This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
He can't harass you and he can't afford to pull you without retaliation that will leave him losing the trade. As long as you aren't hooked under tower or hooked into a jungler+carry then you should be fine. If you do end up getting hooked, stun and use your Q charges on him, remember to auto attack in between your Q casts. Don't use your Q charges on him if you're going to get chunked by the carry, just dash out, using your Q for extra distance if needed. If your ADC gets hooked, it'd be wise to dash in and help CC the enemies while your ADC escapes or continues fighting.
Caitlyn
Keep her out of the brushes so she doesn't stack her passive quickly. If you are low elo it is common for Caitlyn players to burn their Caliber Net once an enemy gets into melee range of her. Because of this, you can use a couple Q charges to close the gap and stun her, weaving auto attacks in to proc Thunderlords which will often burn her Caliber Net. If the 2v2 is in your favor at that point, engage on her when your skills come back up. Her Caliber Net has a massive cooldown of 16 seconds at rank 1, and 10 seconds at rank 5, this is her only escape so look for chances to abuse her when it's down. It's also fairly easy to use your knockup to interrup her Caliber Net while she's midair, which will force her to run or fights.
Ashe
Her slows have no effect on you because of your high mobility spells. Don't be afraid to tank her ult for your carries. If Ashe does manage to land an ult on your carries, make sure to zone the enemies, if that isn't an option then peel with your CC and tank some damage with your shield.
Jinx
Avoid her snares and she won't be much of a threat. Slows do practically nothing against you and she has no escapes. You might take rocket harass for the first few levels but when you get all your abilities, laning phase won't be much of a problem.
Annie
I previously misunderstood this lane, now that I'm more familiar with it I can comfortably place Annie as one of the hardest matchups. She's everything that you don't want to play against. A fairly safe playstyle, poke that you can't intercept for your ADC, and good 2v2 potential. I don't recommend picking Riven into Annie support under any circumstances. An Annie stun on you and your ADC can easily lose you the fight. If you happen to encounter this matchup, I wish you luck and hope the MR page helps you survive.
Lulu
Somewhat similar to Annie, but her utility is pain to deal with. Her poke is going to be annoying but you shouldn't be poked out of lane. Her polymorph will render you or your carry useless for a small amount of time, don't get caught in a bad spot while polymorphed or else you'll get destroyed. You provide CC and you have a spammable self shield, but Lulu provides buffs to her carry, she can grant her carry bonus health, movement speed, and a shield, and she can also polymorph and slow to peel for her. Not insanely hard, but she gets even more difficult to deal with as the game goes on. Recommend the MR page.
Janna
Her peel is annoying, but this match up isn't as bad as it seems. Her slow won't affect you, but if she uses it on your carry then be ready to CC the enemy carry if they try to engage. Most of the time all ins aren't going to yield any kills because she will have her tornado, shield, or Monsoon up. Remember you can knock her up during her Monsoon to cancel it, it will heal (based on level) 300/450/600 total health, so cancelling it early is advised, especially in team fights. Healing a full team for 600 is massive, so try and shut her ult down when you can. A general rule of thumb, you shouldn't look to trade when the enemy ADC has Janna's shield on them.
Kalista
Her main strength is that she can kite really well, though that doesn't really work well against Riven. When Riven has her abilities up, she can knock up Kalista while she's jumping and you can stun her right after. She's not hard to get onto at all, just don't let her kite your entire team in team fights. Don't assume she's alone when you don't see her support. You're likely going to be 2v2ing her whenever you engage because her support is more than likely going to be in her ult range or her jungler may be nearby.
Twitch
No escape other than his stealth, which is hardly an escape once you get on top of him with a pink ward. His damage over time isn't much of a problem as long as he doesn't get several stacks of poison on you. You can dodge his Spray and Pray autos by dashing to the side when he shoots at you. Try to shut him down and CC/zone him in team fights so he won't shred your team later on.
Jhin
One of the most immobile champs in the game, you will have no trouble getting to him. CC him when he ults or dash into the bullets to protect your team, if your dash isn't up and your carries are at a safe distance, try to dodge them. The first 3 bullets from his ult don't do much damage as long as the target has a decent amount of health. His W is easily dodgeable and so is his E. Try to get him to fire his 4th shot at you and then use Valor to block some of the damage.
Brand
Not too hard, I recommend the magic resist rune page against him. He has two abilities that are easily dodgeable, if his ult bounces to you then dash away from your team and minions, preventing it from damaging anyone else. Be careful if you decide to trade with him, being in melee range of Brand makes it very easy for him to land his stun on you. His new passive shouldn't be underestimated, if he somehow manages to land 3 spells on you then you will take a large amount of damage.
Alistar
He can peel for his carry fairly easily, if he knocks you away it will take all of your Q charges and your dash to catch back up to him. He has longer cooldowns than you do, but it's very difficult to get kills when he's in lane. As always, if he engages on your carry then first start to zone the enemy ADC, if they're already in range then CC them. Careful for the cheesy Flash+Pulverize --> Headbutt into tower.
Thresh
Not too difficult because his main engage tool is a skillshot that can be dodged and easily intercepted. Try and stay on your toes, if a hook is going towards your carry you may want to intercept it by dashing into the hook with your E. You are also able to block a large amount of Thresh's auto attack harass damage with your shield as well. If he engages on you then you should be able to beat him in close range 2v2s. He can disrupt your 3rd Q charge, which is your knockup. Beware of that, his Box slow shouldn't effect your mobility much and neither should his Flay slow. You can use your 3rd Q charge to interrupt someone that's midair travelling with the lantern, just like you can interrupt Corki's W, Tristana's W, Lee's W, etc. Don't take free harass from his auto attacks and protect your carry from hooks.
Vel'Koz
All his abilities are skill shots and he has no escape. His ult is easy to dodge as well, as you can run to the side and he won't be able to rotate fast enough to keep up with you. You can disrupt his ult easily and engaging on him is a breeze. Intercept his Q with your shield to keep your ADC safe.
Soraka
Her Q is easily dodgeable, try not to get snared. She will outsustain you, so look for all ins, take ignite and use it on the ADC. I don't recommend going for even trades because she will heal. Do not fully commit to a fight if she has her silence up. Generally, you're going to want to bait out her silence before engaging. Her silence cooldown is huge, when it's down you should attempt to capitalize on it.
Orianna
Unless you're against Aqua Dragon then this lane likely won't be a problem. She's a utility support so catching her and her carries will be somewhat difficult if they keep their distance.
Check out Aqua Dragon's guides too, he's great with off meta builds and he got me interested in off meta builds as well.
Corki
Avoid taking free harass from him because he does do decent damage early. If he uses his W then you should be able to all in him with your carry. It's also possible to knock him up while he's flying away with his W, if you manage to do this then you're going to chunk him for a good amount if you don't kill him.
Bard
Doesn't do much damage, avoid his stun and you'll be able to all in him without much of a problem. If he does get stuns on you and your carry consistently, then this lane will be not only annoying, but fairly difficult. If his health shrines are within reasonable distance, you can dash over to them and get rid of them, using your remaining abilities to retreat back.
Draven
Not too hard, you can dash towards him when he throws a Spinning Axe at you and make your way to where the axe will land. If he stands there to catch it, you'll be able to trade with him fairly well as long as you're not at a severe disadvantage (Fighting in enemy minion wave, 2v3, etc). You can also CC him while his axes are mid air, preventing him from catching them which leads to a severe loss of damage. Don't use all your spells to gap close or else he will hit you with Stand Aside and you'll get kited.
Poppy
Annoying, she can block one of your Q charges or your dash, and if she blocks your 3rd Q repeatedly, then you're in for a really annoying lane. Don't stand next to walls, if you get stunned then it's guaranteed that you'll take full damage from her Q as well. If you don't get your 3rd Q blocked and she doesn't constantly stun you or your carry, then you should be fine.
Karma
Her poke isn't hard to play against, her damage is primarily in her Q, which isn't hard to dodge as Riven. Feel free to use your shield to body block for your ADC if they're a skill shot magnet. One of the things that make Karma scary is her empowered Q (Soulflare), your shield should be able to block the impact damage, with your high mobility there's no reason for you to be in the AoE of her Soulflare to take both ticks of damage unless you were CC'd in place beforehand. 2v2 skirmishes aren't that fun against Karma. If you're fighting her and she gets dropped to low health, remember that her empowered W will heal her for 40% of her missing health if you stay in the snare range. After you get some items you'll have an advantage, but the odds of your carry getting a kill in laning phase aren't too good.
Kennen
Kennen, whether he's ADC or support, is very annoying to play against. He's well equipped to keep Riven at bay and he can also punish her if she tries to force an all in. In the rare games that you do lane against Kennen, you'll have a pretty hard time. His Mark of the Storm is difficult to shield, if he throws his shuriken at you and you shield the initial impact damage, he'll use his W to deal damage to you once the shield drops, or you can eat the initial impact damage and try to shield the W damage. If Kennen manages to burn his ult then you have a solid chance at winning a 2v2, with his ult he can land 2 and sometimes even 3 stuns onto you or your carry, which will put you at a severe disadvantage. Bait his ult if you can and exhaust the enemy carry if you do find yourself in a 2v2 skirmish. Letting a carry have free reign over you while you're stunned isn't something you want to do, Kennen won't do as much damage as the carry so it's wiser to not use exhaust on him.
Ezreal
His poke is very dodgeable and you'll be able to shield the damage if you do manage to get hit by him. His Iceborn Gauntlet won't do much against you, as most slows don't affect you much at all. The only thing about him is that he's going to be somewhat difficult to catch later on. In lane try to force him to use his E, while it's down try and engage on him again, your abilities should be back up before his E is. His E is a pretty low cooldown once he reaches the cooldown cap though. Feel free to block his Q with your E when he tries to use it for last hits.
Leona
She's like Riven but tankier and less mobile. If you were to 2v2 her, you'll most likely lose. She has 3 forms of CC while you have 2, and she has an ability that (at rank 5) grants her 60 armor and 60 magic resist for 3 seconds, that's as much resistances as a Guardian's Angel gives so it shouldn't be underestimated. If she uses her Zenith Blade on you, dash away and W her when you can, you should be able to walk away safely. If she attempts to engage on your carry, you should first try to zone out the enemy carry, if they're already close enough to hit your ADC then you should CC the enemy ADC. Leona will continue to CC your ADC but keeping the enemy damage dealer stunned or knocked up will stop a large amount of damage, also preventing Leona's Sunlight from being proc'd. Keep your carry alive (which isn't too difficult) and be ready to compete with them in team fights.
Tristana
She has long cooldowns and you're able to knock her up while she's using Rocket Jump. After she burns her escape, look for opportunities to engage onto her. Since her Explosive Charge takes some time to detonate, your shield will most likely be up to block the damage. Shield her ult if you can, as it will block a good amount of damage.
Tahm Kench
Low cooldown slow/stun, high damage, sustain. Don't let him stack his passive on your carry, if he tries to engage then CC him. He excels when fighting his targets at melee range, so if he Devours your ADC he will follow it up with another form of CC, doing a decent amount of damage. Stay between him and your carry when he has 2 stacks on your ADC, zone him until the stacks run out. You have stronger team fight presence, farm up and crush his team when you group.
Nautilus
Mildly annoying, if he hooks you then you should be able to stun before he can snare you with his auto attack, which will let you walk away safely. You can shield his harass and dash away from it fairly easily. If your carry gets hooked then zone the enemy ADC as always, if they're already too close then CC them. Make sure to leave at least one Q charge or an E to fall back if needed.
Zilean
His slow won't do anything to you, but be ready to zone or engage if he does slow your carry. Riven's E is a lower cooldown than Zilean's Time Bomb, allowing you to shield most (if not all) of his damage. It's also easy to dodge them thanks to your mobility, you can let the bomb land on you (or pick it up by walking over it) and then dash into your minion wave to help the enemy lane push towards you. You can still catch him when he uses his Time Warp thanks to your mobility. Easy lane, easy life.
Zyra
Dodgeable CC and fairly squishy. You will inevitably be taking a bit of harass from her plants, autos, and spells too if you're unable to dodge them. I recommend taking the MR page against her.
Morgana
Very easy to dodge her stun as Riven and you can outrun her ult. If your carry gets hit, zone or engage, you know the drill. Not a very difficult lane. Generally, you don't want to be in melee range of her if you don't have a Q charge or E dash. Being up close to her without any spells up can lead to you taking some unnecessary harass.
Graves
You need to get close to him to do anything to him, the lane's not very fun until you get some cooldown. If you're in melee range of Graves without any abilities up, you're going to take quite a bit of damage. Once you get some cooldown it becomes much easier, you can also shield your carry from the majority of the damage by standing between them.
Kindred
Kindred's dashes are on a fairly long cooldown, but when she's in her W then she will be hopping all over the place. Her dashes only move her a very short distance, so it's not difficult to engage on her at all. Don't waste everything on her right away because of her ult.
Sivir
She's a slippery gal. Don't make it obvious when you're going to use your CC on her because she will easily spell shield it. If she does block one of your CC spells, then she can kite you easily and drop a decent amount of damage onto you, if she ults afterwards, then you might be in a bit of trouble. Otherwise, you should be fine. Don't be extremely close to her if you don't have any dashes up.
Kog'Maw
Immobile with 3 skill shots. He's fairly squishy and has no self peel, his early game is mediocre too. As long as you remain even in lane then you should be fine. He has no way to stop your engages, so constantly look for opportunities to engage. He's a very strong carry later on in the game, if you're going to all-in him make sure you've got an advantage, like exhaust.
Sona
Her poke can't be dodged, but it can be easily shielded. It's easy to engage on her because you travel further distance than her in a short amount of time with your dashes. If you end up committing to an unfavorable trade, the lane will be much harder. She'll outsustain you and continue to poke you and your carry. You'll be able to shield her poke, but your carry will take quite the beating. Post 6 she has her AoE stun as well, so engaging onto her becomes even more difficult. Look for picks when you group because a 5v5 against Sona isn't going to favor you most of the time.
Nami
Her bubble is easily dodged and her poke is shieldable. You'll end up taking some harass, take the MR page if you feel the need to, I don't recommend doing so. She'll outsustain you if you commit to unfavorable trades, just like the other sustain based supports. Beware of her Tidal Wave, if you are hit by that then she's almost guaranteed to hit you with her Aqua Prison. Nami matchup is like Sona and Soraka, look for all-ins instead of short trades.
Lucian
He's bursty so you're able to shield a lot of his damage if you time your shield correctly. His ultimate is easily stopped or dodged, you're able to shield some of it but it will end up melting through your shield if you tank too many hits. His dash can be stopped short if you knock him up with your third Q. Avoid taking free harass (as usual) and make sure to land your knock up before you stun because he can easily avoid your stun if you attempt to use it first. When you're in melee range of him make sure you still have at least 2 dashes of some sort so you can disengage or continue fighting. The last thing you want to do is be in melee range of a bursty ADC like Lucian without having any of your spells up. His mobility makes his a pain to deal with at every stage of the game.
Nunu & Willump
He has a spammable slow that slows attack speed, he's likely targeting your ADC with it. If he's targeting you, obviously shield it. He'll chew through his mana if he spams his Ice Blast, don't let his ADC capitalize on your carry when his attack speed is slowed. If your carry is CC'd and you have a Blood Boil'd carry running towards yours, zone and use your CC. His ultimate is easily cancelled and he has no sustain for his carry.
Miss Fortune
You can interrupt her ult and she has no self peel. Try and shield your carry from Double Up harass and look to engage on her when you can, she'll have a tough time getting away.
Trundle
Don't let him Chomp your ADC because Trundle will gain AD while reducing your carry's. You can dash through his Pillar of Ice with ease, making his slow useless. He gets much tankier when he uses ult, so be careful for that. He has excellent sustain too, look to all in his carry or remain even and prepare for team fights.
Taric
I hate this champ, post-rework Taric is a monster. AoE stun, good heal and shield, invulnerability to all nearby allies. **** you, Riot. I don't have a lot to say about him, he's just insanely strong at the moment. Just like any champion, he is complete garbage when in the wrong hands. If you're against a decent Taric, you're going to have an awful time. You can't block the stun for your team since it stuns all enemies within its range. If he manages to completely whiff his stun, then it's easier to engage on him. Try to burst before his ultimate renders his team unkillable if you think you can pick someone, if not then back off or wait until the invulnerability wears off and engage/continue fighting if you think the fight is winnable.
Braum
Long cooldowns but his Q will be on a fairly short cooldown later on in the game. He excels in melee fights but don't let him proc his passive on your carry and you should be fine. Like you, he has no innate sustain. He's got strong peel so he can easily stun you or your carry quickly when working with his carry. If you try hard engaging then he can position himself between both carries and use his Unbreakable, effectively blocking the majority of the damage that could be dealt. If he wastes his Unbreakable then it's much easier to win skirmishes against him.
Urgot
(OUTDATED) He's got low cooldown poke, but nothing too scary. Feel free to dash in front of your minions when he tries to last hit them with his Q. You can easily interrupt his ult if he tries ulting one of your teammates. He has no escape, but careful if you get hit by his E. If you get hit by his E then you either want to dash out of his range as soon as you can or engage onto him. If you engage onto him you are at a slight advantage because the armor debuff is on you instead of your carry (unless he got hit by it too) and you can block his Q by standing between him and your carry.
Vayne
Vayne's condemn is a 20 second cooldown level 1, 12 seconds level 5. When her condemn is on cooldown she is very vulnerable to your all-ins. Make sure you have a pink ward whenever you plan on killing her, she's pretty slippery when she tumbles during her ultimate. Make sure to use Valor to block her third silver bolt. Without her condemn she's very easy to stick to, she won't be able to tumble away faster than you can get to her.
Hello, I'm ******ed ******. Garbage Riven main here. I've been feeding since the start of Season 3 and consider myself to be pretty decent at the game. I decided to test out Riven support after reading this guide by xdartvaderx. There are a lot of things in his guide that I disagree with, so I decided to make a guide of my own. Check out his guide too, you may like it.
...Why?
...Why?
OLD: Ah, yes. The question on everyone's mind. You see, ever since The Brutalizer was removed and the wonderful Spell Weaving and Blade Weaving masteries were removed, Riven's suffered. Without those things, Riven's lost some damage and her optimal build path has changed significantly (for the worse, in my opinion).
The whole "League of Tanks" meta also isn't very fun to play against as Riven. She's just not able to blow up enemies quite like she used to, not nearly as easily at least. So I figured since I can't necessarily destroy tanks very quickly, why not build her as a tank instead of a fighter? I get to keep the utility by sacrificing damage. I wasn't too disappointed, but I wasn't impressed by any means. I just ended up being outclassed by popular top laners like Malphite, Ekko, and Sion.
After taking Riven to Top, Jungle, and Mid to no consistent success, I stumbled onto a Riven Support guide that gave me the idea of trying her in the support role. I loved the idea, I got to keep the utility and I wasn't a high priority target to focus in team fights. Riven's ability to travel long distances over a short time period makes her really good at being able to force bot lane skirmishes and roam to other lanes.
TL;DR: You become fairly tanky while keeping the utility of your abilities, you also aren't a high priority target in team fights so you won't be destroyed instantly if you get caught out of position.
What Runes Should I use?
What Runes Should I use?
Greater Mark of Attack Damage: Early AD is helpful, it helps you take trades you otherwise wouldn't be able to take. Your AD scalings are high and having higher AD also provides you with a higher shield.
Greater Seal of Health: 4 Health seals for negating more damage for the first few levels. These combined with your Relic Shield will have you sitting at a solid 666 health at level 1.
Greater Seal of Armor: 5 Armor seals for damage reduction from the enemy ADC, armor seals are also worth more than health seals late game.
Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction: 7.5% Cooldown and the rest of your items will leave you at 45%. Alternatively you can run 6 MR glyphs with 3 flat cooldown glyphs, if you do so then you should replace an armor quint with a scaling cooldown quint. That brings you to 5% flat cooldown and 5% additional cooldown at level 18, allowing you to reach the cooldown cap of 45%.
Greater Quintessence of Armor: More physical damage reduction which helps a little early and outscales health later, I believe these are the best quints to run because of the harass you are going to take during lane, melee supports tend to get harassed quite a bit.
Lane Partners
Lane Partners
This list is how I feel about the lane partners Riven lanes with. This list is by no means set in stone, it's always subject to change.
God tier lane partners
Aggressive/High DPS carries that synergize well with Riven's kit.
Draven: Powerful early game damage and insane snowball potential makes him a force to be reckoned with. He's able to follow up very nicely when you all in the enemy bot lane and you're able to CC the enemy long enough for Draven to get a clean ultimate off.
Jhin: A lovely lane partner to have, his Deadly Flourish and Curtain Call are all easily landed on targets once you've run up and CC'd them. His 4th shot is extremely powerful, you're able to walk up with Jhin and CC the enemy as he fires his 4th shot and you both should be able to retreat relatively safely while he reloads. If an enemy steps on one of Jhin's traps, you're able to run in and keep them CC'd so they take the damage from the trap if you act quickly.
Kalista: A personal favorite of mine, she's a very lane dominant champion and you are able to consistently proc her W passive with ease. Once you both get level 6 it's going to be very difficult for the enemy bot lane to beat you in a 2v2. Her aggressive playstyle and kit work really well with you.
Lucian: My second favorite lane partner, his mobility paired with his burst damage and lane dominance makes him another amazing carry. He's able to follow up on you when you engage and he will provide a very nice amounnt of DPS. One of the main reasons I enjoy laning with Lucian is because he's got his dash, it helps him escape from engages and jungle ganks very well.
Great lane partners
Strong carries that work well with Riven.
Decent lane partners
Not bad by any means, I just do not prefer laning with them because I feel their kits or playstyle don't mesh well with Riven's.
Unsure what tier Maokai would fit under. This is more for fun/cheese instead of competitive play, but he's a fun "ADC" to lane with. You can stack his passive very quickly which helps him sustain through laning phase until he gets stronger late game. You two have got a good all in because of the CC and constantly healing he will get from his passive.

Broken Wings - We max Q last because unlike Riven's other abilities, the cooldown remains the same (13 seconds) regardless of the amount of points we have into the ability. Take this ability level 2 for the mobility, it also makes it very easy to proc Thunderlords.
Ki Burst - Riven's W is viable to max first, though I choose not to. The cooldown reduces by 1 second per rank, starting at 11 seconds. The damage increases by 30 per rank, starting at 50. I sometimes take a point in this at level 2 when against Blitzcrank, if he pulls you and you stun as soon as you can, he won't be able to follow up with a Power Fist.
Valor - This ability is my favorite to max first. When casted, Riven dashes a short distance while also gaining a shield. It can be used to dodge, reposition, and block damage. Like Riven's W, this ability shaves 1 second off of its cooldown per rank, starting at 10 seconds. Max rank, you have a dash that blocks 210 (+100% bonus AD) damage every 6 seconds. With 45% cooldown, it's about a 3.3 second cooldown.
Blade of the Exile - Riven gains 20% AD as bonus damage for 15 seconds, but that's not what makes it great for support Riven. She also gains bonus range on her Q and W. When you have maximum cooldown, this is massive. You can get several spell rotations off in that amount of time, potentially knocking up and stunning multiple enemies.
Wind Slash - The second part of Riven's R, she unleashes a wave of energy in a cone, dealing physical damage to all enemies hit, increased by 2.67% for every 1% of the target's missing health. The maximum damage increase is 200% when the target is missing 75% of its health. Save it until the enemy is at lower health to get the most damage out of it or use it if the duration of your ult is going to run out.
Notable Items
Notable Items
Oracle Lens I love this item, it's amazing on Riven. Her mobility allows her to sweep a huge area which allows your team to clear plenty of wards.
face of the mountain and Locket of the Iron Solari are easily my favorite two items to build. Granting 10% coooldown each(Locket no longer gives 10% cooldown. Core build and build order may need to be changed.) , they both also provide shields. Face of the Mountain will shield an ally for about 250 damage late game and Locket will shield all nearby allies for an additional 250-270 late game as well.
Dead Man's Plate adds even more mobility to your kit while also giving you the ability to slow a target, great purchase if you're in need of armor and would like increased mobility and some damage.
Ohmwrecker +30% movement speed while near turrets is really nice, making you even more mobile than you were before. Very good against AD heavy teams. If I were to pick this up it'd be in place of Locket of the Iron Solari
Pros
Pros
+ Great in team fights + Arguably the most mobile champion in the game + Spammable abilities with no costs + Amazing ability to chase and CC multiple targets + High skillcap + Strong 2v2 skirmisher + Very fun to play + Quick and effective roams + Tanky!
Cons
Cons
- No innate sustain - If you aren't familiar with the basic Riven mechanics then reliably taking trades will be difficult. - No abilities that buff or heal your allies - Melee, meaning no poke - Can be zoned - Negligible damage
Laning
Laning
Riven's lane phase as a support is similar to Alistar's. Depending on the lane you can choose to be aggressive or passive.
Playing aggressive will only be rewarding if you're able to capitalize on enemy mistakes. If you feel you can safely proc Thunderlords on the enemy without taking much retaliation harass then go for it, over time you'll start to get them within kill range for your all-in. Make sure your ADC is on the same page as you before you go for any plays. Playing against champions like Jhin, Zyra, Vel'Koz, Kog'Maw, Twitch, Urgot, and Annie are all lanes that I would play aggressively.
When playing passively you'll just want to babysit your ADC, ready to peel them from any engage. The Thunderlords rule still applies, but careful not to blow all your spells when the bot lane can engage on your carry. Playing against champions like Leona, Blitzcrank, Morgana, Tahm, Kennen, Lulu, and Braum are all lanes I'd play pretty passively.
Champions like Sona and Soraka can be played either way. However, if you don't manage to burn their summoner spells or kill them when you all-in them, they'll heal up and outsustain you.
Level 18 45% Cooldown Abilities
Level 18 45% Cooldown Abilities
If you decide to opt for the Thunderlord's keystone, here's what your ability cooldowns will be at level 18.
Q: 0% CD: 13 seconds
45% CD: 7.15 seconds
W: 0% CD: 7 seconds
45% CD: 3.85 seconds
E: 0% CD: 6 seconds
45% CD: 3.3 seconds
R: 0% CD: 60 seconds
45% CD: 33 seconds
*Only applies once you have ~40%+ cooldown* After using your first Q charge, it can be casted twice more within 4 seconds, with the timer resetting after each cast. If you always wait a few seconds to reactivate your Q, you will be able to weave an E in between each Q cast.
Helpful Strategies/Tips
Helpful Strategies/Tips
When you start with your E you will be able to take the first 2-3 hits from Gromp/Krugs when leashing for your jungler without losing much health. DO NOT get caught in the red area if you don't have Valor up. You can potentially get stuck behind Krugs if you don't have Valor to help you dash through them. If you do end up stuck behind Krugs it will take you slightly longer to get to lane and you'll end up taking a large amount of damage. You want to be standing in the green zone when you're auto attacking so you are closer to lane.
Once the first enemy bot turret is down, you can take the following paths to get behind your enemy. From there, you'll be able to force a fight that favors you (assuming you and your carry are even in CS/items or stronger than the enemy bot lane). Ward up to make sure you don't run into the enemy jungler.

Me
I'd just like to point out that I buy tears during the last moments of the game when I am dead and won't be respawning before the game ends. It was a habit I developed a long time ago and I decided to stick with it just for the hell of it. I don't buy them in the middle of the game, contrary to popular belief.
