Hello and welcome to the MOBAFire Patch Summary - 8.24!

Welcome to the first big champion balance patch of the preseason! This patch includes nerfs to some of the recently dominant champions like Irelia, LeBlanc and Jax as well as some mixed changes to Galio and Viktor.

There are also a number of VFX, SFX and gameplay tweaks to several champions and game systems. Check out the full patch notes for details on any changes that interest you, and be sure to check out Riot's video summary below!


Updates & Balance Changes

Neeko is the newest champion to join the League of Legends roster this patch! Learn more about the Curious Chameleon below:

Item Changes

Healing: 15% of physical damage dealt (5% per target for area-effect abilities) ⇒ 15% of all damage dealt (5% per target for area-effect abilities)

Eye of the Herald now goes on a 3-second cooldown during combat with non-minions.

Removed: Removed


Rune Changes

Base Damage: 40-80 (lv 1-18) ⇒ 20-60 (lv 1-18)
Proc Model: Can no longer proc off other procs (ex. Scorch, Liandry's Torment) aside from Luden's Echo, whose effect is built to behave like a separate ability.


Other Changes

  • Jungle

    • First Murkwolf Spawn: 1:29 ⇒ 1:30

    • First Raptor Spawn: 1:28 ⇒ 1:30

  • Nexus Blitz

    • Nexus Blitz is back for another test run this Snowdown! Stay tuned for more information on when this experimental mode will be available to play.

  • Non-Summoner's Rift Modes

    • The new bounty system broke the old bounty system on maps that didn't switch over (i.e. maps that weren't Summoner's Rift). It's fixed now!

  • Hotkeys

    • New hotkeys have been added for champions with extra buttons, like Kindred's hunt bar and Neeko's shapeshift bar. These hotkeys won't do anything for champions without extra actions.

    • Default keybinding: SHIFT-F1 through SHIFT-F5.

    • These new bindings can be changed via Options -> Hotkeys -> Additional Hotkeys -> Abilities and Summoner Spells.

  • Ranked

    • Placements

      • See a provisional rank after just one Ranked game. It’s only visible to you until your placements are complete.

      • In your remaining placement games, you earn bonus LP in wins and can’t lose LP

      • After your placement games, your rank will be available for all to see

      • There’s no reset during preseason, so you’ll need to be unranked in a queue to try new placements before season start

    • Tiers & Divisions

      • Iron tier added below Bronze.

      • Grandmaster tier added between Master and Challenger.

      • Division V removed from all tiers.

      • All players in Division V moved up to Division IV.

      • As part of preseason testing for Grandmaster promotions, all players in Master and above will be set to Master tier, 0LP; details here.

    • Ranked Armor

      • A new way to show off your current rank now appears on your profile, Ranked dashboard, hovercard, and in-game lobbies.

      • Switch between Ranked and level armor by clicking on your summoner icon.

    • Ranked UI

      • The end-of-game screen is rejiggered to make your LP gains more clear.

      • The Ranked dashboard for Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger now more clearly shows promotion and demotion cutoffs.

      • Loading screen borders now reflect your current rank in the selected queue; you can click player cards to see their past rank banner.

  • Bugfixes

    • Fixed a bug causing Alistar's Headbutt to stun his target without displacing them if he cast recall in the middle of his W+Q combo to cancel the combo.

    • Master Yi's basic attack no longer cancels if Double Strike's stack counter expires mid-attack.

    • Fixed a bug that allowed Varus' allies to detonate Blighted Quiver.

    • Fixed a number of SFX and VFX issues.

Overall a really good patch. Finally some well deserved nerfs to all the BS from season 8...shame it came so late.

One question about your your provisional rank during placements. There already was a provisional rank, you just couldn't see it, so seeing it is not a real change. But now it says that it can no longer go down even if you lose all your games : is that a change? Before you could see your provisional rank on op.gg for example, so did that one go down if you lost games? Does it mean that now you'll start playing at a much lower elo in your first games?

Noooo...well...I mean, I know all champions were using Dark Harvest, but that was a hard nerf on Jhin for those who use it as their main rune.

Frankly they should just revert Dark Harvest, not nerf it. The rework is terrible.

The very concept of the rune working on long range abilities with 0 counterplay (unlike Arcane Comet which can be dodged) is seriously toxic for game health and the worst idea ever.

Also think about it : since it has to get hard nerfed because it works on long range poke that allows to farm infinite stacks (DH Karthus, Zoe etc, which simply shouldn't exist period), now they're actually nerfing melee autoattacking junglers, which were the traditional users of the old DH. Think about it for a minute : they just nerfed Diana jungle for the 3rd time. Diana jungle. Lul.

Lol I remember an Ask Riot article from a few months ago where they stated that "They wanted Dark Harvest to be something for only some specific champions, not something like Dark Harvest Maokai." What happened: Dark Harvest shifted from almost only being used by AD junglers into a rune every champ can use right now. Rito pls

What happened: Dark Harvest shifted from almost only being used by AD junglers into a rune every champ can use right now. Rito pls


Did they explicitly say dark harvest Maokai? LOL.

Dark harvest Maokai is pretty god tier actually, since it procs on saplings. Typically in ARAM, you just spam saplings and you have over 40 stacks in late game.

If I remember correctly they actually mentioned Dark Harvest Maokai lol.

And E max on aram with Dark Harvest, could be good. I tried with Arcane Comet already so why not.

OP.GG just guesses at this stuff, don't take their MMR calculation things as fact. They don't have any more info about your MMR than you do, they just make estimates based on the people in your games.

The new system is a bit different because you can place in plat 1 after one game and then skip series as you win games over the next 9 games. At the end of your first 10 games, you can be well into Diamond, whereas in the old system, the highest you could be after 10 games is just Plat 1.

Overall the result should be similar for most players but they made it more transparent and tweaked how the system works so it feels more rewarding to win games 'cause you see your rank go up, instead of just getting a rank after 10 games and you have no idea what it'll be until your 10th game finishes.
