You forgot to mention the labyrinthian site navigation that made it really difficult to find what you're looking for.

Indeed but at least the atmosphere is a lot better overall.

95% of the people who claim it's awful have never even checked it out. They just grab a random high rated or top rated guide which turns out to be awful and then claim that the entire mobafire community is screwed up. That's like filling a cup of seawater and then conclude that there's no fish in the ocean because there's no fish in the cup.
It doesn't help that the highest rated guide on MobaFire (last time I checked) was Bree's Ahri guide. I love Bree to death, but leaving that guide up with all the broken images and the comment that she isn't updating it anymore... kinda sucks.

And the one thing I hated was that so many of the other "mods" weren't in it to build a better product, but instead just wanted to bully.
Your guide needs X to be approved. Nevermind the pains you went through to make custom images since the coding is garbage, nevermind the solid theorycrafting or mathcraft. Nevermind the logical thoughts that go into the guide.
Denied because I dont like how it looks against my personal standard.
(IE, inclusion of lore)
