Mercs are very nice but i love the CDR Ionian give early game. His cooldowns are huge early game especialy your beloved Ulti, but when you hit lvl 16... this might be valid to swap ionian for Merc hmmm...

Trinity Force is actually pretty effective on him. It makes his burst pretty insane after he ults to someone, just ask Chaotic about that.

Retreating?! Hell no, we're just attacking the other direction!

If you're having problems with survivability, grab Mercury's Treads early on and a Guardian Angel later. That should give you enough armor and MR to spare, and you'll get back up in the middle of the fight if you need to. It might be viable to get a catalyst the protector early on and turn it into a Banshee's Veil later, but as Searz said the BV probably isn't the best choice anymore.

If you're really enjoying the CDR on the Ionian Boots of Lucidity, I suggest getting The Brutalizer early on. It gives 10% CDR and armor penetration, which is invaluable. You can either turn it into a Youmuu's Ghostblade later on, or just sell it last, but the ghostblade is a great item on nocturne so I wouldn't suggest doing that.

Also, unless you're going against a strong mage enemy early on, the Hexdrinker probably isn't the greatest item to start off with. Since it only gives MR and a magic damage shield, it won't give you much defense from the enemy carry.

Good summary. GA+Merc should make you a lot more durable.
Brut hasn't been mentioned before tho. It looks like the single most important early/relatively early item to me.

i've faced heavy stun steams with heavy AoE. And i looked for some surv, any kind of CC will purely screw up Noct if you can survive the innitial REQ burst.

That is why i am looking for a good defensive item for him. Banshee is ok but i was not amazed by it's usefullness.
Like Cooldown Reduction?
Like A Defensive item?
Then why ont try are newwww Spirit Visageee

Well to be honest i think Frozen Mallet is pretty decent for nocturne.
Mainly as it gives an awesome slow, has some attack damage (not great but its something) and 700 health, it might not seem much but i usually get around 2700 hp where as any other nocturne has around 1900 (i also took fortitude quints).

For ME that seems more then enough allong with either GA or BV.
Hexdrinker is indeed a good item for starting squishyness but i preffer the slow as nocturne can only stop an enemy with his fear which has to be closeby the whole time (so ghost or any other speed skill might outrun you if you have no slow and your Q makes you stop 0.5-1 sec to cast).

Getting Merc's and GA, well i preffer dealing damage over tankiness as i usually play with shen's and rammus's and the health boost i got from FM is enough but it is a possibility, just not preffered on an assassin :P.

TriForce is more of a for-fun item then a core.

Mercury Treads are practically mandatory on Nocturne. He's way too cc-vulnerable.

Personally, I'd go for Black Cleaver first if anything.
Jungling with him makes better use for the team, and if you have a wriggles, the life steal becomes super nice with Armor Pen.
Especially if you're already building a Ghost blade.
Some people may prefer Phantom Dancer, and get a Bloodthirster for raw power then get Phantom dancer 2nd

Next item would definitely have to be a defensive item.
I hope they buff the shield back down to something like 40 second cooldown. 45 seconds is a LONG time.

Although, if you have Phantom Dancer + Force of Nature, you're going WOOOOOSH super fast with Paranoia + DuskBringer.

So, something like this:
-> -> -> -> / -> / ->

@Scrax:

Being able to hit big AD hits is generally preferable over many light AS-based hits, as it reduces chasing time.
If you can kill them in 4 hits instead of 10 hits, that's potentially 1~2 seconds less chasing time, and in team-fights, that can mean the difference between a win or a loss. :P

Nocturne already has huge AS steroids, best to build to make him spike harder.

Can't really agree with FoN, the only plus point for nocturne is the bonus movement speed, but since you already have Merc's you shouldn't get another mresist unless it's a heavy ap team you are facing.
Another reason i don't like FoN is because nocturne has little health and health regeneration (health per second regen) so it adds very little usefullness from that aswell (at least, without any hp items your health is around 1900-2100 and your regen just stinks).
Ofcourse if you are facing annoying target skills like fear or gaze you normally get BV that has mresist aswell even though you might not need it.
As for Trinity Force, well like he said, more of a for-fun item yeah.

Well i am always getting brutalizer.
GA is nice but still you are droping quite fast due to low HP and GA doesnt provide it.
I wanted to text the hex and what did i get... 5xAD team... went Yoyo/Ionian boots/Sunfire/Thornmail/Warmogs/Atmas... won with ease... but this was not the point, will try it again today.

What about going Mallet->GA for hp+resistances?

IDK but he seems more squishy than Yi or i just need to play as many games with him that i did with Yi XD
