The main point of mid is to roam and influence other lanes as hard as you can. If you just sit mid and farm and the enemy roams, your lanes will be losing and unless you are a super heavy farm champ and know how to shove efficiently, you will be useless compared to them. You don't want to roam if they are pushed to your tower, you don't want to lose that XP. Generally wait to either see the enemy in a really gankable position or just for you to shove the enemy mid out of lane or force him b. If he goes b, shove the lane and roam. Also make sure to always call mia as soon as the enemy ping goes missing and shove lane and follow the roam if he is roaming.
You want to generally roam bot, as that is the easier lane to gank since they are easier to kill, you have an extra teammate there to back you up, and if you DO kill them, you get more overall gold and can force dragons. That isn't to say not to gank top if they are easily gankable or your lane would do well with a gank, but focus on bot. Always keep tabs on where their wards are. Generally bot lanes don't ward their jungle, so if you shove up mid you can, if you are topside, go through wraiths past red and tower dive (don't go through tribush unless they are shoved all the way up since it is often warded) or from bottom side, you can go through your red into their blue jungle, around the wolves section to avoid wards and gank from behind there. Also lane ganks are potent if your support pinks the side bushes.
If you are playing against a heaver pusher in mid, just try to force them back and then roam, or tell your jungler to hold mid and roam. Or, just let them shove if you are guaranteed a good gank. Generally though, the strong roamers can push pretty well (akali, kat, eve, yi, etc.)
If you roam efficiently, you will get much more net gold for yourself and your team than you will lose from the cs, and you should still be csing well and picking up wraiths when your lane is shoved and the jungler isn't near.
To be honest though, roaming is hard at first. It takes a lot of practice to know when to see a good roam opportunity and a bad one. You have to take into account how high of a chance you have of getting a kill vs how much xp you will lose mid. Once you get the hang of it though it comes pretty naturally.
Let me know if you want me to clarify something or if you have any other questions ^^

as for zed, he works well mid or top, and ok in jungle. Basically rush brutalizer, then bt, then warmogs. Then finish bruta into black cleaver. If you're mid stick a hexdrinker somewhere in there.

if you play a champ who doesnt use ignite well what do you take?
like lux or karthus
tp, exhaust barrier, or ignite?
I'm not wrath, but he takes

Personally I feel like

But maybe wrath has different ideas, idk. :P I'm just bored.

Thanks to Jovy for the sig!
Yea Psi is on the spot. I don't really like Ignite on Lux but I keep forgetting to not take it :D TP and barrier are both strong on her, TP if bot lane is easily gankable, barrier if you are vs heavy burst.
