Introduction

Welcome to my comprehensive Master Yi guide!

Master Yi is an incredibly fun, face rolling champion. His kit includes several fairly unique elements including; un-targetability, gap closers, healing, damage reduction, true damage, move speed, attack speed, and slow resistance.

Once you master how all these abilities work in different situations you'll find yourself a nearly unstoppable face rolling machine. Until you CC'd...

Pros / Cons

Pros:
  • Can easily clean up team fights
  • Can 1v1 most champs
  • Split pushes well

Cons:
  • Easily bursted
  • Beaten by crowd control
  • Not much early game pressure
  • Relient on farm (3 item power spike)

Runes

Runes on Master Yi are pretty straight forward. You want to survive the jungle in the early game so you pick up some armor. You want attack damage and attack speed to synergize with your kit and then we'll pick up magic resist to help against being bursted by mages.

Masteries

Masteries there's a little bit of flexibility. The main thing is that you end up with Fervor of Battle . You deal most of your damage through auto attacks and generally rely on lifesteal to stay in fights, thus Fury , Vampirism , Battering Blows , and Merciless .

Items

As a melee fighter, Master Yi can make use of a very wide variety of items in different situations. Because of his Double Strike and Wuju Style he synergizes well with on-hit builds. His Alpha Strike works well with attack damage and Highlander synergizes with attack speed and movement speed.

However, because you are melee auto attack champion, you also want to work in some form of survivability in your build so that you don't get nuked.

CRITICAL STRIKE YI
Critical strike Master Yi is not very viable in the current meta. It has some potential against a squishy team without much crowd control. This build doesn't provide the best nuking potential of these builds however, so if you need to nuke a carry and there isn't much CC this should do the trick.

ON-HIT YI
On-Hit Master Yi is my favourite build. It has roughly the same amount of DPS as the critical strike build but does it with only 5 less expensive damage items so that you can build a defensive item.
With Frozen Mallet and Blade of the Ruined King there isn't much chance of escape from the clutches of Master Yi and your split pushing potential is very high.

BRUISER YI
Bruiser Master Yi shares many characteristics with On-Hit Master Yi except that he forgoes one or two of his damage items in exchange for better tank stats. This is still a decent split-pushing build. However, it sacrifices raw damage and 1v1 capability for a stronger team fight capability against teams with more crowd control.

I always rush my Blade of the Ruined King and then finish my boots, usually Mercury's Treads. From there I'll start piecing together parts of my Guinsoo's Rageblade and my first tank item (usually Spirit Visage for the healing).

From there I get appropriate tank items.

Skill Sequence

RANK 1
You'll always want to max you Q Alpha Strike first. this is the best scaling ability that you have access to. Your E Wuju Style passive doesn't actually get stronger with levels, its a constant 10% bonus AD so it isn't very useful until you have the attack speed to make user of the active.

RANK 2
You'll almost always rank up you E Wuju Style second. It gives you bonus damage passively and an active to help cut through the jungle camps with armor.

In some situations ranking Meditate second is a good choice when you started at blue buff. After that you can use Meditate every time it comes off CD to ensure that you're healthy for an early gank if you have a lane with CC and kill pressure. You'll clear slower, but you'll be healthier after a full clear.

RANK 3
If you didn't get Meditate at rank 2, you'll put a second point into your Q Alpha Strike unless you're about to die.

If you did get Meditate at rank 2, you'll put a point into your E Wuju Style

RANK 4
Now you'll either put your first point into W Meditate or a second point into Q Alpha Strike depending on what you've done so far.

RANK 6
Get Highlander. It's your ultimate. Now you run fast.

Early Jungling

Depending on which team you start on, follow the appropriate clear.
STARTING BLUE:
    1) Start at Red Buff. Save Smite. Level up your E
Wuju Style.
2) Auto attack three little chickens then Q alpha stirke the large one, then activate your E Wuju Style.
3) Clear your Wolves. Level up Q Alpha Stirke.
4) Clear your Blue Buff.
5) Clear your Gromp
6) Make a decision. Gank top, mid or secure Scuttle Crab. Back
7) Clear Krugs.
8) Gank, get scuttle or ward enemy jungle while you wait for chickens to respawn.

STARTING RED:
    1) Start at Blue Buff. Save Smite. Level up you E
Wuju Style.
2) Clear your Gromp.
3) Clear your Wolves. Level up your Q Alpha Strike.
4) Clear your Chickens. Auto attack the little chickens 3 times then Q alpha stirke the large one and activate your E Wuju Style. If you have smite use it.
5) Clear your Red Buff.
6) Clear your Krugs
7) Make a decision. If you have the health, you can gank top or mid. If not you can contest scuttle. Otherwise just back and wait for Gromp to respawn.

You have to remember that you are a farm jungler. You don't have CC so ganks pre-6 aren't going to be very strong and you need roughly 3 items to power spike. So try and maintain 60 cs/10 minutes.

Summary

Master Yi is a fairly strong jungler overall. I honestly don't think that the crit yi is viable in the meta now. It has slightly more burst than an on-hit build but has the same DPS with a significantly higher price tag for your items. The DPS build also has the ability to have tanky components added into it. Things like Frozen Mallet or Sterak's Gage which can still benefit your damage while keeping you safe.
