I made some minor edits to bring the guide, but I'll do a more flushed out update later. The botlane meta is just weird right now.
Minor rune reorganization for the Inspiration tree. We're probably still in League of Stopwatches though.
Finally added W maxing notes to the guide body.
Changed recommended runes from resolve to inspiration. (I'm not jumping on the stopwatch bandwagon, mostly because I keep not actually needing/using it. Perhaps I just need more practice.)
Matchups and warding are still in the works. Sorry for the delay, but semester started and I'm getting swamped already.
Best of luck on the Rift!
It is such a masterpiece both in content and design you get my +1 and +fav 2000%
<3 your introduction and the reference to "as much rage in the enemy team as a Teemo" ^^
Very original and beautiful summoner's spells section
Even more original and beautiful runes chapter
All the strategy part is meaningful and covering a wide bunch of variations yet remains super clear
Great items part too but maybe slightly too many choices (trying to find anything not praise to say)
Thank you a lot for this fabulous guide.
I'll do my best to make it even more fabulous ;)
1/25/2017 Patch 8.2 Updates (a.k.a. rip my active items cdr)
Expect a detailed supports matchup up soon! Formatting it is taking a bit longer than expected.
First off, you did amazing- your guide looks SOOOOOO good!! I'm actually blown away (haha, pun)by how good it looks omg pls make my guide that beautiful??
I just see a couple things in your guide or that has been said and wanted to put my input in a little (more than I already have oops).
1. Runes. I think that the Resolve tree is 100% the best for Janna because Revitalize does what Janna is suppose to do. It makes your heals and shields stronger, and even stronger if they have low health. This works too insanely well with your ultimate, redemption, and what other heal items you may buy (esp since you'll be buying heal and shield power!!).
If you are taking the inspiration tree, I wouldn't recommend the footwear. Cosmic Insight is definitely the best, with the debt one being a close second. Boots are pretty important and waiting that long for boots could be a no no- especially for only 10MS more. I do understand you save some gold with it, but future's debt helps you get that extra Control Ward or a full item.
As for the domination tree, it seems unpopular but Ingenious Hunter is INSANELY strong (only if you're buying a ton of active items), and Zombie Ward makes the map light up like a christmas tree, aka why I did recommend it. I have had games where the redemption less than every minute kept my team way healthier than the other team and we won due to it. Redemption a team fight, then go take their inhibitor, then redemption as you guys are taking baron, and then have redemption up again for the next teamfight.
2. As much as QSS sounds nice to buy for yourself, it's really subpar and I would recommend not recommending it. It's 'expensive' for a support and other items offer way more for her. If you are getting CC'd a lot, either the enemy team is jumping on you (which is good because then your carry's can kill them), or you are in the front line/out of position in the first place. Plus, you can't really upgrade it later for something that will benefit Janna.
3. Things like Knight's Vow, Zz'Rot Portal, and Banner of Command are not that good on Janna. They do not provide enough compared to other items that could take their place.
4. Janna isn't really known for her ENGAGE, but rather, her DISENGAGE. She is very good at getting someone off of your teammate and protecting your allies, but she doesn't have much true engage besides flash>ulting and pushing (hopefully) the ADC into your team- which I still don't recommend because that means you and all your shields and heals die with it (plus you wasted your ult). That tactic only works in lane where you can push the enemies back towards your turret as your jungler and/or mid laner is coming to gank.
5. I would maybe even explain further on when an item might be good IN a build, rather than just separately. For example, for my Lux support, I take Athene's when they're a poke comp because I am able to use my E to get the stacks and then my shields HEAL teammates. Or, I get Locket of the Iron Solari vs burst comps and especially against someone like Ziggs. The locket will basically negate Zigg's ultimate! Having these ideas can help a reader figure out when to build and item and WHY, rather than just following the 6 items you recommend. I do like that you gave some example builds, it helps the reader look and interalize!
Ok that's all I have right now but I hope all of this helps and feel free to criticize anything I have said, I'd love to know your response!

Thank you thank you. I'd be happy to (after finals ;) )
1) With all the people pointing this out, I'm starting to see how Revitalize after rethinking this. I'll have to try it out more later and compare. And wow I've never thought much about using Future's Market on Janna. (It was so nice on Tris, I can't believe I didn't even consider it here).
I'm seriously contemplating how to format the runes section, because the primary sorcery should obviously be introduced first, but the secondary Resolve and Domination explainations are SO important! I'm worried people will look at the large section of text and not read to that part. Maybe I need a mini navigation within runes. (And strategy too now that I think about it)
2) Mmm, I see your point. It's a luxury item, but it's defensive and it's a waste of a spot in the full build, so you always sell it after Crucible for a CC heavy game anyways... I'll make the edit.
3) I personally find Zz'rot a rather interesting take on Janna because it helps alleviate situations where your team doesn't rotate quickly enough or don't want to rotate. This gives you a bit more autonomy, and allows you to impact the game a bit more. I haven't taken it in a game since patch 7.19 came live though, so I need to retest.
I see your point about Knight's Vow though. Especially since Spection pointed out the negligible damage mitigation and healing. In my mind 6% sounded fine, but it really is so little other items have way more utility. I thought it was gold efficient in terms of armor (rip my math skills went down the drain for this one) and once I actually wrote it down, I realized duh of course something like Frozen Heart is more efficient. I'll be removing this entirely fromt the guide. Maybe I'll add a section for 'items that seem good but are not'?
For Banner of Command, I haven't used it in a long time, and I only built it once or twice, both in extremely long 50min+ games, so I can't give enough analysis to suggest it. I see that other items have more utility though.
4) I think Janna is best suited for disengage, but I disagree with the engage part. She has great engage in the form of her tornato, but it's not threatening on it's own. It's also a huge prediction game, because it works as better engage (and well disengage actually) when you can charge it up.
Knockups are pretty cripling since it's almost as limiting as a stun. It's true that it's very dangerous to do so in a large scale teamfight sort of thing. But, in terms of smaller fights/skirmishes, I think Janna can be a great engage. There's also the element of surprise.
This would work better with a duo but you can knock up the ADC, predicting where they'll be to last hit farm/dodge, and you can turn on the support and burst them if they are squishy, when the ADC lands again, you can exhaust them and focus them. Or, knockup the ADC, focus the ADC and once they are released from the knockup, W and exhaust = super slow and likely kill before turning to the support. You can also change it up with knocking up the support (removing utility, damage and/or CC treat for a little), immediately exhausting the ADC and focusing the ADC (largely depent of matchup).
Janna is also great for tower diving. I found that in later laning phase, if the enemy is lowish and we can attempt a dive (usually with jg), I can shield, tank turret, reposition and ult them into the wall. The channel heals a lot of the turret damage and the shield negates some too. usually I have a Q set up as well, and I recast Q right before I ult. I usually ult them into the tower itself or a wall, trapping them there for my teammates to finish off. After a dive like that, if I fully channel and start wth ~80% health, I can come out with ~10-20% health. (Low, but usually with 2 assists.)
5. Good idea! I should reorganize everything based on matchup and being in a build. This helps people itemize against different teams, and it's more intuitive to have that under itemization over anything else.
Thank you <3

The only thing I have to say to this is true, tower diving with Janna isn't bad later on, especially if you let a tank with tons of armor tank it- then you just worry about protecting your allies and CC'ing the enemy. I love doing it with Lux. I also agree with how good the knock up on her tornado is, and that's why I still think she's pretty dang good if you play her right.
Also to add, I'd totally look at something the pros are doing right now- janna leveling up w first because aery takes place of her shield and it makes her poke and trades insane. I tried it once and it felt pretty good- although I would always take the shield first if you're going to need it for a hard lane.
And if top lane has a minion push, you're gonna either do a lot of damage to the towers, or force someone to deal with the top lane, which would let you have the number advantage in mid.
Both are very tanky items that lack utility for the team (well yes extra pushing pressure but, utility that helps with fights). Janna excels the most in team fights, peeling, and saving people. Having those two items together means you have only 4 slots left. Take one slot for boots and you have 3. Most of the time you won't be full 6 items, because you always want 3 Control Wards on you. That gives you 2 slots. This means you have either the one fully upgraded support item and a Ruby Sightstone or you have a eye of something and one utility item (most likely Redemption). This really, really cuts down on Janna's main job as a support.
Now for a meta-defying fun build of Janna top, that would be fun to try. In the classic build, it's just not utilizing Janna's strengths.
That said, long games no longer happen that often, and during those games, I find that people don't buy their strength/AP pots that they should be buying.
And that was from a shove lane Heim video. The guy placed the portal in the middle of his three turrets, and just kept shoving his lane.
It was stupid, but pretty funny.

I shared this guide on Reddit. A user called "YesItsActuallyMe had this to say. Quite a charmer, isn't he? :P
I know I have a lot to learn, about both the game in general and Janna. This is a good forum for me to both share what I've learned and listen to others.
In the short time since I've published this, and during the creation itself, I have been forced to really think about everything that I do as Janna, and everyone's feedback has been insightful to me.
Ah, I should probably make a reddit account and actually reply myself. Thanks for letting me know :)
