Information about the author as well as Jax

Hello, I'm PH45, and this is my Jax Guide.

My real name is Patrik, but you can call me either way. I am a long time League of Legends player (started back in Season 1). I'm a top lane main, and I picked up Jax as my main champion back in Season 5 and have played him mostly ever since. I reached Diamond 5 in Season 7 and am currently sitting in Diamond 5. I have over 1 million mastery points on Jax when adding up all of my accounts so I would say I have mastered him quite well.

Now on to Jax. Jax is a bruiser style champion, who can really be very diverse with his builds and playstyles. You can play him as a splitpusher and duel almost anyone late game, or you can build him more tanky and peel for your carries, or just go all out and build him as a burster (although not recommended most of the time). Jax is a great champion to pickup as he isn't necessarily the most complex champion mechanics wise, but rather requires matchup knowledge. Knowing where to be and what to do as Jax is the key to utilizing him to his fullest potential.

Summoner spells


Flash: Pretty normally taken summoner spell. Some like Ghost but I much more prefer Flash for capability of getting over walls or quickly getting in range with Leap Strike.

Ignite: Good for lanes you want to go aggressive on. Can easily win you the game if you put the enemy laner enough far behind. It is also extremely good against champions with a lot of healing like Dr. Mundo, Vladimir, Zac and even Aatrox.

Teleport: My preferred second summoner spell. Now the cooldown was nerfed to 6 minutes so it can be a bit harsh to take tp now but I think it's still the best second summoner for Jax Most of the time it enables you to splitpush and teleport to teamfights if you aren't near the fight when it breaks out. It can also help you in tough matchups where you have to back a lot early.

Jax is a very strong fighter once he picks up a couple items, and in late game he can be a monster in the right hands.

Runes



So as we all know Riot introduced Runes Reforged last year in the Pre-Season. Overall it is a smoother system than the previous as you don't have to spend loads of IP to get Runes and so on.


This is the setup I run after the sorcery nerfs. As the keystone of choice I have picked Conqueror, other choice is Press the Attack. Conqueror is a great rune choice for Jax. It gives you more strength in lane for fighting and is a great choice if you want to do split pushing as it allows you to duel people more easily. If you are planning on grouping more then Press the Attack is a viable choice as well but overall I think Conqueror is the better keystone right now.


Press the Attack sort of replaces the previous best keystone for Jax which was Fervor of Battle . It gives you more damage towards the target you have attacked with 3 consecutive basic attacks and it also increases damage to them from all sources for 6 seconds. Jax can pretty reliably proc Press the Attack and gets great benefit from using it, but I think Conqueror is the better keystone on top lane right now, Press the Attack is better suited for jungling.

Next one on the list is Triumph. It replaced Dangerous Game and can save you in a clutch situation or just grant you some HP back in a intense teamfight.

Next are the Legend tier runes, from which I have picked either Legend: Alacrity or Legend: Tenacity. This choice you should alter depending on your match. If your opponents have a lot of CC or lockdown you are afraid of pickup the tenacity one. If you aren't afraid of that then you can take the Alacrity one and gain permanent attack speed with it, which we know Jax benefits from pretty well.

Lastly from the Precision tree we have Coup de Grace. I feel this will get most reliable use when you are playing Jax. Squishy targets melt faster and when you get tanks to lower HP they start melting as well. If your opponents have many targets who you know will build more HP than you then Cut Down might be a solid choice as well.


Right now I'm running Inspiration as the secondary tree. We take Magical Footwear cause it's free boots right? That's essentially free 300g + the bit of extra movement speed on them is a nice addition. The second rune is Time Warp Tonic. I ignored this rune for a long time but now after using it I find it actually pretty good. Buying Corrupting Potion as starting item combined with this gives you longer potions, which means more healing and also more time to do the damage with it. You also get extra movespeed while using a potion so that is also nice.

For the second tree, I previously used Celerity and Scorch, as they felt pretty solid especially on lanes I wanted to go aggressive early on. They got nerfed (again in 8.16) but they still seem fine imo. The bit of extra damage helps with early trading and finishing off kills, which help you snowball and so on. You can actually proc Scorch more often now thanks to the cooldown being halved so it's essentially the same rune if you proc it twice. From Sorcery you can take Nullifying Orb for heavy AP lanes like Swain, Kennen, Heimerdinger etc as it helps you a lot since it's like a mini Hexdrinker. Also Nimbus Cloak can be fun to try in some cases as it can score you that kill that is just out of reach.

If you want to go defensive runes then take the Resolve tree. For the first rune I would probably Bone Plating. It's a new addition and it helps you in lane with your trades. After it procs it reduces the damage your opponents next 3 attacks/abilities deal to you by 20-50 depending on your level (works only for 1 enemy at a time).

Secondly go either Second Wind into poke lanes like Pantheon and Gnar or take Chrysalis for extra HP for laning and once you get a couple takedowns it transforms into extra damage.


Unflinching sort of feels niche to me, but if you manage to do good Teleport ganks then this will help if the person you are ganking has slowing abilitys and so on or if you Flash into the opponents in teamfights this rune will enchance your ability to stick to them.



Other choice for the primary rune tree is to take Inspiration and grab Kleptomancy. It has been a strong keystone for a while now and Jax can pretty easily proc it in lane with his Empower or Leap Strike. It helps those lanes where you need to scale faster while you won't have the chance to kill your opponent that often (vs tanks etc). After that you take Perfect Timing, Future's Market and lastly Cosmic Insight. I most of the time still like to run Press the Attack though but occasionally I take this.

Ability Explanation



  • Relentless Assault (Passive): Jax gains bonus attack speed for 2.5 seconds every time he lands a basic attack, stacking up to 8 times. This falls off one stack at a time. To utilize this passive in lane auto attack minions as much as you can before engaging the enemy so you have more attack speed to fight with.
  • Leap Strike (Q): Jax leaps to targeted enemy while dealing physical damage to the target. It can also be used to jump on wards, plants, Thresh lanterns etc. If you use your W before using Q the W's damage will be applied on top of your Q's damage.
  • Empower (W): Jax's next basic attack or Leap Strike within 10 seconds deals bonus magic damage. It is also an autoattack reset so after your auto attack has landed activate this for and immediate autoattack. They also added 50 more range on this ability in the patch 7.12 which is really nice since it makes this ability easier to land on a running opponent.
  • Counter Strike (E): When activated the first time Jax will block all incoming auto attacks for 2 seconds aswell as will take 25% reduced damage from all area of effect abilities. At the end of the duration or when reactivated Jax stuns nearby enemies for 1 second and deals physical damage to them, increased by 20% for each attack dodged, up to a 100% increase. This is the key to winning melee matchups at level 1. Just auto minions for your passive and then auto the enemy while near his minion wave so your E's damage increases.
  • Grandmaster's Might (R): It's passive enables Jax to deal bonus magic damage on every third basic attack within 2.5 seconds of each other. When activated Jax gains bonus armor and bonus magic resistance for 8 seconds. Once you hit level 6 in lane auto minions twice and then Q onto your enemy and autoattack and follow with immediate W for a good amount of burst.

Skill Sequence

You want to be taking points on Grandmaster's Might whenever possible. Out of the basic skills you want to max Empower most of the time for maximum DPS. In some ranged matchups maxing Leap Strike might be the better choice, against champs like Gangplank, Kayle, Gnar and so on. Maxing Counter Strike isn't worth in my opinion, as you get much more out of maxing Empower and Leap Strike.

Items


While playing Jax keep in mind you shouldn't stick to only one build, build depending on matchup and your needs.

Titanic Hydra, the god of wave clearing
This item is extremely efficient when looking at it's stats. It gives Jax HP which is always good especially early on, some damage and most importantly it improves Jax's wave clear immensively.
Trinity force, never skipperino
Maybe the most important item for Jax. It gives Jax everything he can want. It has nice boost on his attack speed, some damage, movement speed, but most importantly it gives him the Sheen proc that makes Jax deal so much damage in short bursts.
Hextech gunblade, the endless sustain
This item gives lots of healing and some nice burst to kill squishies aswell as let you live longer in fights since it heals you for 15% of all damage you deal.
Blade of the ruined king, % health damage is good
This item is a good option if the opposing team has multiple tanky champs, or if your lane opponent is hard to stick with and you need some sustain as well (for example Singed)
It also gives you some attack speed which is always a nice stat on Jax.
Spirit Visage, healing improver
This item works extremely well with Hextech Gunblade as it improves it's already good healing. It was kind of nerfed in the patch 9.10 but I still think it's relatively good. It is also good against AP poke lanes since the repice item Spectre's Cowl grants you more regeneration after you have been damaged by enemy champion. It also gives nice amount of MR.
Essence Reaver, R,Q,Q
It can be a fun and effective item, but it can be a hit or miss in some cases. Anyways though I've grown to like it and build it most of the time simply cause I play quite aggressively as Jax. Essence Reaver allows you to spam your abilities after activating your Grandmaster's Might and just stick on to your opponents with the constant Leap Strikes and Counter Strikes. The CDR and AD are also a nice stat to have.
Randuin's Omen, death to ADC's
The build path got updated again and now it's again a sensible way to build it. I usually pick up Warden's Mail first and then build it onwards from there. Helps extremely well in auto-attack oriented matchups and later on it's slowing effect is nice in teamfights and it also slows enemies attack speed when they hit you so it lessens the enemy DPS.
Ninja tabi
Good for autoattack reliant matchups and also vs fed ADC's etc. Most of the time I go these boots unless the enemy comp has heavy CC which can be an issue. Late game it isn't as noticeable but it's still quite good.
Mercury's treads, the option for CC
Pretty self-explanatory, get this if the enemy laner or the whole enemy comp has a lot of CC as it can shut you down pretty well.
Guardian Angel, Aatrox passive for everyone
The item got a slight change, now builds out of a B. F. Sword and a Cloth Armor, it can be somewhat awkward to build as Jax doesn't need the huge AD you get from B. F. Sword but it's a efficient buy if you are getting focused a lot or you are the frontline of your team. If you have extra gold in late game and this items passive is down sell it and switch it for something else as the pure stats aren't worthwhile the wait.

Gargoyle Stoneplate, time to jump in to the fight
I don't build this item too often, but when I do damn does it feel good to jump in to the fight and just tanking damage for a long time. Stone Skin passive gives you +40 armor and mr if there are 3 or more opponents near you, so you will just have a lot of extra resistance then, then when you activate it you get extra hp also. You will lose 60% of your damage for 4 seconds but thats a worthy trade off imo, as if you build this item and you go in to a big fight you aren't looking to oneshot anyone at that time, rather soak up damage and after withering the opponents then killing them. Very good buy if your team lacks frontline or you just need to survive longer in fights.
Thornmail, the way to cripple an AD comp
This item seems to be really good in some cases now. If the opposing team has lot's of healing champions or just a fed AD champ with lifesteal this is the perfect item.
Thornmail now applies Grievous wound which helps killing those pesky healing champs much easier. Also it get's the cold steel passive which is nice.
Iceborn Gauntlet, Sheen with CC
I don't really like to build this item ever, but it gives you armor, sheen proc and a small slow so you can stick to people. I wouldn't recommend building it over Trinity Force but Jax is so versatile with his builds you can make this item work on him since it has a Sheen proc.
Sterak's Gage, Tenacity and shields
Sterak's Gage actually got changed in the 7.20 patch. Now the build recipe is a bit different and the shield acts different. It now gives a shield and +30% tenacity, which is a good stat on Jax. Only thing you need to keep in mind is that the shield doesn't pop every time, so this item is good if you are getting bursted a lot in fights and you need to also negate some CC when chasing down your opponents. This item isn't a must buy every game but it got a lot better than before.

Matchups section


When facing Cho'Gath in lane, pay attention to his position when he uses Vorpal Spikes. Don't get hit by the spikes to avoid the slow and if he fights you with them make sure to dodge the damage with your Counter Strike. Key here is to dodge his Rupture and just all in him after that since he loses to you after that unless you are miles behind him (which shouldn't happen). Just be careful if you are low HP as he can quickly delete you with his Feast. Overall one of the easiest matchups for Jax.


Volibear shouldn't be too big of an issue to you. He can be hard to finish off though since his Majestic Roar knocks back champions now and also his passive Chosen of the Storm can save him from death. Your Counter Strike blocks his Rolling Thunder so make sure to make good use of that in lane. Care of his Frenzy's damage though as it can hurt a lot when you are low HP.


While playing against Illaoi it's important to dodge her Test of Spirit. After she misses that you are free to trade with her as she misses a good portion of her damage when she can't utilize the spirit from it. If she ults and you know you can't finish her at that moment Q away as she heals for a good amount when she deals damage in her ult. If you are having trouble with her healing buy Bramble Vest.


Dr. Mundo can become quite hard to kill after he gets a few items. Careful of his cleavers as they hurt a lot and slow you down a bunch. When he activates his Masochism be sure to dodge the autoattacks with your Counter Strike. Blade of the Ruined King works in this matchup quite well thanks to the movement speed steal and %health damage.

He has strong early damage thanks to his passive enhanced autoattacks. Make sure to Counter Strike but also if you want to kill him save your Leap Strike when he E+Q's away. If you can't kill him and he ults you just wardhop out of his ult. Ninja Tabi is an essential item in this matchup.

Kled can be a pretty annoying champ to deal with but imo Jax has a slight edge on this lane. You can wait for him to use his Violent Tendencies on minions and then engage, but don't Leap Strike him right away as he will just use his E to get away. After he has de-mounted you can Leap Strike onto him and possibly kill him. Just don't get baited as he get's his courage up fast when he deals damage to champions.

Should be a pretty straight forward matchup for Jax. Don't get hit by too many Steel Tempests early and try to fight him when there aren't many creeps for him to dash around. If he can dash around make sure to use your Counter Strike only if you have Leap Strike. After 6 you should be able to win him pretty easily especially when you have items like Phage and Sheen. Ninja Tabi are also good buy on this lane.

Pretty easy matchup. When he charges his Decimating Smash just Leap Strike on him and run behind him and you should win the trade pretty much. Sion just wants to shove and poke you in lane rather than all in so if he tries to poke you just Leap Strike and beat him up. As the game progresses he gets tankier but he shouldn't be an issue other than the CC machine he is in teamfights. Avoid walking near bushes he enters in lane as the Q windup animation doesn't show outside bushes.

A good Darius can make the lane difficult. Important thing is to block his W with your E and don't let him get his passive to 5 stacks on you. Take small trades and back off, since extended fights give Darius more time to get his passive stacks on you. If you can't run out of his Q circle Q on him so you will be in the inner ring, denying him his heal and the Hemorrhage stack. You outscale him quite well so just don't let him get ahead and you should win him. Early Ninja Tabi and Bramble Vest also help quite a lot in this matchup.

This has two important things: In trades dodging Yorick's Last Rites denies him a lot of damage, especially after he has gotten his Sheen that negates a lot of his potential. Second thing is you need to dodge his Mourning Mist. If he misses this or you are able to dodge it you should win the trade since your Counter Strike blocks his Last Rites, that leaves him very little to do damage with. If he hits you with it though that chunks you quite a lot. You can jump out of his Dark Procession with your Leap Strike, or just auto + Empower. When you get Trinity Force just play around the key parts of the matchup and he should be a pretty easy kill.

This matchup is basically a skill matchup. It can go both ways and really just depends who outplays who. Fiora's passive Duelist's Dance can give Vitals to pretty awkward spots to you which can force you to back off out of its range to reset it. Maybe the most important thing in this matchup is the Counter Strike Riposte fight, are you able to land it or will she Riposte it. Ninja Tabi is a great item to rush in this matchup and also if you want to keep her from healing too much Bramble Vest is your friend. Just keep track of her vital positions, and try to sidestep her Riposte to not get stunned. Also never just jump on her with your Counter Strike winding up as this will give her the opportunity to stun you easily and ultimately screw you hard. Wait for your chance and all in her once she makes a grave mistake, like missing her Riposte.

This lane shouldn't give too much trouble to be honest. Early on he will just Bramble Smash you if you try to stun him with Counter Strike. Later on he will try to dodge it with Twisted Advance. Careful around bushes since when he throws a sapling there they will hurt much more if they hit you. If he Q's you away wait out the slow before jumping on him or your Q is a wasted effort.

He shouldn't have much kill pressure on you but the huge amount of CC he has is a nice way of setting you up for a gank so be vary of that and ward around. You pretty much have to all in him since he can just sustain back up with his passive Sap Magic.

This lane can be pretty annoying cause of Wither and his passive Soul Eater. At level 1 it's a free trade for you though since your Counter Strike blocks his Siphoning Strike. But to be honest you can abuse Nasus's weak early game by getting your jungler to gank him or straight up all-in him at level 2. If he has no summoners he is extremely weak pre-6 and even diveable if your jungler plays it right. Most of the time you want to run away if he Withers you as he can actually just run away from your auto attack range since the slow is so ridiculous, after it wears out you are free to Leap Strike in and beat him up. Later on items like Quicksilver Sash and Bramble Vest are good items to deny him. He outscales you later on but tbh you can still win fights vs him as he is very kiteable.

Rarely seen on top lane anymore. If you come across him however it's quite straight forward. He has a lot of CC so be vary of jungle ganks but other than that he shouldn't be able to solo kill you. You can block his Titan's Wrath extra auto damage with your Counter Strike and also deny him the root on his Staggering Blow. If he uses Riptide wait for the slow to end before jumping on him. If someone gets ulted by him don't stand between them and the ult so you don't get knocked up.

Olaf will be a bit annoying as he will just heal up the damage you do with Vicious Strikes. He also chunks you quite a lot with Reckless Swing so if he pushes you a lot just farm under tower and wait for your powerspikes. Remember that his ult Ragnarok ignores CC so be vary of that as he is quite tricky to escape if he lands his Undertows. You outscale him pretty well though so just buy Ninja Tabi and outscale him if you can't seem to win lane vs him. Bramble Vest also helps with his healing.

A bit of a difficult matchup as she is quite tanky especially with her free shield. She also actually deals quite a lot of damage so be vary if you are low HP. If she misses her stun punish her for that but be careful as she can block your Leap Strike with Steadfast Presence. Go the usual build routes of Trinity Force and Titanic Hydra]] and you should be good to go, if not then get Blade of the Ruined King to chase her down as she is quite mobile also.

Most people think Jax counters Tryndamere but that isn't the case. If he has stacked fury in lane you need to back off, especially early as if he lands some lucky crits that can pretty much win the lane for him. Usually if he comes to engage you use your Counter Strike and he just Spinning Slashes away. You need to trade with him early and deny him the stacking of Rage or he has an advantage. At level 1 don't initate a fight with him, just deny him the rage stacks and don't get poked by him as he will just do the scenario I just described. When he uses Undying Rage you need to either kite him or if you are healthy enough then you can stick around and kill him but most of the time kite him until it's over. AP Tryndamere is also becoming very strong now thanks to the Spinning Slash CD being only 3.85 at max rank with 45% CDR so if you want to fight him you pretty much need Essence Reaver as he will just constantly chase you with his E otherwise.

This matchup can be difficult as Vladimir will just outsustain you in lane, you need to all in him if you want to kill him. Back off when his Transfusion bar is red as it will deal quite a bit of damage. Max Leap Strike in this matchup to catch up to him and be smart about using your Counter Strike as he will just Sanguine Pool whenever you try to stun him. Early game you can play agro as the cooldown on the pool at rank 1 is 28 seconds. Just remember to back off when he has red bar on Transfusion. Items like Hexdrinker and Spectre's Cowl can help in this matchup if you are having trouble.

Not played much in the top lane anymore (thank god) but if you come across one it is a really annoying lane. She will just poke you down and if you jump on her she will just Condemn you away. Max Leap Strike and try to walk up to make her use Condemn after she uses it Leap Strike in and beat her up. Just try to save your Counter Strike for that as Silver Bolts really hurt. Items like Doran's Shield and Ninja Tabi help this matchup a lot.

Another hard lane. Level 1 you can trade with him with Counter Strike but try not to stand too much in his Poison Trail. Also save your Leap Strike in this matchup for when Singed has used his Fling. His Mega Adhesive will deny you your Leap Strike so don't spend too much time standing in it. Poke him down with Empower in lane as it makes your attack range longer. If you have trouble chasing him down get Blade of the Ruined King but it isn't necessary in this matchup.

Shouldn't be an issue but he deals quite a lot of damage. Make sure to dodge his Crushing Blow with Counter Strike and if he uses Decoy stop your Counter Strike immediatly to see where he is as it deals damage to him. Ninja Tabi is an important buy in this lane. He will be building lethality so be careful of his burst, get armor and careful in teamfights as his Cyclone can turn the tides pretty quick.

She will just hardpush the lane with her Righteous Fury, max Leap Strike to be able to chase him as he will just slow you down with Reckoning and speed herself up with Divine Blessing. Make sure to fight her as her Righteous Fury is ending and be ready to chase her down as she will just slow you and speed herself up to wait her E to come back up.

Gangplank will try to poke you down in lane with his Parrrley, so start either Doran's Shield or Corrupting Potion. I like to max Leap Strike in this matchup to constantly be able to jump on him in case he wastes his Remove Scurvy for a heal etc. Make sure to destroy his Powder Kegs yourself so he doesn't get the slow on you you and deal the ridiculous damage they start dealing after he get's Sheen. GP's early levels are pretty bad so that's the time when you can push him around, once he loses lane early you can keep diving him especially with junglers help and just make his live hell.

Irelia used to be stupid strong once the rework came out but after they nerfed her the lane became much more bearable. Good Irelia's can make you have a hard time but I haven't had too much trouble with her ever since I stopped banning her. Just make sure to move constantly and actively dodge her Flawless Duet. She can be hard to chase down in a minion wave thanks to her Bladesurge. When she uses Vanguard's Edge try not to hit the outer edge unless she is escaping you since it will disarm you for 1.5 seconds which can quickly turn the tide of the fight.

Rare sight in top lane anymore, but when picked she can be annoying to deal with. She has ranged poke and if you jump on her she will just use her Ring of Frost and Glacial Path to safety. This is why you max Leap Strike to try to keep up with her, and also build Hexdrinker or Spectre's Cowl to negate some of the poke she deals. If you want to fight her make sure to wait for her to use Glacial Path and stun her when she uses her Ring of Frost on you. Quicksilver Sash can be a helpful item later on as Lissandra brings a lot of CC to her team which can prevent you from doing your job in teamfights.

Renekton is a lane bully, but Jax can actually beat Renekton if played correctly. Renekton has the advantage that he has sustain with Cull the Meek, which makes it hard for Jax to stay in lane longer since Jax lacks built-in sustain. Try to not fight Renekton when he has full rage bar as it will empower his abilities. If he however wastes it on Ruthless Predator just block it with Counter Strike and proceed to all-in him. Remember to save Leap Strike for when he has used his Slice and Dice, otherwise he will just dash away from you, that's why you never Leap Strike onto Renekton while having Counter Strike up as it will just go to waste. Ninja Tabi is an important buy in this matchup.

Very skill based matchup. Riven will most of the time bait you into using Counter Strike, then she will just stun you and dash away before you are able to stun her, which after she goes back in on you. Riven is extremely weak when she has her cooldowns so make use of that. She will also just try to poke you down by jumping in and auto + Ki Burst and then falling back. If she however wastes her stun make sure to punish her. Ninja Tabi again if your friend in this matchup and after level 6 you can start autoing creeps twice, then using your Leap Strike onto Riven and auto + Empowering her, she will stun you after that but if she can't react fast enough you will chunk her quite a bit. Just be careful when she hit's 6 as she has incredible burst when you are low HP with her Blade of the Exile.


Shen can be difficult to kill early, be careful as he can deal quite a lot of damage early. Make sure to not take a trade with his Twilight Assault empowered basic attacks + Grasp of the Undying as that will chunk you quite a lot. Thankfully Counter Strike blocks most of his damage so play around that. After you get Trinity Force you should be able to all in him. Ninja Tabi is a great buy as most of Shen's damage comes from his autoattacks. Just be careful as he can setup ganks quite well with his Shadow Dash and also make sure to not get taunted under tower as it can be fatal. If you see Shen channeling his Stand United in the middle of the lane make sure to interrupt it as it can win the fight for your team.

Your Counter Strike blocks his Chomp which takes away a lot of his burst, but more important in this matchup is to ult after he has ulted, if you ult before he will just steal your resistances you gain from ult. He can also interrupt your Leap Strike with Pillar of Ice so be careful of that. If he ults you, you need to think can you kill him or not. If not then leap away, or if you are sure you can kill him then just stick around and beat him up. Trundle likes to all in so you pretty much just win small trades by denying his Chomp with Counter Strike and using your Empower. Do that a couple times to chunk him down and then just kill him afterwards.

Haven't had any issues with this matchup so far. Just make sure to block his autoattack if you get hit by Bellows Breath as it will deal more damage than normal and also cc you a bit. Other than that dodge his Searing Charge stun, which means don't stand near walls or his Volcanic Rupture. You can also make Ornn miss his second activation of Call of the Forge God by stunning him when the ult is near him. He can setup ganks well but thats about it. At level 1 just do your usual Counter Strike trade with him and you should be able to kill him pretty fast in the following levels. After you get Trinity Force you just beat him up hard.

In this matchup you have to bait her Hookshot before all-inning her as she will just hook away from you when you pop your Counter Strike, if she is hooking into you activate Counter Strike before she lands to avoid being bursted by her Precision Protocol, after she has blown her hook just smack her down. In lane pop her passive shield and after it has ran off then jump in to trade again. She will have an early advantage with Tactical Sweep as she can sustain with it while Jax lacks built-in sustain]].

Galio wants to poke you down with his Winds of War. When fighting Galio don't use your Counter Strike immediatly as he can run away from the range by taunting and slowing you down with his Shield of Durand. After he has blown his damage then you can use your Counter Strike and Leap Strike onto him and beat him up. He also lacks a powerspike at level 6 for laning as he can use his ulti only when targeting teammates. That means he will most likely want to roam near mid etc so either push the lane then to keep him in lane or push it and the tower down after he has roamed, of course making sure your fellow laners know he is missing. Mercury's Treads help a lot in this matchup.

The reworked Aatrox is a lane bully, especially to melees. He works as juggernaut now and he is actually pretty oppressive vs melees. Important thing in this matchup is to dodge his key points of his Q. Trade while he uses the first 2 procs and then quickly jump out before the 3rd one lands. He heals everything back up though over time pretty quick so junglers help is appriciated. Tabi and bramble are good items to get. Late game you outscale. If he misses his Infernal Chains you can try to all in him. Just dance around his Q procs as they chunk you a lot.

Playing vs Quinn is really annoying, she has ranged poke, a blind, a dash which interrupts your Leap Strike and a lot of burst. Only window for you to trade with her is really after she has used Vault as otherwise she will just use it to disengage you. Jump on her and Counter Strike and beat her up. Make sure to block her Harrier procs as they hurt quite a lot. Be safe and farm up until you are sure you can kill her as Quinn snowballs extremely hard and she will run most of the time Ignite which will make it even easier to land a kill on you. Outside her summoners she doesn't have too many escapes though so try to get your jungler to help. Build Ninja Tabi in this matchup.

Another annoying lane, Rumble deals a lot of damage early and will in most cases just outrade you. When he overheats then you can trade with him if you have Counter Strike up. Otherwise don't jump on him. Hexdrinker and Mercury's Treads help in this matchup. A neat trick is to go into him when he is high on heat as he can't blow all his abilities onto you and once he overheats he is reliant to auto attacks which you block with Counter Strike.

The reworked Akali can prove to be quite annoying. She has built-in sustain with her Five Point Strike although not too high, and also she can pretty much avoid your all damage with Twilight Shroud and just poke you down while it is active. Your chance to kill her is when it is down as she will run out of energy quite fast without it as her energy cost on Five Point Strike is quite high. If you are low HP at your tower don't stay as she has easy time diving you thanks to her Twilight Shroud. Her Perfect Execution's second proc also deals quite a lot of damage so she can definitely burst you quite fast. You can block her Assassin's Mark proc with your Counter Strike so keep that in mind when she is coming to trade with you. Chip her down and try to deny her from getting Assassin's Mark procs on you.

Laning vs tanks

So the meta is somewhat shifting back to tank meta with champions like Cho'Gath and Maokai being extremely strong. Some can find certain tank matchups hard for Jax, but most of them are pretty manageable. If you face a tank in top lane just do what you usually do, farm and trade with them if the opportunity is good, and kill them if they make dumb mistakes. However when they get to a certain point of tankiness it becomes hard to kill them. In this case just buy Tiamat like usual and shove them to their tower while warding around so you don't get ganked. This gives them 2 options, either Teleport to help their team in fights and lose the top lane tower or stay in lane to clear waves while your team fights the opposing team without their tank/cc machine.

Splitpushing



Splitpushing is a good way of pressuring the enemy team. Jax excells at it for multiple reasons:

His passive gives him more attack speed and he can take turrets down pretty fast after he get's Sheen. You just auto-attack and right as the attack has landed you use Empower for the auto attack reset and at the same time you get a Sheen proc. Also having Titanic Hydra helps splitpushing as your waveclear improves and it also gives you an autoattack reset.

Jax is also a strong splitpusher since he can duel pretty much anyone in the later points of the game and if you are ahead splitpushing is a great way of giving the enemy team pressure around the map.

Also thanks to his mobility with Leap Strike, Jax can escape sticky situations with his ward hop mechanic which makes him somewhat slippery as he can jump over walls.


When to splitpush?




When splitpushing you are essentially leaving your team 4v5, so your team needs to be aware of what you are doing. The idea of splitpushing is to either attract attention to you, so the opponents send 1-2 or more champions to deal with you which leaves your team free to take objectives with the overpower they have. The other case is that the enemy leave you unnoticed and try to take down your team, in which case your team needs to be aware of the risk and back off before it's too late. When this happens you push the lane you are splitting as hard as you can as you can get surprisingly fast multiple towers down from a lane.


When splitpushing vision is a really important thing. Try to have vision around the area you are pushing so you know when to back off if the opponents try to gank you from the fog of war. Also keep an eye on the minimap to see how many of your opponents are visible, and where they are. Think of who you can solokill and who you can't, who you can possibly 1v2 etc.


If you have Teleport while splitpushing you can also consider Teleporting into teamfights. If your team can hold on the fight while your TP is channeling you can win the teamfight with the element of surprise if the opponents first thought it will be a 5v4 fight for them. Before you tp consider which option gives your team the most advantage. If the fight is already lost pretty hard, push as much as you can and back, remember to keep vision on objectives like Baron Nashor and Dragon depending on the lane you are pushing since if the opponents kill your team they are likely to do one of these objectives if possible.

Some Jax tricks

At level 1 you can cheese your opponent (easier vs melee champs) with having Counter Strike up, going to auto them in their minion wave, after you have attacked and minions turn aggro on you activate your Counter Strike and keep autoattacking your opponent if you can stay in range. If done correctly you should chunk your opponent for a good hefty amount of damage and force them to pop a potion or in general just back off.

When you reach 6 a common thing to do is auto minions twice, then Leap Strike on to your opponent, auto them and immediatly follow with Empower. This combo will do good amount of damage as your Grandmaster's Might 3rd proc + Empower do quite a lot of damage in a short burst.

You can also cancel your autoattack animation with your Counter Strike. When the you have activated Counter Strike and you have autoattacked, right as the damage from your autoattack lands re-activate Counter Strike and this will cancel the rest of your autoattack. This is very useful if you want to do a fast combo with your W and Titanic Hydra for example.

Ranked Play/Jax's place in the team

Jax can be played in multiple ways. He can splitpush very effectively, especially in mid- to lategame with the Titanic Hydra rush. He can escape sticky situations with his ward hops and with that put constant pressure on the lane he splits. He can also be played as a frontliner if your team lacks a tanky champion since Jax gets naturally tanky with Grandmaster's Might and a couple of tank items and you are set. He can also assasinate squishys even when building tanky, so if your team is fighting and you see the enemy ADC caught off guard you should try to assasinate the ADC if possible.

Ward hopping and trinket choice

Sometimes after top laners and others switch to either Farsight Alteration or Oracle Lens but not on Jax. On Jax you keep Warding Totem so you can ward hop and potentially escape from tough spots. It's extremely useful when splitpushing and there are multiple enemies coming at you you just wardhop over a wall.

You should also note you can use your Leap Strike on things like Jarvan IV flag, Thresh lantern and so on.

Summary

Jax is extremely good champion at taking advantage of an lead and carrying your team to victory! He can be difficult to play against comps with lot's of heavy CC but even that can't stop the Grandmaster in some cases.
