I have been playing LoL for a while now and I really enjoy the game. One of my favorite heroes is Zilean. I just love the trolling delay with the bombs and being able to save your teammates. Zilean just has a really nice feel to him and once I got the hang of him it has been a lot of fun. I have tried a lot of builds and I recently started experimentation with my own build. There are a couple of very nice support builds but a strong AP is missing imo. I am really looking for some constructive criticism. Especially on the masteries aspect. Here is my item build:
1) Regrowth pendant + health pot
2) Upgrade the pendant into a Philosophers Stone
3) Boots of speed, and upgrade those into Sorcerer Shoes
4) Morello's Evil Tome
5) Eleisha's Miracle (Upgraded from Philosophers Stone)
5) Rabadon's Death Cap
6) Rylai's Crystal Scepter
7) Banshee Veil OR Force of Nature depending on AD or AP

AP relevant masteries with a few points into utilities
Runes mostly magic pen, extra AP, and such

There is very little protection in this build. If you have a laning partner it should not matter that much as you can run like the wind when needed and in the rare case of being solo ganked you can ulti yourself.

PS If I am making a fool out of myself with these items it might be because i dont play ranked.

You have to plan on either supporting (having a laning partner) or going mid (AP Carry). In ranked and higher level games people tend to stick to the metagame (top lane, mid lane, support/carry bot lane, jungle) pretty strictly. So pick one and don't say "If you have a laning partner..." because when writing a build you need to know the situation ahead of time.

Regrowth + hp is not a very good start. I would start boots x 3hp if you're going mid or faerie charm x3 wards x2 hp if you're going bot. The wards are important early game going bot to protect you and your partner from jungle ganks.

Sorc shoes don't actually provide that much magic pen, and you will probably need to buy a Void Staff later if you are going AP. I would switch to CDR boots.

shurelya's reverie is a stronger item in general than eleisha's miracle to upgrade from phil stone. Shurelya's lets you initiate / escape teamfights which is very strong, and the CDR is great.

Force of Nature isn't a very good item on someone without a lot of health / isn't already tanky. I am also confused why you say "depending on AD or AP" since they both have magic resist. If you want a strong survival item for your last slot Guardian Angel is always good. And I prefer Quicksilver Sash over BV because with the active you can usually escape in more situations than BV.

If you're switching out some items for CDR items make sure you're not going over 40% CDR, or at least close to it.

Mowen got promoted!!! Anyway, Eleisa's Miracle is a terribad item. Shurelya's Reverie is much better. Also, Rod of Ages is a lot better than Rylai's Crystal Scepter on Zilean because the slow doesn't proc on his bombs till ey explode and it is an AoE explosion, too. Getting Ionian Boots of Lucidity is much better than Sorcerer's Shoes.

Banshee's Veil is much better than Force of Nature on Zilean because his base hp is very bad and he does not need hp regen.

If you are supporting, Rabadon's Deathcap is bad on him for obvious reasons. This is a strange build beause you are going both support and AP mid...

Edit: Scratch that boots off. Get Mercury's Treads so you don't go over the 40 cd reduction cap.
Thanks to Xiron and ProAsylum (Ignition) for the amazing signatures!
If I helped out with constructive criticsm, I would appreciate a +rep

You should either go support or AP mid. Personally, I prefer Zil as an AP mid, but that's my preference.

Support build:

Faerie Charm + 3x Sight Wards + 2 Health Potions
Philosopher's Stone
Heart of Gold
Boots of Speed > Ionian Boots of Lucidity
Aegis of the Legion
Shurelya's Reverie
Abyssal Mask or Randuin's Omen ( Frozen Heart, if you get it, get Mercury's Treads instead of Ionian Boots of Lucidity)

AP build:

Boots of Speed + 3x Health Potions
Catalyst the Protector > Rod of Ages
Ionian Boots of Lucidity
Rabadon's Deathcap
Void Staff
Zhonya's Hourglass
Last Item is situational, probably want an Athene's Unholy Grail or a Deathfire Grasp.

Never get Rylai's Crystal Scepter on Zilean, you only have 1 damaging ability and the slow won't make much difference. Rod of Ages is greatly superior. You also have Time Warp for slowing.

Don't try to be half support/half AP. It won't work too well. Either go full support or full AP. Besides, if you have around 35% CDR, you can support pretty well as an AP character.

If I helped you, click that +rep!
