Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating and Unflinching
Move Speed
D Blade → Swifties (+Refillable) → Executioner's Calling → Tri Force
[*] Play for wave prio on the first few waves rather than poke. Aatrox will be able to hit you with Q1 and Q2 if he times them well against your autos in the early levels.
- Your goal is to farm well in the early levels until you have enough for Swifties, at that point the lane opens up quite a bit.
- Aatrox will often play his bread and butter Q1-E-W-Q2-Q3-AA combo for lots of burst. If you're able to dodge his Qs or run out of his W, you have a window to possibly punish.
- With Swifties you can run directly away from Aatrox out of his W.
- Before Swifties it is important you save your E to dodge Q2, or deny his W pull.
Akali
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating and Unflinching
Adaptive Force and Flat Health
D Shield → Refillable → {Hexdrinker}/Mercs/Swifties → Tri Force
- Maybe fight for prio level 1, but give if she has ignite
- Almost never see her, but the GOAL of this lane is to survive. She has 100 to 0 kill pressure on Mini Gnar with her ult, even if she is somewhat down.
- From even, you only win fights against Akali with Mega, play for Mega when you need to crash a wave, dive, or are being dove
- If you're ahead, consider hexdrinker over mercs, it's twice the magic resist, more effective HP with the shield similar CD to Akali's R, and Akali doesn't have cc
Ambessa
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating and Unflinching
Move Speed and (Flat HP)
D Shield → Refillable → armor/health components/(Plated Steelcaps) → Sunfire → Steraks
or
D Shield → Refillable → Plated Steelcaps → Tri Force
- Be ware of Ambessa with Electrocute, she can proc it level 1 quite easily. If she has Electrocute, it's most likely best to give prio on first wave.
- Ambessa works like Riven
1. Early game, Ambessa's ability cooldowns are your windows to trade
2. Her abilities are both her movement and damage
- Stay healthy and play for the wave. Use mega timings to crash waves and deter dives.
Aurora
Fleet Footwork
Biscuit Delivery (or Second Wind)
Move Speed
D Shield → Refillable → Swifties/Mercs → Tri Force
- Aurora will play to poke you out hard in the early levels. Play your best mind games to dodge her abilities pre-level 6 and focus on farm.
- That being said, don't stress about going down CS early to stay alive.
- After level 6, Mega will stat check Aurora if you can get onto her.
- It is very easy for Aurora to dodge your abilities, consider starting any combo in mega with ult to guarantee at least one rotation of your W and Q.
- The objective of playing like this is to either kill her or secure an HP advantage large enough that mini would kill in an all in, so that you have wave and CS
Camille
Fleet Footwork and Cut Down
Bone Plating and Unflinching
Move Speed
D Blade → Refillable → (Plated Steelcaps) → Tri Force
- Most of playing vs Camille is about being respectful and finding small poke
- Respect her Q onto the wave for move speed
- This can help her land W
- Respect fast E
- Respect the crazy E gap close and/or R when you're under threat of gank
- Be happy often just getting a Q or W proc off; small poke > slightly winning trade
- Try to dodge W, especially in the very early levels
- Use mega to crash waves and deter dives
Cassiopeia
Fleet Footwork
D Shield → Refillable → Swifties/Mercs → Tri Force
- You and Cass both have a weak level 1, so you can play for prio. First to hit level 2 has a huge advantage.
- Most important thing in this lane is dodging her Es. If she can't poison you, you'll win trades.
- This lane can either be super rough or easy if you get ahead early. Still, don't force it, you can always play for your team fight later.
Cho'Gath
Fleet Footwork
Unflinching
D Blade → Refillable → Swifties (maybe Mercs) → Tri Force/Blade of the Ruined King
Note: if the Cho is Heartsteel rush, BORK may be the way to go.
Freezing and slow pushing are your best friends vs Cho'Gath, if you play with good spacing and wave management, you'll out farm him, get plates in his face, and maybe get some kills.
Because Cho'Gath has very poor gank survivability he can be punished hard by your Jungler. The only way you can die in this lane is though ganks too aggressive, especially when Cho has ult.
Darius
Fleet Footwork
Cosmic Insight and Biscuit Delivery
D Blade → Refillable → Swifties → Tri Force
- This is one of those lanes where taking E level 1 can be good. If he gets an AA on you near the wave at level 1 and you're able to E out: you can trade even, chasing him down a bit and get the wave shoving into you.
- Don't try to get Fleet procs early unless he's used his Q, your AA range for the first few levels is low enough that he can E or Q you if you try to auto him.
- Darius always wants to run you down. Play for the wave. If you're able to play the wave well, he won't get his windows to run you down and you will win lane or go even.
- You out scale but he will always have kill pressure on side if you mess up.
Dr. Mundo
Ignite
Fleet Footwork
Cash Back
Move Speed
D Blade → Blade of the Ruined King → Tri Force → Streaks
- Hit S behind minions.
- It's ok if he's farming in the very early levels, just don't allow him to get a CS lead by poking you for free.
- Between your W damage and BORK, mini Gnar actually has quite a bit of kill threat in the later laning phase.
Fiora
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
Flat Health
D Shield → Refillable → Plated → Tri Force
- Fiora may try to zone you off first wave. There are several strategies to avoid this, but the most reliable I've found is to walk with the first wave and ward the first bush. This way if Fiora hits you very early on, minion aggro will follow her into the bush and the wave will start shoving into you.
- Keep in mind vitals spawn South/West or North/East and play around walls to deny them.
- With ult is when you can start looking to play more aggressively against Fiora. Your ult can be reacted to by Fiora W but the window is tight. So really, you're playing mind games with your ult and her W.
Garen
Fleet Footwork
Absolute Focus and Scorch
Adaptive Force
Sword start → Swifties → Tri Force
- Take only free or very favorable trades to stay above 70% health
- Garen isn't the one shot monster he was early last year, but if you're 70% hp he will one shot you with Q-flash-ignite-E-R
- As a little bonus/incentive Absolute Focus produces really good value in the early game
- Eventually he'll realize he's losing and try to all in...
- Good tech is to E on him right before he Qs you if you're worried about his E damage
- ...or proxy, if he's proxying on you, you've most likely already messed up. So, unless you have help, you should probably just let him do his thing
Gragas
Fleet Footwork
Conditioning and Overgrowth
D Shield → Swifties/Mercs → Tri Force
- Easy before first backs
- Then, hard until item
- Playable on item but have to respect more and play for farm
- Don't over force for trades, Gragas will out sustain you
- Get CS lead early and hold onto it to stay ahead in econ and be more useful in teamfights
Gwen
Fleet Footwork
Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight
Tenacity and Slow Resist
D Blade → Swifties → Tri Force → (Executioners) → Streaks
- Can play for level 1 prio
- If possible, play to deny Gwen melee access to the wave
- Gwen Q-E is her bread and butter in this lane, and the more stacks she has, the more it'll hurt
- Matchup becomes harder at level 6
- Now it's really important not to give Gwen a free situation where she can run you down a long lane
- Because of how Gnar Q works, you have a lot of room to play around Gwen W
- Until Gnar Q hit
- I.e. if Gwen is immune on the first pass, if her W ends Q could still hit
- You can throw out Q before her W ends, and hit her on the return
- A lot of Gwen players wont respect this, allowing you to get really nice poke
Illaoi
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
D Blade → Swifties → Tri Force
- Need to play for shove level 1
- Stand opposite of the Illoai on the wave and maintain aggro on the wave
- If Illoai has
- Notes on Items
- Consider heal cut, especially if ahead
- Illoai will just shred resistances, if you're ahead your best stats to continue winning are resistances, heal cut, armor shred, and/or move speed
- Example items to consider Black Cleaver, Sundered Sky, Blade of The Ruined King
- Illoai E
- If you're hit by E, often you'll just want to run away
- If you dodge E, often you can win trades
- Early game, if Illoai Es while you're on high health or without a tentacle nearby, it might vs wise to fight her rather than run
- Later game, be mindful if you have a spirit pulled, Illoai R will spawn an extra tentacle
Irelia
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plaiting and Unflinching
Adaptive Force/Movement Speed and Flat Health
D Blade → Bramble Vest → (Refillable) → Plated Steelcaps → Tri Force
- Start E.
- Contest pixel level 1.
- Irelia will often try to Q all three melees level 1 then Q onto you for her full passive. With E start, you can feel safe getting at least 2 of the 3 melees level 1 and then E on her head towards your tower when she Qs onto you. This will be a winning trade and get wave shoving into you.
- If Irelia has ignite...
- Do not drop below 70% HP on the first push into your tower. Even a 1 for 1 on a tower dive here can be very damaging in the long run.
- Don't sit on lots of gold, once you have enough for Bramble match her next reset to get it, even if you can't get Refillable.
- Dodge Irelia E.
- Play with Mega and JG.
Jax
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
D Blade → Swifties → Tri Force
- Fighting for prio early is very important in this lane. If Jax has shove you will lose trades, if you have shove you can look for poke. Play disciplined and you will most likely win.
- Be mindful of Jax passive and Jax Q
- Jax's Q cd is lower than your E
- Level 1 you can win prio no matter what Jax has
- Don't face check any of the bushes before wave
- Walk with first wave
- If Jax jumps on you, you'll win with Bone Plating and wave
- Be ready to ward first bush if he jumps on you then tried to drop minion aggro in it quickly
- After 6, be mindful of Jax R passive 3rd attack, he may try to initiate fights by jumping on you with it
Jayce
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plaiting and Unflinching
Flat Health
D Shield → Plated Steelcaps → Tri Force
- First goal of this lane is to survive the first shove and crash onto your tower
- Walk with first wave to ward first bush
- If he has Electrocute/Ignite only trade as fast as possible with an auto and Q then run
- This is to get the wave shoving into you, while utilizing Bone Plating to lose as little health as possible
- If Bone Plating is proced on level 1, you'll have it back up when the third wave is crashed onto the tower
- Don't take poke while he shoves in the first three waves
- If you have bone plating and 70%+ health on crash, he shouldn't be able to dive and kill you successfully
- Going 1 for 1 is not the worst, but still kind of bad
- Plated Steelcaps opens this lane a lot, trades can be won with solid understanding of Jayce's kit, Bone Plating, and spacing
- Jayce Q in both ranged and melee does AOE damage, don't stand on your backline minions and think you're safe
- Half jump backwards can be effective for winning extended trades when he jumps in, the key is to kite his knockback here while keeping him in your auto range
K'Sante
Fleet Footwork
Cash Back
D Blade → Swifties → Black Cleaver
- Play for prio then poke on the level 1
- K'Sante Q start has very solid shove, so if you're trying to hit him, he might out shove you
- K'Sante E start can actually win trades level 1 if you're playing too aggressive for poke
- Lane opens up a lot with Swifties
Kayle
Fleet Footwork
D Blade → (Boots) → Tri Force → Plated Steelcaps
- Pre 6, play for poke/denying CS while farming as best you can
- Post 6
- If Kayle has Lethal Tempo
- Play to bait out her ult with mega then disengage, her ult is much longer than a mega cycle
- Prioritize poke over small trades
- If Kayle has Fleet Footwork
- Prioritize small trades over poke
Kennen
Fleet Footwork
Second Wind
D Shield → Refillable → Mercs (or Swifties) → Tri Force
- Level 1, walk with wave
- Kennen does more DPS if you're in mini, but you out sustain
- Ideally, you're both playing the poke game while farming as best as possible
- After 6, don't get caught out below 60-70% health unless you have mega outplay
- Kennen is very good at forcing his way onto you if he thinks he can kill with ult rotation
Kled
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
D Blade → (Refillable) → Plated Steelcaps/Swifties → Tri Force
- Kled remount comes through super fast now, just be ware
- In general the idea is to knock him off in mini, then kill with mega lock down
Malphite
Fleet Footwork and Cut Down
Second Wind and Unflinching
D Shield start → Refillable → Phage/Null-Magic Mantle → Cleaver → Mercs/Swifties→ Steraks → Tri Force
Malphite and Irelia are the two Gnar counter-picks I see the most often.
- Play bushes or river level 1, don't tank a Q for free before first melees are getting low.
- First sequence (until first back):
- Play every Fleet Footwork auto until Malphite first back to abuse his mana.
- Bonus points if you're able to force him to use abilities for CSing.
- Don't allow yourself to get hit by anything but his Q. I.e., E out if he's going to be able to W or E you, and don't walk into range if you don't have E up.
- After first sequence, play safe until Black Cleaver.
- In general you can win on Mega timings, especially once you have Black Cleaver.
- A good Malphite might try to proxy on you and find good rotations onto your team early.
- Ping his rotations.
- Don't try to stop the proxy if you don't have help. Malphite will live a long time vs AD champs and has both move speed and hit ult to get out.
- (Typically) Don't try to follow. If you're away from a tower and Malphite just turns, you can easily lose.
- Mentally prepare yourself to flash Malphite ult when needed; it's more than possible from mid to max range if you're expecting it.
Mordekaiser
Fleet Footwork
D Blade → Swifties → Tri Force
- Pre 6, this lane is actually just free. Play to bait out his Q/E and lay down the harass.
- After 6, the only way you die is by being close to/in mini when he can ult you away from a tower.
Nasus
Conqueror with Legend: Haste
Biscuit Delivery
Adaptive and Tenacity
D Blade → Swifties → Black Cleaver (Tri first if you're far ahead)
- Play very good wave management early and you can usually bully your way into an early lead
- Be that off CS, plates, or kills, all that matters is that you get ahead in gold early and Nasus is denied a reasonable amount of CS.
- After 6, Nasus is a huge threat if he has ult
- Baiting out his ult in a position where you won't be punished too hard is a great way to make him useless for the next two minutes
- Lane assign away from the Nasus if possible in the mid game, he will start to win every trade in mid/late or if he got ahead early.
- On items
- Resistances aren't great vs Nasus and attack speed is heavily reduced by his W
- Ideally in the mid to late stages of the game you won't have to side vs Nasus, but if you do, and you think you can kill him, haste is a solid way to go
- Black Cleaver and Spear of Shojin are good options for fighting Nasus with mega
- Swifties over Plated Steelcaps to help with running away
Olaf
Fleet Footwork
D Blade → Swifties → Tri Force
I don't have much to say about this one, I don't see him often.
Ornn
Fleet Footwork
Cash Back and Biscuit Delivery
Adaptive Force
D Blade → Swifties → Phage → Tri Force/Black Cleaver
- You control this lane early.
- After level 6, with ult, Ornn has great setup for his JG and 1v1 kill pressure if you miss step.
- Stay healthy
- If Ornn got a lead early go Black Cleaver, otherwise Tri Force is fine
Pantheon
Fleet Footwork
D Shield → Refillable → Plated (or Swifties) → Tri Force
Panth doesn't have a combat ult, if you can survive to level 6, you win with Mega.
Quinn
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
D Shield → Refillable → Plated (or Swifties) → Tri Force
It's not hard to survive a lane into Quinn, but she can bully you off CS early and will have way more map impact before you're able to 1v1 her.
Renekton
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
D Blade → Refillable → Swifties (or Plated) → Tri Force
- Renekton is a deceptively strong champion in the early game
- His sustain is good with Q
- He has lots of ways to get onto you with Es and flash
- Renekton W
- Empowered it removes shields
- Can proc Press The Attack very quickly
- Longish CC
- Renekton E
- Renekton gets a second E charge if he dashes through an enemy
- Tether him at one and a quarter to one and a half his E range. This way if he Es, you'll be...
- Out of his immediate W or Q range
- Able to E away he uses another E to get onto you
- If you do this successfully, you'll be able to chase him down for free
- Renekton E cooldown is shorter than your E cooldown. If you don't have E, it's generally best not to risk his engaging range
- Between his E and flash, Rene has a lot of ways to potentially get onto you. Don't give him angles if you're below say ~60% health
- The take aways
- Stay healthy and tether his range
- Focus CS and not dying
- If Rene doesn't get ahead early, he'll be useless later
Riven
You may notice Sunfire is one of the items I might build first. You have Riven to thank for that.
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating and Unflinching
D Blade → Refillable → Sunfire RUSH, get the armor first
OR
D Blade → Refillable → Plated Steelcaps → Tri Force (Phage rush)
- Level 1
- Consider E start to make Riven damage the wave to start the shove into you if she has double combat sums
- If she doesn't have double combat sums, you can play for first wave prio and first crash
- If Riven flashes on you, flash out before taking excess damage
- Before first back
- Play Mega to crash waves and survive dives
- Notes on items...
- Start building Sunfire rush if you're even or ahead on first reset
- Start building move speed and Tri Force if behind
- Riven wins by default
- From even, you can win if...
- You have Mega from 70+% HP before either of you hit items
- You hit Sunfire before she hits item
- Riven wins extended lane when she has item vs Sunfire, especially when she has Ignite and/or Flash
- She has to use multiple Qs to gap close when you're fighting near full HP
- Objective
- If you're even by the end of laning phase, you're in a good position
- Especially if she didn't take teleport
- Riven wants to get a lead and start snowballing
Ryze
Fleet Footwork
Second Wind and Unflinching or Cash Back and Cosmic Insight/Biscuit Delivery
Adaptive Force
Take Biscuit Delivery if you expect to be getting ganked, otherwise take Cosmic Insight
D Blade → Tri Force
- Play for poke early if anything. Ryze can easily 100 to 0 you when you're mini in the early levels.
- You spike harder on first item.
Sett
Fleet Footwork
Bone plating
D Blade → Refillable → Swifties/Plated → Tri Force
- Similar to Darius
- Don't try to auto attack Sett until your range has grown a bit if he has E.
- The most dangerous portion of lane is the first few levels, especially if he has ignite.
- Stay healthy early, think about **Bone Plating** if you're going to fish for poke because if you get caught out by his E without it, you're gonna lose the trade.
- Like most juggernauts, if you're both low, they have huge outplay potential. Stay healthy and play for poke, the lane favorable enough that you'll come out ahead.
- You can wrestle prio by outpacing his shove, but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Sett is very strong in the early levels, but you will be stronger than Sett by the mid-late lane phase.
- One option with E start is to walk with wave to ward first bush, try to bait out his E, or if you get hit, just E away and take a small trade whilst getting the wave to shove into you
Shen
Grasp with Demolish and Bone Plating/Conditioning and Unflinching
Cash Back
- E start can mess you up, but if you E start too, you can mess him up in an extended trade
- I find the trick to dodging Shen E is to hover your E to the side, when you expect him to E, from at least medium range
- With Tiamat (eventually Stridebreaker) and Demolish, past level 6, you can out shove Shen so that when he ults or rests you can punish onto his turret.
- Just remember his ult for latter stages of the game
- Also if he has teleport, Shield Bash WILL DO a lot of damage with upgraded unleashed teleport
Singed
Fleet Footwork
Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight
D Shield → Refillable → Swifties → Tri Force
One of Gnar's biggest weaknesses is wave clear, so Singed naturally gets free reign to proxy. Don't stress about the proxy, just make sure you're pinging where he is for your team.
Sion
Fleet Footwork
Cash Back and Cosmic Insight/Biscuit Delivery
D Blade → Swifties → BORK/Tri Force → Tri Force
- Early, Sion can easily out damage you and out shove you, so just focus on the wave.
- The trick against Sion is to force him to decide whether to use his abilities on the wave or on you.
- His CDs early can be long, and he can have mana issues.
- Ideally, you bait out his Q in a manner that you'll dodge it and he won't hit the wave.
- Build BORK first if the enemy mid or JG does much of any HP stacking.
- Once you have BORK you can crush Sion if he's not super far ahead.
- On hit scales with attack speed, if BORK first, Tri Force next, not directly into Steraks
Sylas
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating and Unflinching
Flat Health
This is my ban. Even if he's the mid laner, he is a monster with Gnar ult.
Teemo
Fleet Footwork
Biscuit Delivery
D Shield → Refillable → Mercs → Tri Force
- Care level 1 Teemo cheese.
- Start sweeper and E
- The goal is to get the wave shoving into you
- The goal here is to not die. Go down CS, maybe a plate or two if you must.
- If you're even you have kill pressure with mega.
Tryndamere
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
D Blade → Plated Steelcaps → Tri Force/Stridebreaker
- Play to survive the early levels. If you go down early in this lane, it's Tryndamere' s game to lose, no longer your game to win.
- Tryndamere will out trade and out sustain, so focus on wave and possibly matching rotations.
- If Tryndamere has Hail of Blades, ALWAYS give push level 1, it is not worth tanking the Hail of Blades with your Bone Plating.
Udyr
Fleet Footwork
D Blade → Refillable → Swifties → Tri Force
Urgot
Fleet Footwork
Cosmic Insight
D Shield → Swifties (or Plated) → Tri Force
- Care level 1 Urgot E start. DO NOT try to start E and bounce on his head level 1, he will kill you if he has E.
- Stay healthy and farm well early, this matchup is all spacing and punishing his E and Q if misused.
- After 6, Urgot may try to E flash onto you, be ready to flash it.
Vayne
Fleet Footwork
Second Wind
D Shield → Refillable → Plated → Tri Force
I'd treat this lane like Kennen. Save your q for farming, don't try to out poke her, and only look for angles once you have ult.
Vladimir
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
D Shield → Refillable → Mercs/Swifties/Tri Force → Tri Force/Streaks
If you're playing vs ignite Vlad or enemy has a very aggressive jg, you need to stay as healthy as possible early. Vlad with ignite can straight up tower dive you level 3; if that's coming, make sure you have Bone Plating up or a mega timer.
You can kill Vladimir by baiting out his pool, then hitting him with Mega W. Typically this looks like, after level 6, with mega, jump on his head and just don't use any abilities right away to bait pool.
In an even lane, once Vladimir has his first item, he will most likely win the 1v1.
Volibear
Fleet Footwork
Conditioning and Unflinching or Nimbus Cloak and Celerity
Move Speed
D Blade → Refillable → Swifties → Tri Force
- Don't go Bone Plating, Volibear passive will just break it all the time for free
- Stay healthy, take free trades
- Play around move speed, you never want Voli on top of you if you can't kill him in a single mega rotation
- His Q makes him fast and cleanses slows
- His E slows
- Your Q slows a tiny bit
- Your W procs are your best friend
- E out when it looks like you messed up, and don't let him get into range if you have E down
- As long as your disciplined and have somewhat good kiting, this lane is fun and Gnar favored
Warwick
Fleet Footwork
D Blade → Swifties → Tri Force
When WW is low or you're low he is dangerous. Take Grasp poke when it's up but once he's below half, don't try to trade (beyond the grasp proc) with him if he has a wave.
Wukong
See Riven.
Wukong may start e and just e into you level 1. Give prio level 1. If he qs the wave you have a window for a w proc trade. It's important trades you take with him should last only as long as it takes you to get a w proc, otherwise he will have his q back to hit you.
Yasuo
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plaiting
D Shield → Refillable → Sunfire → Plated/Swifties
or
D Shield → Refillable → Plated/Swifties → Tri Force
- Yasuo is like Irelia, your wave might work against you a lot of the time.
- Wave manage such that he's stuck pushing into you early.
- Yasuo E
- Travels a fixed distance, at max range the animation ends right on top of your model.
- Stacks to deal double damage by 4th cast in short amount of time.
- Yasuo R, will not place him in tower range if you're knocked up on the edge. If you're at risk of getting hit by Q3, either play to dodge or be relatively far underneath the tower.
Yone
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plating
D Shield → Refillable → Plated → Tri Force
Yorick
Fleet Footwork with Absorb Life
Cash Back and Biscuit Delivery
Move Speed
D Blade → (Refillable) → Swifties → Stridebreaker → Executioners
Early game, you want to shove Yorick under tower, this keeps his ghouls occupied and forces him to split his attention between him CSing and you. The only kill pressure you have in this lane is if you're able to poke him down and then kill him with a single rotation in Mega with your ult.
Your GOAL is to survive. Yorick is a bad team fighting champ and if he doesn't hard win against you, you can match him as he crashes on the side. If you die at the wrong time early, he will take 3 plates minimum.
Zaahen
Fleet
Bone Plating and Unflinching
D Blade → Plated Steelcaps/Swifties → Tri Force
You have prio on 1st shove. Then
I find the trick to this matchup is playing for q poke before 6 and w proc poke after 6. Be patient with Zaahen when looking to make an ult play on him, his ult makes him unstoppable.
- Can play for prio on 1st wave
- Be weary of Zaahen E start, don't over commit into poke level 1
- Play safe after first crash onto his tower
- After level 3, trades will either consist of your Q poke, or Zaahen initiating with E and/or W
- If Zaahen E or W is down and you have E up, you can fish for trades
- In mega, be mindful his ult makes him unstoppable
- Don't W to start trade if he has ult
- Play mind games with ult as needed
- Chain CC properly for good burst
- Late game is super easy, just don't try to fight him in melee
Xin Zhao
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plaiting and Unflinching
D Blade → Steelcaps → Tri Force → Steraks
- If they take Hail of Blades, they can get w-q2-q3 off on you and cancel your jump if you try to jump away.
- Play a very safe early, Xin is a strong early game champ, if he doesn't get fed, you should be able to beat him by Tri with your mega
Gangplank
Fleet Footwork
Bone Plaiting
D Blade → Tri Force
- Can fight for prio level 1

Hey, I'm Wyvern, aspiring resident Gnar otp for NA.
I first hit diamond playing Irelia in 2023. I later picked up Gnar, who I first hit masters with in 2025 then grandmaster in 2026. Peak: GM ~650 LP, rank 908. At the time of writing, I'm just hanging around in high masters.
This guide is a work in progress. For the time being, the majority of the information is in the threats section, where I've done my best to give quality information on matchups.
Notes on Runes and Itemization
### Runes
1. When in doubt, run **Fleet Footwork** for your keystone. It's never bad, it just might not be the best.
2. I haven't done much experimenting with **Conqueror** since the ranged **Grasp** changes. If you have instances where you like taking **Conqueror**, lmk!
3. Alterations to the rune page will be listed per matchup in the "threats" section.
### Items
1. Always use your best judgment as to what might be the best items in your specific game. League is a dynamic game and what is the best item to build one game might be essentially useless in another game.
1. I don't say this to scare you. If you want a quick-and-dirty, one-size-fits-all recommendation, stick with building a **Tri Force** and **Streaks** first, every game.
2. Experiment and take notes. If you discover something that works really well, I wanna hear about it!
2. **Item** recommendations for early/mid game can be found per matchup in the "threats" section.
1. **Items** there are listed in order of game progression.
- Past **Tri Force** and/or **Steraks** items typically wont be listed, so use your best judgment for the later slots.
- I've provided some recommendations if you're truly lost.
2. Where slashes "/" are present, build what makes most sense **or multiple** of the **items.**
3. **Refillable Potions** typically aren't listed, but are often useful to pick up on the first few backs
4. Items in (parentheses) are optional

# Team Fighting
You play Gnar for this. You're a jack-of-all-trades; your team fighting is good and flexible. The trade off is such: you have to learn how to play multiple styles of fighting, and you're not going to be better than most other champs when it comes to specific strengths. If you need to think of Gnar having a specific strength in team fighting, your crowd control in mega is phenomenal for following up on engages and peeling the enemy off your backline. Really consider how you would expect a team fight to play out in your given game and play accordingly. Of course, you'll often be mini, and that's ok. Don't int an engage because your mega is running out, often times the threat of mega and the subsequent space you'll gain is enough of a contribution. Plus, if you jump in on zero mega, you'll just be mini Gnar in the middle of three to five people. That's death.
In mini, you'll generally focus on poke, hitting the front line, and holding space (ideally, with the threat of mega).
### Mega Management
Ideally for objective fights you want to hit a mega about a minute to 40 seconds before the objective is up. Maybe add a bit of time if your mega is going to be critical for taking space with your team. Keep this in mind when situating your wave and thinking about lane assignments. Example: 30 seconds before dragon, there's a huge top wave about to crash on your turret. It may be best to encourage your mid or adc to grab that wave as opposed to getting it yourself, hitting mega and then being tired immediately before or during the team fight.
# Game Plan
### Early Levels
95% of the time, looking for kills pre-6 is bait. Getting chunked out is bad as your mega timings cannot be relied on for big sustain and outplay potential. That doesn't mean you should play for low interaction early. Small trades on your opponent while staying healthy and maintaining good cs will protect you from enemy ganks/dives and help accelerate you relative to your opponent top laner. A winning early game might involve zero kills, but a little cs advantage (maybe exp too) will go a huge distance in the latter laning phase.
### Post-level 6
Now is when Gnar is unlocked in many of his matchups. Now, mega will come up faster, your auto attack range in mini has scaled a bit, and you probably have boots. You can start to punish plenty of melee matchups in a more similar manner to your ranged counter parts, but you have the added benefit of a more reliable mega. Your ult gives you huge outplay potential and allows for consistent high damage combos. Still, in some matchups you may not have kill threat until your first item.
Situationally, it is important to note you may see spike on levels 4 or 5 in plenty of lanes. Often, this is really apparent vs juggernauts (Morde, Garen, etc...).
### Mid-game
Split pushing is always game/matchup dependent. Either way, you'll most likely want to stay on side until you hit your second item spike, in particular **Steraks**. Item spikes in league are always a big deal but I would consider Gnar on the more extreme end of item reliance. Your target in every game is to hit the two items plus boots spike by the third dragon fight (hopefully) or Atakhan (always). This is your biggest time to shine on Gnar. You could be completely even or slightly losing to your opponent, if you play the 20 to 30 minute range well, you'll have a huge impact on the game outcome.
### Late Game
### Overview
- Early Levels
- **GOOD CS
- Stay healthy
- Small chunks on opponent
- Post-6
- **GOOD CS
- Maybe look for plays
- Mid-game
- **GOOD CS
- Side line
- Consider actual split pushing if it makes sense
- Team fight
- Especially on item spikes, but you have to be able to fight Atakhan either way
- Late Game
- **Don't die please
- Prioritize team fighting over split pushing almost always
