Champion Build Guide

[11.5] Ornn Guide (UPDATED 3/3/2021)

By rcyuumi
Learning Ornn
Hi all.
I am in the process of learning Ornn and am having a lot of fun doing so. I love using MobaFire to find interesting guides on champs I play or want to learn. I also find that getting better at a champ can be accelerated with thinking of how to explain it to others. So this will be a guide of my learning experience with Ornn.

For those of you who are reading this and don't find use of this guide, I hope you find what you are looking for elsewhere. For those who want to continue to read through, welcome and I hope this is of some help to you.

This project will last through March at the shortest and may extend beyond depending on my enjoyment of this champion at that time and my future League goals.
Itemization (Week 4)
2/27-3/5:
Items

First and foremost, we need to address the obvious: Ornn is a tank so build tank items.

At the start of the game, you should buy a corrupting potion. This is the best first buy for Ornn. Since it is a consumable, you cannot buy it in lane but it refills every time you back. With biscuits, this is a great sustain tool for staying in lane longer to soak xp from waves. Dorans shield makes little sense to me as an initial purchase. You don't need the health regen as much with biscuits and it doesn't help your early mana issues. You can also buy it in lane if you truly need it. Otherwise, this will delay your item buys.

You should have boots on your first back to allow you to walk back to lane faster if you don't use tp. Prioritize any consumables you need to buy (control wards) over normal items since you can buy them in lane. I don't recommend buying when the wave is pushing into your tower. Use time between waves arriving or when the wave is in a dangerous place for you to farm. You can also sacrifice some minions if you really need an item for a fight or an objective. Getting early armor, mr, or health is good. Buying a ruby crystal is great to "win" trades by just adding 150 health in lane. This is also great with corrupting, biscuits, and grasp. Into certain champions, resistances make more sense than health. Into others, health is the obvious choice. Champs that have some health percentage ability damage or item later will not be good to build purely health items into. Into a champ that does true damage, don't buy as much early armor (camille and vayne). Into healing champs, rush a bramble vest.

You don't need a huge amount of gold as Ornn. Is it nice, yes but it isn't necessary. You can play a purely utility Ornn who can tank a respectable amount of damage, cc opponents, and enable the carries of your team with item upgrades starting at level 14. This means you need solo xp not for gold as much as xp.

If you do get a huge lead in lane and get item advantages, you become unkillable in the mid game.

Mythics: Get sunfire most games
more coming soon

Second/Third Items: Thornmail and Abyssal are great second and third items depending on opponents
Sometimes, I recommend buying the best component of those above listed items and going knights vow before completing thornmail or abyssal. This is a great item given how well you scale and your role in the team.

Later Buys: coming soon
Week 3
2/20-2/26

I played another darius, urgot, and a new matchup: kayle. This is an easy one at level 3 and level 6, walk out of her ult (maybe use to set up q and e), then kill her after. At level 11, she starts to hurt. Don't take trades pre-3. Corrupting pots and biscuits came in clutch. Build some mr and you're fine for early levels.
Clash 2/20-2/21 (?)
This chapter is for my preparation leading up to and experience in the upcoming February Clash.

I am on a team that I mid lane for but we may be missing our top lane and with many others others on the team who can play mid, I may be our top laner this Clash.

I will be preparing my champion pool to play both roles in case this does occur. If I am top, I will have Ornn and Shen as my prepared champions (as I already learned the basic of Shen a few weeks ago). Unfortunately, this will put me at a disadvantage since I do not have much experience in top lane as I am a mid and sup player.

I will return with my notes from preparation and (if I play top) my Ornn Clash experience.

If you want to watch my Clash team, my friend will likely be streaming on twitch: AriMeyWasTaken

Post Clash:
I played Ornn in 2 of the 3 games. I went against a Malphite and an Urgot. I didn't die in lane in either game. We won the first against the malphite and lost the second game. I had a 2 kill advantage in the malphite game and went about even or a plate of gold behind in the other. I was able to get a lead in the first game by allowing malph to push the wave to my tower and use the right side of lane as another target for my e knock-up and trap him between ,y q and the wall. Using Q to last hit early and then taking short burst trades to deplete his mana worked well. He used his q off cool-down and with my corrupting pots and biscuits, I was able to sustain lane much better against him.
More to come later
Week 2: Ornn: Clash Preparation
2/13-2/19
As the week progresses, I will continue to add to this weekly notes chapter.

As of 2/15 in Week 2, I played 7 games against Illaoi, Vayne, Teemo, Gangplank, and Garen.
I am currently aiming to improve on laning phase rotations and last hitting. Wave management is fine as long s jungler doesn't mess with my wave. After level 12, I feel fine with the game as Ornn. Team fighting doesn't seem to be that difficult. I am trying to get to sunfire, knights vow, and flex defensive item by that level. Knights Vow is a great item once you can tank damage for your damage carry. Playing around your adc or mid in team fights is probably the best option without vision. If you move too far out, the other team has the opportunity to ignore you and take out your squishy back line. Fighting near terrain is good to not have to set up Q to get an E knock-up.
The Author: rcu06
Hi, this is rcu06 in NA. I was convinced by some friends to start playing league around April-ish of 2020. I had not played pc games before 2020 and was not much of an electronic game player at all besides casual Nintendo games with friends. This guide isn't likely to be useful to those beyond Gold (or even in tbh).

I am in Bronze due to a mixture of my lack of mechanical skill, game knowledge, and an unwillingness to put my full time into a video game as a person who wishes to be productive in many aspects of life (I have bad time management if I don't limit myself on things enjoy).

I started as a Yuumi 1 trick when a friend introduced me to the champ as we experimented with a Viegar Yuumi bot lane for the infinite scaling. I also experimented with different Yuumi builds at times: full ap, max mana and cdr to spam e, and pta Yuumi top lane with crit and attack speed. I stopped playing Yuumi to challenge myself and I went to mid lane for awhile. I mained Ahri, Lux, and Malzahar for periods of time. I also played Akali, Azir, Jayce, Syndra, and other champs casually. I briefly went back to support with Leona, Bard, Morgana, Ahri, and Senna. I now play a mix of those roles and top lane. When I played top, I used to rotate Akali, Shen, Jayce, Teemo, and Malzahar. Recently, I still play Malzahar and Teemo top with a few Shen games. In my games these past 3 days, I have spammed Ornn games to learn the champ. This is where we are at now as of 2/9/2021 and we will see how Ornn goes for me.
Week 1 Ornn: Beginning
2/6/2021-2/12/2021

I played about 20 games of Ornn in normal draft, blind, and ranked. I have also watched at least 3 guides on Ornn, 2 Ornn challenger vods, and a few LCK games of Ornn. In those 20 games, I played into a Riven, Voli, Urgot, Camille, Mordekaiser, Gragas, Teemo, Sett, Irelia, Gangplank, Tryndamere, Darius, and Quinn. I have also played in some customs with friends to check some other match-ups to experiment.

I love the sustain of this champ in lane by taking corrupting potion and biscuits. This paired with the passive ability to purchase non-consumables in lane makes punishing bad wave management by enemy laner easier and reaching power spikes faster. By staying in lane, you can hit your needed level 13 and on to fully aid your team by upgrading your own and other's mythic items.

Poking with or last hitting by using Q is an efficient way to remain present in lane while keeping the wave near your tower early. If you need to push the wave quickly, you can either Q E/W and W/E (I still need to get better at that).

Buying boots on your first back can make the walk to lane faster and then you can buy other needed items when you get the gold in lane.

Rushing defensive items seems best through either health, armor, or mr. Resistance items over health in most bad match-ups and health into good match-ups or true damage heavy champions.

Sunfire seems like the better mythic in most circumstances. Thornmail or Abyssal seem like good second item purchases.

Playing back to passive early is good until 3. Waiting until you can buy an item to trade with an advantage is good and isn't going to work if you take early poke.

Ornn Guide Notes
I will be updating with dated notes of my Ornn experience to document my time with this champ for my own records in an easily accessible location for myself. I will try to make these notes easily understood and as useful to those who read them.

I will keep some of the introductory chapters of this guide on top with the most recent weekly notes on Ornn.
Ornn "Threats"
In this guide, you will see a few "threats" to Ornn and the level of threat they pose. These are purely based on my experiences and understanding of the champs. As I play more Ornn, I will add to, update, and correct any and all information I find to be lacking.
