[9.6] Kayle - AD/AP Build for Top & Support

Who am I?


Hey guys!
Since the rework hit live servers, I haven't played Kayle that often, so please keep in mind that this is guide includes somewhat of theory crafting in regards of the build and possibly the laning. I am a Kayle Main/OTP on EUW, but haven't played her for the last two seasons. During that time I mained support.

What is this guide for?


This "guide" is, as you can see, for the champion Kayle in the Summoner's Rift. It has a focus on Top/Mid lane and Support. I will try to keep this updated, but I can't promise being able to answer questions. Right now it's still somewhat of a WIP regarding the matchups (Threats/Synergy) and only contains builds. I will also try to add a laning phase part later.

Why do you like this champion?


I discovered that she's strong in a 3v3 match back in about the middle of Season 4. So I tried her in 3v3 first and brought her later into the Rift where I was successful. The rework was needed and while it might seem extremely weak, during laning phase, it is extremely strong if she gets out of laning phase.
Build - AP Top/Mid Back to Top

AP Top/Mid

Items
Your starting item is a Corrupting Potion. With it you can combat Kayle's Mana neediness. During the time between you entered lane and your first back, you'll notice that Kayle is eating up alot of mana. Therefore you want to get a Dark Seal on your first back, in order to increase the Mana/HP amount you'll restore from the Corrupting Potion. You can also pickup Boots of Speed along with a Cloth Armor or Null-Magic Mantle - depending on your gold amount and matchup. The way your lane will play out now, is deciding your first item. If you're even or ahead, then you can get Nashor's Tooth first and leave Hextech Gunblade out completely. If you're behind or even in an unfavorable matchup, then you'll get Hextech Gunblade first. Once you have your first item partially done, you can complete your boots, which will be Ninja Tabi, Mercury's Treads or Berserker's Greaves - fully depending on your matchup. If your first item was Nashor's Tooth, then you want to get Guinsoo's Rageblade next, otherwise you'll get Nashor's Tooth and then Guinsoo's Rageblade. Depending on the way your game is being played, you can get either Rabadon's Deathcap or Lich Bane. Rabadon's Deathcap is good in games where the teams are straight up fighting eachother, while Lich Bane is good where you have to poke the enemy team. Then you can top off your build with a Rylai's Crystal Scepter or in case the enemy tanks have magic resist, then you'll want to Wit's End. If you're against an unfavorable AP matchup, then you might be able to get Wit's End and Mercury's Treads as first items, but then you would have to leave Hextech Gunblade out, or build it after Guinsoo's Rageblade. Otherwise you would just delay your core items for too long.

Runes
Rune pages 1-5 are for Top/Mid lane. I'll refer to them as page #1-5, so please check the pages at the top of the guide.

Page #1: This would be your default rune page, as it gives you sustain throughout the lane and you'll combat your mana expenses through Manaflow Band. You want to use Starfire Spellblade on the enemy laner every time your Manaflow Band is ready to be stacked. The stats would be used to get your Armor/Magic Resist, but you can change them to whatever you prefer.

Page #2: This page is using the same main tree as Page #1, just with the difference that the secondary tree is Resolve instead of Sorcery. With Resolve you'll be able to sustain a bit more during laning phase and your stats will be either double armor or double magic resist. This will make it a bit easier for you to survive laning. Additionally this is my preferred rune page.

Page #3: Kleptomancy is currently a popular keystone on Kayle. You can procc it for free with your Starfire Spellblade, similiar to Ezreal's Mystic Shot. I haven't tried it, so I can't really say much about this.

Page #4: This is a more tanky advance towards surviving and getting ahead in laning phase. You can stack up HP and whenever you get to the enemy tower, your Demolish will deal some more damage than the previous time. The reason for this is simply that Demolish scales with Max HP. Using this page would require you to go Hextech Gunblade as you don't have any healing besides Celestial Blessing.

Page #5: The last rune page would be one that focuses more on trading, but you would have to be careful since you, once again, don't have any healing besides Celestial Blessing. Trades might go well in the beginning, but might fail completely later on.

I recommend you use Page #2, as it would help you sustain and survive laning phase reliably.

Your first skill order is E>Q>W. Throughout laning phase, you'll use your E on the enemy and poke him down slowly. If they aren't careful, then you'll be able to kill them eventually. The Q will increase the slow and damage, which will be handy in close combat. Later on your Q will sadly fall off and won't be as useful anymore. Your W is maxed last since you would have the sustain through runes and/or Hextech Gunblade.

Your second skill order is Q>E>W. This would be your go-to skill order if you're unable to farm reliably. You would use your Q mainly to farm. Then max E, which would help you out in the lane. If the enemy is hugging their minions, then you can poke them with Q and hurt them with your E. Your W is maxed last since you would have the sustain through runes and/or Hextech Gunblade.
Build - AD Top/Mid Back to Top

AD Top/Mid

Items
Your starting item is a Corrupting Potion. With it you can combat Kayle's Mana neediness. Then you would get Infinity Edge, Essence Reaver and Statikk Shiv. The build order might vary, but this build should give you the highest damage output overall. I haven't tried it myself and therefore can't really say much about it, but it seems pretty promising - Yet I would still recommend the AP build.

Runes
The runes aren't different, so please check the AP Top/Mid build for a description. I also recommend Page #2 for this build.

Skill Order
The skill orders aren't different either, so please check them in the AP Top/Mid build above.
Build - Support Back to Top

Support

Items
Your starting item is Ancient Coin, as it has the most reliable way of completing the support quest. Additionally the mana coin drops will help you out alot. With your first back, you want to upgrade your Ancient Coin to Nomad's Medallion. Now your build is depending on your team. If you have a champion that's relying on autoattacks, then you want to get Ardent Censer as first item. The reason behind it is self explaining. Next are the boots, which would be Ionian Boots of Lucidity for the extra CDR on your Celestial Blessing and next up is Athene's Unholy Grail. It will make your heals even stronger due to it's passive. Afterwards you get Zeke's Convergence to give your ADC, or whoever the autoattack champion is, a nice small damage boost while being ulted by you. Last you'll get Redemption.

If you don't have a champion that relies on autoattacks, then you'll get Athene's Unholy Grail first, into Ionian Boots of Lucidity and then you would get Redemption. If the enemy team has heavy cc, then you can pick up Mikael's Crucible, otherwise you could get Twin Shadows or another AP item. Your last item will be Rylai's Crystal Scepter, which allows you to pretty much perma slow the enemy post level 11.

Note: Depending on the enemy ADC, you might want to get Ninja Tabi instead.

Runes
Rune pages 6-8 are for Support Kayle. I'll refer to them as page #6-8, so please check the pages at the top of the guide.

Page #6: This rune page is using Kleptomancy, which is used to get yourself a gold lead on the enemy support. Combined with the Ancient Coin items, you'll be able to make more gold than the enemy support. I would recommend this page, if you're facing a melee support, as it's easier to procc it with your E.

Page #7: Instead of Kleptomancy, this one uses Glacial Augment. Your E will deal damage in an AOE area once you've hit level 6, and the AOE applies the Glacial Augment slow to all hit targets. Additionally you swap Cosmic Insight with Approach Velocity, which allows you to follow up with your Q.

Your first skill order is W>Q>E. This is the preferred skill order if you've taken Glacial Augment. Your W will speed up and heal your allies, your Q will apply the slow and armor shred. Your E is the last max, since you have no real use for it, other than poking during lane, but it depends on the enemy bot lane if you're able to poke. This skill order, in combination with Glacial Augment, could be the better option into a heavy poke lane.

Your second skill order is W>E>Q. This is the preferred skill order if you've taken Kleptomancy. Your W will speed up and heal your allies, while your E is your main source for Kleptomancy proccs. Against melee supports you'll have it pretty easy to procc it, you should just be careful if they've any cc. Your Q is the last max since the armor shred stays the same on all ranks and the first rank slow should be enough to be able to kill someone together with your team.
Kayle's Spells Back to Top
Divine Ascent
Kayle ascends through four forms before reaching her divine state.

Zealous (level 1): Kayle gains 6% Bonus Attack Speed for each stack. At max, Kayle becomes Exalted and gains 15% Bonus Movement Speed towards enemy champions.

Aflame (level 6): While Exalted, Kayle's basic attacks launch an AOE cone in the target's direction, dealing 10 − 30 (based on Starfire Spellblade's Rank) (+ 10% AD) (+ 20% AP) magic damage to enemies hit.

Arisen (level 11): Kayle's range permanently increases to 550. Zealous's bonus attack speed is increased to 10% bonus attack speed, capping at 50%.

Transcendent (level 16): Kayle becomes permanently Exalted. The AOE cone deals true damage.

Radiant Blast
After a 0.5-second delay, a celestial sword launches into the target direction.

The sword explodes into a cross upon collision with an enemy, dealing 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+ 60% bonus AD) (+50% of ability power) magic damage and slowing targets struck by 26 / 32 / 38 / 44 / 50%, while reducing their armor and magic resistance by 20% for 3 seconds.

Celestial Blessing
Kayle and target allied champion are healed for 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 (+30% of ability power) health and gain 26 / 32 / 38 / 44 / 50% (+ 8% per 100 AP) bonus movement speed for 2 seconds.

Starfire Spellblade
Passive: Kayle's basic attacks deal 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 (+ 10% AD) (+20% of ability power) bonus magic damage. Additionally, Aflame's base damage is increased.

Active: Kayle's next basic attack within 6 seconds deals 10 / 12.5 / 15 / 17.5 / 20% of target's missing health as bonus magic damage. Post-6, it also damages enemies surrounding the target.

Pre-11, Starfire Spellblade causes Kayle to become a ranged champion with 550 attack range on the empowered attack.

Divine Judgement
Kayle conjures swords around the target allied champion or herself over 1.5 seconds, after which she brings them crashing to the ground, dealing 200 / 350 / 500 (+ 100% bonus AD) (+80% of ability power) magic damage to all enemies in the area.

Divine Judgement also grants the target invulnerability for 2 / 2.5 / 3 seconds. Kayle cannot attack while channeling this ability.
