THis is what i've been doing and it's been working wonders.
Philosopher's stone Philosopher's Stone, building it into a
Shurelya's Reverie
Boots of speed. building later into
Mercury's Treads.
Heart of Gold, building later into a
Randuin's Omen
Sunfire Cape
Force of Nature or
Banshee's Veil depending on team.
Good last choices can be
Guardian Angel,
Thornmail , or even
Abyssal Scepter even works well.
Tried a newish build on her and it did just as well.
I rush a
Sheen then start with the build i listed above while putting 3 into my W to make up for the loss of early stats the precede to max out her Q. This way it give nice early game burst with a shorter cooldown stun and having enough armor/magic resist stats to make it through until you can afford the sunfire.

i still think gettin triforce early is still the best option for her. Leona has really low dmg output and also no taunt, making the enemy team not want to attack her. Even if she goes in with her E and stuns carry, she really wont dish out that much dmg and most likely be ignored, making her tanking pointless. But idk, this is in my whole "current metagame" perspective.

She doesn't pose too much of a threat :P

I've done pure tank though not ready to test out Tritanking.
Item wise I go:
Philo
Merc Teads
Then either FoN or Glacial Shroud.
Followed by whatever I didn't pick before. So either FoN then Glacial or Glacial then FoN.
Sunfire
Abyssal Scepter
Granted it is dependent on the enemy team and what priorities I have on countering them.
Masteries 0/16/14
16 to get 4 points in Veteran Scars
14 to get a point in improved move speed and improved flash.
Runes-
Flat Health Marks
Armor Seals
MR Glyphs
Flat Health Quints
Other Options for Runes
Marks-Mpen or Armor Pen
Seals-Health per level
Glyphs-CDR or AP per level
Quints-Flat mana or any kind of defensive quints save for Dodge.
Summoner Spells:
Flash/Ignite works well but Exhaust-Tele-Ghost are viable options too.
Her mana use is minimal though her CDs are long, her last hit animation is alright and you can use her Q on turrets or inhibs for bonus damage. Her passive really works well.
To secure an opponent for a kill attempt I generally Prime Eclipse, Prime Stun, Zenith Blade to target. Ulti behind them slightly (past level 6 I mean.)
The stun is on next auto attack so it works to ready it before you charge in. The burst damage+an auto attack or ability from a teammate really hurts.
Skill Order I've been using is W/Q/W/Q/E/R then W>Q>E grab R at 6/11/16
However a more aggressive play style can do W/Q/E/W/Q/R so you can get the Eclipse+Stun+Zentih Blade combo early.
