Better poke than you overall and needs to be respected. Best I can recommend is not to poke her unless she misses her Q and she can't E you because of minion wave, Later in the game her burst will be better than yours since you're more Q + Empowered Auto Reliant
Akshan
Not much you can do against him in this matchup seeing as your only means of stopping him is your ult and that's if you land it while he's using his E. Overall just a complete pain that can punish you more than you can him for poking.
Annie
Outranges and outbursts you overall so this is a hard matchup. You can poke her if you want but she's gonna do a bit back. At level 6+ if you're half health she's most likely gonna ult burst you with tibbers. Respect her and the bear all game.
Azir
Heavy annoyance. His soldiers outrange you so he can poke you down better than you can, and has the best kit to pick if he should fight or run. I don't recommend doing this into him unless you REALLY wanna just mess with him, cause you won't have fun at all most of the game.
Diana
No counterplay. Has every way to negate your kit from giving you an edge to escape or poke.
Ekko
Easy way to get into your face and all in you if you let him, which is mostly whenever he wants to engage you for poking him. Later in the game his damage is gonna mess you up so just be safe in lane phase and poke him when you know if he tries to E in on you it'll screw him over.
Fizz
Worst nightmare. Not much counterplay since going in to poke him makes him all in you once he hits Level 3+.
Kassadin
Once he hits level 6+ he owns lane. You can punish him before then since you outrange him, but once he has his ult he'll make sure you regret anything you did to him during the lane phase. If he ults onto you under tower, try to ult him so it costs him but besides that just be cautious in the lane phase. He can easily keep up with you even if you E spam away.
Neeko
Pretty annoying poke and stun power honestly. Her Q does more damage if it hits minions who die or hits you and her root lasts longer the more targets it hits. Just try to keep your distance, play safe and bait her into ganks.
Pantheon
No counterplay, advise playing another champ.
Seraphine
Hate to say it, she's better at fighting you than you are fighting her.
Swain
Dodging his E wont matter since his Q range is as far as yours. He just wins overall in every stage so make sure not to feed him at the very least.
Sylas
Easily able to get in your face and thanks to his ult stealing, he'll make use of your ult very well. I would play super safe against him if you get picked into by him.
Talon
Trying to poke him makes him want to poke you back and full engage you for even considering thinking you can do it. If he jumps on you, just back up if possible and try to stay near if not under tower so he can't one shot you without help from another laner.
Vex
Wouldn't bother trying.
Viktor
Better poke than you overall and just better damage. If he walks up to you don't trade, his Q will just stop your Q and auto because of his shield so the trade will just be in his favor every time. He outdoes you later in the game as well so at the very least make sure you don't let him feed.
Vladimir
Stronger Q power than you and just overall better kit. I just wouldn't fight him if possible.
Yone
Not much counterplay since he can easily close the gap with all his abilities and come out on top. I would ban him honestly if you can't decide who to get rid of.
Zed
Better all-in Overall and just a pain to deal with, since poking him will hurt you just as bad truthfully if he retaliates. If he ults on you, try to ult him if he did it under tower or just in general so he cant burst you but respect his damage.
Akali
Not insanely hard but just gotta be cautious. Your Q outranges her so you can poke her that way, just know that she'll all in you once she has a chance. If she E's back to you, best to use your ult to stop her if she's attempting an all in so she can't do anything to you. Just be a poke bully to her and make sure the enemy jungler can't get you for it.
Cassiopeia
Pokes you as much as you can her so it's a bit of a pain. If you can avoid her poison from her Q and W you're in a good spot, if she hits you once with either she's chasing you down spamming E which hurts cause most Cass builds Conq. Just play safe and respect her poison damage.
Galio
He's an anti-mage so he's got a bit more resistance to you than you'd like. Just be careful going in to poke him with Empowered auto since he'll most likely try to E in and hard trade you for it. Your only real best bet is to just try to Q poke him and only auto him if his engage is down. Ult him if he tries to ult away and you can reach him.
Heimerdinger
More annoying than anything since most heims just try to keep turrets where he can punish you for poking him or trying to destroy them. If anything just respect his turrets and dont feed him. He's super easy to burst later in the game.
LeBlanc
Her Q+W can be a major pain especially if she lands her stuns as well. Just play safe in the lane phase and if you have the reaction time, ult her if she tries to hit you under tower so you can hopefully get a kill if she's not fast enough to react. Just watch yourself later, if shes fed off seal she'll one shot you.
Ryze
NEVER underestimate Ryze. He might have a low winrate but that doesn't mean he won't whoop you if you let him. His combo power is nuts and overall he just outdamages you and can poke you just as much if not more than you can. Later he might be more managable but play safe in the lane.
Taliyah
Pretty straightforward, just dodge the W when she has her E field out so she can't stun you and don't stand in the open where she can Q poke you.
Veigar
Better poke than you if he can land them. If he gates you just dodge what you can and obviously don't walk into the gates edge. Later in the game though he's easily gonna beat you. Just don't let him get ahead in the laning phase.
Xerath
Pretty annoying since he has better poke power. If you can dodge his Q and W pokes and waste his mana you might be able to do better poke wise, but just make sure you don't feed him or let him poke you down too hard or he basically wins the entire game.
Yasuo
Decently manageable honestly. Poke him while you can but remember he can use minions to E in your face and then dash back out before you can retaliate so once he hits 6 try to play near tower so he gets tower aggro and even better, dies if he gets ulted by you.
Anivia
If you can dodge her stun and stay out of her ult so she can't use her E to hard poke you, you have a winning shot in-lane. Just poke her with your Q and Empowered Auto when you can when it wont put you in a bad spot.
Aurelion Sol
Iffy matchup. Sol has better poke punishment but if he misses his stun he can't really do it, worst he'll attempt is to poke you with his W increasing his stars range but that won't do alot to help his mana. Later in the game you almost do more damage than him surprisingly if you can avoid his stun engage.
Irelia
Poke her carefully and get grievous early. If you don't she'll just heal whatever damage you do to her by Qing minions to full health. If you manage to play safe enough that her E can't reach you or she can't do anything even if it does you'll be ok. She needs fed to stay in the game, if she's even a bit behind it hurts her.
Katarina
Depends on the Kat which most you run into are pretty much good at using her. Poke her when you can, stay away from her daggers and ult her if she tries to ult you so she can't get a kill. If she stays too far behind she isn't useful, just be cautious as once she gets her first item she gets more confident in all ins.
Lux
Iffy situation. Her E is the most annoying thing but if you can dodge her Q stun it isn't horrible. Just know she's gonna outburst you in a 1v1 so be careful if she manages to land her abilities.
Orianna
You're both meant to poke each other, but yours should be slightly better if you're careful. Once she hits 6 just be careful cause her ult can easily screw you over in a bad spot. Overall though this shouldn't be too hard till later in the game.
Syndra
Dodge her Q poke and position yourself at an odd angle that makes it hard for her to stun you with her wave ability, also recommend barrier for her. If she can't land her stun combo she can't do a ton to you, and you'll do decent against her in lane. Just get help as well, her burst is nuts once she has her first item.
Corki
Not much of a scare from him especially after his nerfs to his rockets but they still hurt. Just watch your positioning so he cant blast you with rockets every 2 seconds and you should be able to outrange and poke him down.
Malzahar
Surprisingly in your favor somewhat. His passive is easy to remove thanks to your Qs massive range so it can stay down almost all lane phase. Just make sure you watch yourself when he hits level 6+, alot of Malz players will just ult you and 75% of the time, his jungle or teammate will be nearby for cleanup.
Morgana
Easily your favor if you can avoid her Q stuns. Her puddles wont do much damage overall if she can't keep you in them so just keep poking her and make sure you don't get stunned. Check if she has stopwatch as if she does she'll use it her first ult she thinks she can kill you with. Ult her if you can if her spellshield isn't up in time to make space but if it's up, try to flash away or E out of range.
Qiyana
You can easily outpoke her, however her damage is nuts if she gets close enough so be careful. Once she hits 6, try to keep away from walls so she can't ult burst you down. If Qiyana stays behind she can't do much so do your best to slow her progress down.
Zoe
If the Zoe can land abilities really well, she goes up to major threat. For the most part you can better poke her since your Q targets champs first over minions, while her abilities hit minions first so she has to adjust her angle. Just watch where she goes and know if she's making weird movements she's trying to find a poke angle on you.
Twisted Fate
I mean, yes he has a good poke with Q and can stun you but once he runs out of those abilities he can't do much. Your Q poke is better honestly overall. If he ults and you can stop it, ult him so not only is it down but he can't help his team. He'll chase you after though so be ready for that.
Zeri
I mean just don't feed her or let her get close enough to Q you, if she does at least stay behind minions. Watch for her if she goes towards the wall, means she's planning to obviously W damage you. Don't let her get close if possible because her ult burst does alot later, but for the most part easily manageable if shes behind.
I'll be honest, Sona Mid isn't a ranked comp style and if anything is more just for fun above all else. If you do use it in ranked, use it at your own risk since most meta champs right now easily punish this pick.
Honestly though this is just a super fun build that's different and most people don't expect Sonas poke power or damage to scale or really do much in the entire game so it's always fun to see reactions.
The Pros
-Good Poke Power: Sona has some decent poke with her Q, and because of the fact it targets champions before minions it makes it even better with how wide the range is. Not to mention her empowered auto from her Q is just overall nuts in the longrun.
-Surprisingly Good Scaling: This pick, despite seeming like it would be bad, actually scales hella well. Your Q and empowered Q auto ESPECIALLY do more damage. Squishy targets nearly get one shot once you have Your mythic and Lich
-Useful For Teams Fights: Besides your ult and damage you gain, your healing doesn't do too bad in the longrun so you can still constantly heal while also providing damage for your team. You actually have seriously impressive power in the longrun with being a supportive damage dealer.
The Cons
-Weak Early Game: Her poke power might be good but her early game damage is just overall terrible. You're not gonna get a kill right away till you have some AP items and maybe a bit of help so just be weary of any fights you take
-Team Reliant: Once lane is over, you really need your team around to make an impact. You can't solo 1v1 anyone unless you're seriously good at kiting and the enemy keeps chasing, but for the most part you need their help to keep up with the fights.
-Heavy Mana Consumption: Sona uses alot of mana, even with seraphs embrace you lose mana fast using your abilities to combo what you need in a moments notice so take caution when you go into a fight, it can easily screw you if you're too low on mana to do much.
-Useless if behind: If you get camped, killed or too far behind to make any real impact against the enemy team, you'll notice just how fast this build can fall off. You won't be able to do anything until you can keep up later by CSing hard, and Sona doesn't have good waveclear
-Poor Waveclear: Her CSing and wave clear is awful. Granted, her Q can target 2 opponents, her power to get CS and clear waves isn't the best usually resulting in missing CS unless you're really good at landing your autos or abiliies at perfect times if your Q even agrees to hit the minion you need it to.
Playstyle
You're pretty much all game going to do a safer playstle relying on your team to help you in a good portion of the stages. In the later game you can definitely scare the enemy with how powerful your Q+Empowered Q auto is but for the most part you need your teams help to make this damage work.
Your best combo for poke is to use Auto-Q-Empowered Q Auto for poke damage if possible. Sona actually doesn't have the best AP ratio on her abilities but it still scales decently well if you're careful enough. Just make sure when you play, you play around your team and during lane phase, do your best to poke. You do alot of damage once you manage to get your boots and first 2 items and people underestimate how much you can do.
Minus being a damage dealer needing to focus on damage, the playstyle for Sona doesn't change in midlane. You can still be a supportive champion for your team while also doing a ton of damage off your Q.
