Trieuloo's Challenger In-depth Veigar Bot Guide

By Trieuloo
About Me
Hello, My name is Trieuloo and I have been playing league since S2.I have started taking league of legends more seriously since S9 and have peaked at 851 lp challenger, and am challenger of writing this guide. This has been primarily done through picking off meta picks as well! Veigar is one of the most fun champions I have played in league of legends and one that I have played a lot in the bot lane. I got introduced to Veigar through playing against duoking and realized how strong this champion actually was in the bot lane. To this date I am one of the few players in challenger who play Veigar. With strong 3v3, 2v2, and teamfighting there is very little weakness to be had in Veigar's kit. This is going to be my first mobafire guide so feel free to give me any critcism, or feedback. If you would like a guide in video format feel free to check out my youtube video @ : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBDkBRhiN0wIf you have anymore indepth questions on matchups or anything related you can ask me questions in the comments, or on my stream @ https://www.twitch.tv/trieuloo

Champion Skills

PASSIVE
ABILITY
PHENOMENAL EVIL POWER (Passive) Passive which enables Veigar to end up one shotting people, and why he is such a threatening champion. Every spell that hits an enemy champion counts as one AP and every kill / assist grants 5 AP.
Q
BALEFUL STRIKE (Q): Veigar's bread and butter which you use to trade, and the only ability in his kit that can get stacks from minions. If you hit a cannon / big jg camp it will grant you two passive stacks, otherwise it will only grant one.
W
DARK MATTER (Q): Veigar's highest damage spell which has a shorter cooldown the more stacks he has with his passive. We typically want to be comboing this spell with cage.
E
EVENT HORIZON (Q): Veigar's cage and CC which makes him into a real champion. Hitting a champion with his cage grants 1 stack.
R
PRIMORDIAL BURST (Q): Veigar's execute which can deal with both squishies and tankier champions. It can often kill people at ranges they dont expect if you combo it alongside with Electrocute

Veigar's R increases his burst and can kill anybody so we want to be maxing that ability first. Second we want to be maxing his ability that makes us be able to trade and stack our passive better which is his Q, . Third we want to be getting his E, which lowers the cooldown as it is your main ability that gets picks and lets you land combos. Lastly we want to be maxing W, because it only increases its damage which is not very useful.
Summoner Spells

SUMMONER SPELLS
-
FLASH: One of the bread and butter summoner spells that you have to take on almost all champions. Veigar has a lot of combos using his Flash that we will be talking about later on.
TELEPORT: Teleport is important due to not being always able to dictate your back timings. Veigar is very susceptible to being poked out in lane and this can cause you to have really bad backs. This helps not lose too many waves and allows you to scale much better.
Runes

DOMINATION
We always want to be taking electrocute due to the synergy with his kit. An important thing to note with electrocute is that Veigar's E, counts as one stack. You are also able to proc electrocute level one by AA AA. Otherwise using his main combo procs electrocute easily. This page is BY FAR better than comet as the choices are better, as well as burst potential. If you take comet you are a naughty Veigar.
The only viable choice in this section would be taste of blood as it helps you with sustain in lane, as well as cheap shot not being reliable at all. Veigar really needs the early help in lane that taste of blood provides. Look to trade with taste of blood and electrocute up.
You can either run Eyeball Collection OR Ghost Poro on Veigar considering the elo you are in. The higher the elo you go you want to be taking Ghost Poro more often as you do not get many freebies.
Lastly we want to be taking Relentless Hunter over Ravenous Hunter due to the nerfs Ravenous Hunter has received. Many people ask why we take Relentless Hunter over something like Ultimate Hunter and the reason being is that you will never get two ultis off playing Veigar in one fight. The extra movement speed however lets you set up cages and be in better positions which control mages typically struggle with.

INSPIRATION
We are taking inspiration tree second due to its flexibility in combination with there being no other good tree. We do not need sorcery due to not needing mana due to Lost Chapter in combination with the Veigar buffs, and the same reasoning behind why we dont need to take precision.
Future's Market is great allowing you to hit important item spikes such as Lost Chapter as well as Sorcerer's Shoes
Cosmic Insight being good due to decreasing the important Flash and Teleport timers AS WELL AS Everfrost and Zhonya's Hourglass cooldown.

We want to be taking the cooldown reduction rune over double adaptive due to the extra adaptive not helping us much in lane. By decreasing your cooldown it helps you get off more trades / stacks, and helps you scale better. Another possible thing you could do is one cooldown reduction and double armor runes.
Items
Doran's ring > Starting Item
Playing Veigar we want to be staring Doran's Ring as it gives all the values we need. HP AP and sustain. By buying this item with two Health Potion's you have a great start for Veigar and will most likely be able to sustain until Lost Chapter, or Sorcerer's Shoes.

Dark Seal > Snowball & Sustain
Dark Seal is an item that has an insane stat efficiency for only 350 gold and one that I buy every game. This is due to its increase of healing with Refillable Potion and the snowball potential it has giving 5 ap per stack. With one kill on dark seal you have kill potential on almost every champion in the game.

Everfrost > CC & Sustain
Everfrost is the only mythic you should be going on Veigar as it has great components, as well as solving many issues that you typically encounter. This being the mana issues from Lost Chapter and the root for spells such as Dark Matter. Going for other items such as Luden's Tempest for the magic penetration is just not worth it as the setup potential is just too great from everfrost.

-OR-
Sorcerer's shoes > MAGIC PENETRATION
This is the option I prefer to go due to the burst/ one shot potential that Veigar has in his kit. This allows you to spike harder in the mid game and snowball off picks. However if they are building magic resist this item becomes less of a factor. Great to buy after Lost Chapter for kill potential, or even as a first item.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity > CDR
This item giving you 20 ability haste and summoner spell reduction is useful when enemy team is stacking alot of magic resist. Why u may ask? This is because of the fact that you are going to be getting Void Staff faster and the magic penetration does nothing! However, I personally find very little situations where I am actually building lucidities unless we have double ap top side

Rabadon's Deathcap > CC & Burst 3rd/4th item
Rabadon's Deathcap is one of the best items on veigar due to his passive giving him AP. Using this item's passive will grant us ~ 150 ap and upon completion of this item ~500-600 ap. Typically we want to be building this item after boots most games unless you want some safety like Zhonya's Hourglass or have stacks on Dark Seal to buy Mejai's Soulstealer

Zhonya's hourglass > Defensive 3rd/4th item
Zhonya's Hourglass is an item that is a jack of all trades due to giving ability haste and safety with it's active. The active is why I find it crucial to have over Banshee's Veil even if they have more ap than ad.

Banshee's veil > Defensive FLEX ITEM
Banshee's Veil is a great option to look for on Veigar if enemy team has nothing to pop the spell shield. For example if you play against a comp with Ziggs or Xerath you would never be building this item. There are more useful MR options.

Cosmic Drive > CDR/MS FLEX ITEM
Cosmic Drive is an item that I personally think is overrated for the price, and efficiency it brings. With our current build rushing Everfrost into Sorcerer's Shoes and Zhonya's Hourglass we are going to have 28% ability haste which tapers off as you get more CDR. I find it more useful to be building defensive, but if there is 0 risk go for it!

Dead Man's Plate > Defensive FLEX
Dead Man's Plate is one of the items on Veigar that is SUPER good and underrated when they have fed AD picks. The reason behind this is because of the movement speed it provides can give you ~ 500 MS out of combat. This allows for many picks with a lot of safety in combination with still one shotting people. Typically used if they have assassin mid/jg.

Void Staff > Magic Penetration
As simple as it sounds Void Staff is just used when they are stacking MR. Not used in many other situations/any at all. If you plan to go void staff early because of team comp plan to get Ionian Boots of Lucidity.

Abyssal Mask > MR CLOSE RANGE FLEX
One of the MR items that I personally think is better than Banshee's Veil. The reason Abyssal Mask is good is due to the stats it gives. Giving good HP and MR it decreases the kill threats of AP assassins with an increase of 10% AP dmg causing you to one shot anyone still.

Force Of Nature > MR/MS FLEX
Personally I have never tried Force of Nature however in theory this item would be good against champions with lots of range such as Ziggs or Xerath. However it is very uncommon to come across these picks so I think if u need a defensive MR option it is better to run Abyssal Mask
Early Game
Playing Veigar bottom requires you to have really good laning fundamentals due to having no sustain. This means that you have to be very conscious about taking free autos. However, this does not mean you can never trade with your opponent. Many people often do not realize Veigar's typical trading pattern and play into his cards. This being trading early with Electrocute by either AA Baleful Strike AA, OR a Dark Matter Baleful Strike combo. You typically do not want to be using Event Horizon unless you know there is a setup/gank because you will run oom before you can buy Lost Chapter. By using these trade patterns to their full effects you can leave them ~50% hp and Teleport back into lane and have kill pressure if they do not back. Teleporting back with either Sorcerer's Shoes, or Lost Chapter is fine, but I prefer Lost Chapter due to having more Event Horizon opportunities and more wave clear potential. Using Sorcerer's Shoes requires you to have a strong setup support like Leona or Nautilus. You will be able to 100-0 a champion with Sorcerer's Shoes, but only 80-0 with Lost Chapter with full combo.

You do not want to be using Baleful Strike on repeat for CS, rather only if there is an opportunity to get 2 minions in a row. The best opportunity is when you can get a hit on the enemy and one csing the creep. This is because Veigar's Baleful Strike is his main trading tool and you can get abused during the cooldown timer.

You also typically will not be having shove early on Veigar unless you have a beneficial matchup with a ranged support like Senna or Karma. In these cases it actually is not up to you to manage the wave, rather the supports.

You can also just scale on Veigar and Baleful Strike minions on repeat, but that is first of all boring, and second of all not optimizing the champion to its fullest in lane phase. But, you will be able to 1v1 all adcs post 15 mins so it is not a bad strategy to get up to ~mid to high diamond.
Mid / Late Game
Typically as Veigar you just want to be sidelaning with Teleport, or if needed go mid to match their bot laner. With Everfrost you are strong enough to also be grouping with your team to be fighting for objectives. Make sure to ALWAYS play around your Event Horizon as that is your peel/engage tool. It actually does not matter if the Event Horizon hits the enemy, but rather that it zones the enemies from dealing damage to your team. Always make sure you prioritize your Primordial Burst on bruisers such as Viego, or Wukong as they can typically win a fight single handedly. For more information look at the mechanics section on combos.
High Elo Notes
Veigar is a great champion that could play either strong or weak side in higher elos / competitive. This is due to Veigar's Event Horizon gating a lot of dives possible which creates situations where you get trades rather than just dying. However, playing weakside as Veigar against poke champions such as Karma is not very possible. This is due to the low sustain that Veigar has as a champion and you will go down roughly 30 cs @ 10 mins and many situations you are easily diveable. But, putting Veigar strongside against Karma actually would flip the matchup and if you burn her Flash. This can easily cause a re-gank where there is close to 0 counterplay if they are shoving in. Causing Veigar to have prio in a lane that normally he does not. This is normally the reason that strongside Veigar is strong because the setup potential is absurdly high through Event Horizon. His weakness is he generally is bad vs poke compositions, but highly excels against champions that run into him like Olaf or Diana. These champions even if they have counterplay like Olaf's Ragnarok are bad, because Event Horizon splits the team and you can easily burst down Olaf. Playing Veigar is also a two-way flex mid bot which opens many drafting opportunities for example with Lucian or Tristana mid.
