Threats & Synergies
Huge threat, can completely out range you with her Q. It is important to engage when she has used her Q and missed, if she gets too close to minions try and poke her down with your AOE E. Not necessarily worth fighting unless you can get a clean gank to proc her passive.
A good akali is a big threat however you can stop her with E + W. It is hard for her to engage you, but when she does she can easily kill you as long as she has her ult. Don't try to fight unless you can root and kill her, or you get a good gank.
Annie will beat you in the mana game, her level 6 is extremely strong and Ryze has pretty poor range compared to her. It is not worth you hitting a root, and her hitting a stun on you as she can R and deal a tone of damage. Try to poke her down before lvl 6 or when she doesn't have stun available.
Brand can deal a lot of damage over time from a good distance. Engaging him is pretty hard as he has a stun and good range. Play carefully and engage when he misses an ability.
Cassiopeia will almost always win trades with you. She deals a lot of damage with very low cooldowns, you are mainly burst. Any type of engage is a bad engage with her. Wait for a gank and play safe.
Corki isn't much of a threat. It is important to dodge his Q but other than that it should be a pretty even lane.
Diana can be extremely aggressive with you throughout the entire laning phase. Your short range will make it hard to trade, and come out on top. Do not try and fight when she has ult up. Playing safe will allow you to scale and eventually be able to beat her.
Ekko can deal a lot of damage to you, it's not always easy to hit your root and his Q makes it hard to get close. He will often try to roam so keep your lane pushed as much as possible.
No one likes Fizz. Root him after he jumps up in order to secure a trade. Don't mess with him after level 6.
Galio can get real close, real quick. Be careful and cautious of your range and don't get too close. Rooting him, followed with a Q is good enough, don't try to deal more damage as he will charge at you.
Heimer is a threat to all melee champs, however he can be a problem for Ryze as well. Don't waste mana on killing turrets, auto them as much as possible and do not try to fight while he has turrets up (that is just common sense).
Leblanc can be an extreme threat. She is able to get out of your root with her W and do a lot of burst damage. She doesn't get any weaker either so it is important to either play even, or try to get ahead with ganks before she hits level 6.
Orianna has great range to stop anyone from farming and zone them out. She isn't that deadly until level 6, but neither are you. Engage when she uses W and hold dash for her ultimate.
Qiyanna can be a threat, she isn't as much of a threat as Diana but her ability to root, dash and hit you again makes her a very aggressive champ. You can counter her with a good root and then walk away.
You are pretty much even with Swain mid, you don't need to get close enough so that he can root you. If he misses his root, now is a good time to get some trades in and use phase rush to get back.
Zilean can stun you and out range you every second of the game. A good root on Zilean can be his death. Try to punish him as much as possible before lvl 6, but only if he is playing aggressive.
Zed will be stronger than you in laning phase. This is why it is good to have TP, as by the time he is level 6 you should be able to buy Lost Chapter before he manages to ult you and kill you.
Xerath out ranges you however you can easily avoid his stun. If he misses, and is playing aggressive it is an easy trade.
Be careful of Neeko's roots as they are similar to your range. Don't hide behind minions and don't engage unless she misses her root. Her Q does repetitive damage, yours doesn't.
Syndra is easier to play against and more even with Ryze. She can however slowly poke you down with her W, or her stun then W. Don't try to fight when she has ult, hers is much better than yours in 1v1s.
Twisted fate can poke you down easily and make it hard to play Ryze. Don't let the wave push into your tower, but don't be too aggressive either. Play safe unless he misses his stun.
None, Ryze doesn't bully anyone in lane unless they are bad at their champ.
Ryze is a damage dealer. If he is given time, he can 1v5 an enemy team. However he needs a good tank to be able to protect him and keep focus off him. Any tank that has a good engage/sustain in fights can work with Ryze.
