Hi guys, I'm currently trying to improve my AD playstyle, and I was wondering what happens when I cast a spell.

Let's say I'm playing Corki and I'm harassing a lane opponent with a 1 atck/sec. I autoattack, I use Q (and its little animation) and I autoattack again.

Does the Q reset my autoattack internal cooldown ? With or without skipping one
AA (0.5 sec) - Q animation - instant autoattack
or AA (0.5sec) - Q animation - (1 sec) AA

Does it delay my next autoattack by the amount of time "casting" a Q takes (animation) ?
AA (0.5sec) - Q animation - (0.5sec) AA

I don't believe in that one, but maybe casting a Q doesnt change anything to my AAs ?

AA (0.5sec) - Q without importance on AA - (0.5sec) AA

Knowing that, I'll be able to know if it is better to AA between each spell or to unload all skills my AD has.

Thanks in advance.
English is not my native langage, I'm sorry about how painful to read my text are :c

Your abilities do not change your rate of aa. Sometimes it may seem that way because of the length of time the animation takes, but it doesnt. The game mechanics keep the two seperate. Now, one thing that might make changes, if you use an ability that is a skill shot, sometimes i have noticed that breaks the lock, and you have to re right click.
The only abilities that effect how often you AA are the cast-time or channeled abilities (such as Karthus Requiem and Ezreal Trueshot Barrage). The way the game is coded the two run on separate sequences, so its possible to aa and use an ability at the same time. The animation for both trying to happen at the same time might look funny, but eh, the damage still happens.
In general, use your abilities in combo's, your damage won't be gimped. Unless of course you have Sheen. in which case its probably smarter to use your spells in a more controlled fashion.

Hope this helped XD

^mostly right

There are some abilities (besides channels) that will refresh your autoattack timer, allowing you to deal more DPS if you time your abilities correctly. They're generally on-hit abilities, giving you an effect plus the damage from your regular autoattack.

ex. Siphoning Strike, Rabid Bite, Empower

If you're playing a champion that does a lot of damage through autoattacks (like Corki), space out your ability casts in between your autoattacks so you don't interrupt your regular DPS. Your spells won't affect the AS timer, but if you use abilities in place of an autoattack, you'll end up doing less damage.
Thanks to Hoppermh for the sig!

@Overmind Or unless you're Riven

On another note there ARE some abilities that instantly cooldown your AA. They are the 'on next hit' spells such as Siphoning Strike Empower Devastating Blow etc.

With these spells it's generally better to AA > Spell because you can attack, and then use the spell and it will IMMEDIATELY attack again.

Basically in some cases you'll want to combo in your AA, and other times you won't. You'll just have to learn what feels right on each champion.

Edit: Pretty much what Psi said

Hmm. I dont usually play the champs with the "next aa" abilities, so i was unaware of this. Thanks for the correction!

There are some skills that reset your AA animation for no reason. Can't think of any except Seismic Bastion, maybe some of Lee Sin's skills too.

Riven's Broken Wings reset all her AA timers, but only those.

Most of the time it's a good idea, because you're doing damage while you wait, but it's not when you're Caitlyn.
