Guide To Becoming An Evelynn Main [Season 9]

By BlackRabbet1
Introduction
Hi, I'm BlackRabbet1, an Evelynn Main that started playing League at the end of season 6. I originally ended in Silver IV and stuck with that until Season 8 when I climbed from Silver IV to Plat IV, peaking at Plat 1 primarily playing Evelynn. Given how rapidly I improved and climbed when I started taking ranked seriously, I am fairly confident I can and will get Diamond in season 9. I started learning jungle at the beginning of Season 8 and have since become a jungle main. I played Evelynn before her rework and I still love playing her after the rework although her playstyle is slightly different now.

I enjoy the aspect of Evelynn's camouflage Demon Shade and how she shines at taking advantage of isolated enemies. Evelynn is definitely different to play as compared to other champions but that doesn't necessarily make her difficult to play, just takes some getting used to. If played properly you can definitely win team fights and games with this champion.

The burst and potential to outplay opponents with Demon Shade mixed with Allure and Last Caress makes playing evelynn fun and very satisfying to play.

This is my first guide so I would appreciate any criticism and advice on the guide,
Pros and Cons
PROS

+ Has a healthy jungle clear
+ Insane burst paired with her ultimate
+ Can carry games very hard if ahead
+ Great in lower elo because people don't know how to play around her
+ Has the ability to burst squishies and one shot tanks but only if you land your Allure because you need that % mr shred to damage them at all
+ Can pick off enemies very easily if out of position
+ Has major powerspikes after completing Stalker's Blade - Runic Echoes and Lich Bane
+ Demon Shade can heal you for almost full health mid-late game

Evelynn can abuse her passive Demon Shade and flank enemies easily and sometimes force them into retreating into her or finding themselves in a bad position. Having potential cc with your Allure can lead to easy picks offs and make for some 5v4 situations. Evelynn is rather easy to pick up if you can get used to her playstyle and take advantage of her invisibility and ultimate.
CONS

- Weak pre 6
- Overextending can lead to death
- Early game relies on hitting your charm and having your ultimate up
- Rather lack luster when behind
- Has no major power spike later in the game
- Playstyle can seem odd or difficult
- Difficult to proc Charm late game
- Sometimes important to hit the first part of your Hate Spike

As evelynn you are very squishy and can get picked off before you're able to get off your damage. You often will die if you are reckless or are overly aggressive, a good evelynn player must have patience and wait for the perfect opportunity to go in. Sometimes you need to rely on your team to engage or to follow up with you which usually isn't ideal to have to rely on other people to make the right plays.
Team Composition (Synergies / Counters)
Typically with Evelynn you want to have laners that have some form of cc. Having your laner cc them gives you enough time to get your charm off. While having extra cc does help drastically it's not always needed as long as you can proc your Allure

You want to avoid ganking laners that have a way to dodge your charm like Fizz Playful / Trickster or Zed's Living Shadow. Sometimes you can get your teammate to bait out this ability but it's not very reliable or consistent for that to happen
Runes
  • MAJOR RUNE
  • Ultimate Hunter: Eveynn's Ultimate Last Caress is an aoe ability that deals massive damage, I take this so that it's up as often as possible.

  • MINOR RUNE
  • Absolute Focus: This works well with your passive. As long as you're out of combat you'll almost always have this available because of Demon Shade.
  • MINOR RUNE
  • Waterwalking: This helps you get around the map faster and helps your ability to take scuttle a bit quicker.

-I take 1-10% CDR becauase like I said above, I want my ultimate up as soon as possible, Allure also benefits nicely by this. If you want more adaptive damage that's okay too
-10 Adaptive is pretty standard
-I prefer health over armor and mr but it's personal preference
Summoner Spells

SUMMONER SPELLS
-
FLASH: Standard on Evelynn, helps you reposition and escape when needed.
SMITE: Must take if jungle.
Items
Stalker's Blade - Runic Echoes
Red smite isn't an option because you are by no means a dueler. Blue smite helps you with your burst as well has a slow for them and a speed up for you. Blue smite can be very useful in a different way that many people don't expect. If you Allure someone and they have a Banshee's Veil or a Spell Shield, you can actually smite them while they have the charm up and it will get rid of the spell shield and not waste the charm, I find this very effective when they have a Banshee's Veil.

Sorcerer's Shoes
Gives you Magic Pen and the movement speed you need.

Lich Bane
Always take this as your 2nd item. This item works with your Empowered Whiplash because it applies on-hit effects which procs lich bane. What's perfect about Lich Bane is that it also gives you, Ap which is always needed, CDR which is big on Evelynn, and movement speed which also helps you sneak around the map

Morellonomicon
Morellonomicon gives you some extra health which is nice to help keep you alive in fights, AP, Magic Pen, and grievous wounds which always comes in handy.

Void Staff
Void Staff just helps you deal more damage and remain a threat, simple as that.

Rabadon's deathcap
Gives a drastic increase to AP, get this as your last item unless you are ahead and can get it before if you have the gold

Banshee's veil
Take this item usually as a 3rd item if they have a lot of AP and those champions are becoming a threat, otherwise try and get away with it as a 4th item after Morellonomicon if needed.

Zhonya's Hourglass
Buy this item only when they have 3 or more ad heavy champions. This item is a very rare buy for me because as Evelynn you want to be in and out as fast as possible, so the stopwatch kinda puts you in a weird situation. If you're trying to go in, burst someone and get out safe, you have Last Caress for that. Zhonya's Hourglass makes you vulnerable while in the fight if you have no ult. Long story short, I try to avoid this item, if I do buy it I try to make my team follow up upon my usage of it.

Spellbinder
Whenever I grab this item it's usually only if i'm far ahead and don't feel at risk of dying. It gives you lots of burst and the speed up allows you to be in and out very easily. With Evelynn's Hate Spike you can store up charges very quickly. Buy this item if you are ahead or are not at risk of dying and don't need the extra tankiness with Morellonomicon, Zhonya's Hourglass, or Banshee's Veil

Hextech Protobelt-01
I actually used to take this item a lot when I first started playing Evelynn but don't as much now. It gives you some more engage, damage, and a little bit more tankiness, so even though I don't buy it, it is still a good purchase if you take an interest in it. This item does fall off late game though, so if you do take it, make sure to swap it out when you have the gold later in the game if it gets to that point.
Abilities
Demon Shade: This allows you to go invisible when you hit level 6, dramatically increasing your ganking potential. The amount of health you can regain outside of combat scales with AP, the more AP you have, the more health you regenerate out of combat. This allows you to surprise enemies when you leave the fight for a few moments and return with 90% health which allows you to stay a threat for longer.

Hate Spike: Landing your q increases the damage from your next 3 basic attacks or abilities. Landing the first part of your q isn't always a make or break deal when it comes to a kill but having the extra damage is always a major plus so try to land it whenever possible. When clearing jungle camps make sure to hit the bigger monsters with the first part of Hate Spike to get that extra damage and increase your clear speed. Whatever you hit with the first part of q the ability prioritizes that target, so if you're trying to chase someone and you miss your first q you might risk the chance of your q changing targets.

Allure: This is your engage tool. Almost always when you charm someone it will force a reaction from them so make sure you're properly in position before using it. Something I like to do with Evelynn's charm is make sure you're behind the enemy and then cast Allure, often an enemy will run back to their tower for safety and directly into you because you were behind them the whole time. This tactic usually only works if the enemy is pushed up far enough for you to actually get behind him without being in range of their tower. Being able to hit your charm can sometimes make or break a game or a fight, be careful and take your time with this, charm can be expunged by ANYTHING, that includes.. auto attacking, any part of your q, your e, and even your ultimate. As stated above, like with your Hate Spike, make sure you put this on the bigger monster in the camp to increase your clear speed and give you a healthier clear.

Whiplash: Whiplash is one of your main damage tools, it does AP+% max health and is your main gap closer. This ability becomes empowered and resets whenever you enter Demon Shade and does more damage when empowered. You always want to use Empowered Whiplash if possible, it is quite a huge increase in damage. A thing to note, this ability pulls you to the target ONLY when it is empowered, it doesn't seem like a big difference but that pull range is very convenient. Also, a very important, need to know fact which i didn't even know when I started playing Evelynn. Empowered Whiplash deals damage to any enemies it passes through whilst pulling to the initial target thus becoming an AOE ability, that, mixed with your AOE Last Caress can be very deadly in clumped up groups of enemies

Last Caress: Last Caress does massive damage, is AOE, and can be used as a wonderful disengage tool as it sends you back upon its use. Your ultimate is an execute meaning you want the enemy to be as low as possible before using this which I've found a good time to use it is when they are around 30% health. An amazing thing about this ultimate, is that when you use it, you become invincible for a very short period of time. This means that if you are about to die to an ability or a tower shot, you use Last Caress right before it hits you and you just saved your own life. This timing is not overly hard to execute but might take some practice.
Early Game
Evelynn's early game is definitely her weakest point in the game. Her Demon Shade doesn't give her camouflage yet, her damage is weak, and she's very squishy. So i'm going to give some tips on how to make her early game smoother. There are a couple different ways to play in the early game as Evelynn.

With Demon Shade you will almost always have around 50% health in the jungle in the early stages. This is why it's important to let your passive heal you to 50% after you're done your camps and then use your potion after to get to around 80% health for the gank. If you use the potion too early then you won't get the full perks of your passive heal.

I'll start with top.
1) What I tend to do when I start top is, Blue>Gromp>bot Scuttle>Wolves>entire top clear>back>look for gank, if you can gank a lane before backing, do so, I just tend to not be able to have a gankable lane at this point. This route is kinda risky because you will get low from blue>gromp, so if their jg is at bot scuttle at that time it gets very dangerous, I like this route because I get a scuttle out of it and good timers on my camp clears and am rarely punished. Getting a scuttle is important because it gives a large amount of xp and gives you some sustain from your jungle item lifesteal.

2) Clear is Blue>top Scuttle>top clear> bot clear> back> look for gank. This route is also kinda dangerous as their jungler might do the same thing and meet you top lane which you want to avoid as Evelynn is a terrible dueler especially lvl 2/3. Whichever route you take is up to you but i prefer #1

Now to bot
1) Clear is Red>Raptors>top Scuttle>Blue>potential gank top>rest of top camps>rest of bot camps>back. This route I tend to really like, For some reason the top side jungler typically doesn't seem to prioritize top scuttle as much so it's often quite free. Sometimes you'll get a gank top out of it, if not, you have a decent full clear anyways.

I don't really have a second clear for bot side because the above route almost always goes well or decent, which for evelynn's early game, is still good.

If possible get your top laner to ward river so you can tell if the enemy jungler is going for that scuttle and you can figure out how to play around them and avoid interaction with them as it will usually result in your death. Try to keep tabs on where the enemy jungler is whenever possible, if you can avoid him and survive early game even if you haven't gotten many or any kills, is still a win. You aren't supposed to shine yet so there's no need to worry if you have no kills or little assists at the 10 minute mark. You shine when you get items so try to power farm or play safe till you can get your power spike
Mid Game
At this point you are level 6 and your Demon Shade makes you invisible and really starts to kick in. I tend to avoid ganking mid lane because of the lack of cc they have. Early game and mid game Evelynn relies on your teammates cc to have a successful gank so I usually stick to top and bot lane for ganks. If you have completed your Stalker's Blade - Runic Echoes you are in a good spot, you can head bot lane and either almost or fully burst their adc with a good Allure. This time is when you should be looking all over for ganks because you are surprisingly strong right now and you should take advantage of it before everybody else catches up. Try to use your Demon Shade as best as you can and sneak into position in lane and ambush top or bot lane, never try to run from your jungle into immediately ganking a lane unless they are already initiating a fight. If laning phase is over and you aren't behind, try to sneak around the map and pick off squishies rotating to other lanes, if you can catch them isolated, it's a very free kill for you.
Late Game
This is a little difficult situation to understand what and when to do certain things. You will have already had your major power spikes and the enemies will be grouping. If possible always seek to catch out of position and isolated enemies, you are an assassin and very good at doing just that. Evelynn's Demon Shade and mobility makes you perfect for bursting people who aren't respecting you or your damage. You will need to wait for your team to initiate fights as you will most likely instantly die or ult before you can get your damage off. If you wait for your team to engage, you can hop in with your Empowered Whiplash which is AOE and your Last Caress which is also AOE allowing you to finish off any enemies that are low and effectively half health everyone else in your path. Hide behind your tanks, be patient and don't force anything as Evelynn in the late game. Look for a pick off and 5v4 or follow up on your team with some good AOE damage and look to burst them down while letting your team tank the hits.
Tips For Playing as Evelynn
- Sometimes it is preferred to proc Allure with an auto attack, which sounds crazy until you consider some things. People tend to expect you to proc Allure with Hate Spike so when you occasionally walk up and auto attack then with the charm, they are caught off guard because they aren't expecting you do to that. Another reason why activating Allure with an auto attack is quite good is because you can almost always follow up with getting the first hit of Hate Spike and getting the full damage from that.

- Your ultimate is rather important early on in the game. I tend to like to use my Last Caress bot lane as I can potentially get 2 kills with it because it's an AOE and bot lanes are usually more squishy than top lane. I typically get more value out of bot lane than any other lane when I use my ultimate. Given the somewhat long cooldown and how important your ultimate is, I find camping bot lane when ult is up to be very effective.

- I've mentioned this multiple times in this guide but I cannot stress how important patience is with Evelynn. Engaging too early or caught out because you decided to cut corners will lead to your immediate death and cause for a 4v5 which might make your team lose baron or the game. When fed you can be oddly aggressive but even then it takes some practice and the mentality to hold back. Just because you can one shot someone, doesn't mean you always should. If you can burst someone down and escape, you can gain health from Demon Shade and come back into the fight for more kills compared to killing a squishy and dying, making it a 1 for 1 trade.

- A thing to remember, just because you are an assassin, doesn't mean you can't do large amounts of damage to tanks. Evelynn has MR shred from Allure and % max HP damage from Empowered Whiplash making you a potentially a serious threat to tanks if you land the charm. You will not one shot the tank usually but you can effectively half health one with your full combo, which for an assassin vs a tank, is impressive
Hope This Was Helpful
Thanks for reading my guide, if you have any suggestions or advice please comment and let me know. I can always look to try and make it less wordy if that makes it too intimidating or too boring to keep up with. I'm new to this so i'm excited to jump into things and hopefully improve on this.

I will keep this guide updated with anything extra I can think to add.
