VulK: one flaw in your argument is the case of ELO being all luck. Take Xai again.
He is quite a skilled player, yet you say he should be at a higher ELO. The fact is, he's in the high 1500s now, which is much better than most people on the site. Why isn't he "higher", say 1800? He's not that good yet. I refuse to believe that anyone who's played over 100 games in ranked and can't get out of a certain ELO bracket is there only because of luck. It's just statistically impossible.

It isn't all luck, it is MOSTLY luck :)
also he reduces the factors by duo-queuing, usually with Boosh or Adon, so he has at least one other competent player.
also, in arranged, more so than solo, a large factor is communication.

No, I have never Duo'd with Boosh, and only twice with Xai. Most of the time I solo Q, ask ANYONE. My skill got me to 1500 and hopefully it will take me further. You can't have all these high opinions on elo hell/luck/etc when you have barely any Ranked games played.
All this talk about elo hell, not liking the people, trolls, feeders. It all just makes me think people are too scared to do Ranked.
There are things you can do to HELP feeders, for example; gank their lane for them.
Call MIA's from other lanes if they aren't doing it themselves.
WIN YOUR LANE (I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH) people complain about the jungler not ganking? Ok well you're losing a 1v1/2v2 it means you're bad.
TL DR; play more Ranked, if you're still at the same elo after a three hundred games then you can QQ. Look at Consid (700+ Ranked games) he doesn't ***** and moan about feeders, he keeps trying and his skill got him to where he is.
Australians, the best gamers in the world combined with the worst ping.
That's nice, but I am just talking about ELO as a number, not what happens in ranked.
What is ELO? W/L ratio.
How do you W/L?
Many factors, not just how good you are.

I haven't mentioned ELO hell once, I am just simply stating why being hot headed about ELO is irrational.

Because HSGG managed to get both HotshotGG and Kakasoul to #1 and #2, based on luck.
Because Bigfatjiji manage to get both Bigfatlp and Richard Tracy to #3 and #4, based on luck.
Let's face it, your elo is YOUR elo. It's not your teammates' elo.

Of course, this is a little less drastically applied to the really high ELO people (Doublelift, HSGG, Jiji, Chauster, TRM, etc etc), since they win so much, they are really doing things right. The journey up to their ELO might have been shaky, and DURING that journey, those previously mentioned factors had to be on their side a lot. But, once they got up to 1800s, 1900s, 2000s+ and got with other decent and lucky players, that is when ELO becomes more skill based: Since you are against other people at similar ELO, and usually people at this level have reduced outside factors (less AFKers, less idiots, people actually are serious about the game), the ones who are the best really shine and become the top rankers.
And they can afford to lose some at this ELO, since it won't drop their ELO as drastically as lower ELO due to their ELO being...so high. (more games played, less each affects your ELO, and at this ELO, you have a lot of ranked games in your wallet)

ELO means **** except luck until you get in the top few 100s, then you have bragging rights and are 99.99% (no guarantees, leaves room [.01%] for some leeway, always gotta be safe, first rule of thumb for anyone with common knowledge ;) ) really good.
If you are not in the top few 100s, I am not saying you are bad: you could be BETTER than the really high ELO people. But you just didn't get the factors towards you, you just weren't as lucky. Don't worry about your ELO so much at that level, since it means ****.

Why don't I play ranked games?
Since I don't want to have to worry about these factors, I play games to have fun in my spare time, games are not my life. I want to have fun with the free time I have, so I play normals. I may very well be better than a lot of you ranked players, so don't think that just coz you play more ranked and are lucky that you are better than someone who doesn't play ranked.

ELO is NOT W/L. Sure to an extent it is but it's a measurement of how well you do playing League of Legends. The better a player you are the more you'll win, quite obviously. It's the simple factor of how good you are because if YOU aren't able to perform to a certain standard, then YOU aren't going to get out the ELO you're in.
"It's a team game!" Well yes but you should learn to be self-reliant. Calling out that you have a team of feeders. It's not "mostly luck" as you put it until the higher ELO, your ELO in general is representative of your skill.
