Introduction
As most people who play Shen know, flat health scales extremely well with Shen due to his passive which gives him powerful damage output - this is why my build rushes Warmog's Armor as soon as the farming potential is achieved with Sunfire Aegis.
Doran's Shield is an amazing item, and should keep you in lane almost indefinately - by the time you first go back to base, if you have been jumping in for all your last hits on minions with Vorpal Blade and Ki Strike you should easily have 1800g for the two core defensive items ( Chain Vest and Negatron Cloak). With these, you should be able to comfortably rescue an ally in a pickle, but don't try to be godlike quite yet...
Some movement speed is essential for Shen so boots are next, but your Shadow Dash and Feint should allow you to get out of most situations at this stage in the game without the need for fully upgraded boots. As stated above, Sunfire Aegis is finished, and from here, gold is simple to farm now - just sit on minion waves and watch your total soar! As soon as your team needs you, POOF! Stand United in and grab a few kills for some extra cash.
You will have your Warmog's Armor in absolutely no time at all - and it will stack up really fast with the Sunfire Aegis minion kills. At this stage you can tank turrets with a fair amount of comfort so long as you are not interrupted by anyone too strong - so grab the nearest turret killer and ninja top lane!
Force of Nature provides a huge amount of magic resistance, health regen and movement speed - all of which are brilliant for Shen. Atma's Impaler is really the icing on the cake when you should be just under 4k health, to allow you to wipe out turrets with very little assistance. You may choose to take Frozen Mallet instead if they are getting away too often, but the extra armour is really very nice indeed.

I really hope people like this build - it is built on a lot of experience as Shen, and I am certain that it will prove successful for those who play it. If you are new to Shen, get a little practice farming minions early game, it's really simple to do in two ways:
a) run towards the target, Vorpal Blade to kill, Pop Feint immediately, run out.
b) Run into melee range of the target, Pop Feint, Ki Strike, Run out.
If (a) doesn't kill the target, you will be left in scenario (b) anyway, so get the last hit. If the other players in your lane aren't responding to your advances - go for 2 minion kills with Vorpal Blade AND Ki Strike!
Best of Luck
