Things to Know

Check out my whole new Maokai Build ! One of the first on mobafire.Maokai, Knock on wood

Credits to a more agressive Renekton Build ( And much more popular in lower Elos ) : Dubcore's DPS build

After having been using Dubcore's build for a couple of weeks, I have been increasingly irritated at the lack of Tankiness of Renekton. He was designed as being a brutal melee DPS'er capable of dishing out damage while being an hybrid between an off-tank and a carry. Yes, before you read more, you have to know that Renekton's is by no means and will never be a carry. He's meant to receive more damage than carry-ers while inflicting higher pain than tanks.

Defense : Tank > Off-Tank > Carry
Offense : Carry > Off-Tank > Tank

Renekton would be between Carry and Off-Tank if we follow Riot's description. But personally, the current Renekton is more of a pure off-tank.

Tank Examples : Malphite, Amumu, Rammus
Description : Tanks are meant to receive as much damage as they can so that the other inflict the damage they lack. They have skills helping them to absorb damage ( Ex : Shen's feint, Amumu's Passive)
Strategy : "I will protect my allies as long as I can and hope they can slay the enemy. If I can, I will also help my carry grant kills"

Off-Tank Examples : Garen, Mundo, Mordekaiser
Description : Off-Tank have higher health, armor and mr than most champions while not being centered on defense. They have mostly offensive based skills yet invest in tank gear. Many players considers off-tanks the best champions in the game because of the current meta-game ("No matter how hard you hit, late game is more about how hard you can take")
Strategy : "My job is to harass the enemy enough to be a danger while not pushing myself directly into the line of fire."

Carry Examples : Master Yi, Miss Fortune, Tristana
Description : Carry have higher damage and critical output than most champions but are also squishier in most cases. Their role is to inflict as much damage as possible while staying alive and thus "carry" the team to victory.
Strategy : "My job is to kill the enemy champions while staying out of direct danger"

Renekton's Current State in LOL

Trivia : Before release, Renekton was supposed to be "The Eater of Souls" instead of "Butcher of the Sands" . He was probably renamed because none of his skills matched his title ( He has no soul-related skill )

Renekton is not what he should be right now. He suffered from enormous nerfs prior to his release. Some suspect this was a plan by Riot to make Renekton's opening sales higher. Plot or not, It must have worked because of his great popularity at patch release.

The nerfs he has suffered makes him much squishier than you would imagine a giant crocodile wearing one of - or the biggest - the biggest weapon in LOL history being. His early game is also lacking as his damage output is very low at starting level compared to other champion. Finally, he suffers from nearly worst cooldowns out of any mana-free champion. He ABSOLUTELY lives on cooldown reduction items.

He also hit a wall of brick when he entered ranked games
. He simply didn't have the tankiness needed to be able to dish out his damage even though it's DPS was tremendous. Let's face it, Renekton is not, I say again, a CARRY like Master Yi. His mechanics are way too rough to allow the smooth flow damage-based heroes like Miss Fortune lives on.

This is why I created this build. I believe I have found a right middle between tankiness and DPS to make this Renekton build a fearsome and annoying opponent. Tank Renekton couldn't work because he dealt no damage and has no defensive skills. Carry Renekton couldn't work because he was too squishy to inflict a lower damage than pure Carries.

I aim for the middle, as you will see.

PATCH NOTES
* Cull the Meek
o Cooldown changed to 8 seconds from 12/11/10/9/8
o Base damage increased to 60/90/120/150/180 from 40/70/100/130/160
o Attack Damage ratio increased to 0.8 from 0.6
o Healing reduced to 7.5% from 15% (Fury-enhanced heal unaffected)
o Champion healing increased to 4x from 3x
* Ruthless Predator cooldown reduced to 13/12/11/10/9 from 14/13/12/11/10
* Slice and Dice armor reduction changed to 15/17.5/20/22.5/25% from 10/15/20/25/30
* General
o Health per level increased to 87 from 82
o Base health increased to 513 from 508
o Armor per level increased to 3.8 from 3.2
o Base armor increased to 19 from 17.2
* Fixed a bug where Renekton was gaining bonus attack damage while wounded

Extraordinary news. Renekton is now a lot more how he should have been in the first place, a DPS offtank. He is still in the niche I've been talking about, more focused on damage while being beefier than Carries.

Runes

Greater Mark of DesolationAs most DPS Champions, you will need intense Armor Penetration in order to break your enemy's armor into pieces. It is very important and will make a huge difference.

I'm sorry but this champion simply can't live without cooldown reduction. If you can't afford many runes, let met tell you that flat CD runes are the best you can get for Renekton.

This is situational but has proved valuable. Renekton doesn't have a high MR with this build, and most teams always have one or two AP users. The extra MR will come in handy. I use /Lvl runes because they give much higher bonuses in late game.

Greater Quintessence of Desolation Extra Penetration for more pleasure. That's what she said last night, so...

Masteries

Alright I won't waste too much time here, since we got an awesome cheat sheet. Basicly, you are investing in offensive masteries to lower your cooldowns, get your critical chance up and augment as much as possible your damage output. The rest goes into defensive masteries to beef you up a little more. Enough she said. Here are the ones to remember.

: Extremely important to full out, as you will maximize the precious armor penetration you live on.

: Bringing Renekton without this baby is a sin, and god kills a kitten every time you do it...you monster -____-

Summoner Spells

Now this is the part that applies to the player and less to the champion. While some spells, like are totally a waste on Renekton, it is up to you to decide which one fits you best. I will give you my tips and my choices, the rest is your decision. I'm not gonna tell you a combo and say it's godly, it would be a lie.

I use this spell a lot and it is my favorite. I have learnt to use it both for offensive and defensive purposes. I don't care people saying that Renekton has a built-in flash, I use it and I like it. It saved my *** so many times I can't even count anymore. A must-have for me, and preferable over Ghost

If you don't use Flash, this is a very good solution. Renekton never gets very fast with this build ( And theorically doesnt need to due to his gameplay style ) thus you could use the extra speed to catch up enemies.

A very interesting choice for any Melee Champions, you can't go wrong with exhaust. Again, some may say that exhaust is a waste since Renekton has an instant stun.

I usely use this spell when using casters, but I see so reason it wouldn't work on Renekton, seeing his damage output is lower than it should be right now.

I'm not sure about this one, but that's because I use Flash all the time, denying the use for a de-nerfer. Could be useful when paired with Ghost.

I have seen this in ranked play and cannot deny the usefullness of this spell late-game. Pair this up with a guardian angel and you are very-very hard to shut down.

Not the best idea to me. The Q of Renekton already acts as an healer. It's up to you.

Can't go wrong with this, since Renekton is slow and clumsy.

Other spells shouldn't be considered as they are more of a support role.

Renekton's Skills Analysis and Tactics

This is not really a passive but a whole new energy system. Every auto-attacks grants Renekton a bonus of 5 Fury, and Q grants a maximum of 25 Fury at once. Once you hit 50/100, Furious state is activated and you may use the Furious effect of a skill, consuming 50 Fury. While heavily wounded, Renekton gains Fury much more.

Renekton swings his blade, dealing moderate physical damage to all targets around him and heals for a small portion of the damage dealt. If he has over 50 Fury, his damage and heal are increased.

Renekton swings his blade, dealing 40/70/100/130/160 (+) physical damage to nearby enemies and gains 10% of the damage dealt as Health, up to 50/75/100/125/150. Each hit grants 5 Fury, up to 25. Enemy champions grant 200% additional health recovery.

50 Fury Bonus: Damage increased to 60/105/150/195/240 (+). Heal percent increased to 15%, up to 150/225/300/375/450.

Cost
No Cost or 50 Fury
Range

Analysis : CtM is a very important skill yet a very bizarre one.(TRIVIA : It used to be called Tyrant's Reach but was changed at release . No explanation for the rename was given.) The most similar skill to this one is the flourish skill of Akali. The difference is that Renekton's skill is much more clumsier and heals life depending of the enemies caught in the strike. The truth is that CtM is much more complicated than Akali's. In reality, it's a five-hit strike all around Renekton. Each of those strikes can inflict damage and make Renekton gain 5 fury / hit. In fury mode, damage and healing is much better.
Tactics
When striking an enemy, a good way to maximize your damage would be to go slight on the side of him instead of face to face. Most players, seeing the bulk of Renekton, will either attack directly or move forward or backward. This increases the chance of him running in another of Renekton's hits.

Also , it isnt a necessity to press Q as soon as you finish your E+W combo. You may want reposition yourself for better damage. YOU HAVE TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT that Q will leave you still for a brief moment, so if you are chasing, Q might not be the best idea if you aren't sure to slay your prey with it. Save it !

CtM is also a luring skill because of his healing. You can use it to trick other into thinking you are weak and then heal a lot by swinging Q to their faces. Be careful though because Renekton's current heal is quite low.

Renekton slashes his target twice dealing moderate physical damage and stuns them for 0.75 seconds. If Renekton has over 50 Fury, he slashes his target three times dealing high physical damage and stuns them for 1.5 seconds.

Renekton's next attack strikes twice dealing physical damage (10/30/50/70/90 + 150/150/150/150/150% of his Attack Damage) and stuns for 0.75 seconds. Each hit applies on-hit effects.

50 Fury Bonus: Instead, Renekton attacks three times dealing physical damage (15/45/75/105/135 + 225/225/225/225/225% of his Attack Damage) and stuns his target for 1.5 seconds.

Cost
No Cost or 50 Fury
Range
300

Analysis : RP is the most important of Renekton's skills, and is what makes him dangerous : an unblockable hit. In fact, 2 hits that count as auto-attack and thus trigger On-hit effects such as the Black Cleaver Debuff or the Blood Razor Health hit. The attack gets much more dangerous when you hit with Fury on, making it a much longer stun and 3 hits instead of 2, which could make the difference between life and death.
Tactics
W is part of the R-E-W-Q-E battle combo, and his the one that should be covered with Fury AT ALL TIMES. It's the most dangerous-deadly-gameBreaking skill Renekton has under Fury effect, so USE IT UNDER FURY OR JUST STAY IN BASE OK ? You'll sleep on the couch tonight.

Slice and Dice - Renekton dashes dealing damage to units along the way. Empowered, Renekton deals bonus damage and reduces the armor of units hit.

Slice: Renekton dashes, dealing 45/75/105/135/165 (+) physical damage. Hitting an enemy grants the ability to use Dice for 4 seconds.

Dice: Renekton dashes dealing 45/75/105/135/165 (+) physical damage.

Dice - 50 Fury Bonus: Damage increased to 67.5/112.5/157.5/202.5/247.5 (+). Enemies hit have 10/15/20/25/30 reduced Armor for 4 seconds.

Cost
No Cost or 50 Fury
Range
25000

Analysis : SnD is what gives Renekton a unique taste, a unique style of gameplay. Basicly, Slice is a simple dash that deals damage. The twist is that if you hit an enemy in your dash, you gain the ability the dash again in a time spectrum of four seconds. Let me tell you that this skill is the weakest damage-wise ability Renekton has, but is still very important for Renekton's chasing ability. Under fury, Dice will reduce enemy armor and deal more damage.

Tactics
SnD is perhaps the most hard skill to master of Renekton, and often new players fail with it...Badly. Phreak has announced this skill to be an harassing tool, but depending on the ELO you are playing against, it gets very frustrating, just like Kennen's Rush. You can be stopped between dashed. You can be stunned, snared, knocked, slowed. Everything. Without Kennen's speed bonus. SnD is a chase/gank tool and not an harasser unless the enemy can't stop you. Be very careful, and remember small walls can be dashed through.

SnD has also a twist nobody ever talks about, and it's called "Furious Slicing". If you are an intelligent Renekton player, you will want to keep your fury as high as you can while laning. Slice is the only skill you can use without consuming any Fury energy. If you DON'T use Dice, you will not spend the 50 Fury cost. This allows for even more careful harassing or closing in for combo.

Keep in mind SnD deals very low damage even in late game. Thus, it should NOT be used in the middle of a team fight to inflict UNKILLING damage. Should the battle be lost, you will have also wasted your (maybe) only chance of escaping death. Some say Renekton is an initiator and needs to dash to initiate. I will say that is not really true : Renekton currently lacks the beefiness of Xin to really initiate head-on. Of course, if you have very low cooldowns ( 5 secs - ) , I'm pretty sure you can go ahead and slice/dice as much as you want.

Dicing w/fury should be avoided if not necessary to secure a kill. RP is a much better choice when it comes to fury.

Dominus Renekton transforms into the Tyrant form gaining bonus Health and dealing damage to enemies around him. While in this form, Renekton gains Fury periodically.
Renekton surrounds himself with dark energies for 15 seconds, gaining 300/450/600 Health. While active, he deals 50/75/100 (+0.1) magic damage to nearby enemies and gains 5 Fury per second.

Cost
No Cost
Range
20

Analysis : Raw Speaking, Renekton's ult is just like you added a sunfire cape to your inventory for 15 seconds. Added health and added DoT. Unfortunately, you also become bigger thus easier to aim at, but you also gain extra reach for you attacks, which is very useful. Lastly, the ult produces a maximum of 225 Fury over 15 seconds, making it the only time where you can really "spam" your skills.
Tactics
Like most buffing ult, the general tactic to Renekton's ult is to make the most of it. That means abusing it's fairly cooldown too. In all cases , it is imperative you use it before you hit W because you want to dish the maximum damage possible from proximity. That also means you might want to FORGET your Q right after the W to keep the proximity with your enemy. You need to realize your ult can inflict up to 1500 Magic Damage + Carry-Like auto-attacks AND your W. He runs away ? Slice him up again and hit Q. The end.

New Renekton players will often forget that his ult is not Nasus' . Of course the HP bonus is a gift from gods, but it doesnt make you beefier like Nasus' ult can. If Nasus is defense, Renekton is strictly offense. Deal as much as you can and don't forget to back off.

Builds and Items

This section will be divided between 3 sub-sections : Physical Core,Magical Core and Hybrid Core. Optional items are offered for each sections, with analysis and synergy summary.

Remember that every enemy is different and you shoud learn to adapt, else you will lose in High-Elo for sure ! This is NOT a Pub Build !

Physical Core
Fighting a physical damage force.

Since patch 110, The famous DS has been increased in strengh and cost, making the initial buy of an health potion impossible. It is still a great choice and much more safer than Doran's Blade, as Renekton is very easy to harass and deny.

You simply can't live without those awesome CDR boots, and I think Riot has a secret plan of releasing champions making use of this new item. Plus, it's cheap.

People don't seem to understand how important and powerful this item is for Renekton. It simply gives him everything he needs, from CDR to attack damage to crit chance to armor penetration. Do I have to mention the unique active that upgrades Renekton's chasing ability ?

I can't stress enough how dangerous an Ulted Renekton w/ Sunfire cape is. The added HP and armor will also make you beefier. While not fully synergized with the gator, SC has proven times and times over his usefullness.

Renekton needs to dish damage in order to be effective in teamfights, since he can't tank or support as well as other champion. This item will allow him to use even more all the armor penetration you stacked in this build, providing you with far more damage output than using, say, infinity edge.

You are NOT in low ELO. People will use all their wits to bring you down and no champion gets invincible in ranked games. You will need this item to bring fear to your enemies, bringing you down just so you can get back up and rip them in half.

Renekton never gets a very fast champion. He is actually outrunned by many and sadly outranged by others. This item insures he has a chance to pursue his prey on longer distances while making him beefier. What to add ? Playing on Renekton is not always upgrading what's good about him but also to fix his problems too.

Optional items for physical core

I actually happen to use this item in games where a tank Renekton gets more useful than a DPS one ( Example : When idiotic solo queue insta lock or pick tanks and proceed to build it DPS (DPS Malphite woohoohohohohho) ). RO is an awesome item, granting you HP, Armor , Cooldown Reduction and an AOE slow. Add that you slow people attacking you and that you recover health very fast, and that makes it one of the best items you could get to get tankier. Why do I not recommend it then ? Because it's a tank Item and it's design is meant to defend. Frozen Mallet, on the other side, makes you the predator.

This item is very situational. Against Burst Champions, it can be very effective at taking them down before they can rain hell on you ( Ex : Malzahar ). It's limit stays at his limited features and usefullness. A Youmuu's will be more effective, sorry.

Magical Core
Fighting a magical damage force.

Since you are facing AP instead of AD, Doran's Shield will prove to be less synergized and too expansive for it's remaining bonuses ( HP and HP/5 ). Instead, your gonna want to start building anti-magic stuff very fast and the RP is the best way to maintain good survability early game. Buying this will allow you to stock up HP potions as well !

You simply can't live without those awesome CDR boots, and I think Riot has a secret plan of releasing champions making use of this new item. Plus, it's cheap.

If the enemy is CC-based, go for

Mercury's Thread Always a good option. It has came to my mind, though, that Renekton's W negate the use for a continuous reduction to CC.

People don't seem to understand how important and powerful this item is for Renekton. It simply gives him everything he needs, from CDR to attack damage to crit chance to armor penetration. Do I have to mention the unique active that upgrades Renekton's chasing ability ?

This item is way too UNDERATED because of his low price tag and lack of snowballing into higher items. This items is a quick, inexpensive way of building MR, HP , CDR and higher healing on Q. I love this thing.

Here comes the big armor. This thing is what makes tanks win games. Superb MR, HP regen and bonus Movement Speed, Making Renekton more effective at out-running CC-Users as well as chasing them. Few items synergize as well as this.

Optional items for magical core
How to not like this. I mean, the 30-sec shield is gold for any champion on the game. Only little thing, it doesnt synergize with Renekton. It has a mana bonus the alligator has nothing to do with, and Force of Nature offers a better MR. In short, it is best used if you are forced to play as a tank. Other than that, wasted money.

Not quite sure why I don't use this item. It has great potency on the paper. I would consider using it instead of black Cleaver if the enemy casters are very squishy yet powerful ( Ryze, Annie, Kassadin, Lux, Ap-Shaco, Teemo ). An awesome item for sure.

You must be quite out of "wits" to use this. Yeah sure, the bonus are very good, but Renekton is innefective if he doesnt deal damage and this item cannot substitute a ghostblade. Very good for late game though.

Hybrid Core
Fighting a hybrid damage force.

I repeat that you should manipulate this build around to suit your needs. Parameters are :

-Amount of CC enemy Uses
-Stuns/Snares/Slows/Knock
-Number of AP Users
-Number of AD Users
-Number od Tanks
-Type of enemy ( Mana-Based, Energy-Based , CDR-Based, Rage-Based, Mantra-Based )
