Hello, this is my first guide, so please bear with me! First of all, sona is my favorite AP carry, now most of you (not most, all of you) think Sona is all support. But she can destroy and dominate a 1v1 with anybody.
Pros / Cons
Amazing burst damage
Opponents get cocky and tend to be aggro in mid
Amazing heals late game, Probably more than support Sona's
Fairly good CC
Being bullied constantly that you can't go mid :(
Targeted first in teamfights
Burns mana quickly
What? fizz patch?! Well. masterys confused me a bit but I got it now,
Executioner Person: Why u get executioner u nub, sona isn't AD.
Me: Well, Power chord is still a right click spell to me because when you get silenced it doesn't work. Also because with your Q buff + your original 68 AD? [Not really sure but around there] It still deal some extra damage if there 40% below hp. So overall its pretty good.
Greater Mark of Magic Penetration
All AP carrys love Magic penetration.
Greater Seal of Replenishment
Mana regen, You can also get Greater Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration if you want. I use to prefer scaling mana but alot of people disagreed
Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power
For AP. Nothing else more to say.
Greater Quintessence of Scaling Ability Power
Even MORE AP! you will dominate early game with this.
Other possible runes.
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power Is possible. I will explain in the next chapter at how my runes beat this one.
Greater Quintessence of Magic Penetration If you want more magic pen than AP. this is a possible quint.
Greater Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration If you want mana regen instead of mana. as I discussed up above.
Greater Seal of Replenishment Also this if you want flat instead of scaling Mana regen.
IMPORTANT: Rune explanation.
Now, I did some math and found something out, people think Greater Quintessence of Ability Power Is better than Greater Quintessence of Scaling Ability Power for early game domination. And I say to you, NOPE! :D. I will explain in more detail now.
P.S this only is better if you take the runes Greater Glyph of Scaling Ability Power
Detailed Explanation: Now. Greater Quintessence of Ability Power gives 4.95 right? in 2 levels. You can pass 1 Greater Quintessence of Ability Power. And let me explain. gives 0.17 per level. If you have 9 of these, times it by 9 it gives 1.53 per level. gives 0.43 per level, times this by 3 and you get 1.29. Now, with 1.53 and 1.29 you add it which gives you 2.82. With 2.82 you times this by 2. Or add another 2.82, and guess what you get?
So, every 2 levels. You gain 1 Greater Quintessence of Ability Power and more. So, at level 6. You will have 16.92 AP AND MORE! And so, this ends the rune explanation why Greater Quintessence of Scaling Ability Power is better than Greater Quintessence of Ability Power
I am RE-writing this due to alot of changes in my build to make it better!
So, standard start out which is 2 Meki Pendant and 1 Health Potion too Tear of the Goddess and then grab your mobility which is Sorcerer's Shoes then for just everything is your Morello's Evil Tome then for survivability is your Rod of Ages and then for your Core item is Lich Bane then by now your goddess tear will be overlapping 1k. unless your fed with like 20-0 or something :P so you should grab Archangel's Staff to get that extra bonus from your goddess tear or now known as AA staff. Now for your final item. what every AP carry needs is Rabadon's Deathcap
Situational Items 4 AP 1 AD:
Your gonna get A Meki Pendant and 2 health potions. then finish up with Tear of the Goddess Now you either want a Mercury's Treads or Sorcerer's Shoes then get some AP Morello's Evil Tome and Now you either want Rylai's Crystal Scepter or Rod of Ages
then grab Archangel's Staff and then get either Lich Bane or Abyssal Mask And
Then finish up with Rabadon's Deathcap
Now I will be explaining the items, why they are good and etc.
Tear of the goddess. You get this for later on Archangel staff AKA AA staff. Every spell you use you gain 4 mana, so it is a great item.
Sorc shoes, nothing much to say about this. Medium speed and magic pen 20%.
Morellos. A Good item, your only CDR item besides your masterys. Decent AP, almost as much as Rylais. CDR 20%, and mana regen is a really nice combo!
Catalyst the Protector Catalyst, a later on for Rod of Ages. Gives decent survivability by giving mana and HP, and when you level up you get healed mana and health.
AA staff. A great item. Improves your mana and mana regen, the passive gives 3% of your maximum mana to AP. And has the same passive as Tear of the Goddess If you didn't max it out already.
Lich bane. It increases your AP, mana, movement speed, and Magic resist. Its passive is really a important item for Sona, this. Like archangel staff. Is a MUST item, Anyways the passive is : When you do a spell. your next normal attack will do 100% of your AP. This with Power Chord makes it a really strong item.
Rod of ages. This is a great item if you have AA staff, and still even a great item if you don't. Rod of ages increases sonas survivability by a lot. by giving HP and mana and AP. and every 1 minute you gain 2 AP, 18 HP, and 20 mana. So the mana will give AP from your AA staff, HP for living. and AP.
This item is simple. and a good finisher, 140 AP and its passive is increase your maximum AP by 30%.
Other possible items.
Switch between Rod of Ages
If you want CC, and instant 80 AP, though it doesn't give as much HP and no mana. Its still a good possible item between Rod of Ages. It gives you slow.
Switch between Morello's Evil Tome
This has less AP, mana regen, and CDR. But you can take Deathfire Grasp for its active.
Your Q. Your most important spell throughout the game, It increases your AD, AP, Your passive damage, and it has amazing harrass. you don't need to aim with it. its automatic. (And great damage but. everybody knows this).
Your W. This is great spell, good for surviving ignite. mordekais burn, and other effects. It also increases your magic resist and armor. Also heals (if you didn't know that). I don't use the passive cause it doesn't do amazing damage like your Q. But still, this is a great spell, Late game your gonna be healing 1000 in 10 seconds.
Your E. This is a good spell. But I max it out the last, even though it is a great escape spell and great passive. You will need the points for your Q and W.
Your R, and Ult. This is a amazing ult, what a ult should be like. Its like ignite but it stuns them. Great in teamfights. and great in 1v1's. and can save, also has a low cdr. This can be used as a initiator spell, For 1v1 and teamfights.
This is your maximum spell damage if you want to kill in 1 second. ( Flash) If in a 1v1. Enemy minions might be blocking you. so ull have to get close.-- - Your Q passive - Then - To power up your passive to 2 spells. then you use your and Q passive again . By then the fight should have ended.
Laning in mid
Now. Heres the important part, learning how to lane in mid. First of all, Hope you get a main midder. Like or or . Because they tend to be cocky and aggro, which is good. Cause then sona can spam her Q and harrass them alot. And another thing, so you can farm. once you reach your passive Power Chord to 2. Stop using spells. This way you can attack minions and farm. and when they get close, you use your Hymn of Valor and Power Chord. Its a great harrass combo, mainly cause if you have hymn of valor to level 5, which is 250 damage. Your power chord deals double that which is 500 + Your level. but if your opponent is low hp and defensive. You can use your Song of Celerity - Power Chord. That way you can slow and then harrass with your Q, alot of people just skip reading her passive. Or read it 1 time and don't fully understand it. Sonas passive is horribly strong, too strong.
Early game, Mid game, and late game.
This chapter is still being built so eh.
Early game is fairly easy. Get your items and go mid. If theres a jungler use your Q one time, that way you can leash blue (if he needs it) and have 2 on your passive. if there is a jungler but he doesn't need blue. Just go ahead and get your sona passive to 2 and wait for 1:30 aka Game beginning. Usually people/champions/etc like marching with there first minion so have your finger ready on your Q and right click the champion for the first early game harass. And last hitting or not last hitting....This is your choice, I don't last hit cause pushing is hard for sona early game cause she can't spam her spells yet, but its your choice. Once you back up to pool keep your eye on the timer. around 6:00 and 9:00 is ganking time if theres a jungler. Also don't be aggresive if your Q is only level 1. you can start being aggresive once its level 3 or so, also If you think your going to be hit by a high level spell, quickly tap W and it will reduce the damage cause of the mr/armor/heal buff. I don't know what else to say early game so. Thats it for now.
Mid game. by now you should have some AP and a ult. So once your enemy mid is mia. If your still full health and everything. You can go out and gank top or bot, then use the skill sequence to grab a kill or so, and if you have gold/sec quints you can start buying a **** load of wards around the place. I don't have gold/sec quints so i don't do this, but its always a choice.
Im dedicating a chapter here to explain how strong sonas passive is. First, you have to understand the situation. Lets say if your about to gank somebody. You can slow with E and give advantage to your jungle ganker. Lets say your ally is running away and is on low hp. You can use your W to heal your ally and aim at the pursuer to reduce the damage hes about to deal/Or you can use your E to slow him down and speed up your ally to run away, and go for the kill yourself. and your Q is just mainly for damage. theres no situational explanation for it.
Counters for AP sona that I have encountered
Now, counters for mid sona. I haven't played much yet but, I will list the ones that. if of Even skill. and 1v1. The counter would win.
Is one of them, reason? Yoricks abilitys spawn ghouls or w/e. Those can act as meat shields for your Power Chord and Hymn of Valor Powerchord for. its hard to aim your cursor on yorick when hes chasing with his ghouls. And Sonas Q targets the closest units, So the ghouls will take the damage. Not yorick.
Thanks to ImaFreakDude for helping me alittle bit. Also, ill be updating here alot to show you my stats when i play mid sona, And if i forgot to mention. I do this in ranked play. Though its harder to get mid there cause there all so serious xDD.
This was a 4v5. then it became 3v5. even if it was 3v5. I was still mid, so it was still 1v1, and towers didn't get destroyed for a while. (They held off surprisingly well xD) I fought off kogmaw and made him 0-3. twitch was a constant ganker on me. we traded 1 kill and death and i got away with killing him a few tunes. (panths ult was alittle off). And there sion got me once when i was trying to steal blue, Stupid move on my part. anyways
This was a great game, even though I got legendary there was no feeders until the end (when they started to die alot.)
