I clearly had misinformation: based on something I had read I was under the impression ELO had something to do with KDR...clearly this is not the case

Not quite. The only way for that to work is have a premade team that you do well with. You can suck with a carry and still win with bad teammates/good enemies, but you can't do the same thing with a tank. Some characters like Ashe need good team support as well. You can go 9/0 with Karma every game and still lose, and still be in the 900's, because Karma is not a carry and cannot carry games by herself.
If you do enough good things you win a match. You can do it with every kind of champion. It's just easier with damage dealers.

No Searz...not true. I can generally tank very well with Malphite. I can feed my teammates, and feed their farm early game. I have good map awareness, however I can't carry my game because even if I do feed my teammates, I can't be everywhere at once and almost every time I play there is someone who feeds early, mid and late. My 8/0 Xin dies to there 8/0 Ashe because of that teammate and other player skill. That was a bad example but you get what i'm saying.
