Threats & Synergies
Aatrox is a hard match up to rate. This is because of how good the enemy is at Aatrox. A good Aatrox may be able to beat you in lane. While a bad Aatrox is a different story. Play this match up as you would with a tank. Just poke him with grasp Q's and farm with barrels. Also try and poke him with barrels if you can hit him with them.
Akali was recently nerfed to the ground and then slightly buffed. For Akali I suggest playing safe for this one. By corrupting potions and poke with grasp, Q's and barrels. Be sure to save your oranges for when she engages to ensure you survive them.
Camille is one of the harder match ups for Gangplank. Her engage is very good and she can pin you down with her ult. On top of that her damage is CRAZY and Gangplank is pretty squishy early in the game. Your best bet is to save oranges for her engages and try to poke if you can.
Cho'Gath is a pretty easy match up overall. Mainly because you can bully him by poking him out of lane. You can also heal out of execution range. The only hard thing about Cho'Gath is his Q. Obviously the easiest route is to just dodge them. Basically, just abuse his bad early game and try to shut him down so he won't become such a threat later.
This match up is a tough one. But if you can land barrel combos and poke without getting caught then you should be fine. Be sure to ask your jungle for ganks. If you can't get jungle help for whatever reason. You should probably just defend and play like you would against a tank. Just poke and farm under tower.
This match up is pretty difficult overall. Mundo plays like Olaf does. He hits you with an axe and he chases you down. But he is very hard to kill because of his ultimate and he gets health from cleavers he lands on champs. Luckily for you though, he's a very rare pick and you'll hardly ever fight him. I recommend banning him.
Her dueling potential is better than your's. She'll almost always win duels against you but she's melee meaning that she's pretty easy to poke. Now you can hit barrel combos but it's very difficult because if Fiora sees it coming she can dash away before she gets hit. But it's worth a shot to try and hit barrels.
This match up should never happen unless you're playing blind pick. If you do end up going against him, you just have to hope that your enemy sucks worse than you do.
Garen is probably my least favorite champ to fight against as Gangplank. Garen has a movement speed buff, an engage, armor increase, out of combat healing, an execution ult, AOE damage and lots of health and a way of healing. Your best bet is to poke and walk away when he goes in. Try and predict when he's going to ult so you can orange out of range. Also land barrels if possible. When you're low just use potions and play safe.
Gnar isn't hard. He's just really, really annoying to fight since he can poke really well and has great engage as mini Gnar. As big Gnar though he can stun you which you can orange out of. On top of that you can try and poke him down. Play aggressive and poke.
Basically an annoying match up. He makes his lane a military base and presses one button while his army of turrets melts your health bar. You also can't engage him since his turrets take zero damage and he can just stopwatch or hourglass and lets his turrets do all the work.
I used to have a really hard time against Illaoi back when I first started. But as I kept playing I realized she's actually not a very hard match up. You mainly got to dodge her E and poke her and when you push be sure to destroy her tentacles.
Not as bad as people think. You can orange out of her stun. But she can kill you if she ults since she gets the double dash effect. Since she's squishy you can poke her pretty easy and you can also land barrels for extra damage and the passive reset for trades. Just be careful with hitting passive autos.
A very easy match up overall since you can orange from his stun and you can poke him out of lane with Sheen. On top of that it's easy to land barrels on him and he can't dive you for kills unless you run out of mana.
Now I personally have never went against a Jayce in lane more than three times. But if I had to guess it's not a easy match up since he has a good engage and can poke you with his ranged Q's. He also has a knock back that you can't orange from meaning he can knock you away from tower or into his own tower.
Almost all ranged champion are a hard match up for Gangplank. Now Kalista is a new pick in top and she's an effective one too. She can destroy your barrels with her autos and can bounce away from them. She also can out range you. But if you can land some barrels and poke then you may be able to kill her because she's an ADC meaning she's very squishy.
Also a very easy match up for Gangplank. Her early game is very abuse able so you can poke her and you can lane barrels. Bully her out of lane so she isn't such a major threat later in the game.
Dodge his shurikens and orange out his stuns and you should be able to kill him with no problems.
The problem with Kled is that you have to play somewhat aggressive since he is one of the best tower divers in the game. If you can poke him and keep the wave away from your tower when you're low then you should have no issues with him.
All you really have to do is poke him and farm. Keep oranges handy for when he dives you so he doesn't get a guaranteed kill. If he dives you be sure to save your oranges for when he Q's you so he can't get the movement speed buff and catch up to you (if you can).
Poke him and only use oranges for his death realm. Believe it or not Gangplank's oranges get you out of the death realm instantly. Also try and avoid his pulls.
Nasus can and will be very strong late game which means you have to abuse his bad early game and save oranges for his wither (W).
Ornn has a good engage and is a great tank. He can also dive you and all his cc are knock ups and oranges don't work on knock ups. Play safe by poking and farming and wait for jungle ganks.
Pantheon's tower dives are very good and his E can block tower shots which means he can definitely kill you. He also has practically a free teleport and has great pressure he also does a metric shit ton of damage.
May be hard to kill but her kill pressure is nothing compared to your oranges. Play aggressive and be wary for enemy jungle ganks.
Hard to poke because she's ranged. Does a LOT of damage and has a near sight which means you can't poke for a few seconds but she can. She also has GREAT roaming potential.
Renekton has great engage but you can orange out of stun and he loses trades. Land barrels and poke and you'll be fine.
Difficult to kill and you can't poke him if he just sits in a bush. If he pounces on you, save oranges for his E and be sure to lay down wards so you always know where he is. Get control wards and keep them handy.
People constantly think that Riven is good against Gangplank, but the truth is her W is orange-able. You can poke her with your Q and land barrels if she doesn't dash away.
Rumble is tanky does a lot of damage is good in teamfights and has great kill pressure. The perfect counter Gangplank mix.
Not very common anymore but if you do end up facing a Ryze in lane you'll be perfectly fine. You can orange out his rune prison and he's one of the most squishy champions in the game meaning you can easily land barrel combos and poke him out of lane.
Sett has great engage and has very strong true damage. He also wins almost every trade because of Q and his passive enhanced autos.
A pretty easy match up. Orange out of taunts and poke him. Watch out for when he ults and ping it when he does. You win trades. Poke and farm and try to pressure him.
Stay out of his poison and try to trade with him. Your passive cripples him and you can easily poke him.
Play safe, farm and poke and dodge his Q's if you can do this you may not be able to kill him but you'll be able to keep him from getting too big. Make sure to ask for ganks and watch our for ganks since a fed Sion is a nightmare.
