Hello, I'm a beginner in mid lane. I mostly play the adc and jg roles, and I like to think i do pretty well at both. But i've found some mid laners that I've found some interest in. I've been told I don't fully have a midlaner mindset. SO i'm looking for some tips on how to be succesful in mid lane. Basic tips, thinking strategies, and mindset tips. Oh and as for the midlaners I'm looking to pick, its mostly Syndra, and a little bit of anivia and kassadin.

For the most part mid lane doesn't go well for me, i either get to agressive, or get out played. I'm just looking for some basic tips so I can get a foothold in a new lane.

Please and thank you

I could advise you to find very in-depth guides about the champions you are the best / the most interested to learn. I know there are some amazing Syndra guides, they may provide you everything you want to know including positionning / warding / roaming and so on.

So, here's the long and short version of midlane:

Your specific champion choices aside, I'd first like to share general information about midlane, and what skills you'll be utilizing from already knowing ADC and Jungle.

First, the obvious stuff: Your job as a midlane is to get gold and experience, fill a damage dealing roll that your team lacks (usually AP), take mid tower (protect your own), and provide support for the jungler and every lane when the needs arise.

The less obvious stuff: So, I don't know how much you know about wave control from your time as an ADC... but at its most basic, try to kill minions slowly when your enemy mid is in lane, so you'll be fighting closer to your tower. After your opponent backs, dies, or roams, use your abilities to kill the minion wave quickly (even if it means a minion or two dying without you getting the gold), so that the enemy tower will kill the entirety of your wave - this will give you a minute to either place wards in the enemy's jungle, roam top or bottom for a gank, head back to spend some gold, or to farm a jungle camp.

Also important to know is that the distance between your tower and your opponent's tower is closer in midlane than any other lane, AND the distance from the lane to the bushes are further away. This makes Mid more difficult to gank, and is the main reason why characters with poor escape mechanics (like Anivia and Syndra) are pretty much only found in Mid.

Tower diving with the help of the jungler is common in top and bottom lane, but in the Mid, aggressive plays like that fail more often than they succeed specifically because of the proximity of the enemy jungler, and the fact that either top or bot lane (or both) can roam to Mid at a moment's notice.

While you're starting out, if you need to pick one side or the other to ward, pick the side of the river that is closest to your enemy's red buff.

Your specific champions all have wildly different play styles, and I agree with the above recommendation to seek out guides specifically for those champions.

Feel free to ask any follow up questions.

I want to thank you for the input. I will definitely do my best to intake this information and apply it to my endeavors as a mid- laner. And the more specific stuff will most likely come from experience and losses

Glad we could help.

Thinking back on when I was just starting Midlane, this tactic is a little bit selfish, but it should help you feel comfortable in any matchup:

Start with Doran's Ring and Health Potions for every AP mid that has Mana ( Doran's Blade for AD mids or Amplifying Tome for AP Mids without Mana). Take Teleport and Flash as your summoner spells every time. After your first 400 gold, make sure the minions are at least in the center of the lane, and recall. Buy your second Doran's Ring (or Doran's Blade, or if you started with the Amplifying Tome, get either a second Amplifying Tome or a Ruby Crystal) and teleport straight back to lane. The Doran's Ring gives great stats for the cost of the item, and having two will give you a bigger advantage at the moment than normal purchases would. You can use this advantage to make the early game easier for yourself.

If you ever forget what the guide says to build, these items are good on all Mids:

Haunting Guise eventually upgrade it to the Liandry's Torment, but the Guise by itself is usually the cheapest most effective power spike for an AP carry (for some champions, the cheapest power spike is a Sheen and early Lich Bane).

No matter which AP mid you're playing as... if your enemy laner is AD, build an early Seeker's Armguard. It'll become a Zhonya's Hourglass eventually, but the Seeker's Armguard is a cost effective source of AP and armor.

Morellonomicon is such a strong item right now. Nearly every AP mid buys this item and fully upgrades it early.

Hextech Rocketbelt provides good stats for any AP mid. It's not an "automatic buy" like the Morellonomicon

Many short range AP characters like Anivia and Annie buy the Rod of Ages early.

Rylai's Crystal Scepter is popular for longer range mages that still need more HP, as it helps land combos thanks to the slow.

Some mages, (notably Anivia, Kassadin, and Ryze) want lots of mana, and do very well with the Archangel's Staff, and/or the Rod of Ages.

When considering your final item, look at the items the enemy team is building. If at least two of them have 2+ Magic resist items, build a Void Staff. If not, finish things off with a Rabadibble Deathcap ( Rabadon's Deathcap).

Again, those are just general item suggestions. The immediate second Doran's Ring and an early Haunting Guise will often net you an easy (or at least safe) early game.

Seems like some great advice, the tp could be very helpful in the late game and the early game suggestions would be a great help for keeping up with more experienced mid laners

If you're a jungler like me there are some champs that play like jungler (roam and gank often, has excellent mobility to get in and out combat)

Try Ahri and LeBlanc, they're both assassin with great mobility.
Or Talon with Ignite for cheesy level 2 first blood and good roaming with his jumping rock ability.

But as midlaner you can't expect your gank to be as effective because everyone is gonna ping that you're missing from your lane as soon as you try to go and gank.

Twisted Fate is also a good option with his good farming, infinite mana, low cooldown stun and global teleport ult.

I've been thinking about taking talon through the jungle, something I've been told would require me being a lot more agressive than I currently am. If i do that I think the transfer over to midlane would be less than difficult. I've also taken to ezreal in his week of being free. He seems to be a sustainable mid laner and worked well in the few games I played him mid
