Introduction

IMPORTANT: This guide is a Work in Progress (WiP)! It isn't finished yet and I'll be constantly working on it.

Hey, I'm Plumbèr, also known as ExCloud or ExCloudLoL on YouTube and Twitch.
I have been Master tier since Season 5 by mainly playing Riven.

Riven has been my favorite champion for years. I love everything about that champion, from Combos to Quotes like "Learn from your mistakes.".

Riven has a very high skill ceiling and thus there's always something you can do better and improve at. Because she's a high skill ceiling champion, you must spend a lot of time into playing and practising her, whether that is in Pracitce Tool, Normal games or Ranked games. If you love champions that have a lot of cool Combos, Animation Cancels and Outplay potential, Riven might be a good choice for you!

Without further ado, let's jump right into my guide. I will talk about many things and I hope that I'm able to teach you things you didn't know yet.

I would appreciate any feedback you can provide to me. I'll gladly adjust things based on feedback.

Summoner Spells

Flash is a necessary summoner spell on Riven.
Not only is Flash a summoner spell to gap close, retreat or get over terrains, but it also has a very good synergy with Riven's spells. It is necessary to Flash into the enemy backline and one shot them or give your team a good engage.

Teleport is my personal preference as the 2nd summoner spell. Teleport is a summoner spell that gives you the opportunity to split, roam and pressure the map. Teleport also gives you the opportunity to go for a safe back and teleport back to the lane.

Pros / Cons

Pros

+ Strong in punishing opponents for their mistakes
+ Spells can be combined to create powerful Combos
+ Crowd Control (3rd Broken Wings ; Ki Burst)
+ Very mobile ( Broken Wings ; Valor)
+ Strong oneshot potential against Low HP's
+ A lot of Outplay potential

Riven is probably one of the best champions that can punish opponents for their mistakes. A simple misstep by the enemy can lead to a very bad trade for them because of the strong trade patterns of Riven. Her spells can be used to do strong combos. She has a decent amount of CC that can help her win trades. She's very mobile without needing movement speed since her spells Broken Wings and Valor make it possible for her to move very fast. She has a lot of oneshot potential in the Mid-Late game which makes her a constant threat for squishy champions such as ADC's and APC's. In general, she has a lot of outplay potential which makes her very dangerous even when she's low.
Cons

- Squishy
- Can easily be countered by CC
- Hard to master
- Can be punished by misusing her spells
- Mistakes can be crucial
- Relies on Cooldown Reduction

Riven is squishy and thus easily killable if she mispositions herself. She can easily be countered by a lot of CC. Since she's a high skill cap champion, Riven is very hard to master which can be frustrating and leads to less success in games. By misusing spells, she can be punished very easily, especially if she doesn't have a lot of CDR since her Cooldowns are rather long. Mistakes, such as missing auto attacks, not animation canceling fast enough or dashing into the wrong direction with Broken Wings or Valor can lead to bad results like losing kills or dying. She relies on CDR which she needs time for to obtain. Because of that, Riven's early game isn't as strong as it used to be.

Runes

  • Transcendence: One of the most important Runes on Riven. It gives you 10% CDR at lvl 10. Although it takes a while until you obtain the CDR from Transcendence, it will be a strong power spike for Riven since you usually have 30% CDR before you reach lvl 10.
  • Scorch: I like Scorch because it increases your DMG in short trades. It's very useful in laning phase. If you know you won't trade a lot in laning phase and want to scale more, you can also go for Gathering Storm.

Abilities

  • Runic Blade (P): Your "bread and butter" on Riven. Runic Blade is the reason why basic attacks inbetween abilites are very important.
  • Broken Wings (Q): Your ability to deal damage, gap close, CC (3rd Broken Wings) and escape. It is the ability which is most known for using Basic Attacks inbetween each spell cast.

    Q > BA > Q > BA > Q > BA
    BA: "Basic Attack"

It is also a similiar version of a basic attack reset such as Vayne's Tumble, Camille's Precision Protocol and Jax's Empower. The difference is that Broken Wing's basic attack reset is harder to execute since it requires you to click on the ground between using Broken Wings and a basic attack.

    Q > GC > BA > Q > GC > BA > Q > GC > BA
    GC: "Ground Click"
  • Ki Burst (W): Your ability to stun enemies around you. It has great synergy with your Ult Wind Slash since your opponents aren't able to execute any commands while being stunned, making it easier for you to hit your Wind Slash.
  • Valor (E): Your utility ability that allows you to gap close, prevent damage, Animation Cancel and escape. You can cancel the animation of all your other spells with Valor, making it an important ability to safe time at executing actions as Riven.
  • / Blade of the Exile / Wind Slash (R1/R2): Blade of the Exile gives you AD and increased range on your Basic Attacks, Broken Wings and Ki Burst, whereas Wind Slash gives you a very strong execution spell that deals more damage based on the missing health (maxing at 75% missing health) of your opponent.

Ability Sequence

> > >
We max Broken Wings to maximize our damage output.
After that we max Valor to increase the shield power and decrease the cooldown of it. By doing so, we are able to dash more frequently and thus are more mobile which helps at gap closing and escaping. It also increases the shield power which can be very useful against a lot of burst at once.
Ultimately, we max Ki Burst.

Although maxing Ki Burst first gives you more damage and a lower cooldown on your stun ability, there are still more Pro's at maxing Valor first. Valor allows you to move more freely around the map and also increases your surviving rate. Even though Ki Burst increases your damage output, I still prefer to go for Valor because of it's general benefits. In the end it still depends on your current state of the game since more damage could be more beneficial in a game where you're snowballing, whereas being more mobile and resistent might be more useful when you're behind.
