    Tier Three Boots?

I've been having a hard time deciding when to upgrade my boots to tier three. I know it probably varies from champion to champion, and that it is why I'll ask more general questions. Is it ever a good idea to purchase tier three boots as your final purchase (after full build)? Is the time of purchase depend on your role (mid, jungle, support, top, ad)? When is it ever a good idea to use Enchantment: Homeguard or Enchantment: Distortion?

TL;DR: When do you typically buy tier three boots on your champion?

I'd usually upgrade if I have enough gold (around 700) for an enchantment, but not enough for a significant piece of my core build. If there's a specific enchantment that you want right away, you can invest in it instead of buying a bigger item. That's sometimes worth it.

I usually think of it like a Doran's Blade. Usually you buy it when you don't have enough gold for what you really want, but you want to spend some gold on something.

Enchantment: Distortion is a must-have if you go Ghost- Teleport or Flash- Teleport imo. I don't think I could justify taking anything else when I could get 75 seconds off my tp cooldown plus get my escape spell up more often. Personally I think it's one of the strongest enchantments (perhaps THE strongest) if used on both spells.

Enchantment: Homeguard is good to get if you're turtling in base, waiting for your inhibs to respawn or the enemy baron buff to expire or something. Some people have been using it to do homeguard+teleport ganks, but I don't think that's worth sacrificing Distortion. I would consider this enchantment more of an impulse buy than anything you'd plan for. I wouldn't want to have to resort to this if I didn't have to.

I also saw voyboy abuse Enchantment: Homeguard in TSM Tournaments last night with teleport. He would base and then teleport with the speed boost.

    My suggestion is to look at it depending on your needs;
    • If you have flash/ghost/tele combinations then Enchantment: Distortion boots are probably best
    • If you're the main source of CC for your team then Enchantment: Furor is great, helps you catch up to an enemy and slow them until a damage dealer can come in, also great for an ADC like Ashe, the slow-speed buff combo is great.
    • If you're a tank or spend a lot of time on the front line, maybe blazing a path for the rest of your team. I'd say Enchantment: Captain are best, helps the main damage dealers catch up.
    • Enchantment: Alacrity is probably my least favourite, it's a small speed increase and it's a little static really... but if you've got yourself some CDR boots or merc treads and find yourself caught out a bit then it can be a lifesaver, I just feel there are better alternatives.
    • Enchantment: Homeguard are most widely used, but I barely buy them unless circumstances call for it, If the enemies are knocking in your base doors they can allow some great access almost instantly, they also work perfectly in conjuction with Teleport (as you would probably know from ANY Hecarim) great for engages but most people buy them early for no reason, these are a late game situational enchantment.

As for the question of when, again it's situational,
    • If you plan to use your Enchantment: Homeguard for engagement, then it may be best to rush them or get them pretty quick, otherwise leave the Enchantment: Homeguard for late game.
    • Enchantment: Alacrity again as I said if you find yourself caught out it can be useful, so whenever you feel "f*ck I'm going too slow, gankers and bush campers are screwing me over" get 'em,
    • Enchantment: Captain usually when you start seeing kiting potentials get away, or when your damage dealers are lagging a bit. I main Janna with furor but her passive is basically the same as this enchantment and as most people can tell you engaging with a Janna is much easier due to her passive making these great for a Morgana/ Thresh/ Malphite/ Volibear/ Alistar , basically anyone with a headlong surge into the centre of a crowd of enemies. as soon as you see the teamfight timescale arising.
    • Enchantment: Furor for whenever you need to CC an annoying champion get these as soon as they escape once due to speed constraints get these. Ekko/ Jinx/ Kalista/ Sivir specifically. Catching up as a Janna can be easy, these allow you to keep the chase going dropping whirlwinds from their backside zoning them out easy it can even make it fun just to toy with them...
    • Enchantment: Distortion for TP ganks (against lets say a Twisted Fate), or for some easier escapes or counter ganking. it'll happen more often it'll have a bit of a speed buff it's just a great choice. basically get these as soon as you sense impending ganks on your lane, or on vulnerable lanes (ADC/Supp) these are massively underrated but a brilliant enchantment.

Bit of irrelevant background I play support, Janna and morgana mostly although I also love thresh, lux and leona, with a soft spot for Galio support. alternatively I can play
top - Cho, Galio, Morg, gnar, lulu
mid - Morg, Heimer, lulu, brand, Lb, Lux, Kog, Galio

When I play as support (my main role) I usually take
Enchantment: Homeguard but only late game when my support build is nearly done.

When I play top (my second favorite role) I get Enchantment: Captain
Because my top lane picks are usually Kennen Volibear

As for adc/single target champions, I suggest
Enchantment: Furor or Enchantment: Alacrity for the bonus movement speed, because these champions are usually slow.

Just to clarify, I choose Enchantment: Captain because my top lane champions are usually tanks/fight initiators.

Also, for Enchantment: Homeguard I buy this to get to my team quicker after a recall.

Through the power of mathcrafting it is easy to deduce that Enchantment: Alacrity is bad because of the same reason Boots of Swiftness are bad. Not enough "bang for your buck" a.k.a. "move speed for your gold".

That leaves the other 4 enchantments.

Enchantment: Distortion is okay with a mix of Flash/ Ghost/ Teleport, but I'm not sure I would go out of my way to put this combo together after testing it.

Enchantment: Homeguard is probably the most popular and talked about upgrade. Probably also the best one, but its caveat-catch is that you should only get it when you are losing (and if you're losing, this probably won't save you in my honest opinion)

Enchantment: Furor is best on your single-target DPS champions. AD carries like Varus, Ashe, or Ezreal. Assassins like Nocturne, Akali, and Elise. Why? Because they'll be auto-attacking/casting single-target spells a lot.

Enchantment: Captain is best on your tank, Jarvan IV, Alistar, Sejuani, or Leona. Its gold cost is probably too expensive for tanks, however, and its gold cost is enough for a Chain Vest or Negatron Cloak.

Conclusion: Boot enchantments are a big evolutionary step for the items in League of Legends, but they haven't been done properly to warrant large-scale purchase. If your core is done, you can get these, but you're passing up other items most likely for it.

I basically never buy boot enchantments, myself, unless my item build is nearly full.

I typically buy them whenever I have the extra gold to afford them. They are nice but they are nothing amazing. I get homeguard of the enemy is trying to siege inhib towers.

Well, what i would do, is buy boots of mobility, and get Alacrity, it gives u +105 movement speed when out of combat for 5 sec
