I've only seen their 1080p version of Nichijou, but that's really good. What's the problem?

An accurate list can be found below

Mazui - Amazing Group
Hadena - Troll Subs
Commie - ****ing Amaaazzzinggggg
gg - ******s
Coalgirls - Mega ******s, **** font, bloated files, just **** off.
Doki - Literally sentences like this: "Ohayo Karen chan, Do you want to go eat some oishii tabe?"
Than they write in a tl note: "If you watch anime you know what that means"

Sounds like another incredibly biased list by Cuddles..

Bloated? You mean high quality?
Their 1080p version of Nichijou with FLAC sound is really good quality and the font is just... it's your average font, without any special color, so I really don't understand your problem with it.

Everything else is pretty bad.

Please stop with the stupid statements.

You usually don't want to get anything higher than 720p unless it's an anime like Madoka, where the experience is just ruined unless it looks flawless.

I started watching Tamako Market and I can confirm that it is quite entertaining

Saying "confirm" makes it sound like you think of yourself as better than other people. Say something like "I found it quite enjoyable." instead.

Most people have limited hard drive space searz
1080p will quickly consume that
Coalgirls releases are plain weird
Watch their Bakemonogatari release
it's just not possible to not cringe at it.

Even the ending they **** up.
They localize Hikoboshi and Orihime
WHY?

You know what's worse, they switch the two
They literally say "I found Altair but where is Vega"
That's ****ing wrong

Sorry but that completely ruined it for me.

Oh but the worst part I forgot
The ****ing font
What the **** were they thinking with the font on that release

Mostly their speed. They're pretty slow, and they don't delivery high enough quality to really justify that. I think they only work off DVD/Blu-ray rips, too, so you don't see anything current from them. Their translations are fine, because pretty much no fansubbers that anyone actually uses are bad any more. I haven't had many experiences with Coalgirls (or related stuff like Coalguys), but when I've used them I haven't found anything terrible or particularly extraordinary. Based on this, I say they're pretty middle of the road.

(It's also worth noting that I have very little brand loyalty when it comes to fansubbing groups. I want the anime fast, and I want it with enough seeders, and I want it with subs that won't break my immersion. And preferably with small file sizes without hitting quality badly, because my internet's slow. Whichever sub group gives me the right combination of these on a particular series, I'm fine with. Certain sub groups are just better at the combination of speed, quality, and reasonable file size than others, so I end up watching them more.)

For the most part, I don't see the point in getting 1080p anime. Especially if it's not a DVD/Blu-ray rip. Japanese TV doesn't even broadcast in those resolutions, and the quality difference in the highly stylized anime environment isn't that major. Hell, the difference isn't that major in general unless you've got a huge screen, either. The file size difference is pretty major, though, as 1080p episodes are a solid 200MB larger (which is about an extra 60%) than 720p episodes, and for my slow-as-all-**** internet that's a really big deal. 1080p could really be a necessity if you're putting the anime up on a 25+ inch television screen, but otherwise I'd say just go for the 720p if it's an option. 720p tends to have more seeds anyway.

Hard drive space isn't an issue, Cuddles. If you're so limited in hard drive space that you're worried about a 200MB difference, you should delete some of the **** on your drive (which will have the added benefit of improving your computer's overall performance, as well). There's no need to be a digital packrat. Most of the stuff on your drive is probably anime anyway, and it'll still be on the internet if you need it again later.

I think you are forgetting the purpose of archiving
People who archive anime want to ensure that everyone is able to watch them
As time progresses, torrents will be forgotten about and if people don't have said anime archived, you might as well say that anime is ****ed.

How slow they are doesn't matter to me.
I've got really slow internet too, but I'd rather go with the high quality stuff since I don't watch all that much anime and am overall very selective of the anime I watch.
I think my priorities are:
Quality > Subs and Size > Speed

I've got a 24" screen and a pair of good eyes. I easily notice encoding flaws in lower quality, so I quite like BD quality.
I am aware that broadcasted stuff is 720p though, so I won't download a 1080p version unless I know it's a BD-rip.

Now you're just being stupid again.
Just download something that isn't high quality then...

If you're worried about (actual) archival and worried about storage at the same time, you're doing it wrong. And, Cuddles, as a student you shouldn't be worried about the former for any reason, so the latter should be your only real concern. Keep an anime on your hard drive if you plan on watching it again or are still seeding it, but otherwise delete it for the space. I'm bad about this, too, but I plan on deleting a lot of the **** off my hard drive soon-ish, since I'm down to about 130 GB of my 1 TB.

I can see what Cudd means about the font differences, but he's really throwing on the hyperbole there. The spoilered image has font with a less clear border and thinner text. Combined with the longer (and probably more literal) translation, I can see why the latter is preferable. It's not like the spoilered image is unwatchable, though, so I don't really see the point overall. (And, yeah, Cudd, if you'd just explained it like this in the first place instead of just stating your opinion and asking us to guess what your reasons are, you'd probably have a much easier time here.) I kinda' prefer Coalgirl's translation, though. It seems much more true to the kinda' stilted way the Japanese speak, and the length of the text really helps drive home how Bakamonogatari is supposed to be kinda' awkward.

On the subject of spoilering images...

If you're looking for DVD/Blu-ray quality in anime, make sure you actually look for DVD rip or BD rip or something like that in the torrent title. If it just says 1080p, it could be the CR 1080p version, which I'm not really sure how they get to the larger size. If someone happens to know, I'd love to learn. (Searz, this isn't actually aimed at you, FYI.)

Honestly, when it comes to choosing a fansubbing group, it's hard to go wrong with what's popular. Popularity is never an indication of what's the best, but it's pretty much always an indication of what isn't bad.

The translation isn't different
The ANE release splits up the statement so they show up at different times
ANE has the better subtitles in reality

Also, Really this list is perfect for fansub groups, ranked by quality

1. Mazui, Commie
2. UTW, HorribleSubs
3. Sage, gg
4. Eclipse, UTWoots
5. Underwater, rori
6. Coalguys, Whynot, Ayako, URW
7. Everyone else

Also, im not worried about storage. I have around 2.5 terabytes of space which I can use for anime
I was saying that 1080p is space consuming on behalf of all the people who don't have this much space

that font isn't bad at all rofl...

also I don't bother downloading anime (because I can find pretty much all of it on crunchyroll for free) but I don't see what the big deal is about not having enough space or something, just download 1 anime, watch it, delete it, move onto another.

I literally just said i'm archiving.
Also, torrenting anime gives you quality subtitles and picture.
I would much rather watch an anime at 720p or 1080p over 480p
