Introduction
**For some reason i cant add a boots section, but pretty much they all work. It's situational.**
You have 2 jobs in laning phase - don't die & farm. Always ward river and your tri-bush when you can, even on blue side. While farming early you don't want to really use your barrels unless a large wave is crashing your tower. Stick with autos and your q until you get Trinity Force - as TF is your power spike and after you have it it is much easier to kill minions with barrels. Killing minions with passive autos and q's (this also counts with barrels - i.e. passive autoing or q'ing barrels to kill minions) gives you extra gold and silver serpents. You use silver serpents to upgrade your ult.
After you purchase TF, you will also be looking to poke your opponent with combos. If they are ranged, then it can be very tricky. Place a barrel out of their range next to/ behind you and start your combo from there. I suggest watching YT video tutorials to work on your barrel mechanics.
Here is a short guide for the basic idea - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDs0-Ww5ysM&t=1s - the rest is all practice.
Once you hit level 6, always, and I mean always look at your minimap. If you see a fight starting to break out, use your ult to either slow and enemy retreat, aide an allied retreat, secure a kill, or aide in a brawl with soft cc and damage. A little later in the game, you can use your ult to stop/steal baron/drag or stop enemies from pushing towers.

In team fights, you should always ult if you have it to cause panic and aide your team. If the fight is in your favor, then you can save it to cut off enemy retreats. You should be looking to land barrel combos as your main source of damage. After being hit with a barrel-q combo, enemy squishies should be running for the hills if they're not already dead. You should wait until someone on your team engages as it is much easier for the enemy to take out your barrels when they are not being attacked.
