Play Style

This build is focused on Cho'Gath as a top laner. Cho'gath's main purpose is to tank large amounts of damage, while also dishing out a decent amount of his own. Cho'gath is very effective in team fights and boasts two very good CC abilities Rupture and Feral Scream, with an execution high damage ultimate Feast.



Phases Of The Game


During the laning phase, try to get off a Rupture on your opponent, this will damage them and slow them for a few seconds. If you are able to, run up and hit them with either a basic attack or Feral Scream. After a while when you see the enemy is low, don't be afraid to tank a bit of damage and go in for the kill.
During the laning / poking phase of the early game, don't forget to farm, it is extra important as Cho'Gath to keep you alive and healthy in lane.

During the Team Fighting phase of the game, you are predominantly your team's tank. Use your Rupture to initiate fights and tank a bit of damage. Be careful not to go to far in without your team though, because even a tank can get killed in a 1 v 5.

Ability Combo


The major ability combo Cho'gath uses is, Rupture, Feral Scream, Feast. This combo, knocks up and slows, allowing you to get in range, for a silence to prevent the opponent from getting away, and then either a few basic attacks to weaken the opponent with your Vorpal Spikes and finally finishing them off with a Feast to get the kill and a stack to give health.
This Combo also works very well for running to get a blue buff, as it will quickly rip through the golems and get you a stack in the process.



As long as you keep your feast stacks high, you will be an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.

Items

Mercury's Treads, Frozen Heart, Spirit Visage, Rabadon's Deathcap, Abyssal Scepter, Randuin's Omen



Mercury's Treads - predominantly used for the passive ability "TENACITY" as it reduces duration of almost all CC by 35%. The bonus magic resist is nice, but it is not enough reason to buy Merc's, as it is a waste of money for just the MR

Frozen Heart - arguably the best item on Cho'gath because it gives great armor (100) and amazing mana (400) and as an added bonus a whopping 20% CDR, its great to get feasts and Q's off that much faster. Finally Frozen Heart has a passive that reduces attackers attack speed by 15% which is just awesome.

Spirit Visage - provides great MR (55), Health (400), and a bonus 10 CDR to boot, bringing your total to 33.75% which is solid for a tank. The passive is also quite good on Cho'gath, increasing your health regen and healing from your passive.

Rabadon's Deathcap is pure AP, very solid boost good to keep Cho'gath a damage threat and AP scales fairly well with his abilities.

Randuin's Omen - another awesome item with Cho, After the nerf it is slightly worse, but, the stat boosts are still solid at 400 health and 60 armor, and 10% crit reduction, and the passive is another attack speed slow when hit, so attackers attack speed drops to 70% of its original when they hit you. The active also slows the attack by 35% which is great for gaining to feast on them

Abyssal Mask - a solid way to wrap up Cho'gath, giving 70 AP 50 MR and reduces the MR of nearby enemies by 20, overall just very good

Spells

For summoner spells I usually go with Flash and Teleport, although Exhaust, and Ghost are very viable escape or engage tools.



Flash is a summoner spell I put on every single champion, because it can be a gap closer, an excape, or paired up with feast; a deadly combo to kill or steal objectives.

Teleport is very useful for getting back in lane quickly after backing to pick back up on CS and get ahead of your lane opponent. It also provides nice map coverage and protection.

Exhaust is useful as an escape or slow to catch up and feast on your opponent in style. while it is good it does require to be reasonably close to hit and your "Q" Rupture already comes with a slow.

Ghost is an interesting choice, to get back to lane faster or catch or escape from a chasing opponent. If you choose to go with two of either Flash, Teleport, or Ghost the Distortion enchantment on boots will be very useful. Ghost is also useful for getting blue buff, and getting back to lane quickly.

In rare cases, you can use Heal to give you more sustain although it is a bit redundant with the feasting and passive, or you could bring Ignite to help secure kills early game, although it will have less use late game, since you are a tank.

Carnivore - Whenever Cho'Gath kills a unit, he recovers 20 - 71 (+2.83 per level) health and 3.5 - 7.75 (+0.25 per level) mana.

Rupture - Ruptures the ground at target location. After a delay of 0.5 seconds, enemies are launched into the air for 1 second, dealt 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 305 (+100% of ability power) magic damage, and have their movement speed slowed by 60% for 1.5 seconds.

Feral Scream - After 0.5 seconds, Cho'Gath screams in a cone in front of him, silencing enemies for 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 / 2.5 seconds and causing 75 / 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+70% of ability power) magic damage.

Vorpal Spikes - Toggle Ability: Cho'gath's basic attacks launch spikes which deal 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 (+30% of ability power) magic damage in a line in front of him. The width of these spikes increases with his feast stacks.

Feast - After 0.5 seconds, Cho'Gath devours an enemy unit, dealing 300 / 475 / 650 (+0.7 per ability power) true damage (1,000 to minions) that ignores armor and magic resist. If the target is killed, Cho'Gath grows, gaining 90 / 120 / 150 extra health (max 6 stacks). If the target was a minion or a monster, half the cooldown and mana cost are refunded. Each stack of Feast gives Cho'Gath 8.3 attack range, up to 50 bonus range. Cho'Gath loses half his stacks (rounded up) upon death.



I give Cho'gath all his power in his Rupture early to get good poke off and a good initiate and escape tool and very useful for farming. I next look to max out his Feral Scream as the silence is very useful. I take a point in Vorpal Spikes early to help farm and poke, but max it last because the damage doesn't scale very well and isn't necessary on cho'gath early. Take the Feast ability whenever you can, as it is a great execution ability and helps Cho gain health.

Masteries

This build is 9 offense, 21 defense, 0 utility (9/21/0) masteries, focusing on ability power, magic resist, and armor.

In Offense, I like to put 3 points in CDR instead of 4 because the extra point in feast is just additional sustain to help outlast your lane opponent, other than that, standard AP masteries apply to give 24 bonus AP at level 18, 3.75 CDR, and 2 bonus damage to lane minions

In Defense, I put heavy emphasis on Health and Defenses (armor and magic resist) to give Cho'Gath nice tanky-ness. I do like having the Enchanted Armor mastery because it just makes Cho so much tankier

Runes

I give Cho'Gath a nice early boost as his early game isn't the greatest. Flat AP quintessences, Flat Armor Seals, And Flat Health Marks are a good boost to his early game. Scaling MR Glyphs work well with Cho'Gath. In certain scenarios, you could switch the Quintessences for the Seals to get more armor early with a bit less AP but i prefer this balance.

this mix give Cho'gath 14.85 AP, 9 Armor, 27 MR at level 18, and 31.23 Health

Tips and Tricks

Here are a few tips and tricks I've learned while playing Cho'gath.

1. The most useful thing in Cho'gaths entire kit is when you have your ult Feast you see a red circle on the ground below any opposing champ that can be killed with your ult. This allows you to get stacks easier and secure kills better.

2. The hitbox on your E Vorpal Spikes gets wider with feast stacks and your ult level; therefore, with a level 3 ultimate, and 6 stacks of Feast, your Vorpal Spikes are substantially wider and have a slightly longer range.

3. This next tip doesn't only apply to Cho'gath specifically, but it is very useful. Many people don't seem to know that when you use Teleport, always try to teleport to an allied tower, the cool down of teleport will be one minutes less
