Introduction
While still a really good and strong jungle pick, I feel people have finally learned how to counter Volibear. Which is OK because if you play your cards right in any match it won't matter how much kiting or CC is played on you. Your role is the frontline and take all the damage and let the rest of your team focuses damage on the enemy team.
![]() Level 1 Frenzy (W) Start with and max this FIRST. It gives a bit more damage than Majestic Roar, which scales off AP anyway. Sure, it doesn't fear the jungle camp, but you should be getting a leash to avoid death. Maxing Frenzy when you get to about level 7 will start making people freak out on the damage output. |
![]() Level 2 Majestic Roar (E) Put a point in this to help clear your next camp. Majestic Roar will fear neutral and enemy minions. It also slows champions in a small area of effect. Max this SECOND. |
![]() Level 3 Rolling Thunder (Q) Max this LAST. After clearing your 3rd camp, you should put a point into your (Q). You should be able to gank right after this. Sometimes that mid champ tries to ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Passive - Chosen of the Storm
When your health drops below 30% your passive will "pop", healing yourself 30% of your max HP in 6 seconds. This is why

R - Thunder Claws
For 12 seconds, Volibear goes full HULKSMASH letting out a raging roar and sending bolts of lightning for every auto-attack. The bolts bounce off his target up to 3 nearby enemies, dealing magic damage (increased per ability level). Remember that if you can't reach your target and their minions (or other enemy champions) are nearby you should hit them to bounce the lightning so that it hits your intended target.

There are a couple of ways to do this. You can still do the same method I explained above, but you'll only have help from your top laner. OR:
1.) Start with Gromp and finish him off with

- Totes mcGoats forgot to add Thornmail in the alternative items. What a dingus.
4/20/2016
- BLAZE IT
Holy **** it's been nearly a year since I've updated this guide. I feel like it's unfinished and/or missing things, so I'll be back on this regularly.
8/8/2015
- Added a couple alternative smite alternatives for the damage page.
8/6/2015
- Updated guide with user suggestion for those who don't want to rely on Voli's bite. Build section got a nice revamp. Nothing in 5.15 has affected Volibear (at least not in a noticeable way) so we're still set.
7/28/2015
- Replaced Ranger's Trailblazer with Stalker's Blade - Devourer as an alternative smite item.
6/26/2015
- Updated mastery section to reflect tree changes for patch 5.12.
6/25/2015
- Riot has been making changes to the Mastery trees. As soon as MOBAFire updates the trees, I'll update this to a 9/21/0 page.
5/12/2015
- Updated jungle clear for Blue side. Don't you want a lot of HP for your first gank? :D
5/6/2015
- Updated recommended build section. I've found that I use Thornmail a lot in my builds, so I put that in the Core build and moved Sunfire Cape down to alternative. Additionally, since no one uses Poacher's Knife, I replaced it with Trailblazer - Cinderhulk in the alternative item section.
4/30/2015
- Cleaned up jungle clear section. No one is confused with wraiths and Raptors or Krugs and Golems anymore. Also, Stalker's Blade has been changed for some time, as well as Juggernaut changed to Cinderhulk. I tend to use Righteous Glory a lot and find that it's an amazing active Voli can use during team fights. All that stuff has been added/updated into the guide.
4/22/2015
- Updated Purple Team to Red Team. RIP Purple Team. Also, I know they made the colors for your team blue no matter which side, but you know what sides I'm talking about...
1/23/2015
- Updated title. It's officially season 5! Jungle clear is still relevant despite the updated 2 smite charges.
11/26/2014
- Updated Masteries page. Seems to be a lot more effective for the Pre-Season. I was able to do Krugs (hard leash) > Red (light leash) > Blue without using any potions.
11/25/2014:
- Updated alternative build with different notes. Poacher's knife is definitely an alternative, but you only benefit from it by counter jungling.
11/24/2014:
- Updated jungle clear chapter. The way I had before wasn't nearly as efficient, and there's more colors. :D
