extra damage you get with your Q when you hit it and since the cooldown of Cheap shot is only 4 seconds you will always get the bonus damage from this rune and since Cho doesn't have dash or doesn't need any more sustain there's no point to take Sudden impact or Taste of blood in Cheap shots place.

Eyeball collection since you can scale with ap for each takedown and if you get a lead then this rune will help you snowball unlike Zombie ward and Ghost poro which requires you to leave your lane to ward or destroy wards which i dont think alot of people in lower ranks do anyway.

Relentless hunter because Cho is immobile and needs the extra ms and will help a lot when running away from champs with high movement speed or/and lots of dashes.
If you dont like movement speed then fine just take Ravenous hunter or Ultimate hunter.
They are both great runes but i would stray from Ravenous hunter when playing tank Cho since its not as easy to 1 shot an entire wave with your Q with no ap items so in my opinion if you dont want to go Relentless hunter then use Ultimate hunter and use your Ultimate right when you get it back from cooldown to increase your early-mid game tankiness by a few hundred hp more than if you wouldn't have had it.

Biscuit Delivery
Well it gives you a decent amount of mana and some hp when you really need it and combined with corrupting potion your sustain on Cho is just disgustingly unacceptable and your laner will be crying for ganks.

Time warp tonic
The corrupting potion will be very useful in lane when you trade as you can instantly restore a lot of hp with your Corrupting potion and it grants a small amount of burn damage on the target champion when you attack it
. This rune is very important as it will decide many fights and trades you do in lane and will continue to do so until you need to sell it for an item.
It also grants you a small amount of movement speed which is great since Cho lacks mobility and I usually find myself catching up to people running away from me with the Corrupting potion movement speed.

You should play passively and only look to fight/trade vs the enemy when you have ur hob up and try to be as quick as possible in the fights since bruisers tend to win the longer fights against tanks.
If you have the rune page “Sustain ChoGath” then you should try to proc your grasp of the undying alot. Mainly for damage and sustaining purposes but since grasp gives u 5+ max health for every procc u do its a great investment when you are scaling as Cho

Sustain ChoGath

This is a rune page that works really well as it provides Scaling and very good sustain early-mid game.

Try to proc your Grasp as many times as you can, this applies to all builds that have Grasp but in this one you can't be punished hard enough if you decide to walk up for a quick auto attack as you have Corrupting potion which will help you get a lot of your hp back with time warp tonic in the laning phase

Demolish since you can scale with hp and deal a very big chunk of damage to towers later on

Conditioning because it makes you more tanky for each armor or/and mr item you buy before 12 min. You can also use second wind if you are against a ranged top laner such as Gnar,Vayne,Quinn or Kennen

Overgrowth because your Grasp rune ,E and R abilities scale with HP.

INSPIRATION

Biscuit delivery Grants free sustain early game and can be of use if you run out of corrupting potions.

Time Warp Tonic It gives you a very nice chunk on instant heal from when you activate "Corrupting potion" and then you have increased MS which is something ChoGath lacks and will also help you get away or get to your laner

Runes Against Full Ad

With these runes you want to be focusing on getting as much armor as possible to maximize the bonus armor you will get at the 12th min from the conditioning rune (if you choose that rune instead of bone plating)

Use your E to proc your Grasp (Grasp Of The Undying) since your E gives you increased attack range for 3 aa (auto attacks). Why not just use aftershock ? Because Grasp deals overall more damage and more frequently aswell and heals you when you proc it on the enemy AND it also increases your hp by 5 for each time you proc it so by procing it as many times as possible will increase your R and E damage since they both have scalings with your max hp.

Demolish to 1 shot Towers when pushing with your team

Bone plating to be able to trade (fight) even better in lane EARLY GAME ( that being said if you are 100% sure you dont need bone plating to survive early game then go for the rune "Conditioning") Bone plating will also make you receive less damage when you for example wanna go up to their face and proc your grasp :D

Overgrowth because your R and E scales with max hp which overgrowth gives you!

Precision

Coup De Grace You deal even more damage to low hp enemies which will help you get closer to the R execution mark
Legend: Tenacity Makes sure nobody can perma cc you long enough to keep their carries safe from you.

Runes Against Full Ap

Same applies here, stack mr for your bonus mr at the 12th min from Conditioning if you use that rune.

Use your E to proc your Grasp (Grasp Of The Undying) since your E gives you increased attack range for 3 aa (auto attacks). Why dont just use aftershock ? Becuase Grasp deals damage and heals you when you proc it on the enemy AND it also increases your hp by 5 for each time you proc it so by procing it as many times as possible will increase your R and E damage since they both have scalings with your max hp.

Coup De Grace You deal even more damage to low hp enemies which will help you get closer to the R execution mark

Full Ap ChoGath Runes(Electrocute)

This build should only be played by Cho'Gath players who can hit an entire combo without making a mistake/missing Q as this build is far more rewarding than any other BUT also very punishing if you give your lane opponent a lead or miss alot of your Qs since i find that alot of mana items Cho used in Season 10 have now been reworked and does not have mana in their stats so you really have to be mindful of your mana.

If u get a lead then don't hesitate to upgrade your dark seal to Mejai's Soulstealer for extra 1 shot potential in the early-mid game when you are not full build and can sell it for another ap item if you die and loose all your stacks later on in the game.

Electrocute because you can easily outtrade your opponent very fast and kill them thanks to the burst with this keystone.
The combo is aa into 1E auto attack into Q (these 3 will proc the electrocute) into 2E Auto Into W Into Last E auto attack. After this combo you can pretty much ignite and ult or only do 1 of them and that should be a easy kill.
If you want the easy combo then it's Q into W and then 1 E auto attack and u could probably still kill your laner but I find the first mentioned combo more safe to use since it deals more damage overall.

Cheap Shot because it deals True damage when u cc someone with Q so you can proc this
Eyeball Collection because you get even stronger with ap when you kill someone with this rune.

Relentless Hunter because Cho lacks mobility which you need in this meta (and since s9) so this will compensate and also allow you to later on in the game sell your boots for an item if your game is 40+ minutes since you will still have movement speed from the rune.

Absolute Focus to be able to deal as much damage as possible but transcendence is fine to exchange for Absolute Focus aswell if you'd like.

Gathering Storm due to the huge ap scaling which will help you to 1 shot people later on in the game.

Hybrid ChoGath Build
Arcane Comet to poke safely while still doing damage
Manaflow Band If you hit a Q it costs 45 instead of 60 since you get 25 mana per spell you hit.
Transcendence 10% CDR
Gathering Storm to scale and have damage

Demolish to 1 shot towers later with your team when sieging and for geting plates easier early game

Overgrowth gives you HP that scales with your R,E and demolish.

Full Ap Chogath (1 Shot Poke)

This build is my favorite since it allows you to easily poke and trade with your oponent and even if you manage to get low on hp you have ur passive so u will heal right back up and then can continue poking since u have alot of mana when u have rod of ages and decent ammount before that with manaflow band.

Absolute focus and gathering storm allows you to scale really good, you could pick scorch but it doesnt allow you to 1 shot just as fast later on in the game only early, but it still works late game.

Cheap shot and eyeball colection cuz u get kills easier and easier for each kill u get allowing you to 1 shot anyone even if you get a small lead.

Gameplay and Combos
Cho'Gaths gameplay should be adapted to what the laner ur against. For example if ur against a melee champ you max E and if ur against a ranged champ max Q since you probably wont be able to walk up to them and use ur E alot.

A combo every Cho'Gath player should know is Q,aa,E and W

Hitting someone with Q allows you to punish them since they cant do anything while knocked up so if you auto attack and then imideatly after use your E to auto attack again you will maximize the damage output and also apply another slow making them forced to flash BUT after you have used your E thats when you want to use your W which silences them and makes sure they cant use any summoner spells or abilitys (except for Tryndamere and Olaf R)

A combo to 1 shot when playing Ap ChoGath in lane when you have hextech revolver is Q,aa,E,W,R (ignite aswell :) )

Combos later on in the game is simply Q,W,E,R since your ap will be so high your Q will deal atleast 1/3-1/2 of their hp and then using your W and E will get your target(s) low enough for you to R or let ur teammates clean up the kills.

If you want to see a game with my ChoGath in action vs the Rank 1 playing adc and rank 4 playing jg both in the enemy team then here is the 25 min game :)

FAQ
Why not use "Ultimate hunter" ?

Well the ultimate hunter is on the domination tree and that tree is more rewarding when u need damage which Cho tank shouldnt have. If ur going cho tank ur supposed to be a huge menacing unstopable monster that can barely be cced even tho the enemy is spamming cc on you and thats why u need the precision tree as secondary with legend tenacity
and besides even if i went ap cho and had the domination tree i wouldnt take ultimate hunter as it needs it only rewarding when u kill evereyone in the enemy team once so u can get the stacks which in laning phase will be completely useless so thats why Ravenous Hunter is a way better option since ur passive heals and the ravenous hunter also heals with % of the dmaage u do with abilitys so when u spam spells on minion waves with ap cho u get basicly 3/4 of health bar back if ur low around 200 hp (yes im serious) when u have 1 item
and if theres another rune i would use for domination tree than ravenous hunter its Relentless hunter as Cho is immobile and thoose stacks will help him out to easier reach your target (out of combat) and rotate to places faster on the map. Also very fast when ur chaisng someone thats just running and not bothering to attack u to cancell the relentless hunter ms but even if someone does that u have protobelt to dash and instantly Q to make as much impact of the protobelt dash as possible
