Mortality is weakness~Choose your Style~Malzahar Guide

By Rermo99

LISTEN TO ME, VOIDLINGS AND BARONS! My summoner's name is UtsukushiiSempai and this is my second guide on Mobafire! This guide is about my most played champion, Malzahar. Malzahar is a summon mage that has his place in mid lane as, in my sight, the strongest mid laner of all time. This guide will help you learn everything you need to know about the aids bringer.

Should you trust a Malzahar main? No, not when he's on the enemy team. But hey, I'm not on the enemy team! I'm here to help! I will guide you into the depth of the void and show you how magical it can be to play Malzahar.

Ready to bring the void's madness on your enemy? Then lets get started

The only song you can listen when playing Malzahar or reading this guide Back to Top
Two Builds, One Guide Back to Top
In this guides, you'll be able to find two different builds for Malzahar; one CDR/Mana Sustain based build and one Full Damage based build. You can either choose the way you prefer to play, but you can also merge the two build to adapt them to your style of play.
Feel free to post a comment on how you build your kit on Malzahar to share with everyone the void madness!

Let's head to the first chapter.

About Malzahar

Malzahar is for me the best mid laner for many reason. He got everything in his kit to dominate the mid lane in every game you play him.

Fisrt of all, Malzahar gets a big advantage from his passive Void Shift that provides him a protection against crowd control. In mid lane, many mages get advantage by immobilising you or by slowing you and then burst you down. While this passive is active, your opponent will try to poke you with a basic attack to remove your passive, but most of the mage have low range on their basic attacks, which force them to get closer to you and making you able to kill them.

Then, Malzahar has 2 damage over time spell, one burst damage spell and one summon spell, where only the busrt one is a skill shot, while the others are click-to-win and minion spawn. While his spells are easy to put on your opponent, all you have to do is dodging any spells or abilities while your enemy is burning down.

Also, Malzahar has high scaling abilities and all his abilities are easy to cast on your opponent. This will allows you to dominate your lane and you'll be able to destroy any laner.

Early Game (Levels 1 to 6)

Malzahar's early game is based on getting the fastest as you can your Lost Chapter. This item cost 1300g, this means you have to starts recalling at 1280g. Getting the Lost Chapter is very important for malzahar because he has a lot of big mana cost and cooldown early game. Since it gives now 10% CDR and a bunch of mana and mana regen (20% of maximum mana upon lv up), it will help you doing whatever you want to do after buying it.

Malzahar is really strong in laning phase, but if you want to max your efficiency, you'll need to farm with your abilities. Using the combo E on a minion > W > Q to reset your E, except for the first time you do it, you will ALWAYS have the maximum number of minion spawning from your W (1 stack with E, 2 voidling with W, 1 stack with Q, 1 stack with E, 3 voidling with W and then).
It will cost a lot of mana to do this (a LOT), so first you must be sure to kill every minion with your E on it, so it can spread on another minion and you can gain a bit of mana back.
That's why getting the Lost Chapter very quickly is important. You'll get 300 more mana from the Lost Chapter, and this will give you 6 more mana per minion kill with your E on it. More mana sustain is the best. You'll also get a bunch of mana each time you lv up, so you'll be able to stay in lane for as long as you'll be alive! The cream of the crop is that they added 10% CDR to the item, and this guide is based on a CDR/Mana sustain build. How convenient ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

All this will allow you to put huge pressure mid lane and you'll either prevent your opponent to recall, prevent them to roam, but also create a bunch of opportunities for you to hang out with your army of fluffy voidling (especially with Snowday Malzahar skin).

While you are in your early game, focus only on your farm, and if your opponent get caught by your E after killing a minion, you can try to hit him with your Q, but keeping your mana for farm is really worth before you hit 6.

Mid Game (10 to 25 minutes)

It's here that the real fun begins for you and the nightmare starts for the enemy team. At this moment, you'll have 35% CDR. Yes, 20% with Archangel's Staff + 10% with Transcendence +
5% with Cosmic Insight. With this cooldown reduction and enough knowledge about Malzahar, you'll be able to let your E Malefic Visions forever on your opponent. Let me Explain :

Level 10, your skill point will be distribute like this (1Q, 3W, 5E, 1R).
- E will have 7s Base CD;
- W will have 8s Base CD;
- Q will have 6s Base CD.
With your 35% CDR, it will be like this :
- E will have 4.55s CD;
- W will have 5.2s CD;
- Q will have 3.9 CD.

Your E burns your target for 4 second and can be RESET if the target is hit by your Q or R. Let put it together. You hit your target with E and summon your voilding, wait ~3s, cast your Q, and hit. Your E reset, and has around 1s cooldown left. After 3s, you recast your E and your Q is already up to continue until you have no mana left. But with the Archangel's Staff, you'll have 25% of your mana spent refunded. Which means you can abuse even more of this combo.
It's really OP and you can also finish your target with your R, which also reset your E.

With the "Full damage Malzahar" rune page and item set, the combo will be the same, but you'll have to be more careful about it, because you'll have less mana regen and higher cooldowns. However, the huge damage spike you'll get from Electrocute, the Luden's Echo and your Sorcerer's Shoes will be so high and funny that you won't even notice the differences in mana costs and cooldowns, because your opponent will die a lot faster.

Lets put the combos aside and let focus on your position. YOU'LL BE THE BEST TARGET FOR ANY GANKS FROM ENEMY JUNGLER. Why? Your pushing power is too strong and really hard to control. Also you are Malzahar. No ones want to fight a fed Malzahar.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO what do you do when your lane is pushed and your opponent is staying undertower because you scared him too much time? It's called *Sparkles* Roaming~~~ *Sparkles*!!!

How to roam with Malzahar? Go to the Bot or Top lane, Ult someone. Your team will get the kill. You are happy. You can go back to lane.

There's more to your mid game. With the "CDR/Mana sustain Malzahar" runes and items, your CDR is enough high to do your infinite combo, you can litterally solo each dragons. You won't take any damage because your voidling will be closer to it than you, so they will tank the damage. The same is for the rift herald.

Late Game (30 minutes or more)

At this moment of the game, you are supposed to have your core build completed ( Archangel's Staff, Rylai's Crystal Scepter and Liandry's Torment). This means everyone melts when you are attacking them. But there's more to malzahar's gameplay. Seriously.

Each ability you cast have it's own place in every team fight. Your game won't be resumed to burn anyone down.
First, your Q Call of the Void will be used to silence their mid laner while the fights begins and for as long as the fight is burning. You'll have a very low cooldown on it with all your CDR. Your ult MUST be kept for the ADC in team fights. But when the fight is about one team getting the Baron , always ult the enemy jungler so he won't be able to smite the objectives. If their jungle is already dead, then use your head to spot the most dangerous enemy before he make a heroic baron steal and ult him.

Your E will be your key ability to guide your voidling. Don't use it as your main source of damage, your main source of damage is your voidlings and you have to redirect them on the big damage of their team.

One last thing before we get to the next chapter. Your voidling may be very cute and strong, you'll have to use them as a meat shield. They can block so many skill shots and can save your life at anytime. They are your only best friend when you play Malzahar.
Malzahar and the Canon Winion Back to Top
The Canon Minion is worth a lot of gold, everyone know that. But did you know that it could also make you win lane? Haha, well I'll explain myself a bit on that point!

EZ Tower, EZ Life

Statistically, the canon minion will always take max health damage from turret, from 14% to 8% depending on the game's timer, so they can always take 7 to 12 tower shot before getting killed. While towers have a base attack speed of 0.83 shots per second, the canon minion can tank the tower for more than 7 second if nothing else is in the way.

Now you know the basic of the plan. Getting a canon minion wave with nothing in its way to tank the tower while you hit it. "But Malzahar is still a mage, he won't get a big adventage from that canon minion." Well that's where you are wrong.
Malzahar doesn't have only 7 minion in it's wave, he can litterally get a 10 minion wave with Void Swarm!

Usually, Malzahar's voidling are automatically targeted by the tower if there are multiple target available for the tower. However, if they enter the tower's range while the tower is already hitting something else, they will be free until the first target die.

Now you probably get it, right? If a canon minion can tank tower shots for more than 7 to 12 seconds and malzahar's voidling can hit the tower for 5−64.5 (based on level) (+ 12 / 14 / 16 / 18 / 20) (+ 40% bonus AD) (+ 20% AP) magic damage with 0.67−0.89 attack speed (based on level), one can surely do a tons of damages to the tower, but don't forget you'll have 3 voidling at the same time hitting the tower!

How to get that OP Minion wave?

Well, to get canon minion to the tower without anything in its way, you must have no enemy champion in your lane. There's two way to do that. First, you kill him. Simple, right? you only have to syncronize your kill with the canon minion wave and bam! Free tower! However, when you are pushing a tower like this you are vulnerable to gank. You must choose a moment where you know that either the enemy jungle AND you laner won't be in the way.

It's sad, but the best moment for that is when your laner roam to another lane. Most of the time, if the enemy mid laner is ganking bot lane, the enemy jungle too will be there. This means you'll usually follow your laner to avoid the botlane to get killed. In my case, I always get first tower and once you get the first tower, it is 100% more easy and efficient to roam and kill. So I usually let my laner roam 1 time alone, I get the first tower, and then I catch him up with a lot more gold than him and all my teamates are like "YEAY MALZAHAR IS FED".

In the end, I don't suggest you never follow the enemy mid laner when he roam to get that double bot, but if you see a canon minion coming to your lane at that same time, and the enemy first tower isn't broken yet, I promise it will be more worth to get the first tower.
Runes Back to Top
The runes are basically what's gonna decides if you win your lane or not. And that is for any champion, not only for Malzahar mid.

There is usually multiple ways to build your runes page for each champion, Malzahar is good either with Aery or Electrocute. That why he can be played with a bunch of different styles.

Let's get to the point now.

First, there are 5 different path you could take :

For the first build of this guide, I selected Sorcery as my first path because Malzahar is very much dependent on his mana and on CDR. Going sorcery will brings a lot of mana viability and interaction to Malzahar and will helps YOU a lot in mastering the Void's favourite prophet. I selected Inspiration as my secondary path for the same reason, CDR and mana related content.

Sorcery :

Summon Aery : Your attacks and abilities send Aery to a target, damaging enemy champions or shielding allies. Aery cannot be sent out again until she returns to you.
Damage : 10-40 (based on level)(+0.1 AP and 0.15 bonus AD)

Summon Aery

Manaflow Band : Hitting an enemy champion with an ability permanently increases your maximum mana by 25, up to 250 mana.
After reaching 250 bonus mana, restore 1% of your missing mana every 5 seconds.
Cooldown : 15 seconds

Manaflow Band

Transcendence : Gain 10% CDR when you reach level 10.
Each percent of CDR exceeding the CDR limit is convertedto an adaptive bonus of 1.2 AD or 2 AP.

Transcendence

Scorch : Your next ability hits sets champion on fire dealing 15 - 35 bonus magic damage based on level after 1s.
Cooldown : 10 seconds

Scorch

Inspiration :

Biscuit Delivery : Biscuit Delivery: Gain a Total Biscuit of Everlasting Will at 3:00, 6:00, 9:00 and 12:00.
Biscuits restore 15% of your missing health and mana. Consuming or selling any Biscuit increases your mana cap by 40 mana permanently.

Biscuit Delivery

Cosmic Insight : +5% CDR.
+5% Max CDR.
+5% Summoner Spell CDR.
+5% Item CDR.

Cosmic Insight

For the second build of this guide, I selected domination as my first path because Malzahar with busrt damage is really strong and also really annoying. Going domination will brings a lot of bonus damage to your combo that you won't necessary get with sorcery and it will helps YOU a lot in killing the Void's favourite prophet's enemies. I selected precision as my secondary path because you still need some mana back from your kills. And you know, more damage is more damage.

Domination :

Electrocute : Hitting a champion with 3 separate attacks or abilities within 3s deals bonus adaptive damage.
Damage : 30 - 180 (+40% Bonus AD, +25% AP) damage.
Cooldown : 25 - 20s

Electrocute

Cheap Shot : Damaging champions with impaired movement or action deals 10 - 45 bonus true damage (based on level).
Cooldown : 4s
Activate on damage occuring after the impairment.

Cheap Shot

Zombie Ward : Takedown on enemy wards cause frendly Zombie wards to sprout from their corpses. Gain an adaptive bonus of 1.2 AD or 2 AP for every zombie ward spawned, up to 10. After spawning 10 zombie wards, additionally gain 10 adaptive force. Zombie wards are visible, last for 120 seconds and do not count towards your ward limit.

Zombie Ward

Eyeball Collection : Collect eyeballs for champion takedown. Gain an adaptive bonus of 1.2 AD or 2 AP, per eyeball collected.
Upon completing your collection at 10 eyeballs, additionnaly gain an adaptive bonus of 6 AD or 10 AP. Collect 1 eyeball per champion takedown.

Eyeball Collection

Ultimate Hunter : Your ultimate gain 5% reduced cooldown, plus an additional 4% per Bounty hunter stack.
Earn a Bounty hunter the first time you get a takedown each enemy champion.

Ultimate Hunter (8.11 new rune)

Precision

Presence of Mind : Takedown 20% of your maximum mana and refund 10% of your ultime's cooldown.

Presence of Mind

Coup de Grace : Deal 8% more damage to champions who have less than 40% health.

Coup de Grace

Spicy Shards :

This is a new thing that gives you the opportunity to choose some basic stats to start with in your games. This means you can now go with the runes above and still get a dang amount of resistance like armor and magic resist. Don't do it. I know you want to but don't.

Those are the shards you should take with Malzahar, no matter which build you are taking :

  • 10 Adaptive (10 AP in your case)
  • 10 Adaptive (10 AP in your case)
  • 6 Magic Resist

Your two first shards are going to be the Adaptive one, because you will need that damage over that 1% CDR level 1, the 9% Attack Speed, or those Armor and MR stats.

At last, you are in mid lane, where a bunch of mages parties up to burst everyone in the enemy team. Especially you. But sometime they give that job to an AD champion, in which case you should take some armor instead.
Items Back to Top

Everything in this build is about saying "NO!" to your opponent. He wants to heal himself? NO! MORELLONOMICON! He wants to buy Magic Resist? NO! VOID STAFF! He wants to buy health? NO! LIANDRY'S TORMENT! He wants to escape? NO! RYLAI'S CRYSTAL SCEPTER!

CDR/Mana sustain Malzahar
Starting Item
The Doran's Ring is your starting item. The doran's ring gives the little amounth of mana everyone like, the little amounth of HP that everyone lik... Nah seriously the only things that matter is that is gives you enought health to survive longer during your early game. While you still try to manage your mana, it will also help you giving you 5 mana per 5 seconds. Last hitting minions can also be difficult (kill me please) and doran's ring is the perfect item for that!
First Back
Lost Chapter is the most important item for your early game and the only item that makes malzahar viable early game. First of all, it gives you 40 AP. You are a mage. Yeay. Then, it gives you 300 mana. This means 6 more mana every time you kill a unit infected by your Malefic Visions. Also, it gives you 10% CDR, which is very good on Malzahar early game. It will help you doing your combo earlier in the game.
Tear of the Goddess can be either your first item on first back or second item depending on your situation. It will be your first item if you are forced to back before you can get your Lost Chapter. By boosting your maximum mana by 250 to 1000 and by reducing the mana cost of your abilities, it will be perfect to come back on a bad early game with a huge advantage on the mana sustain and the laning farm. Your combo will be castable more and more time, and each time will increase your maximum mana. It a good item to get on Malzahar, and I strongly suggest to take it in a bad matchup or when a evil enemy jungle succeed at an early gank.
Core Item
Archangel's Staff is your first item. This item is the best first item for Malzahar because it gives the 4 thing you need on Malzahar: CDR, Flat Mana, Manacost reduction and huge amount of AP. Getting the 20% CDR of this item will get you with your boots, runes and level 10 to 45% CDR. It gives a starting amounth of flat mana of 650 mana. This means you'll get 13 more mana for every unit you kill while they are affected by your E. But don't be fooled by my basic maths, You also gain 8 maximum mana every time you cast a spell (max 3 time every 12 second) because it gains a mana charge every 4 second that is consume upon casting a spell and giving you 8 maximum mana. You'll end up with 1400 additionnal mana from this item. THIS IS A LOT. Finally, you'll get an amounth of AP equal to 1% (3% when transformed into Seraph's Embrace) of your maximum mana and a very nice active shield when it is transformed.
Malzahar wants to bring the void's madness to everyone and for this, he will need to gives a lot of Malefic Visions to his enemy. Sorcerer's Shoes are really strong on him but I won't say they are the best. Ionian boots of lucidity are really strong on him, since they gives a huge amount of CDR and also summoner's spell CDR, that you also get with Cosmic Insight. Building those right after your Archangel's Staff will brings you, at level 10 with
Transcendence, to 45% CDR, which is really broken level 10.
This one is the most important item. Liandry's Torment burns your opponent for 1.5% of their maximum health each seconds, over 3 seconds. The burn damage is increase to 2.5% to any target with impaired movement (slow, stun, root, suppress). It will add a 2.5% of target's maximum health damage to each tics of damage on your E, your Ult and your voidling's AutoAttacks when matched with Rylai's Crystal Scepter. Also, it's passive increased your damage to up to 10% more damage when damaging an enemy champion. Since your E affect it's target for 4 seconds and that you can rest it with your Q and R, it is pretty easy to get the full damage out of it. It's the best damage focused item you can take on Malzahar.
Rylai's Crystal Scepter is your third pick for the prophet of the void. Malzahar has no escape and he's very slow, but getting a Rylai's on him is really perfect since it procs the slow for 5s with your E and it will helps you chase enemy, escaping enemy and even tanking a bits because of the health it gives. Very good item on Malzahar.
Late game Possibility
Morellonomicon is a very interresting encyclopedia that will helps you learn about physics and chemistry and, nah i'm kidding ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) This tome has all you wants late game on Malzahar. It gives you the little amounth of magic penetration you need to piss off any squishies and it gives grievous wound to every enemy you hit with magic damage, which is very strong if you use your Q correcly.
Zhonya's Hourglass is the best late game item you'll take with Malzahar. Can save you from Enchanted Crystal Arrow, Ace in the Hole, Whirling Death, Trueshot Barrage, Cannon Barrage, Curtain Call, Super Mega Death Rocket!, Requiem, Final Spark, Noxious Trap, Rite of the Arcane, Mega Inferno Bomb and Death Mark! You know, all the spells that make you cry everytime they kill you. It also gives a bit of armor to be stronger against their fed ADC.
Full Damage Malzahar
Starting Item
The Dark Seal is a great starting item for full damage Malzahar because since patch 8.9, the Doran's Ring doesn't gives you the beautiful synergy with your E anymore. However, the Dark Seal is here to save the day with his 100 flat mana. It will get you to not far from 10 mana regen with your E at level one, which means if all the first wave died under your E, it is fully refunded. Also, you are going for damage here, so getting that extra AP from kills and assist just transform you a little more quickly into terminator.
First Back
Lost Chapter is the most important item for your early game and the only item that makes malzahar viable early game.
Sorcerer's Shoes is what you are going to take with this build because you don't care about utility. You want damage. You can even take them at your first back if you are against a Lux or Xerath. They are very strong to deal with squish champ, but against a Galio or Cho'Gat, I suggest to still take the Ionian Boots of Lucidity.
Core Item
Rylai's Crystal Scepter is your first pick for the prophet of the void. Malzahar has no escape and he's very slow, but getting a Rylai's on him is really perfect since it procs the slow for 5s with your E and it will helps you chase enemy, escape enemy and even tanking a bits because of the health it gives. BUT the point of picking it first is because you are greddy with full damage malzahar, and you have the rune Cheap Shot. Getting the rylai's right after your lost chapter will allow you to proc it on any ability you cast, and since the cooldown of that rune is 4s, you'll even be able to proc it twice by reseting your E with your Q on a target. Very good item on Malzahar, and very big synergy with Full damage malzahar.
Luden's Echo is your main burst item for this build, but you'll have to take it as your second item because of the synergy between Cheap Shot and the Rylai's Crystal Scepter. Maybe you'll have difficulties with your mana, but taking the Luden's Echo will bring you a higher bonus AP than the Archangel's Staff in early game, but it will also give you a very good additional damage on your abilities that you won't get with the other items.
It the best damage focused item you can take on Malzahar.
Late game Possibility
Morellonomicon is a very interresting encyclopedia that will helps you learn about physics and chemistry and, nah i'm kidding ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) This tome has all you wants late game on Malzahar. It gives you the little amounth of magic penetration you need to piss off any squishies and it gives grevious wound to every enemy you hit with magic damage, which is very strong if you use your Q correcly.
Void Staff is the item you'll take against tanks. There is a lot of things we can do when the enemy team got a lot of tanks. You can either AFK, Feed or buy a Void Staff. Tanks = Void Staff. That's simple. Just do it. It will not only helps you dealing with the enemy Yasuo who have bough a Mercurial Scimitar by shredding his magic resist by 40%, but it will also helps you deal with that full MR Galio.
Hextech Gunblade is a must take when the game length is over 50 mins and that you are full build. Sell your boots and buy it. It's just one of the funniest item for Malzahar late game because the only AoE you have is the Nullzone under your ult. The 15% of damage convert to healing doesn't reduce to damage over time like your E. You'll get a lot of damage on your Winion because yes, they scale AP and AD, and you'll have a 5th ability called "Hextech Gunblade's active". Seriously a new ability that deals around 250 + 30% AP is always welcome in a full damage build.
Rabadon's Deathcap helps you dealing damage. It gives you 120 +40% of your bonus AP in AP. It is a strong item for all mage, but the only reason why I usually keep it out of the build is it's price and build path. All it does is giving you a huge amount of AP, but it is super expensive and you build it from 2 Needlessly Large Rod, which isn't the item you'll look for while you are based on specific stats.
Spellbinder will be a good pick against high range mage. They usually have a lot of poke, which means they will cast a lot of time, making this item to stack. Also, it's active not only gives you AP, but also movement speed, which can help you dodge some skill shots and get closer to them. It will also gives you a huge bonus damage on all of your ability late game and it is super easy to stack with your combo.
