I've been Diamond for a few seasons. My account is "Cocho" on NA. The account in the picture below isn't mine, these people build her in the way most people do. I also prefer this build and I believe it is the best at the moment. Akali is my second most played mid laner.

Doran's Ring:

This gives you more AP than Dark Seal. Long Sword isn't as good of a start,it will convert your runes to AD and you dont want that.

Hextech Gunblade:

First back you want to try to get Hextech Revolver, but getting any AP works. Bilgewater Cutlass works great if you can kill your laner and need a slow instead of damage. This should always be the first item you finish. You can delay Hextech Gunblade for Hexdrinker or Seeker's Armguard if necessary. Don't upgrade Hexdrinker, but you could upgrade Seeker's Armguard later if you wanted to.

Sorcerer's Shoes:

I would try to build this as my default boots. Don't build others unless you have no other choice. Sorcs is really good vs most enemy comps. Only get tabis or merc treads if you MUST. Sorc shoes are REALLLY GOOD.

Oblivion Orb:

After Hextech Gunblade, you're usually looking for penetration or defense. If you don't need Zhonya's Hourglass, then build this item into Rabadon's Deathcap. Build Void Staff in place of this item if you think they will make magic resist. If they don't have magic resist but they are a tanky team, then skip this for Liandry's Torment

Morellonomicon:

So I left out Morellonomicon and I just put Oblivion Orb in some places. This is because you shouldn't upgrade if the enemy team doesn't have healing. It's just a waste because you could start building something else. You build Oblivion Orb for the spell penetration, so you don't need to upgrade it.

Liandry's torment:

If you're against a bunch of melee champions, then Morellonomicon will not do much. Make Liandry's Torment instead. Akali Q slows, so does Hextech Gunblade. Melee champions have higher MR than ranged champions, that that is why we skip out of the flat pen.

Void staff

Build instead of Oblivion Orb if they make magic resist.Or somewhere after Liandry's Torment

Rabadon's Deathcap:

Rabadons is built after pen item like Void Staff or Morellonomicon because the pen items will deal more damage. Rabadons is pretty expensive. Don't delay it too much though.

Defensive Items:

Preferably I don't want to make either, but there are often games where you need one of them. Zhonya's Hourglass will help you in teamfights, so try to build one at some point. If I need it, then I build it after my first or second full item. I really don't like Banshee's Veil, just make Hexdrinker. It is cheap.
