Skill based match up. Building Bramble and steelcaps into him will shut him down. Just survive until 6 and don't eat his Q poke and you'll come out on top.
Fiora
A hard match up from the get go. Let her push you in and do not try to all in alone unless you have Bramble and Steelcaps. Only fight if you get ult off and hug a wall to prevent her from fully getting her ult off.
Darius
Skill match up. Wait till 6 to fight and as long as you can dodge his Q's when he eventually gets his passive off you should win.
Garen
Less skill based and more based on if you can keep W charge up and press it when eh goes in before his silence hits you. If you can do it you win trades and all ins.
Quinn
A good Quinn will know to keep her distance and will rush Qss against you. Ask for jungle assistance and let her push in to get a lead you can use to shut her down. Phase rush into her is a good way to punish Quinn when you do catch up with E
Vayne
A good Vayne will punish you if you mess up so play it safe. If you manage to land an E Q on her and can proc passive with an auto attack you should be able to win fights if you go Phase rush since she can't kite away from you.
Kayle
Early Kayle isn't that hard to abuse. Unless she's very good. In the event she is you need to respect that she'll abuse you if you miss your E. Only all in her if you land it because she'll use Q to slow you and W to get away otherwise. Phase rush is an acceptable pick here over Conq.
Nasus
Nasus good or bad will always benefit if you shove him in, Freeze the lane in front of your tower and abuse him when he goes in for CS. Try not to Q the wave to hit him as it'll cause it to start shoving towards him. You need to respect his level 6 with sheen because if you don't he'll clap you in ult. If you need to go Phase rush to bait out his ult.
Camille
Not a particularly hard match up, So long as you don't let her abuse you and walk away you should win. Use W when she's about to hit you with her empowered auto and you'll win trades.
Tryndamere
Playing against Tryndamere is always a battle against RNG. The best option is to allow him to push you in so he can't run you down if he all ins. Delaying mythic for armour is recommended as fighting Tryndamere is a battle of endurance, not damage.
Irelia
So long as you don't fight her when she has passive stacked you'll win fights and trades. When she finishes bork you need to respect the power spike even if you're ahead or she'll get a shutdown.
Jax
Will depend on how good the Jax is, if he's good he'll poke you with Q and W and then activate E while walking away until you're low enough for him to all in. It's best to wait his E out and then E him back in and trade that way or try to combo him to proc passive before he can activate his E. If he rushes bork you need to respect when he gets it even if you're ahead.
Dr. Mundo
With Mundo's soon return to top lane Mordekaiser will be faced once more with one of his harder match ups. Hide behind minions so he can't get free poke with his Q and keep E for when he tries to run you down. Get jungle help to get ahead since you don't win 1v1's without a lead.
Gnar
So long as you don't over extend and take bad punishes from him wait till six and if you land E when his rage meter isn't high enough to get off during a single fight all in him with ult and you should win.
Illaoi
Really comes down to if you can dodge her E or if she buys Qss. If she buys Qss it'll come down to you baiting out her ult and walking away like other champs do.
Riven
Skill match up. Will depend if she can go in for quick trades against you and get away. If you land E and Q as she dashes away you'll usually win because of your W's heal.
At six she'll probably try to all in you. If you time your E right you can cancel her land Q and walk away most of the time with your passive MS boost.
Kennen
Let him push you in and get jungler to punish him for over extending. Bait him in before the jungler shows himself so can't doesn't run away.
Poppy
Tank match ups are Mordekaisers dream, even one as damage heavy as poppy. So long as you don't repeatedly let her slam you into walls you win trades and fights.
Ornn
So long as you don't let Ornn freely get his empowered auto attacks off you'll win trades. Just be careful when you R since he can nullify it with W. Always beware that you can use your ultimate to completely nullify his since it doesn't follow into DR.
Cho'Gath
So long as you avoid his knock ups you'll win by the time you're level 6. If you are low don't greed because he'll just run you down and chomp you.
Pantheon
With the mini-rework this one became a bit tougher. If he goes in with W use your E to put him behind you when he tries walking away with his E and smash him with Q. Remember to use your shield before you get low enough for his Q to deal the bonus damage or your shield will take more damage than needed.
Gangplank
A good GP is probably Mordekaiser's hardest match up because of his W. A good GP will punish you repeatedly and keep his W for your all in. Always last hit his barrels if he drops them during fights so he can't reset his passive. A way around your ult being countered is to take Phase rush and run him down and force him to use W for the heal and then ult to trap him.
Jayce
Usually a harder match up but with the current state of Jayce he's not particularly hard to lane against so long as you don't let him poke you freely.
Ryze
Chill and don't let him poke you for free. Just farm safely and throw out an E if he over extends. If you land it punish him with Q and activate W to absorb his retaliation. At six only ult him if you get your E>Q auto combo off.
Nautilus
Although not a common pick toplane Nautilus may be a tank but the damage he deals early hurts. Wait until level Six before going for fights
Taric
Don't dismiss Taric top. He'll pummel you into scrap metal in fights. Don't let him land his stun on you and E him away if he does and wait when you hit six Bait his out before going for the all in.
Urgot
Avoid his Q's and keep your W partly filled. Try to engage on him first otherwise you'll have to change the rest of your shield while being bashed by his passive. Use W to avoid the execute threshhold.
Yorick
SO long as you avoid E you can win fights pre Six. At six you'll need to ult him after he drops maiden. A good Yorick can kite Mordekaiser in ult using his wall so be careful not to find yourself out of place if he survives inside ult.
Yone
Skill match up and he's slippery because of his E. Note that if he's in E do not ult him as he can't recast it to cancel your ultimate.
Yasuo
A good Yasuo will make it hard to land Q's and try abusing you early but so long as you wait till 4 and land an E you should win fights.
Wukong
Don't ult a Wukong that's standing still. Other than that it shouldn't be too hard to trade with him.
Vladimir
Don't let him poke you you with his Q's freely. Use W to sustain in lane with him and farm and let him push you in, chill behind minions when he tries to use his AOE. Try baiting his W before going all in.
Tahm Kench
A cheese pick for sure but one Mordekaiser wins against so long as you don't eat poke early and when all in's happen you get your passive off before being eaten.
Sion
Not a hard one just don't let him land Q's for free. If you're in the Q use E to make him land a less painful one and trade back. Note that you can Dodge his Q with your R and sometimes after he exits his R for some reason when Mordekaier ults it does nothing and goes on CD so try to wait if you can.
Singed
A slippery champion to play against, don't push him in or he'll start being able to fling you into tower, keep the wave frozen in the middle or at your tower and punish him when he tries to farm. If he proxy's don't waste your time chasing him off unless he's between your first or second tower in which case you can force him away from the minions.
Shen
A skill match up funny enough, a good shen will try to keep his sword between him and you. So long as you don't allow it you'll win fights.
Sett
Bit of a tough one early because he can run you down with his Q and E. So long as you avoid his W in fights and don't ult him while he ults you, you'll win. If he builds Bork respect the power spike and get help to kill him.
Renekton
Play passive early and go for poke with Q when you can to charge your W. When he or you go for all in's WAIT for him to use his stun BEFORE popping your shield or he'll destroy it. So long as you do that and are even in lane you'll win fights.
Malphite
He'll try poking you a bit but it can be mostly ignored if he's going tank. If he's going AP be a bit more careful especially around level 6 since he'll try to all in you if you're low enough. Wait till 3 and when he goes in to farm E him and start slapping him a bit, use W to tank the damage he'll deal before running away.
Kled
So long as you don't fight him when his empowered auto's are up you'll win trades. Just be careful when he's close to remounting or he can quickly turn the tides if you go in on him.
Cassiopeia
You'll need to play it safe early, Wait till six. At six you'll need to make her use her ground before ulting so she can't slow kite you.
Teemo
Go Dorans shield and play it safe, don't let him poke you out of lane and farm when you can. When you hit six if you land an E all in him. Try to get your auto off before he can blind you to activate your passive. Be wary if he's running ignite.
Volibear
Voli isn't a champ you'll win trades with early and even at six it'll be tough to pull off. When he goes to combo you walk away and E backwards and it should put you outside his chase range. Usually best to ask for jungle help to get ahead.

"You are going to Brazil!" - Mordekaiser, probably.
Mordekaiser is an AP juggernaut stuck in a weird spot between bruiser and duellist thanks to his Ultimate. However the lord of death is still a decent pick toplane with quite a versatile item selection and a kit that is quick and easy to learn.
What is an AP juggernaut? AP juggernaut's are similar to their AD counter parts, often building some damage items mixed with tank items in their builds. Hard to kill and dishing out tons of damage to everything around them if you find yourself inside Mordekaiser's Realm of Death you'll most likely come away with a grey screen, browsing the items you can't buy while you wait to respawn.
Pros and cons
Pros: Good 1v1 potential because of Ultimate. Good snowball potential Mordekaiser excels when getting ganked as he can turn it into 2 1v1's. Ultimate is a valuable tool for securing objectives such as Dragon and Baron. Hard to dive. Steals stats with ultimate making fights you'd normally lose winnable Built in %magic pen and %ms bonus Ultimate always has value.
Cons: Mordekaiser is punished very harshly by Quicksilver Sash or champions that can undo suppressions. He's Immobile. Mythic itemization is limited and not that great. Obliterate is the only source of reliable ability damage. The rest coming from passive and auto attacks. Abilities are projected and easy to avoid. Lacks hard CC. Heavy/expensive items.
Some tips and tricks
Mordekaiser's bread and butter combo is Death's Grasp > Obliterate > autoattack to proc passive and run his enemies down with passive damage and deliver a beating with his mace.
Flash > Obliterate is a good way to finish off fleeing champions, just be sure they'll die to it or you'll have wasted Flash and made a fool of yourself.
When running Conqueror try to prioritize activating passive using an auto attack and not an ability or it's activation damage won't count towards your conq stacks forcing you to auto attack an extra time to activate it.
You can use Death's Grasp during Obliterate when it lands making it hard to see that they're about to be pulled in.
If someone is in range you can use Death's Grasp and quickly cast Realm of Death as it has a 75% slow making the E impossible to dodge unless they use a mobility spell to avoid it or have Phase Rush active.
You can use Death's Grasp to push enemies away from you if you need to escape quickly. Use it directly in front of you and it'll push enemies that walk into it back.
Avoid ulting targets that will likely die as you're just giving them the change to possibly escape and wasting your ultimate.
Obliterate is anchored to the spot you clicked on it's activation, beware of this before doing Flash > Obliterate or you might end up throwing it in the completely wrong direction.
About this build.
Inspired by the Master Mordekaiser player KaizerMorde, this build makes up for Mordekaiser's rather loose placement as a "Juggernaut" by making him into a true one that is a high threat in 1v1's and team fights, with the high ability haste offered by the build you'll be throwing out Obliterate every 2 seconds and Death's Grasp on a 5-6 second CD, this build truly compliments Mordekaiser's kit wanting to smash his mace over peoples heads over and over until you're marching down the enemy nexus.
Runes explained.
Conqueror is fairly obvious, it's a good rune on Mordekaiser adding in to his strength of a sustain fighting by giving him a little spell vamp and extra damage.
Triumph Is great on any champ. Especially Mordekaiser as he likes to take ganks in 2 separate 1v1's using Realm of Death.
Legend: Alacrity vs Legend: Tenacity Both are good and are situational, Alacrity is for when you need as much damage as possible in fights and some extra pushing power while Tenacity offers you resistance to CC heavy comp's later down the road.
Coup de Grace vs Last Stand Althought Coup de grace can be good usually during fights Mordekaiser will find himself low, especially after ganks, due to Indestructible Mordekaiser gets max use from last stand while still being relatively healthy.
Celerity is perfect for this build, it synergizes with not only your passive but also boosts cosmic drives movement speed making it easily the best rune to stick to the enemy while in death realm or in team fights.
Gathering Storm is used mostly because the other runes aren't that great, it helps that this build really turns on at two items and by that time you'll at least get some use of this and as it scales it'll make up for the tank items you'll eventually have to build to survive.
Itemization explained
Riftmaker: The mythic made for AP bruisers. It's not that great honestly but it's what Mordekaiser is stuck with for the time being. Due to it also being good on champions like Akali when it's decent the item has had it's power shifted towards the late game with half of it's omni vamp being locked inside the mythic passive.
Rylai's Crystal Scepter: Although the loss of Liandry's torment hurt Mordekaiser and Rylai's the item itself is still a fine buy with high stats that he loves and a 30% slow that'll keep the enemies in range at all times and makes landing Q easy.
Cosmic Drive: A great second item on Mordekaiser and essental for this build, providing extra movement speed and 40 ability haste with one item along with pretty good stats and Making keeping close to enemies easier during fights or for just moving around the rift in general.
Nashor's Tooth: Making up for Mordekaiser's low attack speed this is a great item on him when ahead, although this item makes you squishy with it's lack of defensive stats it's perfect for 1v1's in the death realm or for split pushing as Mordekaiser's ability to take towers without it is subpar.
Void Staff: Although Mordekaiser does lose some magic pen because his E's passive pen puts him past the soft cap it's still a great item against enemy teams or champions that stack lots of MR.
Gargoyle Stoneplate: A good pick up as a third or last item, offering a shield for 100% bonus HP every 90 seconds it's great on him, the stats are a bonus and much appreciated by a Mordekaiser against a mixed enemy team comp.
Spirit Visage: With it's ability to enhance shields and heals by 25% more than making up for it's low MR this item is a must have into any team comp that has a strong AP champion. A bonus is that it's enhanced by revitalized.
Banshee's Veil: A situational item against champions with hard CC that if it lands could probably end with you dead or forced to burn ult to survive.
Zhonya's Hourglass: A good item for mordekaiser offering decent stats and high survivability, just be careful about using it's activate as a badly timed one can cause you passive to run out, would recommend later in the game due to armguard not being a valuable first buy anymore after it's nerf.
Morellonomicon: You buy it the same reason mages do, can be replaced with Thornmail if you're against a team that auto attacks a lot and you're confidant you can land E when it matters.
Dead Man's Plate: Very situational, only buy if you REALLY need to move fast.
Rabadon's Deathcap: A great item, pure damage, a good buy when you're snowballing and want to keep crushing plebs with your mace to end the game quickly.
Randuin's Omen: A good buy into crit heavy teams, makes your 1v1 potential against champions like Yasuo great as the activate reduces their damage further along with ultimate.
Thornmail: A good buy into autoattack heavy teams, in match ups such as Aatrox and Fiora it's a good second buy after mythic due to you already buying bramble vest. Can be switched with Morellonomicon if need be.
Force of Nature: Good against AP champions that deal constant damage and in general a good item for Mordekaiser as the movement speed lets you stay ontop of people. I'd usually recommend this when Spirit visage isn't enough.
Demonic Embrace: Demonic embrace is a subpar item that synergizes with Mordekaiser. with a 1.2% HP burn and the bonus armour and MR you get from it being laughably low even in the early game. This item should only ever be built against teams with at least 2 high HP targets or if you're going a tank build. Otherwise you'll get more out of other items.
