You have just as much chance of getting a smurf on your team as you do on the enemy team. Most people claiming to be smurfs are actually not. I got a bunch of friend requests recently from bronzies, some kid had been pretending to be me.
How good are you at math lasty?
Or let me ask you in another way, how does 4=5?
Ty MM and Blood for the sigs :3 | Rammus is comming back - heard it here first!

wouldnt it be 4/9 chance for the smurf to be on your team since you count as a player and your not the smurf and 5/9 for the enemy team?
EDIT : Ah had only read until your post, I guess I'm not the first to point it out ^.^
Also smurfs make new players scared and just unpleasant... not even diamond and plat smurfs but all of them... I once made a new account for my younger sibling and when it played its first game, I watched and all the players in the game obviously knew about the game mechanics and stuff and had played many times before... what do you think happened to the real brand new player who has never played a MOBA or any topdown rts or any game like it before? It got dominated and was really frustrated and hasn't played since.

if you're good enough to be gold/plat/diamond - you'll need the practice and won't be at a huge disadvantage anyways.
if you aren't good enough to be gold/plat/diamond - you need the increased challenge from that player who is significantly better than you in order to progress as a player, not to mention that you'll see smurfs far less often depending on how low of an elo you are.
I'd honestly argue that it's a pretty good thing for League.
A challenge yes/maybe... a no-win scenario I don't think is very positive... all I can see it doing is make the player frustrated

Also I beat Zekent while he was smurfing, I'm proud =) Plus he was duoing with another smurf that I don't know
Although beating an ADC Leblanc + Support Zilean as Blitzcrank isn't that much to brag about

Matchmaking will figure out if you're a smurf and put you against opponents that equal your MMR. If you are a Diamond 1 smurf and win 10 games in a row, you're going to be placed with other high win rate players.
Additionally if you check the "I am experienced" box when creating your account, you'll be placed with "experienced" players.
So I guess smurfing itself is not a problem, as smurfs for legitimate reasons (like having a level 30 account on different servers to play with different friends) is a necessary evil.
However, what I don't like is Diamond 1 players playing with a Bronze V buddy in ranked (whether smurfing or not). Like Chemist said, you can't learn from a stomp.

i tend to tell people im a smurf mid way through a game after i start getting a few kills, it gets them to listen better to my plays
also smurfs are kind of...annoying, i mean if youre a helpful one giving hints to people on your team and the other team then everyone benefits but if you have a smurf thats calling everyone terrible while going 0/4/0 with jax top then thats a problem

I still remember the first time I ever smurfed at bronze, I ended the game 22/10 or something as Talon, and couldn't carry the game because of a fed enemy Tryndamere who never ever ever seemed to misjudge how fast I could get him to 0 HP and always ulted perfectly every time ( funnily enough I think he was also smurfing ), and every single time I failed to kill Tryndamere our 0/5 Elise would go ( I had told them I was gold 1 on my main to let me go mid ) "I KNEW IT, THERE'S NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOLD AND BRONZE, JUST LUCK".
So apparently there's no difference in skill between a 22/10 Talon and a 0/5 Elise, and if someone goes 0/5 in bronze, they deserve to be gold. O.o

Toxic smurfs are bad.
Other than that I don't see how smurfing is ever an issue.
You play against one, you can see how people better than you play.
You play with one, you get to see what decisions he makes and learn from them.
People who whine are people who want to only "climb elo" and not get better.
