Introduction

Hello! I'm roselol and I've been a Ziggs onetrick since Season 7! That's like...a lot of years!! I've consistently hit Masters+ with Ziggs and play him mid/sup/ad into every matchup. Check out my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/roselol if you're interested in watching live gameplay! |
Why play ziggs
He is cute
Strengths:
1. Ziggs is easy
2. You can play from two screens away and avoid assassins entirely
3. Even when you are behind, you will do damage
Weaknesses:
1. Skillshots are hard to land
2. Really short
3. Games last longer, so you end up wasting more of your life playing this game
I started playing Ziggs because I played vs one as a Lux. I smashed this Ziggs in lane (he was 0/5) but he was still able to oneshot me and i got salty and started playing him. As I played him, I noticed he waddles when he walks and he looks so happy to live life so it's super easy to just zoom in on him and ignore my afk jg and top lane arguing in base all game
TL;DR
Your goal should be different depending on who your support is and what the jungle matchup is. If your jungle doesn't gank or your support picked a scaling lane, you should buy Tear of the Goddess and play for farm with Teleport. If not, you should buy Doran's Ring and play for lane with Heal.
A winning bot lane matchup is any cc champion vs a weaker support+adc. Things like Samira + Thresh or Draven + Leona is not a matchup you're going to win easily and you should do your best to deny them gold by not dying. In this particular scenarion, your win condition is just scaling while denying them their win condition (snowballing through kills).
When you're playing with CC champions, it's important that you position in a way that allows you to capitalize on their engage.
Following up will allow you to easily land your Bouncing Bomb and Hexplosive Minefield. Your auto should be enhanced since E + Q usually resets your passive Short Fuse unless you just used it.
After that, you can either look to Satchel Charge them forward for the kill, or Satchel Charge to disengage. This also has the bonus effect of pushing them through your Hexplosive Minefield for additional damage!
When you're playing poke champions, it's important to play around your cooldowns and deny enemies the opportunity to trade back. Eventually, you can create a kill window and finish them off.
For any unwinnable matchups, you just wait for them to walk into the wave and look for Bouncing Bomb. Make sure to save your Satchel Charge to escape. As long as you're actively farming, you will make the game miserable for everyoen involved.

Runes
Arcane Comet is the best keystone on Ziggs due to it's versatility and synergy with his core kit. Arcane Comet rewards you for basic poking and supplements your total damage with your combo.

Magical Footwear is free gold on an otherwise infinite scaling champion like [[Ziggs]. It's the equievelant of 420gold while giving us an additional +10 MS to kite with in the mid game since Laning Phase doesn't really matter on this champion due to your insane range advantage. |
Biscuit Delivery is a fun rune because it gives you additional lane staying power to chuck bombs infinitely. It also gives you an additional +50 Mana Cap for each biscuit consumed. |
AP/AP and Armor/Magic Resist shards based on match up.
Items
vs
If you're the only source of Ability Power on your team or the enemy team drafted mostly carries, this opens up Luden's Tempest itemization. It's important to note that the mythic passive grants additional Flat Magic Penetration making it easier to blow up squishy targets. This passive is not as valuable into tankier compositions.
Liandry's Torment is a great item that does consistent DPS against tanks and squishy targets. The mythic passive also gives you additional Ability Haste to keep your spell rotation cycling as much as possible.
Doran's Ring is great for sustain because of its passive. You're gonna have a lot of mana problems early if you play anything like me
Lost Chapter is super super super good and is your main power spike. You're able to maintain waveclear for a very long time with this item. If you can, stay in lane until you have 1300 gold and buy this straight up. This would be the ideal gold breakpoint, otherwise purchasing components towards this is fine if you're forecd to recall.
To be honest, if you're forced to build Seeker's Armguard early the game is pretty much over already. Especially for Bottom Ziggs! This is a good source of armor that will eventually build into Zhonya's Hourglass. The main issue is that you're delaying your mythic item to purchase this. It's much easier to just not lose lane early and build Zhonya's Hourglass second if they have a lot of AD Assasins.
I absolutely hate to say this, but buying Pink Wards means you're not spending gold on damage. If you're playing competetively, clash or 5s I would buy at least one Control Ward on reset. Otherwise, only damage.
Magic Penetration is extremely important on mages. When you buy Luden's Tempest as well this will put you up to 24 Magic Penetration. Most carries will have around 40~ MR after the Durability Update if they don't buy Magic Resist. This means with Shadowflame you'll be doing effectively true damage at two items.
This is a pretty good item on far-casting mages, but the stats aren't very good right now compared to other items we can build.
If you're forced to build Anti-Heal it usually just means your team isn't very good. This is a must purchase if you're playing against the holy grail of healing champions, Kayn/ Aatrox/ Sylas/ Yone/ Soraka/ Dr. Mundo Etc
Rabadon's Deathcap is an extremely good item for RAW AP if you want to get big numbers. You typically build this item when you're very ahead and have access to lots of gold. Of course, the gold breakpoints for this item can be difficult to achieve so sometimes you'll want to play for Seraph's Embrace or Shadowflame instead.
Seraph's Embrace is a really strong statstick that gives you access to near unlimited mana, ability haste, and a decent amount of Ability Power. It also has decent itemization, having cheap components that you can purchase on any recall. This is a pretty solid choice if you're not confident about building full damage with Rabadon's Deathcap or Shadowflame
Dark Seal is the best item in game giving you 400% gold effeciency at full stacks. Mejai's Soulstealer also quantifies as a legendary item giving you access to early mythic passive if you're going Luden's Tempest.
Zhonya's Hourglass is what you build when you're dying too much. It's great for baiting out tower dives and outplaying people after you use Hexplosive Minefield + Satchel Charge and wait for cooldowns to come up again. If the enemy team has a Zed, a Talon, a Nocturne or a Rengar, you're going to want Zhonya's Hourglass
Banshee's Veil is really good against heavy AP teams, but it comes at the cost of damage. I personally will purchase a Null-Magic Mantle to mitigate penetration builds and then I can progress the item later if it's still necessary. 25 magic resist counters the full value of Sorcerer's Shoes + Luden's Tempest anyways.
Combos
1. Hexplosive Minefield + Bouncing Bomb + Auto Attack
When you notice the enemy going up to last hit, you'll have a general idea of where they'll be and when. This is a relatively easy combo that does good burst damage. You want to use Hexplosive Minefield first because it's easier to land and slows the enemy. Follow with Bouncing Bomb then auto before disengaging. Using both these abilities should give you access to Short Fuse.
2. Bouncing Bomb + Satchel Charge
This is your max-range combo, you can lead with Bouncing Bomb then Satchel Charge them into the bomb. This is an easy combo to perform if you practice.
3. Hexplosive Minefield + Satchel Charge
This combo is about utilizing your Satchel Charge to push them through multiple mines from your Hexplosive Minefield. It's important to recognize that using your Satchel Charge aggressively means you'll be vulnerable for the entirety of the cooldown.

KOREAN PLAYERS
Playing in the Korea server is a really good option for Ziggs. Korean players (even in low elo) are more teamfight orientated, and they don't mind playing tanks with cc to be able to win the game. This is a meta that Ziggs thrives in.
Here are some korean Ziggs players that we can maybe learn from.
korean ziggs #1
They are 3x master tier in Korea. They've been playing Ziggs since season 3. They also stream at twitch.tv/madziggs.
They max W second and it seems they take dark harvest and teleport as a rune. they also go bot lane every game. He starts Tear of the Goddess and builds Lost Chapter. Then builds it into a Luden's Tempest.
After boots, they upgrade the Tear of the Goddess into Seraph's Embrace. Then they build Void Staff.
maybe a Zhonya's Hourglass if they are dying too much. In North America, bot lane may not be viable as some solo queue players are adamant on picking ap champions regardless of draft.
Magic resist items are currently BROKEN. Avoid triple AP+.
korean ziggs #2
They play Ziggs bot as well. It seems that they start Doran's Ring and then build Liandry's Torment. Afterwards they build Demonic Embrace and then zhonyas/void staff.
They seem to max E second, which is good for zoning for objectives. This player likely plays slow and safe.

finishing thoughts
thank you so much for reading my guide!! if you have any questions, feel free to comment!
i've been an avid Ziggs player for a really long time, so im so happy that you read this guide and you're willing to try ziggs out in any game mode. i think he's not the best champion, but he's definitely a pick that people don't expect and definitely not a champion that's going to be nerfed for a really long time.
roselol.com
he could potentially carry a game or stall a game long enough so people can carry and not a lot of people expect his damage. there's times where i solo kill my lane every game and people get confused by ziggs range or damage, and allchat about how op it is. i hope that your ziggs journey is nice and smooth and i wish you the best of luck against all the assassins in the meta.
