Introduction

The guide is strictly for Udyr on the Dominion game type. While any game depends largely on your team, I have had great success using this build, even when we lose. This is my first guide, so be gentle. Or at least lube up first.

Pros / Cons

Udyr takes some time to learn. Do not get discouraged if you lose your first few matches. Eventually you will get the hang of it and come to enjoy the tigerbearturtlephoenix man.

Pros

+ Strong starting stats.
+ Does much more damage than most players realize.
+ Great run down speed mid / late game.
+ Does a mixture of damage.
+ Very rewarding to play.

Cons

- Even with Bear Stance, hard to catch some enemies before buying boots.
- Easily kited by players like Ashe.
- No range abilities means you have to play smart.
- Stance switching takes time to learn and may be too much for some players.

Items

The first thing I buy is a Phage. I know a lot of people like to start with boots and potions, but I find this item allows me to get the first kill at bottom position 9x out of 10. If you go to top in the scrum, it's more of a **** shoot than anything. The extra HP and chance at slow are great for Udyr at the start though since his movement speed is so slow. NOTE: In a drawn out fight at the start, you will run out of mana!

Next I build into Sheen, via Sapphire Crystal 1st. This will alleviate your mana problems from here on out. After you get the Sheen, buy Zeal, or, if you have enough gold, go right for Trinity Force. Once you have TriForce you will notice a big leap in your damage output.

Now that you have your first offensive item built, it's time for boots. I've tried a few different pairs, but to me the Boots of Swiftness are best for Udyr. You are going to be surprised how often people try to run from you when their life starts dropping so rapidly. These boots + Bear Stance boost + Ghost if needed, will allow you to run down just about anyone.

After you have the boots, begin to build Malady (using Dagger 1st), then Wit's End ( Recurve Bow 1st). Both of these items have great synergy with Udyr's stance switching, and the Passives will overlap and run concurrently. By the time you have these two items, most matches will be winding down; however; if the game is still raging, build into Kitae's Bloodrazor or Ionic Spark next. Both are great choices: Bloodrazor gives a bit more pop per hit, while the lightning affect of Ionic spark can really ravage groups of enemies. With these items you will have a great mix of AD / AP output and a ton of attack speed. Udyr is an autoattack champion after all.

I used to build Sunfire Aegis after TriForce, but since Dominion, generally, is over fairly quickly, I like going a more offensive build. If you find that you are dying too quickly, I would still build TriForce first, followed by Sunfire Cape, and then Randuin's Omen. These two defensive items have great aura synergy and work well since Udyr has to be so close to attack. Finally, if the enemy team is stacked with AD powerhouses, grab a Thornmail and Frozen Heart. To be honest, if you have to go this route though, your teams has probably already lost the match.

Masteries

I'm using a 16/14/0 Mastery build for Udyr. You can see my choices at the top. Since Udyr relies on both types of damage, but has to be so close to deliver it, I felt this was the best allocation of points.

Runes

See Runes at top of page. My only note would be that you could change your Glyphs to whatever you prefer. I like having the extra mana to start out though. It can really mean the difference between getting that last stun off or not.

Summoner Spells

I ALWAYS take Ghost and Garrison for Dominion. Ghost is self explanatory, it allows for some early kills, or escapes; Garrison is, in my opinion, the best spell for Dominion. This will let you dive an enemy who is babysitting a tower and kill them, or conversely, allow you to hold off two or three enemy champions that would normally run right through you.

Garrison will also snap an enemies off the tower if they are in the process of taking it. Couple the spell with the mastery which causes the tower to do splash damage, and you have a great offensive / defensive weapon.

If for some reason you do not like using Ghost or Garrison, I have had some luck using Exhaust in Dominion. This will usually let you get the first kill with ease, but you may miss having Ghost towards the end of the game.

Flow of Combat

To me, this is the most important part of playing Udyr: learning how to stance switch. There are two types of encounters in Dominion, the kind you see in advance, and the kind where you say, "Oh ****!" as three enemy champs pop out of a bush.

When you see the fight coming, your stances should flow like this; pop Wilding Claw when you are 2-3 seconds from engaging, pop Blazing Stampede the second before engaging. As soon as that first hit connects, the enemy will be stunned and have a nasty DoT applied. Switch to Wingborne Storm immediately after the first hit. Fight in Phoenix Stance for a few seconds until Tiger Stance has refreshed. When it's ready, switch back to Tiger Stance.

You can repeat the pattern from here. Tiger > Bear > Phoenix. You hop into Phoenix Stance after the first stun because, not only do you get a nice AOE AP aura, but it buffs your ability damage as well as your attack damage. This synergies with your next stance, Tiger Stance. While in Tiger Stance you apply a DoT (which is magic damage) on first hit, and your attack speed is greatly increased.

Turtle Stance, in my opinion, has little benefit in Dominion. If leveled up highly enough it does provide a nice damage shield and HP leech, but you wont be building Udyr with tanky items to take advantage of this stance. Plus, you do not spend much time farming minions in Dominion, which also takes away from Turtle Stance's usefulness.

If you find yourself in the second kind of fight, don't panic. You should already be in Bear Stance from running around. Your first hit will deliver the stun, you may want to switch to Tiger Stance next to apply your DoT, then into Phoenix Stance in order to dish out as much AOE damage you you can. If one enemy is close to death, stay in Tiger Stance and finish him off.

In closing, however you decided to level up your skills, just make sure to max out Tiger and Phoenix Stance first. You only need one point in Bear Stance as the stun duration never increases, and the movement speed boost is very slight. Save off putting any points in Turtle Stance until you have to.

Team Work

I prefer to take bottom with Udyr to start in Dominion. This will help offset the fact that you do not have boots at the start, as well as give you a much higher chance for your first kill. There are very few champions who will take you out 1-1 if you play smart.

If you find yourself running our of mana before you have gotten your first kill, simply return to base upon acquiring 400G and buy the Sapphire Crystal: which later builds into Sheen, which later builds into TriForce.

After taking control of bottom, you can either kill some minions for gold, or press to the enemies' bottom tower. Chances are the champion you just killed will be back before you take their tower, so use caution. If bottom seems secure, Udyr makes a great ganker using Bear Stance movement speed boost and stun.

After the initial fight, it is very hard to dictate how the match will play out. Use your best judgement and put Udyr where he belongs: in the action.

Udyr vs The World

This is how Udyr stacks up against other champions in Dominion. I will update this section as I play more, and different champions each week. This section is by no means written in stone, it is simply a gauge to use. I will list all champions here, but only rate the ones I have played against more than a few times.
