Introduction

Hello, my name in League of Legends is 'MushlingTimes'. Currently I am a gold 2 player that mainly plays Mid and Adc. I have around 200 Normal games put into Katarina, and a total of 200+ ranked games with her (On various different accounts and smurfs.). Last Season I had a 3.7 KDA with her and this Season I have a 3.5 KDA with her. I highly suggest that you read everything included in the guide.

Katarina excels at skirmishes and cleaning up after her teammates. Her passive, Voracity helps her engage back into teamfights after getting an assist, or escape after bursting down a target. Katarina is a really, REALLY, easy champion to learn, she has no skill shots to learn at all. Except she is probably the hardest champion in the game to master, as a mid lane assassin that doesn't possess the burst that most assassins have, she cannot simply put out enough damage to one shot an enemy and run out in most scenarios. Simply put, you have to assist your teammates with Bouncing Blades from a distance and choose when to engage both decisively and intelligently. Having high knowledge on other champions is incredibly important on Katarina. All bad things aside, skilled Katarina's can solo carry ranked and normal games with ease, and snow ball extremely well off kills.

Champion Details

sinister steel

Katarina, the Sinister Blade is an Assassin/Mage hybrid. She is one of the few champions in the game that doesn't rely on any source of secondary resource to cast spells. Her base movement speed is quite high so she can roam quite a bit, really quickly and proficiently as well. As an Assassin, Katarina has Magic resistance scaling passively as well, making her surprisingly resilient against Magic damage then one would assume.

Statistics
Health 425 (+80)
Health regen. 6.95 (+0.55)
No Resource
Range 125 (Melee)
Attack damage 53 (+3.2)
Attack speed 0.658 (+2.74%)
Armor 21 (+3.5)
Magic res. 30 (+1.25)
Mov. speed 345

Her skills all have great synergy with her role:

NO COOLDOWN PASSIVE SKILL

Scoring a kill or assist will reduce all the cooldowns of Katarina's abilities by 15 seconds.

Her passive basically resets all of her basic skills. It's probably the most overpowered passive in the game. This skill is what makes Katarina, Katarina. A note to take is that Voracity will continue to activate even when you're dead, so don't be surprised when you have your ultimate back up when you respawn after a skirmish.

Range: 675 Cooldown: 10 / 9.5 / 9 / 8.5 / 8
Dagger Magic damage: 60 / 85 / 110 / 135 / 160 (+ 45% AP)
Mark Magic damage: 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 / 75 (+ 15% AP)
Total Damage: 75 / 115 / 155 / 195 / 235 (+ 60% AP)

Katarina throws a dagger that bounces quickly from enemy to enemy, dealing magic damage and marking each enemy hit for 4 seconds. Bouncing Blades hits a total of 5 unique targets (4 bounces), each striking the closest next target. Each subsequent hit deals 10% less damage.

Striking a marked target with an ability or basic attack will consume the mark to deal additional magic damage.

This skill is your ranged spam poke and farming tool in the early game. You use this skill to farm, to harass, and to burst. The scaling and both parts to the skill are quite low however (45% Dagger, 15% Mark for a total of 60% Ap ratio if you hit both parts) Thank the lords that Katarina is a manaless champion or she'll be done for.

Important notes about the ability:
  • Bouncing Blades is a targeted chain area of effect ability.
  • Applies spell effects as an area of effect ability.
  • Spell vamp is reduced to one-third effectiveness.
  • Rylai's Crystal Scepter will apply a 15% slow.
  • Magic damage will be mitigated by Black Shield.
  • Spell shields will block the ability and prevent any additional bounces from occuring.
  • Bouncing Blades can hit targets obscured by the fog of war or who are stealthed.
  • The mark damage from Bouncing Blades can be triggered and refreshed by other Bouncing Blades

sinister steel Range: 375 Cooldown: 4
Magic damage: 40 / 75 / 110 / 145 / 180 (+ 25% AP) (+ 60% bonus AD)
Movement speed: 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35%

Katarina whirls her daggers, instantly dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies. If she damages an enemy champion, she gains movement speed for 1 second.

Sinister Steel is a melee AoE self buff wave clear ability with a very low cooldown at a fixed 4 second cool down. Sinister Steel can help you escape with the movement speed buff when you hit a champion, helping you juke out enemy champions from brushes. Sinister Steel can also help you catch up to enemy champions with the movement speed as well. Or simply farm minions in the laning phase with it's range being a bit higher then your auto attack range. Remember that Sinister Steel will, at level 1, make the caster minions auto attack executable under the tower with one tower shot.
  • Sinister Steel is a point blank area of effect ability that also provides a self-buff.
  • Applies spell effects as an area of effect ability.
  • Spell vamp is reduced to one-third effectiveness.
  • Rylai's Crystal Scepter will apply a 15% slow.
  • Magic damage will be mitigated by Black Shield.
  • Spell shields will block the damage but will not prevent Katarina from obtaining the movement speed buff.
  • Sinister Steel has no cast time and does not interrupt Katarina's previous orders.

Range: 700 Cooldown: 12 / 10.5 / 9 / 7.5 / 6
Magic damage: 60 / 85 / 110 / 135 / 160 (+ 40% AP)

Katarina teleports to target unit and gains 15% damage reduction for 1.5 seconds. If the target is an enemy, the target takes magic damage.

Shunpo is a instant teleport/blink movement ability that also does damage with a decent range. It is your gap closer and escape on Katarina.
  • Shunpo is a targeted blink.
  • Applies spell effects as a single target ability.
  • Spell vamp is fully applied.
  • Rylai's Crystal Scepter will apply a 35% slow.
  • Magic damage will be mitigated by Black Shield.
  • Spell shields will block the ability's damage but do not prevent the blink from occurring.
  • Katarina will automatically attempt to attack the target of Shunpo after blinking.
  • Shunpo can be used on any targetable allied or enemy unit except for towers and inhibitors. This can include champions, minions, wards and champion pets such as Teemo's Noxious Trap, Jarvan IV's Demacian Standard, Thresh's Dark Passage and the Capture Points (whether Neutral, Allied or Enemy controlled) on the Crystal Scar.

Range: 550 Cooldown: 60 / 52.5 / 45
Magic damage per dagger: 40 / 57.5 / 75 (+ 25% AP) (+ 37.5% bonus AD)
Maximum damage to each enemy: 400 / 575 / 750 (+ 250% AP) (+ 375% bonus AD)

Katarina rapidly spins in place and channels for 2.5 seconds, throwing a barrage of up to 30 daggers at the closest 3 enemy champions within range. Each dagger deals magic damage and applies Grievous Wounds for 3 seconds, reducing regeneration and incoming healing by 50%. Death Lotus can hit a single enemy champion no more than 10 times.

A full channel of Death Lotus does the same amount of damage as a full rotation of all of Katarina's basic abilities. Keep in mind that Death Lotus can be interrupted by every Crowd Control but Slows, snares, and tangles ( Amumu's Curse of the Sad Mummy)
  • Death Lotus is a point blank auto-targeted ability.
  • Applies spell effects as an area of effect ability.
  • Spell vamp is reduced to one-third effectiveness.
  • Rylai's Crystal Scepter will apply a 15% slow.
  • Magic damage will be mitigated by Black Shield and Lifeline.
  • Spell shields will block only a single dagger. Additional attacks from the same Death Lotus will not be blocked.
  • Death Lotus cannot be activated unless there is at least one enemy champion in range of the ability. Leaving the ability radius while she is channeling will not cause her to stop prematurely.
  • Death Lotus can be activated even when Katarina does not have sight of her target (through fog of war or stealth effects).

Runes, Masteries, and Ability Sequence

Ability Sequence

We get Bouncing Blades at level 1 because it does the most damage out of the 3 spells and is ranged so it helps you cs when you get to lane against a ranged champion. Next we get Shunpo to escape any threat of level 2 ganks so we don't have to burn our Flash to escape. After that we finally get Sinister Steel in case your minion wave gets shoved into the turret so you can execute the caster minions for gold. Prioritize Death Lotus, then Bouncing Blades, after that sinister steel, and finally Shunpo. Bouncing Blades does the most burst damage from the 3 basic spells, and is your ranged harass / Minion wave pusher / last hitting tool, the versatility of this spell is why we max it first, then we max Sinister Steel because of how you can wave clear the Caster minions with a Bouncing Blades and Sinister Steel combo for lost of money. Prioritize Shunpo last because of how it's mainly a utility spell without much damage scaling with levels. Also you're supposed to get the reset jumps instead of the lower cooldowns anyways. When you jump in as Katarina you should be fully committed.

Rune Page

We get Magic Penetration runes because it's pretty much literally the only viable runes for any ability power champion. Next, we get Armor runes, or Health runes against an melee AP Mid for a defensive stat so we don't get whiddled down by ranged auto attacks, or an AD assassin instabursting you in lane when we're not careful and this also allows us to trade damage with the other laner. For our Glyphs, we get magic resistance runes, this could be traded in for flat Ability power runes against AD mids. For Quintessences we get Movement Speed runes because of how much outplay potential it gives a player. Also because as Katarina you're supposed to be ganking other lanes a lot because you are still classified as an assassin and a roamer.
